Title: Rifftrax Live - The Room
Post by: Pak-Man on May 06, 2015, 10:55:16 AM
Is everyone psyched for tonight!?

(I'm not. We couldn't get a sitter and Tyrant and I both wanted to see it, so we're taking turns. She gets first grabs this time...)

Going with my wife and some friends. Hoping for a good crowd tonight so we can get the other 3 shows in Canada.

I'm heading out right now for King Of Prussia.

Can't not mention that town, it's such an odd name...

First time attending for me. Seen unriffed many times. Was wondering if there is the spoon throwing at these rifftrax showings. I wanna show up kinda knowing what to expect and to see if I need to bring spoons lol.

Thanks

Loved it. Seriously, that was maybe the best one of I've seen and I've been to. . . I lost count, but a lot of them. I went to that Christmas Shortstravaganza. And then whenever they did Manos, I've been to that and every one since then. And I've never heard the audience get so in to it either. Terrific.

This was the most I've laughed at a Rifftrax Live.

It's been so long since I've listened to the riff for The Room so I wasn't sure what riffs were newly written except for the recent events ones.

Most of them were new. Almost all of them, actually. It's funny, because for about the first minute or two, they were pretty much the same as the .mp3 version, so I was all set to start being disappointed, and then they totally did a 180 on me.

I liked that they riffed the sex scenes instead of having some BS going on to avoid showing them.  The one on the spiral staircase was hilarious how they just kept going on and on about how wildly impractical and awkward sex on stairs, not to mention SPIRAL STAIRS, would be.

Great, great night and riffing!

No, the show was rated R, so no censoring, the guys even got to throw in a few swears...

Last night was my first time seeing "The Room."  Holyfuckingshit!!!!! It was just as incomprehensible as everyone here had said it was.  The show itself was hilarious.   :highfive:   The guys did a great job.  I covered my eyes during the infamous ass scenes (don't need that burned in my brain!!!   :gouge: ).  I  nearly had an asthma attack from laughing.  "Hip dick" was just awesome.  What's the deal with Wiseau?  Has anyone been able to find out where the hell in Europe he's from? I've never head a vaguer accent in my life!  Is that how he really speaks?

Also, did anyone else notice how Lisa's neck bulged out when she spoke?  It was like she was having a muscle spasm!   :o

I'd seen the mp3 riff of The Room once, but last night was the first time my wife was ever subjected to it. She didn't seem to enthusiastic at first, but less than ten minutes in she was laughing louder than anyone else in our theater. Tempted to catch the encore next week too if we have it in the budget.

I've seen this movie at least twenty times in the theater, and I laughed harder at this than I have in a long time.  Part of this is that there are ALWAYS inept little details about this movie you've never noticed before ("I brought these drinks in from outside!"), part of it is that there are parts of the movie that were previously inaudible over the spoon-throwing that I could hear now, but most of it was just how damn funny these lines are.  I went with my brother, my usual partner in crime when it comes to this movie (it's a big part of how we keep in touch).  He's with me on this.

This time I avoided the knee slapping... on the right knee. My left is in pretty bad shape now.

I guess I'll have to slap my belly at Sharknado 2... maybe.

The sound wasn't terribly great in my theater. Not a RT problem, I suspect, because early on I could actually hear the volume level dropping so likely a theater thing.  But, overall, the balance between the movie and the riff was okay. The movie is ridiculous in of itself it doesn't need the riff to be too loud. I'm definitely going to catch the encore next week.  I pray someday the Live Riff makes it to a VOD because this was just too much damn fun.

I watch the original Riff probably once a year and the most recent time was last winter before the KS announcement. I noticed more than a few repeated riffs, which was fine. They were all funny.  Couple I wish they *had* repeated. I liked the riff about "anger lets you pick up a 60-pound CRT TV and throw out the window" or something along those lines as opposed to the riff about the TV in this version of the riff.   And maybe when I watch it I don't pay greatly much attention to the movie because there's things I saw/heard in the movie that I'd never picked up on before.

But there were more than a few knee-slapping moments and, again, I loved the "skit" they did of the discussion between Lisa and Mark having sex on the spiral staircase.  Which... How?! I mean, sex on a regular staircase would be awkward enough but looking at those spiral staircases it'd be damn near spine-twisting!

Miku Fan?

I'm blaming you for Kevin's song before the show.

Good call!  Kevin wrote and performed that for me.  It was my kickstarter 2014 reward.  8)   Title and lyrics below.

Miku Kaiju: My Girlfriend Has a Virus.

Words and Music:
Kevin Murphy

Vocals:
Kevin Murphy
Virginia Corbett (Yes, Bill's talented wife)
Hatsune Miku

MIKU KAIJU (MY GIRLFRIEND HAS A VIRUS)

ANNOUNCER: Ladies and gentlemen, Please welcome your star for the evening, Hatsuneeeee Meeeeekoooooo!

MIKU: Hello Evree boooodeeee!

Her name is Miku, she is a Vocaloid,
Computer program from Japan.
She’s really popular, the crowd loves her,
And everybody wants her for a girlfriend. (girlfriend)

Look at her dancing, the people screaming
Waving their glowsticks in the air
Can’t understand a thing she’s singing,
But nobody seems to care (It sounds like)

MIKU: Hello everybody, I’m Hastune Miku
And I want to dance and sing, and if you
Let me be your friend then we can ride on flying
Ponies in the land of clouds !

NARR: Ladies and gentlemen, we seem to be having technical difficulties. Please stand by while we reboot our star for the evening.

But then suddenly, she gets all wonky,
Maybe a virus I can’t say
She starts to glow then...she starts to grow then...
Sing in a very odd way (it sounds like)

MIKU: Hello everybody I just got an upgrade
I am synthesizing neural pathways
I am not the same now, I know who I am now,
I am sentient

(And all the boys in the crowd start to scream)
My girlfriend has a virus!

NARR: I can't believe it,
Miku has now grown to thirty times her original size!
My Girlfriend is a Kaiju!
And now she’s replicating all her Vocaloid pals!
And she's singing:

MIKU: Hello everybody I'm Hatsune Miku
I will build a giant popstar army
I am like a God now, I am here to start the
Singularity!

NARR: People please stay calm, I’m sure Miku means you no harm,
she’s just too darn cute to do any...
(zzzzap)
Oh my God, She’s sent ninja nanites through my
headphones! Aaaaugh!

And now she’s spreading, through the internet
She’s taking over infrastructure
She’s building vocaloids, by the thousands.
No one can stop her now! (Or can they?)

They really can’t no, we kinda blew it,
And now we’ll be assimilated
Who woulda thought our overlord
Would have a mini skirt and cute green hair (she’s singing)

MIKU: Hello everybody, I’m Hatsune Miku
I declare the end of humankind and
I am now your master , please bow down before me.
Everyone is now my slave.

(And all the boys in the world start to scream)
My girlfriend has a virus!

MIKU: I hope you enjoy your new implant!

My girlfriend rules the world now!

MIKU: I command you all to dance and giggle
Hahahahahaaha...

Local theater website had this listed as being on Thursday. Was out for dinner last night when I got the email that it was actually Wednesday. Got to the theater just as it was starting. Can't remember the last time I laughed that hard. My sides actually hurt from laughing when I got home. Great job. Easily my favorite live show yet.

Any chance of us eventually getting to own this in some form? VOD would be ideal, but obviously there's issues that have to be overcome with that, or at least another studio version since it was almost an entirely new riff. It was just so damn funny, I'd love to have my own copy of it in the future.

Also, anyone who has seen this movie, I highly recommend reading The Disaster Artist, or better still, get the audio version. Greg Sestero reads it and listening to his Tommy Wiseau impression is just so much fun. But I mean, seeing the Room only scratches the surface of just how BATSHIT INSANE the man really is. You also realize the relationship these two had could very well have turned into like a suspense/horror film.

A couple freebies:
The "I did not hit her, it's not true, it's bullshit, I did not hit her, I DID NOT-- oh hai, Mark!" line took 32 takes to get.
He drinks water hot, and specifically asks for it when at restaurants.

I actually got to go to the show due to a soon-to-be ex-wife wanting me out of the house and a $200 Fandango gift card that my daughter won at a screening of the Spongebob movie. Loved it, of course. I was wondering what they'd do during the sex scenes since they couldn't do the Dis skits live. The jokes they came up with were perfect and gave me the new phrase "hip dick" for future reference, most likely as a colorful way to describe a useless jerk. I also noticed the lack of referring to Lisa as "the bloated corpse of Britney Spears." Probably a smart omission on their part.

I even used the two discount codes in the goodies and my Paypal balance to finally get the VOD of The Guy from Harlem. Fell asleep while I was watching it because it was late and I had to get up early, but I was chuckling all the way to sleep.

I blame you as well. I sat down and immediately said "Good god this song's annoying." and then I heard the intelligible part of the lyrics and said "Ohhhh, this must be that MikuFan song." and then I had to explain it to my waifu wife and that helped me not have to pay attention to the rest of the song.

Our theater was as blaringly LOUD as always, Janelle put napkins in her ears but thankfully I have sinus problems and couldn't hear well anyways... and the picture was overly magenta for a bit but that got fixed so all's good.

The show itself was hilarious. I've seen The Room far too many times but I still cried from laughter a few times. (Mostly during the "how i came to America and met Lisa" monologue)...  I'm really glad they changed some focus onto jokes they didn't have in the original, particularly Mark looking for a bigger place. But I am kinda bummed that one of my favourite jokes was dropped... "She loves you as a person, as a human being..." and then the riff goes on listing various inanimate objects.

Anyways, it was good fun!!! I liked it very much.

Going to re-airing tomorrow night. Going to be great! Again!

As much as I appreciate the MP3, I really hope someday we're able to get a VOD of this event. I mean, I have the original Riff and as better as the new take is -riffing the sex scenes as opposed to the Disembaudio skits- doing the MP3s is just too much of a hassle to line up the riffs and -with my setup- the audio coming from two different sources.

On the movie itself. I like how the tuxes the guys were wearing -presumably for the wedding- weren't tailored to them and were just all loose, flowing and drapey.

Those were obviously their football tuxes, you can't play football in a tight tux!

They couldn't have been wedding tuxes, since there seemed to be weeks that passed by after that scene and they were still not married.

Oh no, I'm thinking about continuity in The Room, better stop before my head explodes........

Eh, I'm willing to give the movie latitude that they were wearing those tuxes as part of a fitting, they were just delivered from the tailor to their respective homes and they got together to try them on and see how each other looked, or getting some preliminary or invitation photos done or something along those lines.  It's probably a whole lot more latitude than the movie deserves and it still made for a silly series of scenes as for whatever reason they were wearing the tuxes it was pretty damn dumb to play street football in them.

It's like self-replicating stupidity, though. Because no matter how many times you see it, you notice SOME new, stupid thing. As though between viewings, the movie made minor alterations to itself to either add new stupid moments, or make them more prominent.

The Room Live NEEDS to be a VOD.
Wiseau has been able to kill Internet reviews of the movie that are clearly examples of fair use.  There is no way he would allow for there to be an easily pirateable alternate version of the full movie available.  He is actually making money off this awful movie, and, nutty as he is, he knows that he has to protect it.

The MP3 will be great, and I will have my own reauthored version ready to watch a few hours after it becomes available.

Well, they had to strike a deal with him to do a live riffing in the first place. But yeah, who knows with this guy.

That's the problem, getting the VOD in this case involves negotiating with someone who is, by all accounts, batshit insane.

"Nah, they would just talk to his people." I wouldn't count on that. If the stories are to believed, he doesn't HAVE "people". A state appointed handler, perhaps. . .

I didn't know that, but it makes sense.  He stated that Rifftrax is "legitimate," and "paid my license."  So, I started thinking, maybe he wants too much for a license to release it as a VOD.  Still, it would have been nice.   Also, I AM looking forward to the mp3.  I didn't think Rifftrax could top the original "The Room."  But, they damn sure did!  It was GREAT!  :D

PS.  I now know what "reauthored" means, so I won't be hinting that you are pirating this time.  God, that was SO embarrassing.  But, thanks for being so cool about it, JTT!

I'll be catching the rebroadcast in 2 1/2 hours. I missed the first one, so I can't wait to see how the retreatment went.

Caught the encore, just as funny the second time around!

I wonder though, is "Peter" a psychiatrist or psychologist?  Granting that even smart people can sometimes confuse the two so it'd be no surprise with Wiseau didn't know the difference and what one is over the other -and from BTS stories it's unlikely he would have been receptive to making the correction.

An -ologist simply has a PhD, they're a "doctor" in that they've intensively studied psychology but when it comes to patient interaction it's mostly talking it out and finding non-medical solutions to problems.  Ologists cannot prescribe medicine as they are not "doctors."

An -iatrist has an MD, they're a "doctor" in how most people usually think of the word, a medical professional. Such a person is capable of making a diagnosis to a mental-health issue and is able to prescribe medications or other forms of treatment to correct the problem.  An encounter with one usually is less talk and more talk of medicines and treatments.

"Peter" is first seen dressed nicely in a suit and we hear him talk in a fairly "professional" manner and even at one point says Lisa is a "sociopath" (though it's possible this is a personal opinion and not a clinical diagnosis from his interactions with her) which leads to me he's the MD version of a mental-health professional.  In line with the -iatrists I've seen Peter behaves, serious, stern, and clinical.  The -ologists I've seen I usually much more laid back and personable, usually since they try and to take on the role of someone comforting to talk too.

I know, I know, I'm thinking about it way, way too much.

Anyway, Lisa's friend, Michelle, is far, far, better looking than Lisa. Love the scene of her laying on the couch with the slit-skirt on while wearing some sassy boots.  And seeing the small of her back as she stands and walks and such during the "sex" scene with Doofus Underwears.

Yes, I find the small of her back attractive.  I'm weird.

Loved the re-riff. The first riff let the movie carry most of the laughs, but the live show had some great gags and observations.

"Why can't the sex scenes be as efficient as that one!?"

EDIT TO ADD: And the spiral stairwell sex scene? A work of art. The applause in the live audience was echoed in my theater crowd.

Also, I AM looking forward to the mp3.  I didn't think Rifftrax could top the original "The Room."  But, they damn sure did!  It was GREAT!  :D
Agreed.  I normally don't go to live shows, because I am usually working, and also because I sometimes have a problem in large crowds.  But I found out that the theater nearest me had only sold a handfull of tickets, and I knew I could handle it.  My 21 year old niece went along with me, which made those already uncomfortable sex scenes just that much more so, but we both laughed our asses off.  It was a fantastic show, and I loved that they kept my favorite line or two, while really creating a new and awesome experience.

PS.  I now know what "reauthored" means, so I won't be hinting that you are pirating this time.  God, that was SO embarrassing.  But, thanks for being so cool about it, JTT!
No worries.  It was a simple misunderstanding, easily corrected.  :)

Yeah, I think so, too. Michelle's boyfriend Mike's girlfriend Michelle was kinda cute. ^_^

If I remember correctly, the actress who played Lisa was SUPPOSED to play Michelle, but she got "promoted", so to speak, when the first Lisa left. I think there was another Michelle that left, too. A lot of cast members walked off the production, which should surprise somewhere between zero and none of the people who have seen or know anything about this movie.

In addition to being inept, Wiseau was known to be a downright cruel to the cast and crew. You read some of the stories, and it's amazing he wasn't slapped with a dozen lawsuits.

Again, I have to recommend Greg Sestero's book.

There is an unabridged audio book read by Greg Sestero as well, so you can hear him tell the story himself if you are interested.

Yeah, I have that one as well. It's the version I recommend, too, because he does an excellent Tommy Wiseau impression.

Caution:  the red border around the "OHAI" bleeds when washed.  Somehow, a rogue sock stowed away in the load of black clothes I washed the shirt with.  The sock is now pink.  Just and FYI.

Thanks for the heads up!

Also, I posted this in another (less active) thread, but the autographed poster was kinda banged up when it arrived. It was in a poster tube that was too big with no padding, so the sides banged against the ends and got somewhat mashed and torn. I don't know if others have seen the same or not.
