Title: A Season 12 Wishlist
Post by: Johnny Unusual on May 03, 2017, 08:27:50 PM
OK, I thought I saw this as a thread, but apparently I didn't.  But it gave me a good idea for one.  If we get a season 12 (and I suspect we will), what do you want to see.  I mean in all forms: are there specific movies you want to see, different cast/writers, general decisions, etc.

I actually have a list of movies I'd like to see done, but for now I'll say I would also love to see the Brothers Chaps, creators of Homestar Runner, involved with the show.  They are fans and I think there style of humor fits in quite well.  In addition, both of them have a lot of experience writing for and directing kids TV shows, so I think they could definitely do some fun stuff behind the camera as well.

I want to see a reriff of Robot Monster. The season 1 episode is almost unwatchable it's so slow and devoid of riffs.

I want to see a reriff of Robot Monster. The season 1 episode is almost unwatchable it's so slow and devoid of riffs.

What would really be nice would be if they did a season ( or just a few random shows ) in 3D and riffed old 1950s 3D movies like Robot Monster. Or perhaps some of the garbage that came out in the 80s, like  Treasure of the Four Crowns ( 1983 ) [ Shout! Factory has the home video rights rights to this one ], Parasite ( 1982 ), Spacehunter: Adventures in the Forbidden Zone ( 1983 ), and dare we hope.. Jaws 3-D ( 1983 ). Of course, if they could get Universal to license them Jaws 3D, then they may as well also get Jaws: The Revenge ( 1987 ).

One genre that has been ignored on MST3K is martial arts. The few martial arts based experiments were movies like Master Ninja that just barely had any martial arts content. I started a thread on this subject a while back
http://forum.rifftrax.com/index.php?topic=27051
The only problem with having any old school martial arts films on MST3K would be finding an HD widescreen print. Most of the riffable ones seem to only exist in old VHS pan-and-scan transfers from the early 80s. But there are a couple where HD Widescreen copies are available.

Roots of Evil ( 1979 ) was written, produced and directed by German pop star Christian Anders, who also cast himself as the martial art hero. And who did he cast as the villain? None other than Deep Roy. It was recently remastered and released on DVD in Germany.

A widescreen transfer of Fist of Fear, Touch of Death ( 1980 ) exists, although from a worn theatrical print, but well worth riffing.

And I don't know how many times this movie has bee brought up before, but Gymkata ( 1985 ).

And now I am going to throw my all time favorite movie under the bus by suggesting Times Square ( 1980 ). As much as love the film, I do have to admit it has a lot worth riffing. But at least if it was shown on MST3K then it would have a chance of breaking out of obscurity the way Manos: Hands of Fate did.

And if they ever go back to riffing Gamera films, then the one they should not miss is Gamera: Super Monster ( 1980 ), one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Basically a clip movie using Gamera footage from all the previous films, grafted onto an awful sci-fi film about female alien superheroes who run a pet shop, and the worlds most annoying Japanese kid.

I could go for a re-riff of Robot Monster, even though it's one of my favorite season 1 episodes, as you may have guessed from my icon.  (Admittedly, not a great riff, but between the Billion Bubble Machine, the sheer goofiness of the monster suit, and the singing of "peekin' through the knothole, on grandma's wooden leg", it's got some of my favorite S1 moments.)

Gymkata, definitely.  Watched that one with the Gymkommentary komm--er, commentary a while back, definitely ripe for riffing.

There's a movie called Frankenstein Meets the Space Monster that I just watched off YouTube that's begging for the treatment.  In the vein of Plan 9 from Outer Space, in terms of both subject matter and quality, but with less convincing aliens.

There's a 2001 movie called Reptilian which is really a remake of Yongary, with terrible CGI effects and hilariously bad acting.

They could do something Rifftrax did recently with the first Ator movie and riff a sequel to a movie riffed by the original show.  Maybe not any of the other Gamera showa-era movies, but Wikipedia informs me that there are more Master Ninja movies re-edited from the TV show...

Or, hey, there's the pilot of 90-minute pilot for Manimal to consider.  Or the seventies Amazing Spider-Man pilot.

Another monster movie possibility is the seventies Kong rip-off A*P*E.

Also, the 1989 Linda Blair/Dan Haggerty movie, The Chilling.  In which cryogenics somehow leads to frozen zombies, and Grizzly Adams kills some of them with a forklift.

I'd like to see them be a little looser with their requirement of high quality widescreen prints. It's going to be really hard to get really old low budget movies that way. Which are the majority of the type of movie they should be riffing.

I'd love to see more MASTER NINJA movies featured on MST3K. "THE MASTER" was a thirteen episode series. Doug McClure (THE LAND THAT TIME FORGOT, AT THE EARTH'S CORE) even appeared in episode 11, playing Max Keller's dad.

I don't mind the invention exchange, but it does take away from what little time we have to get to know the new characters.

-Jonah back and not another new host.
-Bring back the hexfield view screen.
-Pipe dream, so not gonna happen, but longer less rushed production cycle. As much as I enjoyed Season 11, I think a consistent writing team writing as they go would have allowed for improvement episode to episode.
-Pipe dream number 2- one episode with Joel and original cast and 1 episode with Mike and the sci-fi era cast.
-Better distinction between riffer's voices.
-Evil-er mad personalities, more frustration from Joel and the bots.
-Shorts.

Master Ninja III. They were supposed to do it for Samson vs. The Vampire Women but they chose that one instead to send TV's Frank off with Torgo the White into the other great Satellite in the sky…

I second shorts. Not that there isn't an abundance of riffed shorts to be found around here SOMEWHERE, but there's something about that little appetizer before the movie that makes them both more delicious.

Also, I could do without Shorts. I actually think Rifftrax does them better than MST3K did (plus, they're more suited to the internet and portable devices), but that's just me.

It seems like Rifftrax has done so many shorts that it would be difficult for them to find ones that haven't been riffed.

I think there are shorts out there they could riff.  Of course, the show is currently at its shortest length and many of the movies are already being edited, but I would love to have them find a way.  Oh, maybe an entire episode that's just shorts.

Rifftrax already does that. They had the MST3K reunion last year and the Summer Shorts thing this year. I'd rather that be delegated to Rifftrax than have MST3K impede on their territory.

Also, to add to my wishlist, I'd like Cambot to actually do something. In the classic series, it actually did things other than just act as the camera. It also played music, zoomed up in letters, moved around and did lots of cool stuff. In season 11, it seems like it's just a camera and its only activity grandfathered over from the old show is the zooming in for the letters.

I'd like to see them be a little looser with their requirement of high quality widescreen prints. It's going to be really hard to get really old low budget movies that way. Which are the majority of the type of movie they should be riffing.

I could see their reasoning for HQ Widescreen. If they are going to release these episodes on home video, then they are going to want good prints so they can release the same films uncut as a bonus. So when they release episode #1 on Blu-Ray, they can also release the uncut Reptilicus. That way someone looking to purchase the movie Reptilicus will end up purchasing the episode. The same thing Rhino was doing with some of the MST3K releases, only they did so with the same poor quality prints used for the series. People don't buy poor quality prints on home video anymore. If someone is going to buy a crap movie like Manos: The Hands of Fate then they are going to want it sourced from a restored print of the original camera negative shown in it's original aspect ratio. The company that uses one of the cheap prints from the past will lose sales to the company that went to the trouble of releasing the quality print. The thing I liked about the Rifftrax DVDs was that you could switch to the original track, and it would be a quality DVD release of the film. They probably sold a lot of DVDs to people just looking to buy a good copy of Carnival of Souls or The House on Haunted Hill

BTW, the quality of the film prints on the original MST3K was horrendous. Not just the use of worn theatrical prints, but the bad video transfers. I am convinced most of the PD films came from the local Woolworth, and what you saw on MST3K was mastered from a LP budget video.

-Jonah back and not another new host.

That really depends on if Jonah only agreed to a single year. It is sort of like with Doctor Who, and how the actors playing the Doctor could stay on the show as long as a decade, or only agree to stay on for a single season. Not many people these days wish to commit to a series indefinitely as the did in the past. People with even the minutest sliver of fame get a lot of lucrative offers, which they don't want to pass up because they are bound to a streaming video show. The only way they could keep Jonah on the show would be to offer him a lot of $$$ in a long term pay or pay contract, which I don't know if MST3K could afford. Otherwise, he is only there until he gets a better offer to do something else, and MST3K will need to find a different host.

-Shorts.
I second shorts. Not that there isn't an abundance of riffed shorts to be found around here SOMEWHERE, but there's something about that little appetizer before the movie that makes them both more delicious.

Lets not forget that the only reason why shorts existed on MST3K in the first place was because they had a lot of movies that ran far shorter than their two hour time slot, and unless they were going to have extra long host segments, needed something for filler. I don't know if there is any incentive for the streaming video episodes to fit a specific running time, therefore no incentive for shorts.

Also, the shorts used for MST3K were old and worn and not widescreen. They would need to find HD widescreen shorts for the new MST3K episodes, and I don't really think many of those exist.

Felicia Day to actually act more threatening as Kinga Forrester. I don't feel like she has that lovable jerk role as good as Trace and Mary Jo did Clayton and Pearl. I think Patton Oswalt as TV's Son of TV's Frank is perfect, though.

In my opinion, everyone in the current cast was chosen because they had some sort of cult following and could bring a new batch of nerds to MST3K. For example, Felicia Day has a huge following from the Joss Whedon nerds. She already had an established screen persona which she probably does not want to stray too far from.

I only know about The Buttercream Gang because of The Cinema Snob. A movie with a title like that, I'd rather see riffed by a group that would be  more willing to go blue. Cinester Theater, Ice On Mars, something like that. Plus it's a religious movie. MST3K and Rifftrax tends to avoid those, likely to prevent offending anyone.

I feel really restricted trying to come up with a list. I want something that's enjoyable in its own right, nothing post-1980s, and not too much violence and nudity. Would it work better if Season 12 just riffed films Shout! Factory already owns?

Season 11 has fourteen episodes. So let's just list fourteen. No particular order.

MASTER NINJA III
TEENAGE ZOMBIES (with Short)
YETI: GIANT OF THE 20TH CENTURY
DOCTOR STRANGE (1978)
CAPTAIN AMERICA II: DEATH TOO SOON
JESSE JAMES MEETS FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER
VOYAGE TO THE PREHISTORIC PLANET (with Short)
THE LEGEND OF BIGFOOT (with Short)
THE LONE RANGER AND THE LOST CITY OF GOLD
ELIMINATORS
ATTACK OF THE CRAB MONSTERS (with 1 or 2 Shorts)
UP FROM THE DEPTHS
CREATURE FROM THE HAUNTED SEA
SAMSON IN THE WAX MUSEUM

I'd list more MASTER NINJA films, and even some films from the KTMA era that I'd like re-riffed, but then I'd have no room for the others.

THE LEGEND OF BIGFOOT is actually a documentary. I just thought MST3K could try something different. If it's a flop episode, then just stick with regular movies.

Oh, I had a list somewhere around here for eps I'd like to see.

Yor - Hunter from the Future
Body Slam (a Hal Needham wrestling picture)
The Brain from Planet Arous
Toomorrow (a terrible Monkees sci-fi rip-off)
Sssssss ("Don't say it, hiss it!")
Empire of the Ants
The Sleeping Car (a weird little horror movie I saw years ago.  It's ostensibly about a haunted train car turned into a home, but the ghost only seems to possess his sofa bed)
Teen Witch
Babes in Toyland (the TV movie with Keanu Reeves.  For Christmas.  Though I suppose I only want to see a new Christmas episode if they get a new host)
9 Deaths of the Ninja (will need some censoring)

I don't know if any T.V. movies would make it on the new MST3K as the ones made before 2000 were all shot in 1:33:1 and not widescreen.

One of my friends had his own wish list of films for the next season of MST3K

The Day The Clown Cried ( 1972 )
Star Crash II ( 1981 ) aka Escape From Galaxy 3
Fantastic Four ( 1994 ) a.k.a. Roger Corman's Fantastic Four
Skyscraper ( 1996 )  Die Hard with Anna Nicole Smith
Mac & Me ( 1988 ) E.T. ripoff starring Ronald McDonald
Turkish Star Wars ( 1982 ) a.k.a. The Man Who Saved The World
Major Movie Star ( 2008 ) a.k.a. Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous
Spider-man ( 1978 ) Legitimate Spider-man film produced by Toho

I think the sad truth is that most Turkish rip-off movies haven't been dubbed.  Still an episode working with subtitles (on the top) could make for a great one-off gimmick episode.

I'm curious as to certain rare films that could find some kind of official release through MST3K. RiffTrax was able to release a riffing of THE STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL and THE LAST SHARK... somehow.

I would have listed ROBOTECH: THE MOVIE (1986), but there would likely be too many rights issues to deal with, and I'm not sure how the writers feel about anime.

Guys, I just watched Ninja Terminator, which was being reviewed on How Did This Get Made?  So I think they should do one and only one of Godfrey Ho's ninja movies.  The man has "directed" 115 movies.  And by directed, I mean, he mixes a bunch of crazy shit he films and then splices it with obscure kung fu movies.  Interestingly, most of his movies contain the word Ninja.  Here are some titles:

- Ninja, the Violent Sorcerer
- Ninja Project Daredevils
- Tough Ninja the Shadow Warrior
- Golden Ninja Invasion
- Ninja Powerforce
- Zombie Vs. Ninja (note this was well before the popular "Vs" phase of direct to video movies in the aughts)
- Thunder Ninja Kids in the Golden Adventure
How about the Golan-Globus fairytale adaptations?
Also, Golan-Globus... almost anything.

I still long for a riff of Lee Majors in that Boggy Creek guy's Norseman.

There's a weird made in the Phillipines version of the Dr Moreu story called the The Twilight People. (Pam Grier is the Panther Woman. Pam Grier!) This would be great for Rifftrax too.

It's too much to ask for but the musical version of Lost Horizon from the 70's with Liv Ullman, Olivia Hussey, etc.

Some people have mentioned Kinga. I think the problem is she's not acting crazy enough to appear evil enough to torment fellow beings. She needs more crazy. I think the Felicia Day is up to this but it's just not being done.

One thing that I noticed in the live show (and had kind of noticed comparing Season 11 to previous seasons as well, but it really stood out for me live) was that it was alot easier to get a feel for the different riffers when the silouettes were bigger, so if Season 12 happens I hope they emgiggen the sillouettes a bit.

A list of twelve (which is the minimum I'd like to see for a season) with some reasons in no particular order:

1. The Pied Piper of Hamelin 1957 (I'd love to see them riff a full length musical)
2. Road to Revenge 1993 (This would actually work better as a Rifftrax but whoever gets their first is fine)
3. Disco Godfather 1979 (name says it all)
4. Without Warning 1980
5. Quest for the Mighty Sword 1990 ( A kind-of Ator sequel)
6. For Your Height Only 1981 (I can see the crew being HUGE fans of the hero)
7. Death Machines 1976 (this again would be a better Rifftrax one but I'd like to see a lousy martial arts flick on MST3K)
8. Girl Gang 1954  (this crew REALLY needs to riff a juvie delinquent movie)
9. Lightning Bolt 1966 (We need a cheap eurospy movie from this crew)
10. Escape From Galaxy 3 1981
11. Monster From a Prehistoric Planet 1967 or possibly Goliathon 1977 (because we need at least one Japanese Rubber monster movie. Goliathon has a pretty sexy lady who stays minimally clothed to boot)
12. Monster of the Piedra Blancas 1959 (because we need more classic black and white talky scifi)
Bonus:
13: Colossus and the Amazon Queen 1960 (because I left out a sword and sandals film from the season)

12. Project Moonbase 1953 (because we need more classic black and white talky scifi)
Bonus:
13: Colossus and the Amazon Queen 1960 (because I left out a sword and sandals film from the season)

That's actually a decent list. I think Disco Godfather was riffed by Wyatt Cenak and Donwill at Shouting At The Screen, which is a monthly live riffing show at the NYC Alamo Drafthouse where they riff Blaxploitation films from the 70's. I haven't seen it, though.

12. Project Moonbase 1953 (because we need more classic black and white talky scifi)

Well they already did this one on MST3k

You are completely right. Must have forgotten it since it was season one and rarely watch those.  Updated. Replace with Monster of the Piedra Blancas 1959 (same reason starring the Sing Whenever I Sing guy from Giant Gila Monster)

12. Project Moonbase 1953 (because we need more classic black and white talky scifi)

Well they already did this one on MST3k
