The year was 1980 and one trend was sweeping America! No, not that animated dancing cat from the Paula Abdul video. We admire you thinking outside the box, but jeez, you were off by like nine years. Reign it in a bit. We were talking about the nationwide fad of really crappy musicals!

Yes, 1980 brought us Xanadu, The Village People’s Can’t Stop the Music and of course the crown* jewel of them all: The Apple. Because what we needed at the start of Reagan’s America was the book of Genesis set to music.

The Apple tells the story of Alphie and Bibi, a pair of sweetheart musicians from Canada who make the Osmonds look like GG Allin. Alphie’s vaguely foreign-y accent and resemblance to sensei John Kreese do nothing to slow them down as they ascend the ladder to stardom. Of course, they have a little assistance from Mr. Boogalow of the sinister BIM Corporation, which is at times a record company, an oppressive totalitarian regime and the producer of a reality singing TV show (listed in order from least despicable to most.) Forgot the name BIM already? Do not worry, there is a solid ten minutes of the movie where people shout it at you while doing aerobics.

When Bibi is unable to resist the temptation and signs the record contract (GET IT???) she’s vaulted to superstardom, but at what cost? The answer appears to be not much for her. She’s actually doing pretty OK. Alphie on the other hand moves in with an elderly female landlord, as you do when times get rough. The real victims of Satan’s nefarious temptation appears to be the audience’s ear drums, which are assaulted with a variety of songs that are best described as Disco’s death rattle.

Mike, Kevin and Bill would love to stop and chat but they just got word that BIM is on the way. Why don’t you watch The Apple while they wait for him to get here.

This was the first RiffTrax purchase I made on my iPhone, as if that's significant. But I was on top of a mountain when it happened...

Ugh, my utter love for you guys is clashing with my utter loathe for musicals.

It's a cheesy 80s movie.

But there's corny, pointless and random singing in it in elaborate choreographed dance sequences.

Kevin might sing a number!

Ugh... but musicals are just plain PAINFUL on levels far beyond making them worth watching.

Comeon, have these guys ever let you down?

Well.... Fine! I'll buy it.

How can it be that I've never heard of this movie?  Its so awesome, awesomely bad.

And that's Catherine Mary Stewart isn't it?

When I can scrape together the cash I'm getting this. I remember watching the trailer and thinking of good riffs, especially for the "Speed" part...Mike came up with a way better one than I did!

Yeah, only vaguely heard of it but I've always wanted them to do another musical. Hopefully they (our riffers) will sing a lot.

Nice to get a break from breakin' truckin' and such-like action too. Also, gives me hope for a Roller Boogie riff. Maybe even the Lost Horizon (that would be too good to be true).

Dear The Apple, thank you so much for giving me a bunch of great/horrible new characters for me to draw. You frickin' weirdos...

Trekker, having seen this film many times, it goes quite beyond painful. Grease 2 is painful. This is a disaster on practically every level, including song writing. Seriously, if you thought High school Musical was bad, well, you haven't seen anything yet.

Heh, heh, heh.

I just hope I don't see a bunch of guys without shirts and bad blonde hair singing bad songs.............

You die, Bob!

I'm thinking right now this is a riff that needs a MKB intro. Complete with musical number. Can they sneak a little of the starter money for Twilight into an elaborate fantasia complete with gold lame suits, dancing riff-raff (not Frank-n-Furter's handyman but Conor and that other guy) and a twenty one gun salute to Selena Kunis?

Compound- I bought the Trax and will watch it tonight, never watched High School Musical.

LMD- I miss the intros, they did one for The Guy From Harlem and then after that there were some YouTube videos of them talking about some other riffed movies (the Future Carradine movies, for example.) I thought they were sort of neat and worked nicely on setting up the riff. Sort of wish they'd do the TGFH thing for all of their VODs as it works nicely as a set-up.

I can't beleive they actually riffed this one. I honestly thought it was a joke, and the were just going to release the Evel Kneivel riff.
Never seen this, but I've heard a lot about it. This is legendarily bad. And it's always good when Rifftrax goes into legendarily bad territory.

Okay, this riff is turning out to be pretty darn good. I just got through the "Coming/Cuming To You" song and almost had a stroke from laughing so hard. Honesty that entire song should have been the sample.

A great selection for Rifftrax, riffed well. Who could ask for more?

Damn, I wish I was in the mood to watch this right now. But it will certainly brighten the latter part of the week or weekend. I love to hate musicals esp. bad ones.

Super looking forward to getting this.  And I will (just going to wait to see if I get a Rifftrax certificate for my birthday).

Hopefully this will reignite interest in a musical List of Crap.

The thing that turns me off in movie musicals is the gaping fish mouth lip-synch technique that I see a LOT of in this sample. I'm glad the guys are here to riff us through it!

Abraxas was fun but not their best.

I agree. Abraxas is solid, but it's not really much to write home about like some other VODs. I still maintain that House on Haunted Hill is hands down the best riff of all time.

Definitely. There were a couple line where I couldn't tell what they were saying.

Also, I almost hate to say it, but I actually kind of liked the songs in this. Minus the lyrics or course.

I think a lot of the music was "not terrible," honestly. The film itself is a tragedy, no question, but I've caught myself singing "Cry For Me" all over-dramatic like the last couple of days.

So do the Rifftrax guys just not know the term "mooseknuckle"? Because with the guy from Moosejaw, it seemed like an obvious joke. But they kept going out of their way to describe his...package in too tight of pants...but not using that term. Or did I just miss it?

What I thought was funny about The Apple, was the fact this film strangely inspired Nelvana to animate two films along the same lines..

One was the special The Devil and Daniel Mouse. And if the title wasn't obvious enough, it was based on another classic film, but with an Applesque twist.  Daniel and Jan Mouse are like Alfie and Bibi, struggling artists who simply want fame and fortune for their works.  However, rather than beating round the bush with obscure and suggestive songs, they cut directly to the point.

Mainly, Jan proclaims the famous line in all 'Faust' based films do: she'd sell her soul to be rich and famous.  On cue, the Devil appears as B. L. Zebub, but doesn't waste time with a guise of a bad, demented version of Doctor Who's The Master.  He's not ashamed in showing he's evil incarnate, nor the fact he's gonna reap another soul.  So he tricks Jan into signing a contract in blood (yeah, hard to believe this was the SAME animated studio who brought us The Care Bears) and just like Bibi, Jan becomes an instant rock star.
Meanwhile Daniel pines for her, watching her fame, until the Devil decides on collecting his payment.

Ironically, going back to the whole 'Daniel Webster' thing, they take the Devil to court, though it seems here, B.L. Zebub is the judge with a demonic jury as well.  When Daniel tries going by the book, the Devil naturally dispels it.  So, in 80s animated fashion, he and Jan end up singing the song they wrote, which is about Love. And as you know, well... and I mean TOON INNOCENT LOVE, you pervs, not what The Apple was implying... and so the Devil's defeated when his OWN jury members find Jan innocent, because she wasn't clear on the terms of the contract.  Like, what the hey?  She SOLD her soul to the Devil, what's NOT to understand... but it was the 80s and all that rot.

The movie cryptically ends with a freeze frame of Daniel and Jan with the moral printed round them, whereas when you see it, you're like, "What the Hell just happened here?"  I mean, the Prince of Darkness was felled by a love song... an 80s love song, and not a popular one.  But hey, there was a musical about an Apple, which they only focused on for about what... five minutes...

Now where was I?  Oh, yes... the other Nelvana weirdness inspired by The Apple (sort of).. was Rock and Rule.  Except here instead of the Devil once again tricking naive hopefuls into a bad 80s musical, this was about a malevolent rock star (who apparently is called Mok) in a world of anthropomorphic dementia, who tricks a young female singer into helping him summon up a demon.

And this is in an inexplicable dimension where you can't really tell if it's another planet, an apocalyptic, dystopian future.  And why exactly Mok wants to summon up a demon with this singer, except perhaps ticked the Devil wouldn't take his soul for being a star.  Though great animation (once again, hard to believe these were the guys who would later produce children's animated shows), this tale is so confusing, it makes The Apple appear intelligent and comprehensible.

Anyhoo, I'm glad Rifftrax took a big crunch out of this odd musical and wonder if they'll tackle any other disturbing 80s musicals as well.  Perhaps maybe these Nelvana animations I spoke of, then again, I doubt Mike, Kevin and Bill would forgive me for making their minds implode from watching those films.

I don't think those films were inspired by The Apple, though they did have similar themes.  The Devil and Daniel Mouse existed 2 years before the Apple was released and Rock and Rule was really just remaking the former into a full length movie.

That said, I think that the reason they share such similar themes might have been that the corrupting power of fame is a well known theme and it would make sense to literalize such deals with the devil.

Still, I'm glad you brought it up.  Nelvana has made some interesting stuff on occasion, but sadly I find most of it to be crap.

This is easily a double bill with "Night of the Moon Beast" -- I'm definitely seeing "Love, the Universal Melody" as 1980's answer to "California Lady"!

I think The Apple was mostly inspired by Phantom of the Paradise, which has a very similar plot (but is a better movie and more downbeat). And Phantom of the Paradise was inspired by Faust and maybe A Star is Born.

I think it was inspired by some rancid Billy Beer and a bar napkin with a random biblical quote on it.

I've finally got around to watching, and just thought it needed to be mentioned that it's interesting that the villain, who looks suspiciously like the Master (of Doctor Who fame, the Ainley version) has a whole song and dance number about How to be a Master
