Title: Name the BEST MST3Ked movie ever
Post by: Fuzzy Necromancer on March 23, 2007, 01:09:35 PM
This isn't a question of the best episode of MST3K, or a "so bad its good" movie. What movie shown on Mystery Science Theater 3000 was closest to being good on its own?

I could actually do Pod People on its own. It's like a darkly tragic ET... :^)

Even though it's a mess and a complete rip off of the actual Bond movies, I still quite enjoy Operation 007.  Most of the spy movies they did I quite liked...

Its a toss up between Space Mutiny, and Agent from H.A.R.M. Ba Da-Da-Da!!!!!!!

Hmm.. the least bad MSTed movie...

Probably Space Mutiny. It's hard to think of a decent MST movie even when the criteria is "the least bad".

"This Island Earth" actually wasn't bad, certainly not to the accustomed MST3K level.  But that's a special case.

"Space Travelers," in its theatrical incarnation as "Marooned," actually won an Oscar for special effects.  And how bad can a movie with Gregory Peck and Gene Hackman be?

You could probably make a case for a couple of the Godzilla and Gamera movies, the earlier in their respective series, the better.

I always kinda like Quest of the Delta Knights and The Phantom Planet. THere's probably an actual good movie that they did that I can't remember right now. This Island Earth is kind of a classic, but so is the line "If you're hands were made out of metal that would mean something"

"This Island Earth" for sure but of the episodes, that's hard.  I'm trying to think of one I'd want to see on it's own.  Diabolik was actually somewhat enjoyable but I wouldn't call it a "good" movie.  More like  cheesy movie.  Hmm.  I think "Clonus" could have been good.  Does that count?

I have to admit, I'm a bit partial to "Boggy Creek."  Those are my peeps in that film.  When I see the dorks in the razorback hats, it reminds me of dear family and friends.  We're so civilized here.

I think I'm inclined to go with Jack Frost or The Day the Earth Froze. They're not so much bad as a bit foreign and oddball. Easy to enjoy, but easy to make fun of.

Without riffing, I thought Space Mutiny would have been really entertaining in a "so bad, it's good" kind of way...

From the "so mediocre, it's not awful" side of things.... I liked Clonus, I Accuse My Parents and Girl In Lovers Lane. Those are the three that I can remember being somewhat interested in the plot the first time through.

your right fuzzy i forgot about jack frost.  I thought that was ok for what it was trying to be, a fairy tale kids movie.

I saw Boggy Creek II before it was MiStied and thought it wasn't a terrible film, just obviously the work of an amateur.  It's at least technically competent, whilst something like Monster A-Go-Go or Manos struggles with even the simplest of things.  The film even manages to look pretty good in places.

the places it fails to look good would be those stick people they hired to be the females in the movie.

The Space Children would be dull but watchable without any mst action, it seems like a crappy adaptation of a decent short story.

Puma Man would be hilarious even without Mike and the bots.

Diabolik splits the difference- it would be both hilariously weird and unironically watchable on its own. Also, Ennio Morricone soundtrack.

Space Travelers (Marooned) for sure... I remember seeing it in the theater when it came and and I was awed by the special effects...

I'm watching it now, and honestly it's a very bad real movie. It's like what would happen if you took Apollo 13, fictionalized it, drained it of all visual interest, and made it a long series of dull people talking to each other dully. It's the last 20 minutes of 12 to the Moon with a higher budget.

I have to go with This Island Earth. Easily a well done classic sci-fi movie.

Space Mutiny and Boggy Creek II are also semi-decent. They at least try hard and come off pretty well..

Oh I know it's bad, but relatively speaking I think it's "better" than most other MST3K movies on its own. And in 1969 it was better than a lot of things...

I don't know, I think wasted potential makes a movie worse, and that movie was overflowing with it. And it's not like a visually compelling space movie was impossible in 1969, the 2001 was released.

Basically, I think Time Chasers was a better movie, on the grounds that Time Chasers was about as good as it could have been, given the circumstances. Marooned could have been much, much better.

Man, that's a tough question. Like asking "Which colonoscopy was the best you ever had?" I guess I would have to say Clonus came closer than any other to being an actual movie, in my mind. But that's not saying a great deal for it.

I remember being very slightly interested in the plot of Time Chasers.

I'm also partial to The Touch of Satan as a fan of terrible horror movies, I think that was what they were aiming for with that one anyway what with the slasher opening scene and all.

Servo: "What was the name of this movie Joel?"

My personal opinion of this film was that it was almost "Manos" bad... terrible audio...

I would have to go with, as others pointed out, the Finnish/Russian fairy tales, like The Day the Earth Froze, or Jack Frost.  They had some really interesting special effects for the time, combining high production stage tricks and some competent film manipulation tricks.

The thing that made them so funny was the terrible dubbing and I'm sure the dialogue was much better in the native tongue.  That happens to alot of foreign films that are dubbed, the translation makes the dialogue sound ridiculous.

This happens alot in Asian films because English can't really capture the nuances of Chinese, Japanese, or Hindi.  The characters often turn out to sound really retarded.

I thought The Magic Sword was a fairly decent movie.  The Rebel Set also wasn't that bad.

well keep in mind that  Stranded in Space,   aka   Marooned    did win an Oscar.   and has some award for most used stock footage shots reused.  so thats my choice

A special effects Oscar, and if this really did come out in '69, one it damned well didn't deserve.

Surely you realize that the audio/video problems were not from the original film. All KTMAs are bad because they are nth-generation copies.

Yeah, but I doubt the horrible pacing issues were KTMA's fault. I must say, it's certainly among the better movies of that era, though. It and the Airport knockoff are pretty much the only watchable ones.

I just remembered "Gorgo", that was not a bad picture, the riffing made it funny.  They were really on fire for that one.  But the flick was pretty good on it's own, as they go...

Geez... you didn't pick on the three people before me that picked Space Mutiny!

Not to mention that I didn't really "pick" Space Mutiny. I specifically said the "so bad, it's good" thing because I was trying to place it into context in relation to the original poster's intent... and I mentioned three other movies that I thought were legitimately decent... so there!! :P

EDIT: You ARE the original poster. So double :P

I submit.

I enjoyed Gorgo from childhood. Of course, in my childhood I rewatched "Godzilla Vs. Megalon" about 37 times, and I loudly declared that It Conquered the World was NOT cheesy, so that doesn't have much bearing on actual quality.

Post by: BobEvil on April 03, 2007, 09:57:07 AM
I'd say Clonus myself because the premise was interesting and really, with a little touch up of acting and such, probably could have passed as a real movie.
....Then they made "The Island" and we all saw that isn't true.       BURN! Take THAT Michael Bay.

Seriously though, I think Clonus was decent considering the context. I know I've seen "Quest of the Delta Knights" as a serious film in the kids section of Blockbuster before, but by that point I had already seen the MST version so I was able to laugh and appreciate it at a different level. "Soul Taker" might have also had a chance with some changes.....

"Red Zone Cuba"?   Oh wait.....

I would have to go with "Gorgo".   Some of the other films were entertaining on their own (i.e. Future War), but they were NOT good films.   I think "Gorgo" was a pretty good film for time.

Although the concept of BEST MST3K movie is a little like asking "what is the best rash you have ever had"?

I can barely watch the MST version of  "Overdrawn" myself. It's funny, sure and I love it, but it's sooooooo boring and non-sensical....hell I get MORE confused when I hear more of the plot!

I kinda liked Deathstalker and the Warriors from Hell.  It was really hokey but I've watched far worse movies that never turned into episodes.  The other one as a fan of Macgyver type shows "Angels Revenge" wasn't terrible for watching on a Sunday afternoon as a background noise kinda thing.  Same goes for the Hercules movies.

for the movie that WANTED most to be good, i'd definitely say red zone cuba. it so obviously was desperate to be art.

the correct answer is clearly marooned. it really is pretty good. their story from the episode guide of when dennis miller berated them for doing a good movie is quite funny.

other decent flicks: i actually like the made-for-t.v. airport movie from 1969, it's from back in the joel days. i forget the name. and there's one where this astronaut winds up in a parallel dimension where the world's been taken over by a fascist government that i think is actually pretty decent. name also escapes me, i have them both though. somewhere.

Stranded in Space. Not to be confused with Marooned, which is actually about guys stranded in space, or Manhunt in Space, which would be a much more accurate title.

Did I mention Diabolik! yet in this thread? That's actually a perfectly watchable movie. I like John Phillip Law, I spend about two hours earlier trying to track down a decent copy of a western he was in.
