Discuss strategies, news on the upcoming Wii game, or anything else Smash Bros!

Is there any trick to triggering Fox/Falco's alternate taunt?  I'm aware that it has to be on the Corneria stage, but I can't seem to get the timing down.

There's nothing quite as satisfying as reflecting a Luma back at a Rosalina. I hate that character so much. It's not that she's good, because she's really not. She's just irritating to play against, because Luma will take hits for her, and that's BULLSHIT.

Because of the amount of zoning characters that are extremely popular now, I've picked up Fox. Falco's better at playing against Zoners, but Fox has better options in case the opponent picks an aggressive character. It's really amusing to watch Link and Megaman realize they have to actually APPROACH me. And beating DHD is one of my favorite passtimes. Bowser, Palutena, and PacMan round out my set. I can't decide who I like more between Palutena and Pac, though... :(

I'm gravitating toward Pac-Man, and it's not just because he's Pac-Man. Every one of his moves are exactly what I want them to be. I'm also pretty decent with Duck Hunt. My old standbys, Bowser and Mr. Game and Watch are as deadly as ever. Looking forward to the Wii U version next week.

Deadly as ever? Bowser got MAJOR buffs, to the point where he's strong now. game and Watch seems pretty similar, but I never found him that great anyway. The current Metagame favors zoners because the 3DS control scheme works better with them; less need to smash. Aerial characters are practically unplayable. Circle Pad is still the biggest predator in For Glory, followed by Lag and Yoshi and his host of unbeatable moves.

When you choose to play Link, is it because you have no friends or want to have no friends? He's literally the least fun character to play against in the game, after DHD. He's half the reason I picked up Fox.

Wow. Is it possible to fall in love all over again with a game you've technically already been playing non-stop for the past month?

Don't forget, Club Nintendo types: Register both versions and you get a free soundtrack CD AND you'll get the Mewtwo DLC for free when it comes out next year.

For me, it's because he's the one I used in the original Smash Bros, though I do like DHD for all the nods and an interesting move set.

They haven't announced plans that far into the future yet. If I were Nintendo, I'd release Bowser Jr. to the mass market, then find 7 venues to release 7 exclusive Koopa Kid variants. Would love to have a Ludwig Amiibo.

I am finding myself verrrrry tempted to pick this one up. Partly because everyone is going mad for it, and partly because I am getting the Amiibos anyway...

I got asked to turn my 4 hour shift from 6-10 into a 12 hour shift from 6 to 6. Then I get to go home, nap for an hour, drive into KC, go to class for a few hours, and then come home, nap for 3, go to the gym, go to work for 12 hours, and repeat it without the gym. I don't know when I'll get to Smash, but I'm gonna play World of Light during breaks.

First impressions before I head to bed: It’s fun!  So far I’ve unlocked four or five characters. They come pretty quick if you are just doing regular fights. Much less quickly if you are doing story mode. But story more is pretty fun. There’s a whole bunch of stuff I don’t really understand with these spirits, but so far I like it. Have yet to unlock anyone I had really been looking forward to, but I’m sure that will change Saturday. I’m also curious to see how it feels with just the joycons instead of the pro controller. I’ll find that out on the subway tomorrow.

Dropped the tyke off at school and headed over to the local Target right as they were opening. No lines, no crowds. They hadn't even put the game out. So I asked her to check for the special edition and now I have a nice steel book version with a new Smash themed Pro Controller.

Loving the game so far. I'm WAY out of practice and got my butt kicked for a while, so I went to the new story mode (Which is fantastic) to brush up. Now I've unlocked Pac-Man and I'm kicking the right amount of butt.

So Fox is still great and one of my favorites. I only just now unlocked him in story mode after spending pretty much all day playing, considering I’m sick with a cold. I unlocked mega man. He’s interesting... but I don’t think he’s going to be one of my mains. I prefer the brawling style, and his move set seems a little repetitive in the ranged department.

One of my current mains that I wasn’t expecting is WiiFit Trainer. She’s great!  I love how her vocals sound so condescending when you’re beating the hell out of someone. Sheik is also quite good and a lot of fun. Ryu is another that is useful if I need a heavy hitter. I have yet to unlock Cloud or Bayonetta, so I’m still looking forward to that.

Been mainly playing story mode. Took a while to get the hang of the whole spirit thing, but I think I finally get it. It’s giant, by the way. So many fights. Some of them quite difficult.

Currently have 18 people left to unlock in the roster, which I wanted to do before going online. Unfortunately, I heard the Online in Ultimate is actually a step back from Sm4sh.

OH, and I saw a tip on Reddit today, there's a setting in the internet settings for each connection currently set at 1400, but if you put that up to 1500, you help your ping out significantly. Apparently Nintendo doesn't wanna be standard.

Local wireless is nice and smooth. But yeah even playing with a friend of mine there was a bunch of lag. It would run smooth for a good five minutes, and then super heavy lag for 30 seconds. It was playable, but definitely annoying.

I’m taking the scenic route and trying to focus on unlocking everyone in the World of Light. I’m finally in the area where Cloud is, I just need to figure out a few puzzles to get to him. I think Bayonetta is close as well, but I can’t find a good guide to

Decided that I need to pick up a main, and I guess it's time to put on yoga pants and get wine drunk, because I'm going to main Wii Fit Trainer. She's got weird moves, they all have weird timing, soccer balls, double sun power... And the fact that she gives fitness tips during her moves is the thing that sold me.

Now to learn my matchups by going through each character in the roster in order. Cheers!

A solid pick. She’s also one of my favorites. And she has the added benefit of instilling the feeling of ‘fuck, I just got the shit beat out of me by a yoga instructor?’ in my coworkers when I pick her.

Tomorrow is going to be filled with a lot of Smash at work, so I wanted to make sure I had Bayonetta and Cloud unlocked by then.  Got cloud in adventure mode but I had to cheat and unlocked Bayonetta in Classic mode. I don’t think you get Bayonetta until like the very last fight of story mode, and I just didn’t have enough time. I am happy to report that I like both of them a lot. Cloud took a few fights for me to get a hang of, but now that I understand his timings I love him. He’s such a whiny little bitch in his games, yet at the same time, is so fucking cool. But I guess that’s anime for you.  Bayonetta is just awesome. I like that the way her guns work carried over to Smash. I also like how her smash attacks are slightly offset from your character, which is just enough to throw people off a little. I still need to figure out the inner workings of her slow mo counter though.

I’m not a serious enough gamer to dedicate myself to maining anyone, but at this point, with over 60 characters unlocked, it feels like my rotation will be: Bayonetta, Little Mac, Cloud, Fox, Trainer.  Kind of in that order. When I want to mix things up I’ll go to the bench where I have: Daisy, Sheik, Simon, Ridley. Oh and I haven’t unlocked meta knight yet, so we’ll see if he fits in somewhere.

Basically anyone who was top tier in Smash WiiU got nerfed into the ground, so Cloud and Bayo are actually reasonable now. I might try to pick up Bayo, because she's pretty awesome.

Been trying to practice Dash Dancing. It sucks because I've got twitchy hands, so I tend to make a lot of mistakes when trying to keep the timing right. Fun fact about this game: if you either press Down on the stick or release the stick entirely mid dash, you will return to a standing state. This is great for fighters who have bad dash attacks or grabs, because often their standing grab is a lot better, and usually they have a better attack to hit with. Another neat option is the Stilt, or sliding tilt. During a dash, pivot quickly and throw out a tilt. You maintain a lot of the dash momentum, and it can be used either offensively or defensively. The input is essentially the same as the RAR, but you don't jump.

Wavedashing is back, too, but it's a lot less useful. Dash dancing is probably the technique you want to master to take your game up a peg.

Seems that I’m currently strongest with Cloud. I enjoy his limit break, because others usually aren’t paying attention to when I have it. He’s also powerful up close, but has a nice harassing ranged attack. I also enjoy his kirbyesque up special that can also come down quick and hard on enemies.

Now I need to get better with Bayonetta. In the serious competitive world it makes sense to put all your time into getting good at one character. But in the casual social circles I play in at work, it’s seen as cheap if you don’t rotate characters every couple matches.

Oh, and I rescind whatever compliments I had for the local wireless feature. It’s garbage unless you are littlerally a foot from the other person. I was shocked that we were experiencing a lot of lag at a comfortable four feet from one another. Oh, and the online lag is hot garbage. Thought maybe since I was paying for it it would be a little better. But nope. Still manages to be fun somehow, but it’s terrible.

Both Cloud and Bayo got nerfed hard from 4. They're actually just garbage competitively now, but they still have amazing kits.

Also, most people who play competitively have a main and a secondary who covers weak matchups. Say you're playing someone who's got really gimpable recovery most of the time, and then you go up against someone who's really good offstage, you'd want to pick up someone who can counter that to improve your matchup against characters like that.

Ridley is surprisingly fun to play, I'm excite. And Palutena is actually GOOD, like a hair's breadth from Top Tier.

Nah. Like I said, Piranha Plant is also DLC, but separate.  If you register the game through the Nintendo reward program, you’ll get the character for free when it releases, otherwise it’ll be available for purchase later.

Yeah, watch whatever Email you have tied to your My Nintendo account. A few days after registering for the gold coins (Or just purchasing it digitally) you'll get an Email with the code that gives you the Piranha Plant. Enter that, and it will automatically download when it comes out. (In February, I think.)

Ha, yeah that was one of the tougher ones. Had to come back to that one after getting a bunch of other spirits. The hardest for me was the fight in the donkey Kong section where there are three enemies and bullet bills spawn all the time. Took me forever to get past that one.

Trying to clear all the battles now after having beat the game, so I’m going back and doing the ones I skipped.

So, here's a combo that can clear any WoL stage that I've seen so far: Little Mac with Giant Zapfish and two Fist Power spirits, with Unflinching Smash and Hyper Smash in the skill tree. It basically means Little Mac can KO anyone with one punch, man.

I doubt anyone has been following the recent drama, but Liquid Salem, a pro Bayo player from Smash 4, has been shit talking prominent members of the Melee community. Theres a lot of stuff to unpack, but the main thing is that he's a moderately successful player with one tournament win at a major event attacking players like Armada, Axe, and Leffen, all players who have a lot more experience. Leffen is an abrasive heel in the Smash community, but Armada and Axe are widely considered some of the nicest people in that community. Basically, he keeps digging himself a deeper and deeper grave.

It took me a bunch of work to unlock her. Tried a few brawls to see if she would show up as a challenger. Then when that didn’t work there was a lot of googling, and then searching deep in my inbox for that code. So I feel I earned her. Should have a chance to try her once my boss gets back from the restroom.

If you have Olimar, play him with Fire/Explosion damage boosting spirits. You can get the fire pikmin dealing upwards of 80% per hit on some enemies.

On my 2DS I spectate a lot of SSB matches and I often wager who's going to be the winner. Oddly enough for a LOT of these matches, all four players will do nothing, and I mean NOTHING until it's Sudden Death time, and only then will there be a real victor. I just think it's odd because it's almost like a lot of players are letting chance, not skill decide the outcome of their matches.

Is it just me or does the Switch not have very much memory to work with?  I keep hitting the limit.

Yeah you pretty much have to buy an SD card.

Yeah.  I hit a wall where I couldn't install the patch.  So I archived some and deleted others and then I accidentally archived Smash itself and that's when I got the notice that the servers were down.

Disregard.  Problem is fixed.

Well I wanted to share a stage I made with you guys, but I can't? I can't find an ID anywhere for my own stage, nor can I even see my "yeah"s, plays, or stats of any kind outside of the phone app. This whole thing is so half-baked. Why can't I copy and paste? Why can't I change the stage size or the background once I've started? Why can't I see more than a handful of stages at a time in the Shared Content section? How is anybody supposed to find my stage? Why can't I see stuff made by my Switch friends? Why can't I see the Mii Fighters I uploaded AT ALL, even in the phone app? BAH!

EDIT: Found some answers. They're dumb. You can find your own stages by searching, choosing "details", and scrolling right until you see "Creator", then you can select from options that include "friends" and "you".

Here's mine:

Why are Robin and Joker in Smash but Batman isnt? That's ridiculous.

Apparently there's a glitch with Joker that lets you have a massive camera zoom out and HOLY FUCK the detail that the devs put into these stages is ridiculous, especially since they could've gotten away with like, really good skyboxes or something.

I think it's amusing that both of the rumored characters ended up being right.

I'm a fan of both games, so I'm pretty psyched for both. Banjo and Kazooie in-particular. I've been rooting for them since they started pulling in other franchises. Their moveset in the games are perfectly tailored for Smash. I haven't even watched any gameplay with them besides the trailer and I can guess what every button does.

Isn't there literally a Switch bundle for Smash Ultimate?

Yeah, but it costs $200 more than buying a Switch and Smash Bros separately.

Is it just me, or does the Hero feel like what Robin could have been? He seems cool and fun, but definitely not my style of character, which is weird, because i like playing Robin.

I promptly went forward and beat the Spirit card quest for Dragon Quest and got

as the reward.

The last legendary spirit for the Dragon Quest Spirit card quest was tough but oh-so-fair (and much easier if you know how to contour your character to make beating the fighters in the game a cinch!)!

My main character is a Mii Swordfighter. I have several variations: Tommy Wiseau, Danny Devito, Bernie Sanders, and my own self, I. Curtain. I also have a Mii Brawler who looks like Strong Bad who I use as a backup. #3 is Captain Falcon, #4 is Kirby.

Toon Link/Ridley are my mains, with second Zelda and I'm not sure who else. Joker Probably.

So if we combine the SNK leak with the other leak that suggested it was a female character nobody was really amount for, I'm going to put my money on Nakoruru, who would be a lot of fun in Smash.

Banjo is the first character in the DLC pack that I feel attuned to. He suits my play style with the big caveat that I keep launching myself off cliffs with no way back. But that's what practice is for.

Same. He's got some good zoning tools, and Kazooie has such a big hitbox when she's out. I'm in the 5 million area with him on GSP, and that's my highest rated character by far.

I can't beat my Fox amiibo anymore. I gave him some spirits, and the Insta Drop ability. Imagine getting combo'd while you think you're safe because he's in special fall, and then he 0-Deaths you. This is legitimately the most broken thing I've ever seen in Smash.
