Title: Dracula Untold
Post by: Bob on September 28, 2014, 04:10:20 PM
Okay, the previews for this look pretty good and the story had not really been told before

Should I hope for a good one?

Really? I think they look like shit.

Also, according to IMDB it's by a first time director and first time writers. WTF?

I have to admit that while everything about it screams "Nope" to me, there's something in the back of my head that thinks it could be good. I see all the signs of a mediocre-at-best movie, but some part of me thinks I might like it.

Isn't that Bard from The Hobbit playing Doctor Acula?

Possibly worth mentioning that Bram Stoker only connected Dracula to Vlad Tepes somewhat after-the-fact:

BTW, do I have to wait until after it flops before I can make "Dracula Untold? More like 'Dracula Unseen,' amirite?" jokes?  :D

Has it opened yet?  At least make sure it doesnt make like 150 million on its opening weekend.

The really poor reviews will probably keep that from happening.

It's not quite a "Fuck you it's January" movie, but it's close. I think they bury the horror/supernatural movies in October (no pun intended) like they do with the rest of the garbage movies in January.

Since the Family Guy/Simpsons crossover, I find it very hard to show empathy for writers. What about when those writers do nothing but turn out shit for January movies? I think it's not so much down to talent as it is luck and having a really good agent.

It's not all about what the writers are able to turn out, it's what gets bought. I have a ton of empathy for writers in movies or tv, because I've heard enough to know how their work gets butchered and filtered.

Fair enough, but the sad part is whether it's their fault or not, it still leaves them with a bad reputation.

Not sure what I think about this:

Is Dracula Untold the Prologue to the Universal Monsters Universe?

I have heard that's what they want to do. It depends on how well this one does, I guess.

I suppose it will inevitably be the top grossing movie of the weekend... but during October that's a pretty easy task. If I made an October major release(regardless of quality), it would have a 1/4 chance of being the top grossing film.

I may have a chance to see this one fairly soon.  I'm not expecting much from it other than a handful of ill-placed laughs, so if it turns out well I'll be pleasantly surprised.  But I expect it will end up being on par with "Underworld" level myth-bashing.

At least one positive thing about it is that it's only and hour and a half long.

My review is up on the other site (It's at Cinemanerdz.com (http://www.cinemanerdz.com), if you're interested, but I'm not going to shameless plug any more than necessary).

Short version? Slightly on the high side of meh.

Nah.  If anything, quotes like that end up on the bootleg releases.

I'm just sick of movies being overly long these days. There's really very few stories that justify such extended run times. Most of them either feel stretched, or they pack in more than they need just to try to justify "epic".

As for this movie...sorry filmmakers, but the reason Dracula's origin is "untold" (it's actually been told different ways many times) is that we don't need it to be. In fact, making him mysterious is part of what makes him scary.

I am curious to see what Universal does with it's Mummy movie in 2016. I enjoyed the 1999 movie, for all it's cheesy fun. But even in that one, which was more Indiana Jones ripoff than horror movie, the Mummy was still the villain. If they actually decide to *gasp* make it more horror oriented this time, all the better.

It's actually kind of ironic that they want to do the MU style combined universe reboot thing with their horror icons now. Since The Wolfman in 2010 was done around when the MU movies were being successful and showing it can be done profitably. While that movie had issues, it wasn't really that bad. And would have made a good start for a horror icon series.

I actually liked this. I like the idea of a good king sacrificing his soul to save his people. And holy crap the Turkish King was a face punchingly great douche. Seeing him get his was satisfying.

I know that hating all movies is a badge of honor on this message board but this one was a fun romp.
