Title: Your Favorite Movies of 2015
Post by: Relaxing Dragon on December 10, 2015, 07:33:18 PM
Folks have been bringing it up in the movie thread, and it is the season, so I figured I'd make up a more official place for it.

Another year, another massive avalanche of new release films. A bunch of which were worth watching. Some were even great! I generally build a list of nominations up in my head over the course of the year based on what I see, but I also go right down to the wire before I actually make a Best Of list. Gets trickier each year, with so many high-profile movies getting hyper-limited releases just before Christmas and then actually go wide in the new year (and I'm rather anal about what makes my list; one such qualification being that I have to actually see it in the 2015 calendar year). Still, I'll do my best to get to as many as I can before the ball drops, especially a few that I'm sure I'm going to love to bits (lookin' your way, The Hateful Eight).

How about the rest of you? What's rocked your cinematic world this year? I'll say up front: I've been seeing a lot of Mad Max: Fury Road love so far... and I approve. Everyone keep doing that.

I don't really have an order but this is probably close:

Mad Max: Fury Road
Inside Out
The Martian
Creed
Mission Impossible: Rouge Nation
The Babadook
Avengers: Age of Ultron
It Follows
Selma
Ex Machina
Ant-Man
Montage of Heck

HM: Crimson Peak, The Gift, Amy, The Final Girls, Straight Outta Compton, The Wolfpack, The Witch and Love & Mercy

(I haven't seen Hunger Games 4, Bone Tomahawk, Bond, The Good Dinosaur or Force Awakens yet)

2. The Martian
3. Creed
4. Inside Out
5. Mad Max Fury Road
6. Brooklyn
7. Spotlight
8. Steve Jobs
9. Sicario
10. The Gift

Honorable mentions: Amy, The Voices, Crimson Peak, Grandma, Straight Outta Compton, MI: Rogue Nation, Trainwreck, Kingsman, Ex Machina

Worst movie of the year: Knock Knock

Two of those were 2014 - Babadook was Jan 2014, so it's nearly two years old already! Selma was 2014 too, (It was mostly snubbed by the Oscars last year, remember?)

Gonna watch a few more in the next couple of weeks before I post a list.

I haven't sat down to compile a list of ten yet, but INSIDE OUT is definitely number 1.

I really liked Inside out a lot too. I'm really looking forward to seeing what great ideas they come up with should they decide to do a sequel.

Favorite movie for me is Rurouni Kenshin: Kyoto Inferno, was a summer 2014 movie in Japan, but hit blu-ray and saw it with my friends in 2015.

That whole trilogy is great, live-action movie adaptation of my favorite anime/manga series, and I think movie fans new to Kenshin could enjoy it too. Just great great with a wandering swordsman.

For released officially in 2015, I'll have to give it to The Force Awakens since I've seen it three times.

No relation to Green Inferno I hope.

Here is my list.  I've separated them into two lists again (wide release and limited release).  I've also added a new list of the top 10 movies I haven't seen.  This is based on my interest level of them, and how much I think I will like them.

Wide Release
1   The Force Awakens
2   Mad Max: Fury Road
3   Ex Machina
4   The Martian
5   Creed
6   Inside Out
7   The Big Short
8   Brooklyn
9   Steve Jobs
10   The Hateful Eight

Limited Release
1   Room
2   What We Do in the Shadows
3   99 Homes
4   Dope
5   Sleeping with Other People
6   Kumiko the Treasure Hunter
7   Slow West
8   Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
9   Experimenter
10   Tig

Top 10 movies I haven't seen
1   Anomalisa
2   I Smile Back
3   Tangerine
4   Best of Enemies
5   A LEGO Brickumentary
6   The Assassin
7   The Hunting Ground
8   Two Days, One Night
9   Cartel Land
10   Listen to Me Marlon

I may get grief for having Star Wars at number 1, but I mostly put it there since it is the only movie in this list that I will still be talking about 10 years from now.

Letterboxd just sent me a 'my year in review' email.
258 films watched, 446 hours of film watched.
Most watched director: Martin Scorsese (no surprise)
Most watched actor: Bess Flowers? Did NOT see that coming.

I also got this email, but it's not really reliable since I only logged movies I saw in theaters for most of the year (I started logging everything I watched toward the end of the year).  This year I'm logging every movie I watch for the first time, ignoring any re-watches, so the data will be more useful to me when I get my recap next year.

As it stands, my most watched actor of 2015 is Domhnall Gleeson, which is no surprise since he was in everything in 2015.  Most watched director is Robert Zemeckis, because I saw the Back to the Future marathon in theaters and I also saw The Walk.  94 films logged, 179 hours.

The easy solution, if you want it, is to log everything, so that you get accurate stats/records, and start a list which is only your first time watches.

Yeah, I might do that.  I just started using it last year, so I'm still kind of figuring it out.

I just went pro today. I have logged every film I've seen since I signed up in 2013, and I just love stats! :P

I looked back at 2014's stats, and it lists my most watched actor as Stan Lee and I vomited a little bit.

More stats - (You get year in review stats for every year you've logged more than ten films, and the stats include a lot more than the email did)

Let's you import activity from IMDB (which I don't really use)

"Advanced options including list cloning, sort before save and activity filtering."

I can post some screen shots of the stats stuff if you like.

Aside from that, I got it to encourage me to use it more. Post reviews, and read reviews. A thing I always mean to do but don't.

I started late in 2015 so my stats were minimal...

24 Films Logged

45 Hours Watched

Sharmila Tagore was my Most Watched Actor - so it makes sense that Satyajit Ray was my Most Watched Director.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this looks with a full season under my belt.

Edit - and I had no idea who Bess Flowers was until you posted that link. Some film freak I am. :)

Never heard of Letterbox'd, but it sounds like something that would be right up my alley. Right now I'm logging all my movies manually in a Word document (and only theatrical movies at that).

What's this now?

Letterboxd is really fantastic, and it's very satifying to look back at your year.

Everyone sign up and let us know your username. Maybe I'll start a thread. (Maybe I already did ages ago?)

This is me: http://letterboxd.com/tedprior/

Does it have a different name? I couldn't find anything when I searched the Play store.

If I upgrade to Pro later, does that update all stats for stuff I'm entering now?

Actually, yeah, a separate thread would probably be a good idea.

I'm trying it this year, though i didn't know it had a name. And I'm only counting movies I haven't seen before. Right now, I'm easily on pace to end with over 365, but it's a long year. I do have the advantage of a job where I can watch Netflix for most of my shift (hotel front desk night shift), so that should help.

It's not just 366.  It's 366 that you haven't seen before.  Rewatches don't count.

This sounds like the real challenge here is to make movies less fun.

Yeah, I agree. And I'm someone who's watched a *lot* of stuff just for the sake of watching something at that particular moment.

He made it easier in 2015. In 2014 he tried one a day. I think he made it a month before he missed a day.

You know who else watched a movie every day? Hitler.

I'm enjoying it right now, though it's more of a goal than a challenge for me.  Right now it's giving me an excuse to catch up on all of the smaller 2015 movies that I've wanted to see.  I would never try to hold to a strict requirement of one movie a day though, I don't think I've ever even managed that when I've done the October horror movie a day challenge.

I haven't seen nearly enough to say what my toppermost movie is (and it sometimes can take a year or two or more before we get a chance to see foreign films here in the States) But at the moment Ex Machina and Inside Out are my front runners.
