I don't think this does me more good - I'd rather take a magazine-style subscription and just get each new episode to download as they come out, but I can see how it would be great for people who haven't bought everything.

They are accepting beta testers now, by the way. Unfortunately, ROKU isn't a thing here. Unless it comes out on Apple TV, it's not a thing I could use even if I wanted to.

What's a Roku? Can I get it on my Xbox? Holy cow, when did I get old? This it's an old person question, isn't it?

Yes it is.

I don't know the answer because I am also an old person.

ROKU is a streaming box/stick.

You can download "channels" to it and stream stuff. (Netflix, Hulu etc)

I love my Roku(s).  In addition to the 'premium' stuff (Netflix, Hulu, Shudder, and so on), it also has some good free channels (including Pluto TV and the Shout Factory channel).  Best of all, it's just a hardware purchase -- get a Roku box for between $50-$120, depending on what generation you opt for (I have a couple of the $50 Roku 1s, and am happy with them), and you don't pay anything monthly to Roku itself for the service.  I also found it pretty easy to set up.

Going through the comments on the reddit page, I see torgospizza is answering a lot of questions on Rifftrax Prime.  It looks like it will be available through Roku (among other services), and it looks like streaming titles you already own and have in your library will be streamable through it, but it's not clear on if there's an option for just doing that without also paying the subscription.

Have Roku boxes hooked up to all 3 of my TVs. The one in the kitchen is the newest and cheapest- Roku Light I think it was called-about 2 months old and cost $25. It's a bit slower to navigate than the more expensive boxes and I think the output is limited to 720p, but for a small kitchen TV anything more is overkill. Highly recommend Roku boxes and my weekend mornings almost all start with making breakfast while watching Pluto TV.

Back to the topic of Rifftrax Prime though...accessing releases I already own via my Roku interests me a bit, but would have to have details on the "member exclusive content" before I'd commit. If it's all of the past and maybe a new Bacon Cam then I'm in.

Oh, this is neat.  Still prefer to own my Rifftrax, though.  Would really like a Fire TV app that just accesses your own account for streaming stuff you've bought.

Hmm.  This is very interesting.  I don't have the funds for another recurring expense right now but will keep it in mind.  I love the posession of the files I already purchased.  To me it seems like it would change my viewing habits to occasional binge watches of shorts and then any other purchases would be my desert island favorites collection for when I can't afford to subscribe to any subscriptions.  My collection is rather small but there are a lot of shorts and some movies I missed so it's tempting.  Yes, I think Rifftrax might get some people like me to commit to regular monthly purchases.

I would definitely be interested in beta testing but am curious about the details. I own all the shorts and almost all the VOD and MP3 releases (there are some sparkly vampire and Britney Spears/Mariah Carey titles I just really do not hate myself enough to sit through) and enjoy very much being able to watch the content offline. What would be the advantage of having Prime to those of us who pretty much buy everything already or is it really just to attract new people to the product by offering a streaming only service? Do not get me wrong, it is a great idea to get new eyes on the product. If you could share any details...I'd like that.

I highly recommend the Britney Spears riff. Don't even remember the name of it, but it was a great riff of an exepectedly formulatic movie.

Has there been any update on this? Did beta testers get to try it out yet?

At least one person has earned the Prime Beta achievement now.  Really hope I can join the beta...  I'd hate for a RiffTrax achievement I haven't unlocked to sit there in my account taunting me forever!

From Conor Lastokas’s recent Reddit AMA (it was Torgo’s Pizza who gave this answer):

We had a beta-ready version of our Roku app, and most of the subscription stuff is ready on our end; in fact, we were going to launch it in January as subscription-only, and start there.

But as we started to go through the app internally, we realized it just wasn't up to our standards. This was the same sort of feedback we heard from the community, including here on reddit.

So after spending a bunch of time working on a subscription-only Roku channel, we decided at the last minute to try and build the bigger, better version instead. We really want to make sure that our long-time users get something that works for them, too, and that means integrating Library content as well as some other stuff that basically requires us to do more engineering work.

While it does mean we needed a couple more months to do it, that work is already underway. Right now we're hoping to have everything ready to go in March.

The service itself we're calling "Friends of RiffTrax" and the subscription side will be $5.99 for unlimited streaming of a ton of our content that is 2 years old and older. I think we might also have a higher tier that includes all new content (call it "Best Friends") as well.

Anyways, work continues on it, and if the Roku app goes well, I think we'll be looking at doing more platforms like Apple TV and Amazon Fire TV next. I'll try to be better about keeping everyone posted! (I would have except there really hasn't been any news, so...)

Thanks for posting this.

So it sounds like it’s on the way.  Good enough for now.

Looks like I might have to purchase a Roku.

oh boy. Hope the rifftrax roku app sees the light of day this year. I wish I was already a friend of rifftrax with a subscription for all you can watch rifftrax. please please please take my money for that. I feel like I remember there being some subscription thing through VRV on roku, though I never had one and I know there's no more rifftrax on VRV.

Right now I'm working my way through about 20 rifftrax videos I've never seen available on Amazon prime for now, maybe rent some too. And there's whatever I'm getting through the kickstarter. but after I watch all that, I hope the rifftrax roku app is up and running.

While we're waiting, you can also check out the Shout Factory TV app on Roku - there's some Rifftrax videos on there as well, along with some MST3K episodes (free, but with commercials).  Not sure how much overlap there is with Amazon.

Also, the Pluto TV app on Roku has a 24-hour free Rifftrax channel (and another 24-hour free MST3K channel).  Not sure what their current rotation is, or how it overlaps with what's available to stream elsewhere.

I'm familiar with those as well. Got excited when Pluto debuted but was quickly annoyed with the ads. Shout Factory app ain't bad at all though. Watched my share of MST3k on there. There's some overlap of Rifftrax on there and Amazon prime (which is commercial free). Recently watched the duo of Chuck Norris riffs - Breaker Breaker on Shout Fact. and Silent Rage on Amazon prime. 2 others that look to be on Shout but not Prime are Zindy the Swamp Boy and Hillbillys in a Haunted House.

The latest Kickstarter email mentioned that they're working on "a Roku channel" so that got me excited again
