A lot of Hollywood stuff for sale if you are a crazy rich person. Scripts, photos, handwritten letters by Marylin Monroe. OK. But then things get interesting... eventually:

Yeah if I was going to buy anything up for auction it would be either a garment I could wear or a prop I could carry about with me.You think I wouldn't wear that helmet mounted Gremlin puppet in everyday life?
I'd be worried about the red one constantly getting damaged.
Nah, he's got a rank braid, which makes him either an engineer (it's Scotty's rank) or a security chief. And security chiefs only die if they're wearing gold.
Love them. Wish I could buy, the artist deserves the cash.Their other stuff (the ornaments for example) are far more affordable. Will probably get the Befana ornament this year.

Nice, excellent choice. I don't know if you are aware of www.starshipmodeler.com but they have some great resources.
Now if they could make a Battlestar Galactica and Imperial cruiser based on this scale..
NERDS!!!!!!!!!!!!
(Hiding my jealousy, because I want that model, and I was never good at putting them together.)
I am sure you probably know this already, but take your time!
Luckily, Marty, it doesn't look like the grooves are overly deep (as pictures indicated). I'm beginning to think that for the model used in the advertising pics that they'd used the 'paint deep and wipe off surface paint' technique to get them to stand out. Or is it just the lighting for the pics you took? [i.e. do you plan to fill and paint the whole thing to eliminate them?]
I agree... if the lines on the bottom had been as shallow as those on top, maybe. But those on the bottom are way more noticeable than the panel joints were in the series. At least it's big enough where there's some 'work room' for you to get at them all. Unfortunate about the mis-placed lights and such.
Good luck. A lot of work, but looks like it'll kick butt when done.
Edit: Oh, and yeah, it looks freakin' huge with the normal sheet of paper there. :)
Looking forward to more updates! Are you going to use the standard decals or get some custom ones to choose your own name for the ship?I'm building it as the Enterprise, so I'll be using the standard decals.
Wheres all the crew? Balok is talking to an empty bridge. They all got sucked into space when I removed the bridge dome... ;D

Had to put an extra resistor in to tone down the new lights on the shuttle bay.

:D This is great. I spend all day setting up and using lights that use 1,000 watts on the small end, and 18,000 watts on the big end. So to hear you say 'a few hundred watts' as if it's a huge amount of light makes me smile.
Looks great though! I admire the patience and dexterity that went into it. Very cool.

Funny that you say that; my only Star Trek ship is one of those DST Enterprises. :)
Yeah, I got the original one before the "HD". The only thing I don't like about it is that it kind of falls off the stand.
Those are pretty incredible for their size. The Klingon D7 is really impressive for such a small model. They did a nice job getting detail on that. I've got a 1:1000 kit for that but now I'm in no hurry to build it.
though, it needs a few redshirts floating out of the wreckage. ;)

Yeah, I didnt mean to literally melt the model. It was a figurative melting.Just melt it emotionally.
cripple the quality of superhero movies for about 50 years, as they were mostly treated as camp by Hollywood thanks to thisThat means: they were then treated as a joke, not seriously.
I didn't mean to upset you, but the importance of '66 Batman series is very often underplayed. It may seem that the tone of the series might have had a "camp" effect on the genre as a whole, but that camp feel was very indicative of the comic industry already.
This was the era of the comic book code, which created censorship standards so strict that it was nearly impossible to tell a "serious" story for fear of being accused of corrupting children. The comic book industry wouldn't start to get serious again for a couple decades, and then we started getting more serious comic book movies too.

Are they the same models from that old 3 piece Enterprise set? I used to have that years ago they are all lost now, I like that Reliant though.
Good to know. Definitely thinking about that set then. Marty, have you ever posted any of your models on the starshipmodeler.com gallery?
As it's one of my favorite MST3K's I wanted to make a print for some of my favorite names. There are many not listed on the print as there are over 40 featured in the movie however these had the best graphics to go along with the names. This print listing is for the Mystery Science Theater 3000 S8E20 episode for the 1988 film "Space Mutiny" starring Dolph Lungren, Debbie Reynolds, Sting, Santa, Pat Riley, Rick Springfield and God.

That is SUPERB!
To my left as I watch TV are silhouettes of Neytiri, Karloff's Ardath Bey (lifesize bust), and the Creature From the Black Lagoon (all 3 from Sideshow Collectibles); and on my large front speakers, so much harder to see since they only have very indirect lighting on them: Perry the Platypus on the left speaker, and on the right speaker a lifesize bust of Karloff as the creature from Frankenstein. But I didn't make any of them... so not quite the same level of satisfaction I imagine yours gives.
Makes me wonder if you could make more and sell them.
Hmm, I'm not sure satisfaction is the right word, but you got me thinking about how it would be different if I had bought the model. One that size and detailed would run $2000-$3000 or more. I stopped thinking about how much time and work (and frustration) it was to build and just enjoy it now, not sure the same would be true if I spent that much money on it. Also when I accidentally bump into it I don't worry so much about damaging it, it would be a pain to build another but I could do it even better and I'm sure a little faster if I damaged this one so bad I couldn't fix it. So, yeah, having built it does change how I think about it somewhat.

Sweet, I never got very far with my builds.Oh I bought them on eBay. I don't have the skill to build them myself.
I want to repaint the dome on R2 to be more silver and to fix a molding seam.
Why silver? It's not done, that's just the base coat.
Why silver?Because it's an anti-bacterial. In the old covered wagon days, settlers would buy a solid silver coin and drop it in their milk jugs. The silver would keep the milk from going bad without refrigeration. Silver paint on the Millenium falcon or other space-going vessel keeps Mynocks from chewing on power cables.
Didn't silver paint also help the Falcon make the Kessel run in less than 12 parsecs? :oWhy silver?Because it's an anti-bacterial. Is this the Bandai kit?
Apparently you can order the correct OT radar dish on shapeways for this.
Have you seen the mail-away studio scale falcon builds?
I though you had an airbrush on the big Enterprise?Nope, all hand painted. There I used 5 to 6 layers of very thinned out paint on the hull to avoid brush marks and get the color even, along with sanding. One of the reasons it took forever to build that model. Brushing on very thinned paint looks horrible at first but once you build up enough it can look as good as airbrushed. You just can't do masking as easily.
How big is this assembled kit?
Bigger than I thought it would be. Is it in scale with the other Bandai SW starfighters?
How big is this assembled kit?
Not very big, about 10 inches front to back.

That is REALLY awesome, MartyS! Nice job with the assembly, as well as the choice of craft to tackle after your Enterprise (plus). That is a cool model, and at over 3 1/2' feet tall, makes a definite statement in a room, I'll bet.

Wonder how much they had to jigger the build so that the number of pieces would exactly match the year the original was used (for Apollo 11, at least)?

Actually I think it was because it looked cheesy when it first came out that I just didn't give it a chance back then. But if you - with your S-F taste and science background - think it worthwhile, I'll have to check it out. [Just searched and it's not on Netflix, and is $40 a season on Amazon. Any ideas for freebie viewing for a test drive?]

It does have some cheesyness to it, and the pacing can be slow at times, but it's got the feel of old sci-fi books from the 50s.
Amazingly it's on archive.org, but pretty low resolution, but it will tell you if you want to spend money on it, the HD transfer they did for the Blu-Ray set for season 1 looks great.

I forget to look at archive.org for things. :( I've got season 1 downloading now. '50s SF books as a reference point sounds good - I used to enjoy the Heinlein books from that point (his later more adult/intellectual fare was better, but still liked the earlier stuff). And, if after a couple episodes it seems a good fit for me, I'll be looking into the Blu-rays. :) Thanks!
Actually I think it was because it looked cheesy when it first came out that I just didn't give it a chance back then. Did you watch any yet? After finishing the model I rewatched the first 2, they are fairly representative of what you get with the rest of the series. There are better and worse episodes later on.
Yes, Friday I watched the first two, and after the first episode went ahead and downloaded the second season from archive.org. Having seen it's tone and depth,

Unfortunately for season 2 they made a lot of changes that I didn't like. Can't even get the Blu-Ray for season 2 in the USA, only region B.
My friend that owns a comics and collectables store just told me that the MST3K Pops have just come available for preorder, and they will be released in October.
Yeah, I got the ones I ordered through him in October. He still has some in his store (Panther Comics, Turnersville NJ).My friend that owns a comics and collectables store just told me that the MST3K Pops have just come available for preorder, and they will be released in October.
Did he get it?
I know this is a little OT but Darth Geek you ever heard of The Cybertronic Spree? They performed songs from the Transformers OST live in full cosplay as the characters Hot Rod, Arcee, Soundwave, Unicron, Quintesson, Rumble, Shockwave and Spike. They even covered The Immigrant song by Led Zeppelin and Run with us by Lisa Lougheed and did a really kick ass cover of the Pokemon theme song.I've heard of them, yes.
That's awesome!! :o
HAL doesn't talk by chance does it??
Yeah I looked into that kit and it is a bit pricey..That's awesome!! :o

No, I've seen some people add a sound board with a remote control, maybe I'll do it someday, doesn't look that hard.
If the kit was cheaper I'd by another one and try modifying the lens to include a motion sensor and speech. But at $40 for a few pieces of plastic it's a fairly overpriced kit, so I don't want to mess with the real look of the one I have.
A Playmates Enterprise D, I 3D printed a stand for it, cleaned it up a bit and with fresh batteries the sounds and lights still work:That is really cool!! :o
