Title: Live show
Post by: Pak-Man on August 17, 2017, 05:56:05 PM
Waiting for the show to start. They're not showing the preshow. Just silence. Haven't seen a show this packed in a long time.

Psst. I know I would never get there...but if someone has been there, can he or she put down the link for the digital goodies for this show?

Had the pre-show stuff in the theater we were at. Not a Doctor Who fan at all-only ones I've sat all the way through before were the 2 previous Doctor Rifftrax movies. But needed a laugh and glad I went as it was very funny-liked it more than the summer shorts show. First one with technical difficulties though. Guys apparently couldn't see the short for about the first minute so few riffs and a few where the timing was way off until their monitor problem was fixed.

Also noticed Kevin laughing more and longer doing this one than on previous live shows.

Wow. I'm not a Dr Who fan but this was the best live show of the year and one of their best shows period. I'm really glad I went.

The short was great even with the tech difficulties. Was it picture or sound? Bill kept saying we need the movie in our monitors. I thought they weren't hearing it. But it didn't ruin it at all. A great short and if I could find it I would use the kid's legs on fire as my new avatar here.

So many memorable riffs. The cyber guy missing his cue. The hose stealing. A decent crowd at my show and people recalling riffs at they lingered in the theater hallways. The movie was about twenty minutes too long but that's the way it goes.

Loved it!

I noticed this too. I expect a lot of callback riffs in future trax.

Even with the technical difficulties the short was great.

Some really great riffs during The 5 Doctors.

So weird seeing classic Dr Who on the big screen.

I wasn't a Whovian before this show and after seeing this event, I definitely am not one now! I dozed off during the movie, it was really hard to keep my attention, too bad they won't be releasing a VOD, but let's hope they can release an MP3 of it! After all, Mothra will get an MP3, so this one should too!

EDIT: There were so many great riffs in this one, but my favorite would have to be the Sanford & Son reference: "I'm comin', Elizabeth!"

Good show. Lots of laughs. I know absolutely nothing about Doctor Who, and after watching this I don't think I know any more, but the jokes all landed nicely none-the-less.

I *am* a Whovian and I loved it.  Five Doctors is legendarily dumb and dull, and they gave every goofy thing the quality riffing it deserved.

And as a Who fan, one thing I clearly noticed was that they were careful to make fun of every stupid thing on-screen, but they didn't belittle the franchise as a whole.  They only mocked *this specific story.*  I really appreciated that, as past Rifftrax on major franchises have had a tendency to make you feel like a moron for liking the franchise in question.

I had a great time at the show. One of the best by Rifftrax. I really want this to get a release, even if it's just a MP3.

I think  I laughed the hardest at the confused Cyberman. The timing on that joke is so perfect! There's just enough time for them to say the joke and people to laugh at the implication that is happening, and THEN he goes back, making it even funnier.

Am I the only one that was waiting for Tegan to eventually rip into the First Doctor? He really was an asshole through the whole thing, especially to her. I don't know anything about her character on the show, but with her punk hairdo and 80s style, she seemed like a character that wouldn't put up with that kind of shit.

Tegan typically mouths off at the Doctor at every opportunity.  Her passiveness in this story is just one of the many reasons it's kinda rubbish.

The movie was about twenty minutes too long but that's the way it goes.

That was actually the extended version of The Five Doctors, and like many extended versions, it mainly just shows you why those parts were cut in the first place.

My experience with Doctor Who is pretty limited, but are the companions normally this useless? I know with multiple Doctors it allows them to do the things the show normally need multiple people for, but this was particularly embarrassing. Literally the only thing they do, the one guy suckerpunches The Master, and two of them tie him up while unconscious.

Companions are definitely more active, in general.  To be clear: The Five Doctors is not good, not even for Doctor Who, nor thought of particularly well outside of the novelty or nostalgia.

Been so long since I've seen this that I had forgotten how all the companions were pretty much reduced to bystanders.

Of course they didn't have much to do because all the doctors were not given much to do, that is of course what made it great for riffing, a whole lot of time spent doing very little.

I don't remember ever seeing The Two Doctors, but The Three Doctors was a much better multi doctor story.

They have officially said they aren't able to release it as a VOD? That's too bad. I'll definitely check out the rerun next Thursday then.

Well, if they are going to release it on MP3 commentary, any idea where I can get a copy of the episode in question?

It's on DVD.  Easy peasy.  iTunes too, I think.  FWIW, they riffed the Special Edition version.  The DVD has both editions on it.

My God, a kind of director's cut, eh? Well, I can imagine they cut a lot of the bowl cut fur-wearing Dr. Who wandering through corridors. Oh, but when that three stooges riff finally came it made it so worth it. What a classic live show!

So...how the hell was pi supposed to be significant to the SQUARE CHECKERBOARD?

Just mumble it to yourself as you skip across and you'll be fine.

I think it was supposed to be the rows or something, the master seemed to jump to certain rows, but then the doctor just walked across normally without setting anything off.

Yeah, I really didn't understand the "solution" to that "puzzle".  I think the writers figured if they threw in a math reference, people would just assume that the Doctor was a genius who knew a lot more than the rest of us, or something.

I know they said they couldn't release the VOD, but I really hope they at least release the MP3 like they've done with other proprietary live shows!

I suspect Thrashalla is sick of going on about an mp3 of it.

I couldn't get to the truly live show.. it was the same day as the first day of Gencon.  I did see the encore the next week though.  It was so-so.  The short about electricity was fantastic; I hope they release downloadable version of that soon.

I fell asleep during the main feature.  I always fall asleep during the live shows.  I'm perfectly capable of staying up until 10 PM at home, but I guess the darkness makes me sleepy.  I only managed to stay awake through the previous live show by chugging a coffee just before the show.

I have the same thing going on, Pastor. I haven't stayed awake during a movie in so long that I really don't go to theaters anymore. In my case I'm just so tightly wound that when I slip into the escapism I relax and pass out.

Has anyone heard anything re: a "just the jokes" MP3 for this?  I realize the rights issues mean the live version can't be released, but now I'm hearing rumors that they can't repeat it again or do a "just the jokes" version.  I can't see how the BBC could do this, if it's true.  I mean, Disney allowed the guys to do them for "Star Wars" and the MCU, and they're very strict on rights.  Any official word on this?

I don't know about the official word, but I have heard that the BBC is rather tight with their ownership of Doctor Who as a currently running TV series even as a reboot. The Dalek characters appear in this movie-length TV special (20th anniversary) so licensing is a problem because those characters aren't completely owned by the BBC, even though they are part of the Doctor Who story. If RiffTrax released this for home use or VoD, the licensing would open a can of worms.

Unless it was spelled out in the contract they made for doing the live show there is nothing the BBC can do about a just the jokes mp3.   If anything they would want more people to go out and buy their crazy expensive DVDs.

It would probably be a waste of time for them to make the mp3, it's not on any streaming platform, for some reason even Britbox can't get that episode.  On home video there have been several different cuts available over the years, and I think the cut they used for the live show is different than the current DVD, so they would have to edit their script.  When there are different versions out there they have to deal with people complaining when they try to sync to the wrong version.  All adds up to a lot of work for something that will not sell well.
