Title: The Disaster Artist: A James Franco Film Based On A Greg Sestero Book

The book was absolutely fantastic, and I look forward to seeing it brought to film, even if I can't imagine anybody else adequately playing Tommy.

If you don't tell him the title or that it's insulting to him, you could probably convince Tommy to play himself.

Like a reverse-"Man on the Moon". Everybody ELSE is played by actors, but the lead plays himself.

Trouble is, I can't imagine Tommy taking direction well. And there are a lot of genuinely serious moments in the book that would definitely be lost.

According to the A.V. Club, Franco is going to be playing Tommy.

See, now this is a role that I think they should have a casting call for. Plenty of famous actors all doing their impressions of Tommy Wiseau. And then have their audition tapes be a special feature on the DVD.

That was speculation on their part. We know James is IN the movie, but we don't know for sure which role he'll play.

Quote from: The A.V. Club
there is no word yet on casting. Prediction: After a worldwide search for an actor that can believably portray total confidence, inestimable cluelessness, and vague foreignness, Franco will grudgingly settle on himself in the lead role.

Whoops.  That's what I get for skimming.  Although I do think Franco could pull off the look.

As the book so clearly points out, Tommy can't take his own direction. Period.

Also, I am pretty sure Tommy either hasn't read the book, or things from his past are "made up."

I like the idea of this, but I don't see it working well. The Room (original) and book combination are already so perfect as themselves. I doubt this movie will be made, personally.

But it's a cute idea.

Well, it's since been confirmed: James is playing Tommy, Dave is playing Sestero.

What other casting announcements are imminent? Seth Rogen as Sandy Schklair, perhaps?

No, this scene was part of the source material.

I just finished reading the book. I'm not questioning whether the scene exists in it. However, I don't think the entire crew recited his lines like that. The performances also seemed a bit wacky to me (Mark in particular). I know it's comedy, but it seemed more than just showing what happened realistically. That's funny enough, but in a more frustrating way.

I could be wrong, but that's the impression that I got. I'll be disappointed if they "goofy" it up.

Edit: I just realized that they may be going for an "Ed Wood" (the movie) vibe.

It looks like greg is going to be more actively involved in the creation of the film than the books suggests, plus it looks like it extends beyond the end of the book and includes the premiere of the film at least.

I just looked at the IMDB page (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt3521126/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1).  This thing has some real star power behind it.  It probably got several people who wanted to do the project just because it seemed fun, and maybe a lot of them are fans of The Room.

Lizzy Caplan, Kristen Bell, Adam Scott, Zach Braff, and Bryan Cranston play themselves.

Allison Brie plays someone named "Amber".  That name sounds familiar.  Who is that?

Greg's girlfriend for most of the Disaster Artist.

So when are we going to get a James Nguyen biopic. What, Ed Wood and Tommy Wiseau can't be the only story about underdog film makers who dreams of making big in hollywood dosn't match up with there actual skill as actors and directors. Just Saying. Oh and maybe Al Gore can have a cameo.

Isn't there also a new documentary about the guy who directed The Creeping Terror?

Movie has been out for two weeks.  Surprised nobody is talking about it.

I saw it last night with a friend.  We both loved The Room, so this was a real treat.  It was weird seeing other actors playing characters we recognized from The Room.  James Franco looked just like Tommy Wiseau, but everyone else looked like a crummy knockoff.  Still a great movie.  Funny in a lot of parts but it still evoked a lot of sympathy for Tommy in some areas.

Having read the book, I was a bit disappointed. That's to be expected, I suppose. In general, it's good but not great. On the "bright" side, we had the theater to ourselves.

Who would have thought that Tommy Wiseau would ever be on stage at a Golden Globes?

The film doesn't hold up well against the book, I highly recommend anyone who enjoyed the film but hasn't read it yet at least pick up the the Audiobook read by Greg himself, it's fantastic.

YEAH! I hate to be a "The Book Was Better Than the Movie" guy, but, it WAS! Buy A LOT! I didn't dislike the movie, but it really wasn't what I thought it would be. I don't think it's gonna be another Ed Wood for me.

One weird thing is I'm pretty sure I saw Tommy's Première dates in the Trailer, there's a scene with him with the 2 women on his arms, but they weren't in the film.

See, I never read the book, and I enjoyed the film.  It wasn't perfect, but I didn't have anything to be let down by.  I think the lesson we should all take away from this is: don't read books.  They just ruin movies.

I just bought the DVD of the movie.  It says here that Tommy Wiseau does audio commentary (along with Greg Sestero and the Franco brothers).
