Title: How do you sort your shorts?
Post by: Action Batch on July 17, 2013, 06:38:07 AM
I was wondering, what are the category names you use to sort them?

I just use the names they come with and store them in iTunes in the movie listing with all the other movies I have in iPad.  That is for the ones the MP4 size.  That is how I have the VODs stored in iTunes too.

For the full size MPEG2, I keep them in the same name and burn the VODs onto DVDs and the shorts I just save the most recent 8 ones on a shorts DVD as well.

I don't really sort them.  I just accumulate them in sets of 12, and when that happens, I cook up a DVD collection with menus and a DVD cover.  They're on the DVD in sequential order by release date.

I used to do DVDs for every ten shorts. In chronological order of release. I did about 5 DVDs before I just went digital files only. I just name the file with a number and the title. Like for the latest it is RTS-195-BatmanTakesOver.mkv

Thanks for the feedback. I got to thinking because of the new Batman short, which is more accurately a serial. So I was thinking of creating folders for "Education, Etiquette, Health & Hygiene, etc" but I've already got about 11 categories and I keep running into shorts that don't quite fit into a specific category.

This may be a fools errand.

If they do the entirety of the Batman serial, I may just break with tradition and put all those on a separate DVD.

I basically do the same thing as Torso.  I'm at work now, but RTS195 sounds right.  As far as movies go, I used to have them separated by VOD and MP3, and then putting them in folders by series (like Twilight, Star Wars, etc.)...but that got to be cumbersome so now I just have them chronolgically numbered from RT001 Roadhouse to RT159(?) Fangs, filling in holes as I purchase.  If you try to do categories, there's always going to be something that just doesn't fit.

Of course, you could always go autobiographical  ::)

My shorts alphabetized themselves in the file-folder on my computer so they got put on DVD in alphabetical order, more or less.  The last couple of ones have been basically in release-date order with the discs having an open file system.

Here are my categories:

Christmas
Education (I'm thinking of splitting this between 'for children' and 'for educators')
Employee Training
Food & Health
Miscellaneous
Safety (thinking of splitting this between 'road safety' and the rest)
Sex, Drugs, & Crime
Social Guidance
Sports & Nature
Women

I really wish I had some sort of video player (connected to the TV) that I could put all the shorts on and shuffle play them.

I just shove them all in a folder marked "shorts" which is a subfolder of a folder called "Rifftrax."

Seems to work fine.

I also used to do DVD sets, until I realized I MISSED one on the 3rd disc (I had them all numbered right on my list.... I just missed it in the burning somehow) and gave up on the DVD's because I also ran out of shelf space. I still do the movies on DVD.......

...but for absolutely everything riff related, I've been putting them all on my external hard drive in folders. "Rifftrax" (which I am up to 160, due to my inclusion of both Missile To The Moons) "Rifftrax Presents" and "Rifftrax Shorts" namely... in addition to MST3k and Cinematic Titanic and Rifftrax Live etc.

I don't break up my shorts by category, because it would be just too confusing and there would be categories I'd have to make up for one single short or whatever....

I don't know what kind of set up you have, but here's what I did.  I got a cheap small form factor PC (mine was free from a friend, you can find them on Ebay (Dell, HP, Lenovo, etc) for like $100 or so, Example (http://www.ebay.com/itm/DELL-OPTIPLEX-760-SFF-COMPUTER-CORE-2-DUO-REFURBISHED-READY-TO-GO-/231017450366?pt=Desktop_PCs&hash=item35c9b68b7e#ht_3690wt_1154)), wiped it, installed Windows 7 on it, and put in an HDMI video card ($35, Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004N3BH0C/ref=oh_details_o06_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1)).  Connected this to my network, and shared all my Rifftrax.  Open VLC, drop all the shorts in a playlist, shuffle.  This is how I watch all my Rifftrax.  Oh, also, I recommend a HTPC remote ($15, Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/SANOXY%C2%AE-Windows-Infrared-Receiver-Ultimate/dp/B00224ZDFY/ref=sr_1_3?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1374088498&sr=1-3&keywords=htpc+remote)).

Here's what I did. I got a bio-metric implant in my BRAIN... And then I set up a Unix server inside there where I keep all of the shorts in MP4 on a 6 terabyte flash implant on the back of my neck. So now, I just THINK "rifftrax, shorts, random... play" and it happens in my visual stem.

Confession time: I actually interpreted the question this way when it was initially posted this morning. Thought to myself, "That's a strangely specific and OCD question. Why is in the Rifftrax Discussion section? Was there something about organizing your clothes drawer in a recent short or something?" I'm smacking myself now. Let's hear it for sleep deprivation! :^)

I have them in one single folder on my cloud drive, all numbered by Rifftrax-release order.  Kind of annoying when they had that small batch of two part shorts that get separated by a couple shorts, but I still like keeping them like that.

Yeah I am glad that they just go with the $1.99 approach for longer shorts instead of splitting them up. The most annoying two parter is the American Thrift short. The first one has Veronica Belmont and the second doesn't. Also the first one is letterboxed (non-anamorphic) and the second one is zoomed in to full frame (4x3) so the image is all distorted.

Autobiographically.  I have to remember when I purchased each short and the mood I was in when I watched it.

So, I decided to use some Xmas money on a WD TV Live box with an external hard drive. I spent a lot of time getting most of my Rifftrax movie files on it just the way that I wanted, and everything played well on the box. Both DVD (VIDEO_TS) and ISO files work great, and I was able to setup the riff poster image to show up for all of the riffs.

However, it turns out that the WD TV Live corrupted the hard drive, even though I always ejected it properly. Now, every time I connect the HD to my PC, my PC locks up so hard that I have to clear the CMOS to get it to come back up again.

I'm a little late to this party, but I thought I'd share what I do.

I primarily watch Shorts on my iPad, so solid organization is important to be able to find anything.

In iTunes, I treat each year of Shorts as a "season" of a TV show. (I cheat a smidge and put the 2007 installments into 2008.) Then I mostly number them by release date. Thus "Shy Guy" is the first "episode" of the 2009 Season, "Parade of Aquatic Champions" begins Season 2010, etc. (The Wikipedia list of RiffTrax (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_RiffTrax) is invaluable for this.)

Here's what "Molly Grows Up" looks like in my iTunes:

Name: Molly Grows Up
Artist: RiffTrax Shorts
Album Artist: RiffTrax Shorts
Album: RiffTrax Shorts, Season 2010
Year: 1953
Track Number: 2 of 48
Disc Number: 1 of 1
Genre: Comedy

VIDEO
Show: RiffTrax Shorts
Season Number: 2010
Episode Number: 2

OPTIONS
Media Kind: TV Show

Since it's my universe, I made a few nudges:

UNIVERSAL

2008

2009

2010-2012

2013

2014

ADVANTAGES

Presently, when I play videos on the iPad, I use OPlayer. It has two essential features for Shorts enjoyment: "Play All in a Folder" and "Shuffle." It also has background audio playing, which is nice for enjoying riff-quips while using the iPad for other stuff.

At present, I'm not sure how I'm going to handle RiffTrax ephemera ("Talkin' RiffTrax," "Kickstarter Thank Yous," etc.). Since those usually aren't as funny as Shorts/films, I think I'm going to put them in a TV series called "RiffTrax Ephemera" (with "seasons" as "years"), but I'm not certain yet.

I hope this helps someone!

I've been up-converting all shorts to HD and burning as many that can fit onto a 25GB blank BluRay disc as possible. I have seven volumes created so far and will have enough for another volume with the latest short release. All are in order by release date.   :D
