Title: 20 Questions Practice Post
Post by: Pak-Man on September 19, 2006, 11:12:06 AM
OK. We nearly got our heads handed to us in the last 20 questions game, so I figured we should keep an ongoing game of 20 questions going so we're extra sharp when the next movie is up for guessing.

All the rules from the standard 20 questions posts apply. (You can't ask twice in a row, vague questions mean you can't ask anymore for 5 more questions, All yes/no questions, first question posted after an answer is given gets the next official question.)

The Winner gets to think of the next movie, or they can Pass.

If they pass, the first person to post: "I'm thinking of a movie" (Or something to that effect) gets to host the next game.

If a question goes unanswered for 72 hours, the game is abandoned and the first person to post "I'm thinking of a movie" after the 72 hour mark from the last question posted gets to host the next game.

Let's keep the answers to DVD releases you might expect to see on Rifftrax. Try to avoid obscure indie flicks nobody's seen and porn. :^)

OK. I'm thinking of a movie.

Is it Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey (1991)?

And before anyone gets all heinous and jumps down my throat, it has aliens and also the game 20 questions in it.

Quote
Dead Bill: Hey Ted? Wanna play 20 questions?
Dead Ted: Okay! I got one!
Dead Bill: Is it a mineral?
Dead Ted: Yeah!
Dead Bill: Are you a tank?
Dead Ted: Whoa! Yeah!

So it's a 1990s movie ...

...based on a novel...

A movie that uses animatronics ...

With sci-fi elements, but not primarily thought of as sci-fi ...

Not a part of a series ... Not a Spielberg.

This was a wide release movie, so don't worry that I'm trying to sneak one by you here...

Excellent sarcasm_made_Easy ...

Yup, Congo (1995) featured a fully functional animatronic Joe Don Baker!  Actually they used animatronics to create Amy, the friendly sign-language-using monkey.

Smilin Jack was close when he started poking around novelist Michael Crichton's more popular creations, the Jurassic Park series.

Check out Mike's thoughts on Congo (http://www.michaeljnelson.com/home/other.aspx).

And sarcasm_made_Easy, you are up next, unless you wish to pass.

So the following actors are not featured:

That knocks out a bunch of pre-1950 sorta-comedy movies, anyway... Bringing up Baby, His Girl Friday, You Can't Take it With You, Holiday...

Yeah, but I'm very far from an expert on non-Disney animated feature-length dramas made before 1960!

Oh, well, let's try this: Was it released by Warner Bros.?

That's it.  I was blathing, which means to bluff.

"Liar!  Liar!" - Carol Kane, star of Taxi in Princess Bride, to SNL member Billy Crystal

Another contender (sorta) was Andy Kaufman's Heartbeeps from 1981.  Starred Randy Quaid (SNL member) in a comedic movie that sometimes parodied personas (borscht belt comedian, etc.) with robots.  That movie has the distinction of being sarcastically mentioned by Mike Nelson as "his favorite movie" in Megacheese.

I have a suggestion for the 20 Questions game. Whenever an answer is given, all of the previous questions and answers could be listed too. That way someone who jumps into the game late can quickly see where the game is going. No need to scroll up and down or check previous pages.

For example:

1. Did it come out within the last 10 years? YES
2. Is it a horror movie? NO
3. Did it come out within this millenium? YES
4. Did it come out before 2004? YES
5. Anywho, is it a comedy? YES
6. Does it star an alumni of Saturday Night Live? NO
7. Is it animated? NO
8. Is it based on one of these: a book (comic or otherwise), TV show, or video game? NO
9. I know I may be wasting a guess, but I am gonna go out on a limb.  Is it "Snatch?" NO
10. Does it star Ben Stiller? NO
11. Is it part of a series (e.g. a sequal, prequal, or original?) NO
12. Does it have an ensemble cast? NO
13. Does it feature any actor who has also been directed by Todd Phillips (Old School, Starsky & Hutch)? YES

It's easy to copy and paste. And no need to worry about making any of it in bold-face.

When I've played similar games at other forums, they usually copy and paste the progress in new posts like this.

Just a suggestion.  :)

Once you knew it starred an actor from a Todd Philips movie, you should have followed that lead...

Damn, I wanted to guess:

Bulletproof Monk?

Came out in the 2000's, before 2004
Has comedic elements, though not a comedy
No SNL alum
Does feature Sean William Scott, who was directed by Todd Phillips in Old School
Not a sequel, no following

And... it kinda sucked!

lol got it in one

let me try to clear stuff up, its a mix of fantasy and scifi, there are guns but they don't fire bullets and the characters you wouldn't consider as typical 'aliens' (for example Luke Skywalker and Han Solo look human but are alien to us)

This has probably confused people even more lol

Normally I wouldn't add the disclaimer but people are awful sensitive on these boards.  I hope you understand that that comment was made with as much sarcasm as I could possibly muster.  So please don't delete your account because I offended you, then we will never know what the movie is you are thinking of.

And if your comment was sarcastic as well then we are hopelessly lost in a confusing fog of lies from which there is no escape.  I don't even know if I mean what I'm saying right now.

20. Is it Rikidozan: A Hero Extraordinary?
Title: Re: 20 Questions Practice Post
Post by: Cibernético II on October 25, 2006, 11:26:14 AM
YES!!

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435931/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0435931/)

Rikidozan is a biopic about the man who is known as the father of puroresu (Japanese pro wrestling). Rikidozan's story is quite intriguing. A former sumo wrestler, he was introduced into pro wrestling by Japanese-American wreslter Harold Sakata (Oddjob from Goldfinger;he's played in the movie by the legendary Keiji Mutoh). He became a hero in post WWII Japan by standing up to American villains in the ring. Rikidozan became a star in the United States after being "put-over" by the legendary Lou Thesz for NWA World Heavyweight Championship. As he became rich and famous he bought up night clubs, hotels, and boxing promotions. Business-wise, he got between 2 rival yakuza families which to his stabbing death in a night club bathroom. The majority of the people did not learn until his death that he actually born Kim Shin-rak in North Korea. He came to Japan in his youth, adopted a Japanese name and trained to become a sumo wrestler. Ironically, the man that quit sumo due to discrimination for being ethnically Korean became Japan's greatest hero.

The movie is very well filmed and well acted (although a little bit embellished). They really present him as a victim character and they may have messed with the facts a little to show this. In the movie, the promoters want Japanese born judo champion "Imura" (who should actually be Masahiko Kimura) to be the flag bearer of the promotion, but one promoter sticks by Rikidozan because the crowd likes him more. In real, life Rikidozan himself invited Kimura to be his first long running fued but then scrapped the idea after a few shows because he was afraid the crowd would take to Kimura better. Also, the movie doesn't show him involved with the yakuza at all and the stabbing is shown more as a hate crime.

but other than that I definately reccomend anyone to see it. I bought it online for like 8 dollars. If you're a wrestling fan at all or fan of Japanese culture or biopics in general, pick it up. and there's a little love story in there too if you like that

Dammit, im going for it

19. is it a Gamera movie?

19. MUAHAHAHAHAHAHA! NO!

It's misleading for two reasons:
1) It's not Japanese
2) There's only one scene with a giant monster

and additionally...

Hint #3) In IMDB, if you type in the English title it brings you to the right page, but it's not listed under its English title.

Don't beat yourselves up.  I may have chosen something too obscure.  But when you learn what it is, I hope you seek it out.

Yes - the director is.  But not for making movies.

1. Made before 1970 (but released later)
2. Not Horror (or not exactly)
3. No established actors
4. Not shown on MST3K (but was mentioned)
5. Famous director (but not for making movies)

6. Does it have fantasy elements?

Um...not really, no.

(Okay, okay, fine.  This one is really obscure, so I'll give you a hint: the soundtrack was released long before the movie).

(Also, for the record, it isn't horror at all...hell, it's virtually impossible to classify this movie).

He had a band with a name, but his name was in the band name.  So he was essentially a solo artist.

Is Joe don Baker in it?
Title: Re: 20 Questions Practice Post
Post by: BBQ Platypus on November 10, 2006, 03:06:08 PM
Okay, we need to put our heads together here.  Remember, it's less than 20 years old, but wasn't made in the '90's or '00's, which means that it must have been made between 1986 and 1989.  It's a British film and the director is famous (note that the director might not necessarily be British).  It isn't a comedy and didn't take place in the past, which rules out Terry Gilliam's The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, along with anything directed by Terry Gilliam (he didn't direct anything else in that narrow time frame, much less a non-comedy).  I sincerely doubt that Joe Don Baker is in it.  Look at how many narrowing factors there are!  Really, the specificness of how much we know about the movie is making it hard!  Think about this one...really, really hard.

Damn you and your English movies based on English books made by English people. You know we don't watch your movies unless they star James Bond.

I can't think of any famous English directors from that period of time, but then again, I am American.

8. No. It is entirely Michael Caine-free.

I'll also point out for any non-Americans that Bobby Kennedy was President John F. Kennedy's brother, who was US Attorney General in his brother's administration (American nepotism hard at work!) and was assassinated while running for president himself. JFK was assassinated in 1963.

Now I'm picturing Peter Sellers playing soccer, er, I mean football. And he's playing every position, each as a different character.

Peter Sellers to Kermit on The Muppet Show: "There used to me a real me, but I had it surgically removed."

I think that's the biggest draw of Star Trek - it's one of very few futures where things get batter rather than worse. It's a comforting concept.

Apparantly, there wasn't because that link ceases to exist 2 years later, so I'm rebumping the old 20 questions practice thread to try to respawn our old never-ending game of 20 questions. I'll give other people a chance to start one, and if they don't I will. Rules are the same as they were in the start of the thread. First person who says "I'm thinking of a movie" gets to run the first one.
