It's coming out tomorrow. And I swore to myself I would never see that movie. Oh well, the riff makes it worth the pain.

Well said, Grizzly Adams, Jr.   Riffed is the only way I will watch this movie, and I expect a lot of pain.

LUMBAR.  hahahahaha!!!!  Not only did I LOL, I have tears in my eyes.
I was going to call him "Lamebatch," once, but didn't know if it would be taken as a joke or an insult. Stating for the record, it's a joke. So, I may use it in the future.  But right now, LOL @ Lumbar!

Specifically to alert me to new releases of official Rifftrax releases (not the wannabee Rifftrax Presents) when the slacker mods forget to post the news.

This happened with the last two National Geographic episodes that aired. I was a tad upset that I missed them.

Just to be clear - the Announcements section was made the news area when forum members complained that release announcements were not "coming soon."

The NatGeo stuff was also posted EVERYWHERE else, even elsewhere on this forum. I highly recommend that you follow something in addition to this board because this is not the primary place for RiffTrax announcements. I post updates on my own initiative and a lingering affection for the early to mid '00s - no one is assigned the duty of keeping the forum informed nor have they for a few years now - and I do try to maintain somewhat of a life outside of RiffTrax so I might miss something from time to time. Which I'm not going apologize for.

Hey, Thrashbuddah,

This thread is for fun.   You all do a good job of keeping us informed, though I am utterly SHOCKED  :speechless:   you have a life outside of Rifftrax.

The newsletter (emails) are a great way to keep informed.  Also, we can keep track of RT's Facebook and Twitter, by going to rifftrax.com It's right on the main page. Don't even need a twitter or facebook account.  I prefer the emails, myself.  They are always timely and land right in my mailbox.

Also, when something is announced, either on the forum or in an email, conversations about it start here on the forum.  So, things get "announced" multiple times, in multiple places.

I can't speak for Professor Lembach, but I assume that at this point, the comments made here about not keeping us informed are just good-natured ribbing.

I don't have any complaints.  I'm a happy customer.   :highfive:

Oh, I gotcha and I didn't mean to come across harsh - I'm just covering the bases since this has been a thing in the past and there is still some confusion as to the best way to stay up to date on the Riffing goings on. My advice still stands - this forum is not the primary outlet for RiffTrax news. To really stay on top of things I would recommend following the Twitter or Facebook feed - that's where everything ends up first.

Translation: I don't even have to be here so, like, deal with it.

That's cool. Rifftrax doesn't give a shit about its official forums anymore. Maybe you should pass the torch to someone that does.

Title: Re: Lembatch: If you don't specifically
Post by: Pak-Man on April 29, 2015, 02:21:24 PM
Well don't close them!

There's no torch. There's just the fans over here, and Rifftrax over there. They have bigger social media fish to fry. If you're coming here for the latest news, the board is probably going to be a few steps behind the more popular social media. But it's still a great place to talk about Rifftrax, and it boasts the finest group of eccentrics I've had the pleasure of knowing on this great big internet. I mean we opened up a thread just for YOU, Lembach! And we've been keeping it pretty up-to-date between the lot of us. That's pretty cool, and kudos to all the fellow fans that have posted tidbits up in this thread for the social-media-impaired.

I mean- if they WANT to give certain board moderators the inside line on what the next Rifftrax is gonna be so that we could tease things to the board and drum up a little interest, I'd be up for that... :^)

That's a pretty rough translation, but it's only partially accurate, so let me clear up the confusion. Casey (Thrashallah) is our main video editor guy, so when you assume he "doesn't need to be here" it's more like "he really actually shouldn't be here because he HAS VIDEOS TO EDIT RIGHT CASEY?!?"

We do give a shit about our official forums, but they are not the main vein of communication for announcements about new releases and that sort of thing anymore. They used to be, back in 2006, before Facebook and Google took over our lives. But now they're not. I'm sorry if this offends you or upsets you in any way.

Maybe you should pass the torch to someone that does.

Are you volunteering?

We have a few volunteer moderators who are also able to post anywhere, but again, they are unpaid volunteers, so I don't blame them for not posting much (if at all) especially with regard to major announcements. We don't really have the resources to pay a full-time forum administrator, if that's what you are implying we should do.

The forum is really a place for fans to gather, and not really a channel for real-time, up-to-the-minute news, but I'm absolutely open to letting other mods know about announcements ahead of time. Being such a small group makes it difficult to keep everything as well-oiled as a machine like ours should be, so apologies for that. I admit it is one of the things we don't have nearly as much time to dedicate towards as I wish we did - but again, it's a resource issue.

I mean- if they WANT to give certain board moderators the inside line on what the next Rifftrax is gonna be so that we could tease things to the board and drum up a little interest, I'd be up for that... :^)

I'm up for that too. If you're interested in helping us manage the forum in this vein (I don't want Mr. Lembach to think his complaints are falling on deaf ears) perhaps we can work something out, either through chat/IM or something along those lines.

Right now my instructions are to wait until there's a product page and then post the announcement, which would kind of kill the 20 questions concept, but I've asked if I can tease things a little early and will know more soon!

Grug: Shoot a message to Thrashalla and see if you can get in on this. It would be nice to be more than one deep. :^)

Stand down, Grug³,  I got it covered.  So, you're gonna make me a Super-Mod, with "all access clearance" to inside info, right?  Also, I want the right to proclaim that anyone not using the  :highfive: gif is to be banned on sight.  We're gonna whip this place into shape, and fast!   Oh, and  I will not divulge inside information!

Hey, everyone! This just in from my secret sources: Kevin's having spaghetti for dinner tonight!

Anyhoo, thank you all, again, for bending over backwards, again, to please again, the relatively small group of fans, again, that live on the forums...again.

You didn't have to do all this. But, you did and for that, thank you!

Frankly, the newsletter (email) keeps us up to date quite well. It's all that's needed to stay up to date. And as I said before, we can click on the twitter or Facebook link at http://www.rifftrax.com to keep updated, and we don't even need a Facebook or Twitter account.

OK, I'm done complaining.  Back to looking at RVR and Lembach's animated gifs.  I just love those things!  ;D

The newsletter is great, I follow their twitter and facebooks too. Also it almost always IS posted here int he forums.

I'm just for making announcements a bit more fun with the guessing games, but also cool with Rifftrax not wanting to do that too. If they want to control announcements, that would be totally understandable.

They seem fairly loosey-goosey with it these days though, often teasing it on Twitter beforehand, so I thought I'd suggest it.

OUR STORY SO FAR:

Lembauch was bummed because a Rifftrax snuck out without his knowledge. Mr. Fan decided to create a thread to appease him and it became an unofficial announcement site that we'd post things to when we found out about them through other channels. Then some stuff happened and Rifftrax staff got involved and they agreed to give me some advance notice of releases so I could make sure they were communicated here. Now I try to post things as quickly as possible to the announcement board and give people a heads-up if something is coming.

Join us next time, when Miku Fan says...

Hi, friends, haters and ignorers. :P
There has been a horrific development on the completely random thoughts thread. :o    The Man of Pak was de-enloopened.  I assume this was an accident, as he has done a great job, so far!

Anyhoo, Grug³ has mentioned that three new riffs are being announced today.  He revealed that one of the three is possibly the new Janet and Cole riff.
I believe this to be accurate, as I have super-secret insider info that Mike and Connor are going to release a video announcing the other two riffs.

   In fact, here's the announcement:

The Batch's position on only getting "Professional jokes! By professional comedy professionals!" is in a curious grey area here.

Janet Varney and Cole Stratton bring (and indeed perform alongside Mike, Bill and Kevin) The Batch his beloved comedy shorts live performances. Favorites in his Rifftrax collection!

The Batch has some thinking to do.

I didn't say I didn't like them. In fact, I like them because they do the live shorts events.

But I have a policy of only buying Mike's, Kevin's, and Bill's work. They are Rifftrax. They are what was MST3K.

Buying "Life in The Suburbs with Bridget Nelson and Mary Jo Pehl" was acceptable because both have starred or appeared in MST3K.

Janet Varney and Cole Stratton have performed with our illustrious trio. They might fall under the buy policy.

Their samples have never done anything for me.

Samples almost never do anything for me, even when it's official Rifftrax.  I just take a chance that the riff is going to be good, based on past performance.  That has worked quite well for me, including Rifftrax Presents riffs.

I'm about 30 minutes into the new Janet and Cole riff, and I must say, I am quite happy with it.  Good riffing!  :highfive:

Babbling

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Babbling (also called twaddling) is a stage in child development and a state in language acquisition, during which an infant appears to be experimenting with uttering articulate sounds, but not yet producing any recognizable words. Babbling begins shortly after birth and progresses through several stages as the infant's repertoire expands and vocalizations become more speech-like.[1] Infants begin to produce recognizable words usually around 12 months, though babbling may continue for some time afterward.[2]

In humans[edit]

Babbling is a state in language acquisition. These vocalizations do not contain meaning or refer to anything specific. Human infants are not excited or upset when babbling, but instead they will babble spontaneously and incessantly only when emotionally calm.

The sounds and expressions of babbling are produced before an infant begins to construct recognizable words.[3] This is mainly due to the immaturity of the vocal tract and neuromusculature at this age in life.[4]

Infants first begin vocalizing by crying, followed by cooing and then vocal play. These first forms of sound production are the easiest for children to use.

When reaching an age of 6 months, infants are finally able to control the opening and closing of the vocal tract, and upon obtaining this ability, infants begin to distinguish between the different sounds of vowels and consonants. This period is known as the beginning of the canonical stage. During the canonical stage, the babbling involves reduplicated sounds containing alternations of vowels and consonants (e.g.; baba or bobo).

By the time an infant reaches 8–9 months, they display productions of more advanced sounds known as variegated babbling. Variegated babbling differs greatly from reduplicated babbling. This stage includes more complex combinations of consonant and vowel syllables (e.g.; babadoobe).[4]

By 9–10 months of age, infant babbling begins to resemble the native language of a child. The final stage is known as conversational babbling, or the "jargon stage" (usually occurring by about ten months of age). The jargon stage is defined as "pre-linguistic vocalizations in which infants use adult-like stress and intonation".[5] The general structure of the syllables that they are producing is very closely related to the sounds of their native language and this form of babbling significantly predicts the form of early words.[6]

Infants continue to use intonation patterns and timing that matches the characteristics of their language.[4] Most babbling consists of a small number of sounds, which suggests the child is preparing the basic sounds necessary to speak the language to which he is exposed.

If babbling occurs during the first year of life, it can typically be concluded that the child is developing speech normally. As the baby grows and changes, his/her vocalizations change as well. Babies use these vocalizations to communicate. They commence vocal development by crying, progress to loud yelling noises, and finally make speech.

Types[edit]

There are two types of babbling. Reduplicated babbling consists of repeated syllables consisting of a consonant and a vowel, such as "da da da da" or "ma ma ma ma",[7] whereas variegated, or non-reduplicated babbling consists of a mix of syllables, such as "ka-da-bu-ba-mi-doy-doy-doy".[8]

The consonants that babbling infants produce tend to be any of the following : /p, b, t, m, d, n, k, ɡ, s, h, w, j/. The following consonants tend to be infrequently produced during phonological development : /f, v, θ, ð, ʃ, tʃ, dʒ, l, r, ŋ/. The complex nature of sounds that developing children produce make them difficult to categorize, but the above rules tend to hold true regardless of the language to which children are exposed.[9]

Link between babbling and language[edit]

Two hypotheses have been devised in order to explain how babbling is related to language development.
The Continuity Hypothesis - According to these claims, babbling is a direct forerunner to language. At first, infants produce universal sounds that exist in all areas of the world and in all languages. "Reduplicated canonical babbling"[10] produces a number of sounds but only some of them ("ma ma" and "da da", turning into "mommy" and "daddy", respectively) are recognized as meaningful and thus reinforced by caregivers and parents, while the others are abandoned as meaningless (this is the argument in, for instance, Susanne Langer's Philosophy in a New Key).[11] This hypothesis agrees with the claim that the anatomical changes of the vocal tract are very important, but suggests that the social environment in which an infant is raised has a greater influence on the development of language. Infants pay close attention to their caregivers' reactions and use their feedback as approval to the sounds that they are making. This reinforcement through feedback helps infants to focus their attention on very specific features of sound. Social feedback facilitates faster learning and earlier production of a variety of advanced words.[2]
The Discontinuity Hypothesis - This alternative idea suggests that babbling has absolutely no relationship to language development. According to this hypothesis, infants produce sounds in no particular order and as they grow, they may drop certain sounds only to pick them up again in later months. This is a giant step backwards and as infants grow, they may incorrectly and inconsistently use sounds that they had already conquered in the early babbling stages. Sometimes, they lose them all together before learning how to speak. Over time, infants will relearn sounds and develop words in a specific language.[4] The hypothesis also implies that when children finally reach the age where they are able to learn their native language, they develop phonological sounds in an orderly manner. There can be a period of silence between productions of babbling and productions of the first words in speech.

There is no clear evidence for either of these hypotheses, leaving them both as possibilities for connections between the speech stages in life.[10]

As suggested in the continuity hypothesis, there is some evidence that babbling varies depending on the linguistic environment in which a baby is raised. For example, it has been noted that infants raised in French speaking environments display greater amounts of rising intonation in comparison to infants raised in English speaking environments. This is due to the differences between French and English intonations while speaking. By comparing infants in English, French, Swedish and Japanese linguistic backgrounds, babbling reveals that placement of consonants and vowels also resembles native languages. These findings support another hypothesis; the “babbling drift hypothesis” in which infant babbling resembles the phonetic characteristics of their native language through exposure to speech. When infants are exposed to two languages after birth, they typically babble in their dominant language. The dominant language is considered to be the one that children have the most exposure to. Infants do not produce a blend of languages while babbling and sometimes they may choose which language they prefer to babble in based upon particular features.[12]

Physiology[edit]

A human mouth moves in distinct ways during speech production. The International Phonetic Alphabet was formed in 1897 as a representation of the sounds produced by language. When saying each individual sound out loud, it is noticeable that a human uses different parts of their mouth, as well as different methods to differentiate particular sounds. During the beginnings of babbling, infants tend to have greater mouth openings on the right side. This finding suggests that babbling is controlled by the left hemisphere of the brain.[13] The larynx or voicebox, originally high in the throat to let the baby breathe while swallowing, descends during the first year of life, allowing the pharynx to develop and facilitating the production of adult-like speech sounds.[14]

Reduplicated babbling (such as bababa) involves a rhythmic opening and closing of the jaw.[15] According to the Frame Dominance Theory, when the mandible (jaw) is elevated, a consonant sound will be produced. When the mandible is depressed, a vowel like sound is produced. Therefore, during a reduplicated sequence of sounds, the consonant and vowels are alternated as the mandible elevates and depresses. The opening and closing of the mouth alone will not produce babbling. Phonation is necessary during the entire movement in order to create a meaningful sound. Other important body parts involved in articulation, such as the tongue, lips and teeth remain in a stable resting position during babbling.[13] However; the position of the tongue is not always controlled during the open and close cycle of the mouth. Also, sound is not constantly produced throughout these cycles of mouth movements. Sometimes during the babbling period, the motions can be made without any vocalization at all.[6] Deaf infants produce manual babbling through similar rhythmic alternations, but they perform with their hands instead of their mouths. As a baby begins to produce sounds beyond the reduplicated sequences of babbling, they exhibit equal sized mouth or hand openings on the right and left sides.[15]

Children who cannot babble for some physiological reason, such as having a breathing tube in their throat, do subsequently acquire normal pronunciation but their speech development is significantly delayed.[16]

In deaf infants[edit]

Vocal babbling[edit]

It has been moderately challenging to study deaf infants in the past because it is uncommon to diagnose hearing disabilities within the first year of a child’s life. It is also difficult to locate deaf infants that have had severely impaired hearing since birth, have been diagnosed within the first year of their lives, and do not suffer from any other impairments.[10]

Research has been conducted to determine whether or not infants with impaired hearing can demonstrate typical vocal sounds. Infants who are deaf do show signs of vocal babbling, but in minimal amounts. This suggests that early babbling arises from inherent human tendencies to use the vocable articulators in particular ways during early language acquisition. Babbling of any language should appear if the child is exposed to a source of communication, but babbling can be delayed or non-existent for deaf children.[6] However, contradictory evidence supports that language will not develop fully without auditory experience.[10] Therefore, deaf children are not only significantly delayed in language development in comparison to their speaking counterparts, but they also produce fewer noises.[17] This suggests that experience with auditory speech is necessary in language development. Some researchers have taken these findings as evidence against the hypothesis that language is an innate human capability.[13]

There are exceptions to these studies on the occasion that infants are not completely impaired of all hearing. Children with varying degrees of hearing loss display different speech signals and babbling. Those with more severe hearing loss have less experience with auditory communication and therefore show worse canonical babbling and language production. Some deaf infants will never reach the canonical stage of babbling, thus never speaking at all.[17]

In order for hearing impaired humans to gain auditory experience, a number of solutions have been implemented. Hearing aids can be used to help infants reach babbling stages earlier.[10] Cochlear implants have also been tested. Once the surgical implantation is complete, an infant begins to listen and have experience with language outputs. As soon as language has been heard, they begin to babble and speak in rhythmic patterns just as normal hearing infants do.[13]

Manual babbling[edit]

Although all infants move their hands in imitation to what is modeled in their environment, around 9–12 months deaf infants begin to produce gestures that are distinct from all other hand movements. This was originally thought to represent the first indicators of sign language. Just as hearing infants babble with their mouths, deaf infants babble with their hands.[15] Deaf children acquire signs for the same concepts that are present in English speaking children,[6] but deaf infants do not reach this stage of babbling until 10 months or later.[10] Children are able to produce manual articulation of words correctly, which is important since many articulation tendencies of manual babbling transfer to the children’s early sign production and then later into the production of words.[6]

Interestingly enough, if a hearing infant has deaf parents, they will still imitate the signs that they see their parents displaying. This is evidence that manual and vocal babbling is possible in both hearing and deaf infants.[15] If infants are exposed to sign language, regardless of whether they themselves are deaf or hearing, they will babble with their hands at approximately the same time vocal babbling appears. Sign production appears a few months before word production generally does in hearing children.

After it was established that deaf infants could babble through other means than their mouths, the patterns in which productions occurred were studied. Hearing and speaking infants follow identical maturational paths in language acquisition. Both go through a number of stages, and exhibit similar complexity in their babbling sequences. In studies where deaf and hearing children were compared, deaf children produced more multi-movement manual babbling than children with their hearing.[6]

Deaf babbling is now titled manual babbling, and is structurally identical to vocal babbling in its development.[15] The most common sign in manual babbling is where all fingers are extended and spread and it is also related to the first signs an infant will make.[6] There are three main components to manual babbling. The hand gestures contain a restricted set of phonetic units, a syllabic organization and are used without reference or meaning. This is comparable to the important aspects of vocal babblings.[15]

In nonhumans[edit]

Songbirds[edit]

Not only are songbird and human language parallel regarding neural and molecular factors, they also are similar in how their communication is initially produced. Observations about these similarities can be traced back to Charles Darwin and his studies. Avian and mammalian brains are similar in form and connectivity and there may even be a gene that is relevant to speech found in both organisms. The learning of a song is produced through a mix of interaction, experience, and predisposition as shown when young songbirds will imitate their species call when presented with songs from their own and another species. They are physically capable of producing either song, but do not. Humans learn language through similar means, which is why this early vocalization in songbirds is considered babbling.[18]

Young male songbirds produce a variety of immature songs that often are referred to as babbling because the immaturity precedes the fully developed mature song. As with humans, if these sounds are reinforced with positive social feedback, they are more likely to recur. Since the females do not sing songs, they are in charge of providing the feedback. If females provide more social signals, males will develop more mature songs at a faster rate than other male birds. Young birds require reinforcement from adults in order to finalize their songs. Another relation to human infants, is that the amount of vocalizations is not key, but rather the quality of the sounds that is retained and resembles the final produce of language.[19]

Another important factor is the physiology of the animal where brain regions used in analyzing and processing information and the properties of the ear and vocal tract are critical determinants to how song is interpreted and later produced. In studies using isolated birds that have not had exposure to song, they produce an abnormal ‘isolate song’ that still retains species-specific aspects. This shows that the neural pathways have predetermined features that allow for such a phenomenon to occur. The pathways are able to allow for plasticity of the songs that can be learned in the future.[18]

There is an important phase in development when song learning is best accomplished. This phase is called the ‘sensitive period’ and the amount of change that a songbird experiences in adulthood varies by species. Young birds have a production phase after a listening phase of development. The production of song is called ‘subsong’ where vocalizations resemble that of an adult as time passes. Memory for songs are able to form before the period where learning to sing occurs. Social interaction is important when dealing with vocal learning where non-singing females can even influence an infant through feedback.[18]

Pygmy marmosets (Cebuella pygmaea)[edit]

Pygmy marmosets have been studied and found to produce complex vocalizations 2–3 weeks after birth. Both sexes are capable of creating calls at a rate of 3 calls/second and each bout of calls can last up to 6 or 7 minutes. A normal series of calls for a pygmy marmoset contains approximately 10 different call types. This abundance of call forms produced by this creature is comparable to babbling in human infants for a multitude of reasons. Like reduplicative babbling in humans, the call type is often repeated several times before a new sequence of sounds is produced. The vocalizations also gain attention from caregivers and provide practice for future vocal behavior. For these reasons, pygmy marmoset calls are also distinguished as babbling behavior.[20]

There are a total of 16 call types in pygmy marmoset babbling language. Different calls serve different survival functions such as when desiring food and social interaction or during times of alarm. As human infants do, marmoset babies have higher rates of social interaction when producing babbling sounds. During the juvenile age, marmosets often regress back to babbling stages if a new infant is born. It is suggested that their production of babbling calls increases because they are seeking attention and social interaction. Another babbling occurrence during the juvenile age is the addition of territorial calls and mild threat vocalizations. Although babbling is important for practicing adult calls during the juvenile age, babbling decreases with age in pygmy marmosets. Overall, babbling progresses through a series of stages from infancy to adulthood and slowly leads to the construction of adult calls.[20]

Well there was another paragraph, but it exceeded the character count limit I didn't know the forum had.

Sac-winged bat (Saccopteryx bilineata)[edit]

Babbling-like behavior in songbirds, humans and some nonhuman primates has been previously researched, but it has not been seen until recently in non-primate mammals. The sac-winged bat (Saccopteryx bilineata) is a social creature and the vocalizations that they produce depend on the social situation that the animal is in. This bat has a large repertoire of vocalizations with males being more vocal than females. Echolocation pulses, barks, chatters, and screeches are used in various social situations including courtship and territorial defense. Infants produce isolation calls if their mothers are absent, but the pups also produce vocalizations that mirror those of adults. Both sexes of infants babble, even though as an adult, the vocalizations are solely produced by males. Social context, mothers, and surrounding bats do not influence pups because the multiple vocalizations are combined regardless of the situation. Since there is not a social aspect correlated with the vocalizations, the productions of the sounds suggest that the pups vocalize for training. The pups repeat and combine adult vocalizations so that they resemble babbling in what humans, other primates and some songbirds do as infants. However, while human babbling increases social interactions, there are no social responses to babbling in bats. Babbling is common in infants that have a large repertoire of adult vocalizations to learn and this is seen in the pups of Sac-Winged bat.[21]

Don't want to say too much, but it's been at least mentioned by several prominent board members at various points in time.

A quick search shows it's been mentioned 25 times. And the list of people mentioning it is like a who's who of Rifftrax Forum history. I'm not familiar with this one, myself, but it looks like fun. :^)

Really?  What's it called?

Is it me or does the Rifftrax market seem a little over saturated lately? It seems like a new VOD every week and a live show every month. I'm not complaining but I'd hate to see the guys burn out. Not to mention the strain on my wallet.

It's you.  ;D

Seriously, though,  if I recall correctly, there was a call for more riffttrax:  "Not enough releases," we said.  This year, again, if I recall correctly, is the first time they'll do 4 live shows in one year.

I don't want them to burn out, either.  I'd rather have fewer releases, than have them lose their edge.

In my opinion, that's why shorts are so important.  Cool, comfortable, breathable, plenty of room for your  um, quick, fun and easy.

That's also why Rifftrax Presents are so important! Mary Jo and Bridget, Cole-n-Slaw, Matthew J. Elliott and Ian Potter, and so on.  They are important because it gives the guys a break, and THEY'RE FUNNY.
 :highfive:

Anyhoo, I don't know if they are saturated or not.  I'm happy with the output, myself, but I do understand what you mean.

Apparently they've already done at least some of the recording on it, according to their Twitter. So maybe another movie popped up that they got excited about and jumped on? For all we know, that might have been Rollergator.

Ha! That's different.

I believe The Room isn't coming out as a VOD (or at least, it wasn't planned as one, unless they negotiate it later)

A studio recording is being released as an MP3.

I once had a guy throw a fit because I told him the problem with his software was that he was not logged on as an administrator.  He screamed for 10 minutes about how he was the "computer administrator" for his whole company because he knew EVERYTHING about computers and I was obviously just trying to weasel out of doing my support job, getting hotter and hotter as I tried explaining the difference between Windows admin rights and office titles.

So...I said "let's start the troubleshooting, we'll be here a while.  Insert the disk please."  He said, "Ok, does the silver side go up or down?"  There was silence for about 20 seconds until he said, "maybe I better look into that admin thing" and hung up.

So I ask you...do you have Windows admin rights to your crystal ball?

Those darn future hackers are always trying to switch off access to the future so we can't see what they are going to do.
Linux based crystal balls need their search script set to executable, "chmod 777 /usr/local/sbin/showmethefuture" should do it.
Of course you will need to be logged in as root to do that.

Post by: Parker_Hylton on November 13, 2015, 10:51:45 AM
Well, of course if the crystal ball has a LINUX OS then it's considered external storage and you need to make sure it's properly mounted.

So far it's just been The Wizard, and they explained that they were playing it a little differently for this one.

Running it through my corporate-speak translator, I'd say Mike and Bill's announcement of the Riff on Twitter led to a lot of traffic on the site, and they wanted to give all those people a chance to put their $10 in now.

Miami Connection Live is up there as a pre-order also, just an FYI

Exactly. I didn't bitch until it started to become a trend.

Pre-orders on digital items is just greedy. You don't need to reserve a copy because there isn't a limited supply.

Produce a product, then you get money.

You don't have to preorder you know. It's an option if you want it. I love knowing what's coming up even though I don't preorder myself.

Knowing beforehand is why I come here and read my emails and follow on FB.

What I do not like is coming to the Rifftrax store, and seeing two new items and finding out that I can't watch them until a future date. Oh, but I can give them the money now. Yay?

I'd expect this from EA Games or Konami. Not Rifftrax.

So you want to know about titles as soon as possible after release, but not a moment before. They're pretty much passing out information that I (occasionally) just get in an IM with instructions not to tell anyone about the title until it's launched.

It's a Riff, not a video game. It's not like Mike's gonna say, "Woo! We got a bunch of preorders, so we don't have to make this one as funny as we usually do!"

Yes! As a matter of fact, I do.

Which worked up until now, because.....?

We would hope not, wouldn't we?

Otherwise, I see no point in it. What is the purpose of a pre-order on a digital item? So I can reserve a copy before they are all gone? No. That can't be it. Hmmm....We're told about the releases on social media and in emails when they get released....so that can't be it......
Title: Re: Lembatch: If you don't specifically
Post by: Pak-Man on November 16, 2015, 02:15:51 PM
It's so people have the option to spend the money on it while they're still thinking about it. I want The Wizard now, but there's a chance that by the time it's released, I'll have forgotten about it. Putting my money down ensures I'll have it on that first day instead of forgetting about it and then remembering the next Monday that I should have picked it up, and if I can just remember to get it when I get home...

It's beneficial to Rifftrax. I'll admit there isn't a ton of utility for the Customer other than the ability to say loud and early, "I support this choice of Rifftrax!" It doesn't hinder the customer either.

Like I said, in the video game world, we have to worry about games being released before they're "done," Day 1 DLC, Launch Bugs, etc. Preorders have been problematic there. Rifftrax has their system down, and won't get a chance later on to release a patch for The Wizard if it's not funny enough. If they sell a bunch in advance, that should actually motivate them to make it better. It means there's a lot of eyes on this Riff so they need to make it good to keep up their reputation.

You have yet to make a convincing case it's bad business.

You miss nothing by not preordering. People who want to can.

Offering people options is actually good business.

On top of that, it advertises upcoming riffs on their site without requiring an ad.

I genuinely hope it becomes standard practise.

I don't mind the pre-order option. It would be nice to have something in the picture or title of the link on the main page to indicate that it was a pre-order, though.

Hold on a moment!

Despite my personal belief that pre-ordering digital content is a shady business practice, that was not the point of my initial post.

I was expressing frustration at what looked like 2 available rifftrax that turned out to be unavailable. If you look at the display of new available content, you see these two items. There is no indication until you go in to buy the item that they are not currently available.

If you were to go riff shopping, would you not be excited to see two new vods?

Ah, but you go in and it's just a pre-order. I know! How about we fucking put pre-order up in that picture!

However, I DO agree it would be smart for them to have the words 'preorder' on those posters to avoid confusion. Shoot a message to Thrash, who I am guessing makes those images up, or Erik who runs the website. I am pretty sure they'd be open to suggestion.

Cyber Monday Deals at RiffTrax!

Strap on your fanciest VR headset and jack into the mainframe, it's Cyber Monday!

What is Cyber Monday, you ask? Well, it's a lot like regular Monday, but with more techno-jargon thrown around - terms that used to sound really futuristic to moviegoers in the 90s like "browser," "floppy disk," and "Internet."

Luckily, RiffTrax is a completely Internet-based organization, and so we have a pretty good idea of what makes something cyber. For example: right now, if you use the coupon code CYBER15 at Checkout, our site's computational algorithm will subtract 20% off almost everything* in your order, like magic. CYBER MAGIC!

PLUS! If you spend $10 or more we'll automatically add to your order an awesome Cyber Bonus Pack, featuring three hilarious downloads from the guys, including the new RIffTones song "My Girlfriend has a Virus" and the never-before-released radio show segments "Hollywood Pitch Meeting" and "Bruce Willis Needs a Nap"!

http://www.rifftrax.com/cyber-tracker

Cyber Tracker! No, it’s not a spyware killing program from the early 2000s that, when downloaded, actually adds MORE spyware to your computer. This Cyber Tracker is a robot policeman designed through a shady collaboration between the shady government and a shady corporation, and those usually work out pretty well in movies.

But this isn’t just any Terminator knockoff, it’s far weirder than that. Taking on the vaguely cyborg, not-vaguely hairless menace is Don “The Dragon” Wilson. Don “The Dragon” is an actual martial arts expert but not an actual dragon, or actor. He is a hired bodyguard, who immediately turns on his evil bosses when he notices he’s taking orders from an Australian bro with a permed mullet. Don “The D” escapes to join a revolutionary group headed by a newscaster who just happens to also be a top-level hacker because sure, why not. Will they fall for each other while tracking the Tracker? First Don will have to get over his lost wife, who only comes up occasionally and is maybe dead but maybe just left him because he sucks, you’ll have to watch to find out!

Truly the Geo Tracker of 90s robot movies, with an ending you really, REALLY won’t see coming, log on with Mike, Kevin, and Bill for Cyber Tracker!

Don’t Let Go!

But the thing is - Commander Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), helming his last mission before retirement, does let go! And much much too early as far as Bridget and Mary Jo are concerned. It sorta seems like he wanted to die. Anyway, the point is he leaves Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock) on her own with nothing but the keys to a Chinese space ship. And guess what? It’s a stick shift! Kooky chaos ensues!

Join Bridget and Mary Jo as they riff their very first Hollywood blockbuster!

Well, let me know what you think when you watch it, but to me, a movie that is mostly one character, little dialogue and few scene changes doesn't lend itself well to riffing.

I haven't, but motp has penguins, which are pretty silly to begin with, and constant narration, yeah? This is a target that makes some sense to me.

Mamma mia! Some Italian filmmakers decided to rip off Jaws! The Last Shark doesn’t have the acting talent or music score budget of the original, but it does have a substantially higher percentage of actors with mustaches!

The town’s annual windsurfing regatta is threatened by the presence of a killer shark, and rather than do the sensible thing, cancel it and refund both the tickets they’ve sold, the town presses onward. The result: extremely hilarious shark attack special effects! Tell Mrs. Kintner to stop mourning and get her slappin' hand ready, it’s The Last Shark!

This seems like as good a place as any to post that The Guy From Harlem Rifftrax has just been added to Amazon Prime.

There are TWO REASONS that THIS is GOOD NEWS!  The first is...  well, my niece...

Seems like there should be, but if there is, I can't figure it out.

Lembach isn't around much any more, but seems to be a good a place as any to point out that the MST3k Reunion is purchasable now!

OK. I've been slacking on the announcement front and have added three announcements to the announcements board. I've also gone through and added discussion threads for the many, many shorts that came out this year that slipped through my fingers and into the ol' procrastination bucket. Sorry about that, and I'll try to keep things up to date.

I know Lembach hasn't specifically in a long time, but I thought I'd use this old thread to let those who get the Rifftrax Mailing List to check their folders. They gave everyone a link to claim a free $10 Rifftrax gift card.

If you've never tried R.O.T.O.R.,, that's my personal favorite. Everything in the "Rifftrax Essentials" section pretty much rules.

Yeah, I picked up ROTOR the last time they did one of these.  Hoping to find a good sci-fi or fantasy one.

For fantasy, try Jack the Giant Killer or Ator if you haven't seen them. For Sci-Fi, try Mind Ripper, Alien Outlaw or Deadly Instincts.
