Title: Rick and Morty
Post by: lassieface on April 08, 2014, 08:38:29 PM
This is a new animated show from Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland. Episodes can be watched for free on the Adult Swim website.

Anyways, I'm pretty hooked. It's got references out the wazoo, plenty of gross-out humor, and heart (it's Harmon after all).

Anybody else watching?

LOVE this show. It's filled the animated-sci-fi-comedy gap that Futurama left behind.

A coworker convinced me to try it a few weeks ago and I was instantly hooked once I caught the "Cronenberg" world.

Binge-watched the entire season after work today. Was hooked pretty much straight away, although I made the mistake of watching the first episode at the gym. When they got to the part where Rick was asking Morty to smuggle the seeds through customs, it probably looked like I was having an asthma attack on the exercise bike.

I think Pak nailed it. This show has all the totally outlandish (yet bizarrely consistent) sci-fi humor of Futurama*, and also a surprising amount of heart. Loved the bit in the last episode where Rick actually discovered he likes Morty (kinda sorta mostly). Plus the multi-episode bit of the parents wondering if they're actually right for each other. It's a solid show to do subtle stories over the course of the season, and definitely makes sense that Harmon is a main player in this. Can't wait for the finale on Monday. I just hope I get back from work in time to watch it.

*although this show gets way darker (King Jellybean anyone?)

I avoided the leaks and finally got to the premier this morning. Loved every minute of it, it's like the show never left. A suitably jacked-up sci-fi plot with crazy humor and more than a little heart squeezed in. Plus, Jerry got a win for once! He was long overdue for that.

That was darned impressive. That they pulled off what they pulled off and still told a completely coherent story is darned impressive. And it was funny, of course. That always helps.

Honestly, it's my favorite thing on TV right now. If there was a hole left in your heart by Futurama, and you can stand a little bit of raunchiness, Rick and Morty fills it up nicely.

The Jerry day-care center was inspired (and he's right, the factory tint setting *is* always set wrong!). Really like how they're fleshing him out more and more, even if it's just to say that some things about him will forever remain completely constant.

The Jerry swap at the end was perfect. I hope this show never stops playing super fast and loose with how it treats parallel universes.

Summer in the car in this last episode isn't quite the darkest thing this show's done, but that's Top 5, easy.

This show just keeps ramping it all up and I love it.

There are a lot of great facial expressions in this episode that knock it out of the park. Morty's face when he's flipping everyone off, Summer's face when she lets out that strained, "Uh huh!" Morty-Car's range of emotions...
Title: Re: Rick and Morty

I love how much Morty has developed over the course of the two seasons. Back at the start of the show that probably would've been him in the car (or some similar situation) with the same reaction. Now he can spend months in a micro-micro-microverse and get all worked up over being stuck with a primitive tribe that he also manages to lead. His exit from them and what he says once they grow in size is beautiful.

And yes, Summer's "Uh-huh!" when they get back in the car is perfect. Love how traumatized she got over everything.

Anyone else like Rick and Morty?  I thought at first I would hate it because Rick urping all the time with vomit hanging off his mouth drives me nuts and I don't care for the animation, but after several episodes I have a new respect for the writing.  It DOES have "meh" episodes but it has several "holy crap" type episodes that I really like, like "Total Rickall."  Anyways, if you haven't seen it, there are a few episodes (including Total Rickall) that you can watch (with annoying ads) for free on Adult Swim.

Well, the good news (for you) is you still have a fair bit of time to watch them. They did a good news / bad news sort of thing yesterday. They streamed the season premiere (wasn't an April Fool's Joke, they did that to mess with us), but then said the rest of the season wouldn't come until this summer.

It's an Adult Swim show, not sure if they stream to the Adult Swim site, but it is on Hulu.

There is some toilet humor, but it's wrapped in a package of surprisingly intellegent and dark (holy crap is it dark) humor.

That story is from 2014, but still, fuck that guy.  I have zero pity for producers who complain about 'not being given enough time' when they've been fucking over their crew for months. Production will bleed you dry if you let them. The only way to stop it is to band together and stand up as a group.

Honestly I've been really let down by this season. The premiere was so promising, I thought "Man, they haven't lost a step." I watched it over and over again and loved it. Then the next one was okay, it picked up steam after awhile. Then I really liked Pickle Rick, so I thought okay, the previous week was just sort of a misstep, they're still in top form.

Then the rest of the season came. For whatever reason, I'm just not laughing like I once did. I'm getting a couple little chuckles at best. I appreciate the stories they're trying to tell, they're doing some cool and interesting things, but I'm still not laughing. I don't know if they're focusing too much on trying to be all deep and clever and forgetting to be funny, or if the humor has lost its impact, or what, but it's still a real problem for me because this had become the new Simpsons for me. The first two seasons were as good as the Simpsons was in its prime, a feat NO other show has managed, at least to me.

Or maybe the long delay caused expectations to rise too high. The longer you make your audience wait, the more they hype it up in their heads. And their explanations for the delay being "We're PERFECTIONISTS and it's slowing things down." just made expectations even higher.

Okay, I'll agree, I wasn't a huge fan of the "Roadwarrior" episode, or the "Avengers" episode. OTOH, the "Toxic" episode, and the Rick and Jerry episode were great. And Morty's Mind Blowers was WAY better than another Interdimensional Cable.

However, "Tales from the Citadel" was easily the best episode of the season so far, if not the entire series.

That had me confused.  I thought they specifically said season 3 was taking longer because they had a larger episode order than before.

I don't like this amateurish shit.  It takes 2 years to produce 10 episodes?  The Simpsons has been churning out full 22 episode seasons every year for almost 30 years.  I'd be fine with 10 episode seasons if it didn't take such an ungodly long time.  Get these guys some real money and a bigger staff!

Always too soon.

The long wait was always cited as being creativity-related. Harmon is a noted perfectionist and wanted to be sure this season was the best it could be, and that took time. That seems like the right reason to wait a really long time for a small taste of really good programming to me. Of course I say that as a fan of Venture Bros, which has had 6 seasons in the 14 years it's been around. (Season 7 in 2018! Woo!)

I like that they didn't end on some cliffhanger that they're going to take forever to resolve.  I also like that Jerry and Beth reconciled their marriage.  I was rooting for Jerry.  He's such a lovable loser.

Dan Harmon and Justin Roiland are kind of like web comic creators.  They made something really popular that they update when they feel like it.

If that gives a head start, I'm for it.

I really liked the finale and the last couple episodes. So, I'll say it was overall about a 50/50 for me. That's not a puss-out, golden medium kinda of thing, I really took a quick headcount and I liked five of them and thought the other five were so-so. But I'm grading a Rick and Morty curve, so a "so-so" is marked down harshly.

The whole season has been about his weakness: Being an all powerful sorcerer god sucks.

As encapsulated by one of my favorite lines in the season "You don't know what I am and you don't know what I can do! I'm Doctor Who in this motherfucker!"

McDonalds is bringing Szechwan Sauce back for a day this Saturday at select locations. You can go here to find out if your local McDonalds will be one of them.

https://buttermilkcrispytenders.com/
Wow I'm gonna have to drive 10 miles to the only McD's that's carrying it :o
And it will be available after 2pm (good thing I double checked) :o
Double checked again
Quote
Only the McDonald’s locations labeled "Szechuan Available" will be giving away Szechuan Sauce
And that one I found doesn't carry it.. Only one that does is on the north side of Charlotte 30+ miles away from me so I won't be going after all :-[

Hey, I once drove 330 miles each way into South Carolina to try a barbecue place that... in the end... sucked.  Okay I also drove there because I couldn't get that tourist trap on the NC/SC state line out of my head.  My point is, stop being an amateur and go the distance for mediocre novelty food!

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to drive 250 miles round trip to get a calzone in central Illinois.

I have no idea myself but the fact that this show gave McD's the opportunity to make Millions off this sauce and they not only dropped the ball but chunked it off a cliff makes this a huge deal to fans of the show in my opinion :o

No not really.  It was just a bit of a joke from Rick and Morty.  I'm sure you could get a whole bottle of something similar at any grocery store.

Having only 20 at the select stores seems outrageous. Also there were apparently some stores selling them for $50.

If something is in such high demand, a business should keep a fairly good supply of said product. But given that, people also shouldn't be rioting over Szechuan sauce. To be frank, there are few if any reasons for people to be rioting, but least of all over this!

I already checked my local stores and none of them carried it except Target but you could only order it online as it was not actually sold in the store..

I still say that counts though.  There is a brand of barbecue sauce I like that I can't exactly find on the shelves at grocery stores, but I can always make an online order and pick up at Walmart (with free shipping).

I'd have done the same if Target offered that as an option to ship free to their store but Nope!
Suddenly their brand doubled in price because of shipping costs to my home >:(

How bizarre.  My local Target has site-to-store.  Used it two months ago to get some low carb burrito shells that have erratic availability in stores.

I can understand being upset after waiting for hours and not getting this sauce.  What utterly baffles me is people lining up for hours in the first place.

I admit, when I first heard about the promotion I considered going. My wife and I even looked up the list of participating McDonald's in the area. When we realized that the closest one to us was over a half-hour drive away we skipped it.

At first we thought one down the street was participating, and we went as far as discussing how crowded it would have to be before we would just keep driving and get dinner somewhere else.

I guess my confusion doesn't come from people willing to wait in line for sauce, but for bothering to get angry at people who have no control over it. If you want to go home and blast McDonald's on Facebook or Twitter, I get it. You're probably taking things too seriously, but you did just waste your afternoon responding to a corporate promotion that jerked you around. If, however, you start screaming at the person running the register that only had 20 packets to give...then you become the asshole. Guess what, they don't make the sauce at the restaurant. They don't have the ingredients, no one there knows the recipe.

So far the asshole fans haven't made me enjoy the show any less. I'm kind of used to that, if asshole fans of a thing could ruin that thing for me I wouldn't still be watching wrestling. I just get better at finding the fans I can stand.

Well... after all that waiting people are bound to get irritable, and after being told it was all for nothing there's gonna be a lot of pent up rage.  I can forgive someone who acts rashly in that circumstance.  They probably feel bad about it later and hopefully return to offer an apology.
