Title: Pacific Rim: Uprising (2018)

Guillermo del Toro working on 'Pacific Rim 2' script

et ready for giant monsters vs. colossal robots, Round 2: Writer-director Guillermo del Toro is working on a script for a sequel to his 2013 sci-fi film "Pacific Rim.".

"I'm working very, very hard with Zak Penn," Del Toro told BuzzFeed at the Austin Television Festival over the weekend. "We've been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around."

by Steven Zeitchik

Del Toro added that finance and production company Legendary Pictures has not formally agreed to make the film, but that he and Penn ("X-Men: The Last Stand," "The Incredible Hulk") are writing the script as if it will see the light.

"I don't have the money, but I'm proceeding like it is happening," Del Toro said, adding that he hopes to make "Pacific Rim 2" after his next producing project.

Released last July, the original "Pacific Rim" tells the story of a future in which giant monsters called kaiju have emerged from an undersea portal and begun laying waste to coastal cities. To fight back, the military creates 25-story robots operated by two pilots who control the machine via a psychic bond.

The $190-million film did only moderate business in the U.S., where it just crossed the $100 million mark, but it earned positive reviews and also flourished overseas, taking in an additional $309 million.

Back in April, discussing the possibility of a sequel, Legendary principal Thomas Tull told The Times, "We love ['Pacific Rim'] and we love working with Guillermo del Toro. We would continue working on it, but we wouldn't do it just to do it."

Del Toro said the sequel script picks up where the first movie left off and includes the characters Raleigh Becket (Charlie Hunnam) and Mako Mori (Rinko Kikuchi).

"Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel," Del Toro said. "I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion. I'm going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle."

The first one was entertaining.  Not great though, might wait for the sequel to come to blu ray, if it gets made this time.

I think the biggest thing against the first one was name recognition. It's sad, but we live in a world where most movies are rehashes or adaptations of recognizable properties. For all the goofy simplicity of "giant robots fighting giant monsters", the general public doesn't seem to know what to make of something anymore if they don't recognize the name. But this means the sequel may actually do better business.
Personally, I'd like to see Guillermo go back to doing smaller more personal movie between his big budget blockbusters.

I think it was that it was a pretty dumb movie.
Yeah, but pretty dumb movies have made LOTS of money. What's the difference between this, Transformers, and Godzilla? Name recognition.
And even without a recognizable name, there's the fact it's title didn't really make any sense as a title. It'd be like calling Monster's Inc. "Doors".

He should be called South African too.

AGREED!

Well, except for the Frankenstein movie. Not that he couldn't do a good job with it, but we don't really need yet another adaptation.

Charlie Hunnam steps out in character on the set of his series Sons of Anarchy on Monday afternoon (June 16) in Los Angeles.

The 34-year-old actor starred in the movie Pacific Rim and now director Guillermo del Toro is telling Buzzfeed about his plans for the sequel.

“I’m working very, very hard with [screenwriter] Zak Penn,” Guillermo said. “We’ve been working for a few months now in secret. We found a way to twist it around. Travis Beacham [co-writer of the first film, now working on Fox’s Hieroglyph] was involved in the storyline and now I’m writing with Zak because Travis has become a TV mogul.”

“Some people were wondering if we were going to do the prequel. I was never interested in doing that first wave of invasion,” he added. “I’m going for very new, very crazy ideas on the second one, which are very different from the first one — but you will get really great spectacle.”

Looks like WB gave distribution rights to Universal, as GDT just posted a video message with future franchise plans (more comics, animated series) and a sequel release date:

Pacific Rim 2 is officially a “go”.  Though director Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 “monsters vs. robots” film was in no way a box office disaster, the colorful, bombastic epic failed to catch on with general audiences in Transformers fashion.  It just squeaked past the $100 million mark stateside, but fared much better internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $411 million.  Fans (myself included) hoped this would be enough to convince Legendary Pictures to greenlight a sequel, and we’ve been hearing more updates on the follow-up in the past few months.
Most recently, del Toro revealed that he’s writing the Pacific Rim 2 script with Zak Penn (X2), and now the filmmaker has announced that the pic will hit theaters on April 7, 2017 in IMAX 3D.  Moreover, he revealed that an animated series set within the Pacific Rim world will be unveiled sometime before that date.  More after the jump.

So I guess it's really happening. Thanks China!

WB's already lost interest - they gave up distribution to Universal. But that's because PR's production company, Legendary Pictures, left WB for Universal last summer and WB got rid of all their Legendary projects.

Universal, it seems, is all in on the GDT/Legendary business.

If Crimson Peak (GDT's next, out in October 2015) and Pacific Rim 2: More Kaiju are hits, it's not too far-fetched to imagine GDT being given the reins of the Universal Monsters.

That's a pretty big if, though. At least in terms of them being hits, which is something GDT movies always struggle with. Luckily there are still other ways to get clout, even if he'll have to struggle for every bit of it.

Right. He's won Oscars (cache), and played nice with the studios (so he'll listen), which means there are still people interested in doing business with him. I mean, the only reason there's still a Pacific Rim franchise to consider is because the head of Legendary is a huge geek to begin with and loves GDT. Someone who's more bottom line-orientated would've weighed the cost/return ratio and politely told GDT to concentrate on less expensive comics and cartoons.

Same deal as Pacific Rim: mediocre North American grosses, solid to successful worldwide.

It's probably going to happen more often as the importance of worldwide box office grows.

Exclusive: Guillermo del Toro Says He’s Shooting a Small, Black and White Film Before PACIFIC RIM 2; John Hurt May Star (http://collider.com/guillermo-del-toro-black-and-white-movie/)
Quote from: Adam Chitwood
While del Toro is planning on starting pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 later this year, he told us that he’s actually scheduled a brief hiatus in which he will shoot a much smaller movie:
Quote
“Right away, in February/March I should [start on] another very small movie, black and white, really, really bizarre before starting—we start pre-production on Pacific Rim 2 in August, and then I interrupt it briefly to go into the first of next year to do this strange little movie, and then I restart it and go all the way until we start shooting Pacific Rim 2 at the end of 2015 for release in 2017.”
Del Toro was reluctant to reveal too much about the project, but he did say he already has cast in mind:
Quote
“It’s a very small cast.  I would love to have John Hurt, and there’s an actress that I have in mind that is not well-known but I’ve seen her in a short film.  That’s all she’s really done, one feature and one short, but she has an incredibly interesting taste and I’m gonna try her out for the main role.”
When asked whether or not this new film fits into his previous filmography, he offered this brief, tantalizing tease:
Quote
“There’s one great creature in it.”
Del Toro confirmed that the project does have a title, but he’d rather the finished film speak for itself instead of divulging too much beforehand:
Quote
“It does [have a title], but I find—I’d rather do the projects and then show them to people than talk about them.  I think that it’s going to be a nice thing for people to know which one is it and where it came from when it’s a reality.”

With regards to Pacific Rim 2, Del Toro reiterated how the sequel will be a different experience, and expanded to say:
Quote
“some of your favorite characters come back, some others don’t because we have decided that we’re going to shoot ambitiously and say ‘Let’s hope we have three movies,’ so some characters come in at the end of the second, hoping that it will ramp up on the third one.”

More giant monster movies is always good. But I kind of wish Guillermo will direct another movie between PR2 and 3.
Frankly, I'm really hoping that Pacific Rim 2 is a mega hit. One of the major things that hurt the first one, I think, is that it wasn't an established franchise name (and the name was poorly chosen, lets be honest). Now it is.

I actually enjoyed this quite a bit, as well as the new Godzilla, aside from (no maybe because of) the general goofiness of both. It's like with modern graphics you can finally see what they were trying to get at back when it was guys in rubber suits stomping on train sets, and honestly it looks pretty awesome. Before I saw it I read an interview with GDT talking about it and how he grew up obsessed with the old Japanese monster movies in cheap Mexican theaters, so it was kinda charming to get that perspective on it. I also liked how he took up these really well-worn tropes but also took it in a somewhat novel direction with all the apocalyptic, Lovecrafty stuff, the obsession with alien biology, etc. A nice counterpoint to JJ Abrams' bold but not very enjoyable attempt to reinvent the monster movie.

The first pacific rim didn't bomb. It didn't do well in the US, but overseas it made a ton. That's why Hollywood has been courting Asia lately. There are a lot of butts there to which one can sell seats. And that's why Transformers 4, and that's why Transformers 5 and 6....

190 million budget, 411 million worldwide box office. 221 million profit might not be a ton by Hollywood standards, but it seems pretty profitable to me.

It almost made as much worldwide as Tim Burton's Batman.

Well, its not 221 million in profit.  There are marketing costs, which could be upwards of 75 million.  Not to mention not all of the gross goes to the studio, and they get a smaller percentage from the foreign market.

Universal's Monster Movies Get Delayed (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/universals-monster-movies-get-delayed-791137)
Guillermo del Toro's 'Pacific Rim 2' also is being pushed back, while the studio gives a winter berth to Tom Cruise drama 'Mena.
Quote from: Borys Kit & Pamela McClintock
The Mummy, the movie that was meant to kick off Universal’s new monster universe, has been pushed back from June 24, 2016 to March 24, 2017.

The move has created a ripple effect, as the studio's second monster movie, an untitled project, was to have opened April 21, 2017, but now is slotted for March 30, 2018.

Among other changes announced following the presentation: Universal also is pushing back Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim 2 from April 7, 2017, to August 4 of that year, while Warcraft has been moved from March 11, 2016, to June 10, 2016.

Universal already had a type of monster movie slated to open in March 2017: its launch of a King Kong franchise. Kong: Skull Island is due out March 10, 2017. Already opening on March 17, 2017, is Disney’s live-action Beauty and the Beast.

Darn it!

Oh, well. At least it gives King Kong time to breath without another giant monster film opening one month after. And it means kaiju will effectively bookend summer '17.

‘Pacific Rim 2’: Guillermo del Toro Wants ‘Game of Thrones’ Actress for Sequel (http://collider.com/pacific-rim-2-maisie-williams-wanted-for-sequel-guillermo-del-toro/)

Guillermo del Toro on Crimson Peak, Pacific Rim 2 and more (http://www.blastr.com/2015-10-15/guillermo-del-toro-crimson-peak-pacific-rim-2-and-more)
Quote from: Don Kaye
Let’s address this Pacific Rim 2 situation.

The movie needed to move -- they decided to move it because we wanted to present our final draft of the script and our final approach to the budget, which needs to hit a number to make the movie financially smart. And I needed to find a way to make the movie bigger than the first one for less money than the first one. So we did a lot of R&D and learned a lot of tricks and what works and what doesn’t on the first one. We are applying all that. And then we'll turn in a new screenplay, a new budget, and then they’ll decide.

I’ll probably do another movie in the meantime between this and Pacific Rim, a small movie that I want to do. But Pacific Rim is not yet dead. It may be. Deciding that is out of my hands. But so far, no.
Guillermo Del Toro Q&A: On What Haunts Him ... And Trump (http://deadline.com/2015/10/crimson-peak-guillermo-del-toro-donald-trump-mexican-immigrants-1201585629/)
Quote from: Mike Fleming Jr
DEADLINE: You shuttered your Pacific Rim 2 production offices with a promise to keep developing. Second installments are often pricier, but you’ve told me the sequel will be less expensive. How much so?
DEL TORO:
I can safely think we will be almost a quarter down, 20 to 25 percent lower than the first movie because of a very unique pipeline we established with ILM on the first movie. We learned a lot. Not much was made about the incredibly linear and lean way we handled the effects with ILM’s John Knoll, who stuck his neck out for us. We proved the model we created could work, that you could make a movie in that scope and not end up $20 million over budget on VFX. Now we are capable of implementing that model in a more extreme way. It was a big learning curve to do that movie and now we can apply it. As for when that happens, that is entirely above my pay grade. I delivered the budget and we are waiting for Jon Spaihts to deliver the new draft that we did together. Then they will decide if they greenlight it or not.

Quote from: Kellvin Chavez
What is it that you're going to do next after this and would you do another Spanish film?

Guillermo del Toro:
I'm going to probably ... Pacific Rim is going to push at least seven months. I have time to do another little movie in between, and I'm going to probably take the advantage and do it. Then if everything goes well and they green light Pacific Rim I'll do it. It's three weeks from now we're turning in the budget and the script, and then the studio needs to decide if they want to do it or not.

EXCLUSIVE: Legendary Pictures has set Steven S. DeKnight to direct Pacific Rim 2, the follow-up to Guillermo del Toro and Travis Beacham’s epic 2013 action-adventure film. The current script was written by Jon Spaihts based on characters created by Beacham and del Toro. Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, del Toro and Mary Parent are producing and Jillian Share will be executive producer. Universal Pictures will release the film worldwide in 3D. Del Toro’s 2013 film grossed $411 million worldwide. About 75 percent of that came from overseas, and it was a big hit in China, where it was worth $111 million.

Pacific Rim 2 marks DeKnight’s feature directorial debut. He most recently served as executive producer and head writer of Marvel’s Daredevil for Netflix. DeKnight created the international hit series Spartacus for Starz and has written, directed and produced on such television series as Joss Whedon’s Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Angel and Dollhouse, as well as Smallville.

Spaihts recently scripted Prometheus with Damon Lindelof. Both DeKnight and Spaihts are repped by CAA, and the scribe is managed by Circle of Confusion. It’s another big-scale film on the Legendary slate, which has Warcraft opening June 10 and The Great Wall bowing February 17, 2017.

China's Wanda to Announce "Major Deal" This Week, Says Chairman Wang (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/chinas-wanda-announce-major-deal-869044)
The billionaire business leader's remarks have sparked speculation that Wanda could be the minority buyer of Paramount Viacom is courting.
Quote from:  Patrick Brzeski
In January, Wanda finalized its acquisition of Thomas Tull's Legendary Entertainment. The deal marked the first time that a movie studio capable of producing big-budget global blockbusters — Legendary has been involved in such hits as Godzilla, Inception, Jurassic World and Pacific Rim — has come under Chinese ownership. At its year-end meeting, Wanda said it plans to make five major acquisitions in 2016, at least three of which will be outside China.

Wang, one of China's richest individuals with an estimated fortune of $32.7 billion, has expressed interest in buying a major Hollywood studio on numerous occasions in the past. He previously held discussions with both Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Lionsgate, but neither of the negotiations came to fruition.

The Force Awakens and Attack the Block star John Boyega will lead the cast of Pacific Rim 2.

Boyega will be playing the lead role, currently unnamed but definitely the son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s character from the first film.

I hope it's better than the first. Idris Elba was the best part about the original, imho.

I do wish that in the Sharknado riff, when Ziering has cut himself out of the shark's belly that they had riffed "Where's my god damn SHOE?!"

Minor quibble, though. I am REALLY looking forward to the sequel.
