Title: RT Live!: Sharknado - Discussion
Post by: Trekker4747 on July 10, 2014, 07:17:40 PM
Great, great night and riff, guys.  I knew you could pull it off and prove wrong all those people complaining that you cannot riff a movie made to be intentionally bad.

You guys nailed it.

I new you guys would be utterly merciless towards Tara Reid and BOY! you do not pull punches on her.

Wow!

Great job, guys.

So, let us discuss!

(Near as I can tell no thread/subforum yet exists for discussing the Sharknado Live! event.

Well, THAT was fun.

I thought it started off really sluggish (I feel like it's not the first time I've said that, but it was ESPECIALLY the case here, I believe), and even the guys seemed to lack a bit of energy, but once the movie got going they really got into as well, and the crowd got into it. Good show.

I'm not sure I loved the clips from the coming Rifftrax show thing, though. I could do without that in future shows.

Although I did have a bit of a hard time hearing the movie. Maybe the movie itself just had lousy sound quality (a real possibility), or my theater screwed something up. I could hear the guys just fine, though. Anyone else experience that as well?

Great riffs.  The audience was roaring with laughter during much of the movie.  I agree with NRRork that it started off slow (although the alternating beach shots with mild to wild waves was hilarious).

Sound quality was fine at my theater.

I could have done without all the pimping of the next show. A Case of Spring Fever was nice.   Weren't we supposed to get the full version of the JOCO RiffTrax song ??

Yeah, I think things started off pretty slow with all of the plugs in it. I suspect the Sharknado 2 clip/plug they were obligated to do in order to riff this movie, but the first part (even the "Springs" short) seemed to lack energy.  Once Sharknado started things picked up quickly.

As for the sound, it didn't strike me as well mixed on my end either so it must've been something at the taping, seemed they were having sound issues in general considering the first Godzilla clip was muted.

I guess these are the things you run into when doing a live show.

The riffing of the feature itself was great and it looks like Godzilla (1998) will be fun too.

As for the non-fictional person named Gary and myself: We had a spiffing time.  Top hole!
It was great and we liked it very much.  Looking forward to Gojira!

I didn't notice any sound issues here in NH, except with the preshow stuff that was super loud in our theater.

I agree that the pre-movie stuff was kinda weak. I was also disappointed that we didn't get a new short. The movie was great, though!

Our feed was in and out during the short, but fortunately it stayed on for all but about two seconds of the movie. AWESOME riffing!

Yeah, I kind of wish the short was something different too, especially since "A Case of Spring Fever" re-riff was one of the Kickstarter rewards for Godzilla/Anaconda.

Oh from some of the emails and such it's been pretty clear that this is part of the promotion for Sharknado 2.

Not like they haven't done a huge number of other shorts recently. Could have held one back and no one would have noticed.

I admit it wasn't my favorite of their live efforts. I think I agree with the energy problems (lacking sound during the Goshzilla clips, and then a riff-less plug for Sharknado 2 didn't help), but I also think the film itself was deeply sub-mediocre, designed to fill 90 minutes of digital celluloid as inexpensively as possible. It lacked the "flawed but interesting" flavor of Starship Troopers, the "laughable message" of Reefer Madness, or even the "visions of artistic grandeur that just don't manifest" of Plan 9 or Birdemic. The film was serviceable in its plot, storyline, effects, and acting -- neither good enough to be noteworthy or awfully terrible enough to be mockable. I'm not sure the riff-writers had much to hook onto; I'm trying to remember more than five riffs and I'm coming up short.

I'm happy to support them, and I'll probably be at Goshzilla (presuming GenCon doesn't interfere too much), but -- for me -- this wasn't the riotous good time I had at Starship Troopers.

It was a good time. Enjoyed it immensely. The movie was worse than I imagined, Coily's return was fun.

The only problem I had was that the crowd seemed to be dead during Spring Fever (couldn't help but have MST3k flashbacks).

Oh, and reportedly Trace was spotted in the crowd (via an attendant on Satellite News). Sooner or later, they've gotta rope him into one of these shows... right?

Erik could tell you I've been harassing him for years to get Trace on-board if for only so they could a commentary for MST3K The Movie.

I was a little surprised that the cut we saw tonight was clearly a different cut than the one floating around the internet. A bit longer, a lot more gore.

I couldn't figure out if the sound problems were just with the movie (which has bad sound mixing) or with what was going on in the studio of the live show. Things seemed to get better about 20 minutes into the movie, but that was a very soft movie.

In my theater you could barely hear the riffing. Something must've went seriously wrong in the sound mix somewhere. But we did get free tickets to the next live show so it wasn't so bad.

We could hear the riffing but had trouble with the movie. Clearly at some point the movie theater turned up the audio, because when it started out we could barely hear anything.

Yeah, we had similar issues.

There were also a few times when people were laughing so hard at the movie itself that you couldn't hear the riffs.

Okay, I gotta gripe.

On the pre-show slides, on the "Here are the musical performers" slide, down at the bottom was the line"please support these artist."

Plural, guys. Use the plural.

No sounds issues in my theater except the obvious Godzilla one.

Awesome  riff! Lot of funny lines, all well delivered. I even loved the visual gag of their confusion when the foreign dude was talking at the beginning.

They were definitely sluggish to start and Mike seemed especially out of it. Like, to the point I wondered what was wrong. He's one of my favorite people ever so I won't speculate but I was worried. Then things picked up and the rest of the show went pretty much flawless and I forgot about it.

At any rate awesome event! Well worth the money.

Mike seemed fine to me, but where was his ring? That was kind of freaky. (If that's too personal a remark, I apologize. It was just weird. We're so used to that ring, it was almost like seeing him walk out without his pants.)

Speaking of male jewelry, pretty funny to hear an earring joke coming from Kevin!

It was really odd when after the first Godzilla clip they were all standing there shuffling their papers and I was thinking, "Uh... guys? You're on..."  Then they started riffing the second Godzilla clip.  Seems like the guys in the production booth really didn't have much of a clue as to what was going on.

Mike seemed a touch out of it a first, maybe, not too terribly. Maybe he had a few drinks of J&B Scotch before coming out on stage.

I also really liked the new riff of Spring Fever. It was always my favorite MST3K short along with Gumby's Robot Rumpus. But this was a lateral move. I did miss a few of the old riffs. Like "Welcome to Divot Hills" and especially "Guns, huh?"

It's a shame this won't be released as a VOD, as this was one great and hilarious live event. Our theater was about 2/3 filled.
The sound was an issue at times, especially during louder "action" scenes. There wasn't enough audio ducking, causing the guys' commentary to get lost in the noise. There were also times the movie was so loud that the guys could barely be heard.

Hopefully we'll see a MP3 of this one with the same lines and energy as we saw last night.

With more and more of the live shows being bigger budget "Never going to be out on VOD" shows, I would LOVE if they offered an mp3 version of the live show.  (Just the riffers & crowd mics, not the movie audio.)  I would gladly pay an extra buck for it over a studio version.

Do you know which songs?

When I realized that I was actually going to care about the music, I tried making notes as best I could.

Here's what I got:

Weird Al -- "White and Nerdy"
The Arrogant Worms -- "Billy The Theme Park Shark"
Rifftones -- "When a Man Loves a Shark (Love Theme From Jaws)"
Jonathan Coulton -- "Furry Old Lobster (Live Version)"
Weird Al -- "Nature Trail to Hell in 3-D"

I don't know what Doubleclicks song they did ("Coming Home to You"?), and I didn't catch the Marian Call or Paul and Storm songs.

I felt like this one was a little rough, and it was entirely because of the movie. Sharknado didn't take itself seriously enough to be a truly bad movie, and wasn't self-aware enough to be a good-bad-movie. I think Godzilla will be a lot better, and it'll probably be for the best if 'supposed to be be bad on purpose' movies are avoided going forward since they never hit their mark (like many 'supposed to be good' movies, which end up great for riffing).

Augh, I didn't realize there was going to be no VOD of this! Well, if they release a studio version, I guess I'll have to buy it. A buddy of mine went with me, and he had never seen a RTL before. We had an absolute blast; ended up hanging out after and watching some of the old shorts.
We have been darn lucky so far to never experience audio or sound issues as far as I can tell in any of the RTL events. Thought it was great. Laughed long and hard at most of the jokes. The film was completely incomprehensible; what a narrative mess.

They did a full list during the credits, so if you attend the rebroadcast, you'll see all the songs used. And the Doubleclicks' song was "Can't You See the World is Ending? (http://thedoubleclicks.bandcamp.com/track/cant-you-see-the-world-is-ending)"

(Post encore note) The Marian Call song was "Shark Week" (https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCIQyCkwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DLkjYZ6P45KU%26feature%3Dkp&ei=EybGU9uWB8OnyASRwoHoCg&usg=AFQjCNF8IIM6BOyPLu-qR0aLJ_pTiWVAsw&sig2=UwBQzUZ6hHUOV5hX_GkiFA&bvm=bv.71126742,d.aWw)   Didn't catch the Paul and Storm song.

Well, the riffing towards the movie wasn't entirely "this movie is painful" antagonistic. It seemed more like they were just making fun of the movie like you and your buddies might do sitting down to watch this.  Just plain making fun of it, they didn't delve (too much) into the poor acting or effects they just made fun of it the same way any group of people would sitting down and watching this at home.

I'd agree with that comment...but a theater of people laughing solidly for 2 hours sort of defeats it. There wasn't one face not smiling after the show that I saw.

I didn't see it, and probably won't see the encore. I may get the MP3 version someday if I get a promo code so I don't actually spend any money on it... but really all I'd want to see in the live show is the short and Trace and/or Beez if they focused on them at all in the audience.  I'm sure it was fun, but whatever.

"The Man With The Yellow Hat" Slide got a huge reception at my theatre. Spring fever was a fun revisit as it was one of my favorite shorts from MST3K.  The Godzilla and Sharknado 2 previews were pretty... Meh. It was an expiriment, but I think they'd be better off doing another short, or maybe another musical guest or something. But,  I had a great time watching them riff Sharknado. Started kinda slow, but by the end the whole crowd was in stitches.  I had tried watching the movie once before but I was unable to get through the stupidity.  The Rifftrax crew made it a real joy to watch.

Our theater was like 90% full. Our group of friends who goes to these is growing too (like 10 people now), so that was great. Only sound issues were that it was a bit too loud in the beginning. And as much as everyone has said about the slow beginning, I'd like to mention that the final act of the movie had our audience dying with laughter, a huge reason being the ridiculousness of the movie itself but also the excellent riffing. Just about all the slides got great reactions tho my favorite (the Edgar Wright one) was sadly not as well received as most. Not a lot of Marvel fans perhaps? Anyway, great job, guys! See ya in August!!

Mike seemed fine to me, but where was his ring? That was kind of freaky. (If that's too personal a remark, I apologize. It was just weird. We're so used to that ring, it was almost like seeing him walk out without his pants.)
I actually came here to ask this very question (my wife & I both having Claddagh rings). Erik posted a pic from the night before the show with Mike & Bridget together (Mike's ring still missing), so that's a good sign, I suppose. I, too, hope this isn't getting too personal. FWIW, this comes from a place of genuine concern.

Maybe his finger swells up in summer like mine does?

I actually bought an inexpensive wedding ring so I could get 2 sizes for this exact reason. A summer ring and a winter ring.

Got my ticket.  We missed the live show since Erica was working and we wanted to see if she could make it tonight instead.  She can't, working again, but I just can't stay away.  If its good, hopefully there will be another encore in the future, or maybe a vod release.

With more and more of the live shows being bigger budget "Never going to be out on VOD" shows, I would LOVE if they offered an mp3 version of the live show.  (Just the riffers & crowd mics, not the movie audio.)  I would gladly pay an extra buck for it over a studio version.

I wonder if this would be possible?
1) This shouldn't violate film rights, correct? Unless they stipulated something in the contract they signed to not offer the performance in any audio or video form.
2) There were no pauses during the film, so we should be able to sync it with the Sharknado DVD or BD without too much difficulty

It might be a challenge to get a clean audio track without any movie audio bleeding through their mics.

True. It would depend on the positioning of the theaters speakers or any monitors they had.  But I'll settle for a slightly less than clean audio track to get the live version.  Wouldn't have been as bad for this one as it was for Starship Troopers where the mix was bad & everything was so freaking loud.

I received a "I survived Sharknado" T-shirt in the mail yesterday.  My sister in Nashville bought it somewhere.   I am thinking of wearing it to next month's meet and greet in Nashville.   On the other hand, it's a Sharknado T-shirt.  Do I want to wear it anywhere?

Probably not. When they were still negotiating with Summit over Twilight last year, that was a pretty popular suggestion once it was announced that there wouldn't be a VOD. Turns out something like that does fall under film/performance rights. I would assume that Sony and The Asylum are no different.

I think sound from the movie would inevitably be in the mix from the live show. I doubt they could separate it out completely. They'd have to do a studio recording for an MP3.

Weren't we supposed to get the debut of the full RiffTrax song with this live show??

I took my mom to the encore showing of this, this being our fourth Rifftrax Live (the others being Plan 9, the Holiday shorts, and Manos, but we're going to the premiere of the Godzilla Riff). The film just...why does it keep going from pouring rain to sunny skies in seconds?  ???

Also, regarding that Spring Fever short, when the guy was babbling about springs for the last five minutes, mom whispered "Oh, shut up."  :D

I'm not sure if discontinuity of the skies was an "intentional" part the movie makers did to go along with the "playing to genre" thing they supposedly did or if it was just what happened due to their Give a Damn not being very high.

And, yeah, that Spring Fever short is odd.  Were there really people around in the 1940s complaining about springs (propping their couch up on blocks like a Buick to fix it) and needed to be convinced that springs were a good thing that society needed?  Did people really need to be informed on how a spring worked and why they were so important?  I don't think I've ever regarded a spring in my whole life.

What were the digital goodies?  I typed what I thought Mike said to type, and all I see are three versions of the same clip, from shark attack 3.  Nothing else. Am  I missing anything?

Ouch, I missed the theme song.  It expired July 25 and I just did not see it.
I snooze-I loose.

That's what I got when I typed in what I thought was the code.  Guess I'm missing something too.

As for the first part, I'm betting their Give a Dan was pretty low.  As for  the spring issues you mention, yes, they existed.  But, they didn't make the news often, because you couldn't swing a broken couch without hitting an exploding housewife (use of gasoline to clean clothes and all.)  Oh. if only they knew of steam, that mortal enemy of fire...

I looked at the kickstarter rewards page.  Sharknado mp3 isn't listed as a reward.  There were 2 rewards related to sharknado mentioned in the Godzilla/anaconda kickstater: a chance to see Sharknado on the first row in Minneapolis, and a sharknado poster signed by the guys.  But, no Sharknado mp3 rewards.  Sharknado was not part of the kickstarter project...only Godzilla and Anaconda were part of it.

So, Sharknado mp3 should have a release independent of Anaconda and Godzilla.  However, my mind goes back to something I read/heard somewhere, that due to the contract with Fathom, they have to wait about 6 months to release a VOD/mp3 after its showing.  So, it's about time to be released, anyway.

This is one of those things that Torgo's pizza, Tv's Torso or perhaps showerstall Bathtub or  Thrashalla might be able to clear up for us.  Hint, hint.

I hope your pizza arrives soon, and isn't cold.  That would suck. :(

They did the live show back in July so if that's the case, 6 months would put a release in January :scared:
I may contact Torgo's Pizza on Monday about this one, but I'm curious to see what they release next month :o

Since there are no plans to release the live event, I'd wish they'd consider releasing a MP3 commentary track. This was a laugh riot from start to finish.

I'd be surprised if there wasn't.

*sigh* Laugnado? Really?

*sigh*  yesh.   if you are sighing at my pun, fine.  But, if you are sighing because you didn't like the Rifftrax Live of Sharknado, I disagree.  It was hilarious.

All I've read in the forum is no plans at this time for a Sharknado release

Is Sharknado even available on DVD?

Also available on netflix as a stream.

Nothing on the schedule yet but that doesn't mean no. With Asylum involved as well as Fathom, that's another voice in the planning for any releases (even our own studio MP3)...but I, and this is not the official word, would expect something within the first half of 2015.

If something like this goes for a while without anyone from RiffTrax commenting on it, odds are things are still in the works and we don't want to give out info that is purely speculative. Which is also why we sound like we're remixing the same information when we talk about stuff, like this, that is still in the works.

To me that sounds like they're trying to get VOD rights which would be great!  :) Although that'd suck that I dropped cash on the Blu-Ray in anticipation of the riff coming out.

I'd assume if it was just the studio MP3 you'd be good to go (unless it's a gesture of good will to Asylum to get their permission kinda like Weird Al does with parody songs).

Since there are no plans to release the live event, I'd wish they'd consider releasing a MP3 commentary track. This was a laugh riot from start to finish.

Have you heard there is NOT going to be a MP3?  I haven't heard anything, either way.  I agree with you, I'd love a MP3 of Sharknado.  It was laughnado!

All I've read in the forum is no plans at this time for a Sharknado release
BLASPHEMY! Theres no reason not to... that would just be ridiculous. Id rather them push back an VOD and do Sharknado. I only got to see it once, do they really want it to fade into obscurity like the lost MST3K episodes???

My entire family went to see this, which is the second time we've all gone to see a Rifftrax Live (first was a showing of Plan 9 they did at the San Diego Comic Con). I told my dad this was coming out and his response was to walk away muttering to himself. Rifftrax has successfully broken my dad for a third time.

On that topic, the whole family also went to the Godzilla and Santa Claus shows too. My little brother and I only went to Anaconda, my dad didn't want to go, and my mom is afraid of snakes.

I'm hoping to keep this alive this summer.
