Title: Gravity Falls

Next to Adventure Time, my favorite animated show currently airing. This great series has currently aired 12 episodes on the Disney Channel. It follows two kids who have just moved to Gravity Falls, Oregon to live with their great Uncle Stan. Each episode focuses on the two as they investigate and deal with the oddities that plague the town. It stars Jason Ritter, Kristen Schaal, Alex Hirsch and Linda Cardellini, along with a big list of guest stars. The AV Club called it a mix between The X-Files, The Simpsons and Twin Peaks. It's a ton of fun. It also features one of the best opening themes of any show:

And man, "The Inconveniencing" and "Double Dipper". Spectacular episodes, ranking easily among the best of any show this year.

Also, paper jam Dipper ;D

This thread needs more Ducktective:

In all honesty, Gravity Falls is probably my favorite cartoon currently airing (don't let the Bronies know, or they'll have me horse whipped). The general style of the show is some kind of strange Twin Peaks/The X-Files mix, but, you know, for kids. Except not, since this show gets outright freaky at times (like, Courage the Cowardly Dog levels). The Inconveniencing is a main example here, though the most recent Halloween Summerween episode has this guy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpiPlDLJqsc). Crazy stuff, especially on a Disney channel show.

The characters are all a delight. Dipper's solid and reliable (and I actually do root for him in the whole Wendy infatuation, even if that plot is a bit overused), while Mable is the right level of kooky and lovable. It's also excellent to see a sibling pair on a show like this that consistently love and support each other, to the point where it's actually unusual to see them fighting. Gruncle Stan is pretty much a guaranteed laugh at ever turn (he's got a series Mr. Crabs vibe to him with the money scrounging, but he makes it work all his own). And then there's Soos:

http://www.youtube.com/v/faKiPGKgI0s?version=3&hl=en_US

http://www.youtube.com/v/NFQqam_thm0?version=3&hl=en_US

Moving on from that, the show is gorgeous to look at, has great music (even beyond the insanely addictive opening theme), and tops it all off with a good sense of continuity. You can feel a big story building throughout all the episodes, even if it's only in quick passing references to past events (or the Mystery Shack sign that never gets fixed), and I'm really eager to see where they go from here.

So, yeah. Love love love this show, and it makes me all the more sad there doesn't seem to be any new episodes airing until 2013 (not sure why, some sort of scheduling snafu on Disney's part).

I follow a guy who posts awesome Parks & Rec GIFs and pics, but he's also a huge fan of Glee. Consequently, although I've never seen a single episode, I know what the whole cast looks like. stumblr doesn't have a filter by tag feature, does it?   ;D

Oh yeah, this has nothing to do with Gravity Falls.

Assuming you use either Chrome or Firefox, you can download an add on to your browser called Tumblr Savior (https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/tumblr-savior/oefddkjnflmjbclpnnoegglmmdfkidip). You can put certain words or phrases that are likely to appear in tags that you don't want to see, so that your tumblr feed can be filtered. In mine, I blacklisted phrases like "gangnam" and "hobbit" and "Arrested Development", and, of course, "Carson Ellis". :D

Ahhh, feels good to have the show back tonight. Very funny episode, loved pretty much all the stuff with Soos and his question marl suit. Good to see more of the innerworkings of the Shack, too. And it actually has a good explanation for why the shack's full of fake stuff when there's so much real craziness out in the woods.

The scene in "Bottomless Pit" with the bear was just about perfect, as well as Soos' meditation on life. Hilarious. Also, supposedly the show has been picked up for a second season. I've only seen it from one source though.

"Sometimes I think, is this all there is? Is life just some kind of horrific joke without a punchline? That we're all just biding our time until the sweet, sweet release of death?"

Alex Hirsch did an AMA and addressed, among many other things, the DVD issue (http://www.reddit.com/r/gravityfalls/comments/1kgq85/i_am_alex_hirsch_creator_of_gravity_falls_ask_me/cbosuoi).

Quote from: Alex Hirsch
I sent like an 8 page letter to the folks in charge of merchandise basically BEGGING them to do a full season blue-ray with commentary and the works. (Because that's what I would want if I was a customer)
Their response was: Too pricey. A 20 episode set with features is at least 5 times more expensive to produce than a 6 episode set, therefore it needs to sell 5 times as many units or they'll never make a profit. With the DVD market in a lag its hard for them to convince Mickey to shell out the dough for this experiment.
I'll continue to campaign for it, but truthfully there are only a few things that can increase the likelihood of a full season set
1) How well the first DVD sells. If it does well, they see theres an audience
2)How many people go to the Disney store and physically ask for Gravity Falls DVDs. Believe it or not, they keep track of every time someone does this. If enough people do it it makes it into their business reports and they respond with merch. It sounds crazy but it actually works.
3) How popular the show is (ratings)

I went to the panel for this at Comic Con on Friday. This article (http://www.stitchkingdom.com/disney-gravity-falls-comic-con-72069/#) gives a better wrap-up than I ever could, but in short: things look great. The teaser they showed for the second season was jam packed full of really cool looking story snippets, and I get the feeling they're going to double-down on the mythology in the second season (especially in regards to Bill).

Side anecdote: on the plane ride back home, the fellow sitting next to me overheard me talking about the panel. He turned out to be an old friend of Alex Hirsch, and texted him with my comments that the show is great. Hirsch then responded with a Thank You. Which was nice of him. Said plane fellow than told me, in what will be as close to insider information as I'll ever get, that Hirsch might actually be done with the show after season 2, since he's really tired of having to deal with Disney and the limitations that brings (he wants to move into more adult oriented cartoons, at least so he can stop censoring half the jokes he comes up with).

Take all that with a grain of salt, of course, since I could've just been seated next to some nutcase. Who can say.

Whatever the case, I am super excited about the start of season 2. A friend of mine is interested in the show, and I'm going to binge watch the first season with him this weekend to get him up to speed. Here's hoping I can make him a believer.

I had actually heard similar comments about him not liking being censored by Disney and giving a few examples of stupid things that weren't really offensive that they cut on some podcast he was on (or an interview somewhere... I forget).
Title: Re: Gravity Falls
Post by: Relaxing Dragon on July 28, 2014, 01:32:18 PM
I do know he doesn't like how Disney is handling the home release aspect of the show. He's been begging for a full season Blu-ray release, but Disney keeps waffling back and forth. And then there's the whole madness that was the show's release schedule (they went two straight Comic Cons with the first season still not totally aired). Hopefully Season 2 at least has some consistency there.
Title: Re: Gravity Falls
Post by: k1 on July 28, 2014, 02:23:41 PM
He might actually do his own commentary tracks that you can download if they never get the full season treatment.  Those could be really interesting.

Mmm, that's good season premier. All the humor and characters we loved, and now they really are diving headfirst into the actual lore and mythology behind the show. Exciting stuff.

And also pretty freaky. I know it's par for the course for this show to push the Disney envelope, but the zombie attack definitely went a fair few strides into Cartoon Network territory. I'm surprised they had the show at such an early timeslot for stuff like that, rather than saving it for the 9:00 hour or thereabouts.

Interesting that this is the second episode in a row where the laughs (while still very present) took a backseat to more thick plot exploration and some generally freaky moments (never thought I'd see overt references to both Silent Hill and The Thing in a Disney cartoon, but here we are...).

As far as I'm concerned, that can only mean exciting things for the rest of the season.

I don't know of any other Disney cartoons that layer on the plot/mythology as well as Gravity Falls does, but there are several others that come close in terms of comedy, in various different styles of humor. Phineas and Ferb gets funnier and funnier every season; the Star Wars special was absolute perfection. The Mickey shorts are great; they give Mickey a characterization reminiscent of his earliest shorts but with pacing and energy more akin to Ren and Stimpy. I haven't quite fallen in love with Wander Over Yonder yet, but I've chuckled at it multiple times. Haven't seen The 7D, but I hear good things, and it's from the writers of Animaniacs, so I look forward to checking it out when I get a chance.

Another knockout episode. They're continuing to play coy about the ongoing mystery arc, but that's understandable, given how early into the season we are. Devoting an episode to the Pine's sibling relationship (equally from both their points of view for once) was a great plan. Seriously, this and Into the Bunker are easily in my Top 10 for the series. Very excited to see how the rest of this season plays out, even if I'm less excited about the wonky airing schedule making me wait so long.

Lest we forget, Phineas and Ferb also started with a killer Saul Bass/Bernard Herrmann credits homage, and featured a brief cameo from George A Romero playing a character named "Don Adadead".

Saturday was a fantastic night for Disney television animation.

I'm gonna go ahead and quote The A.V. Club on this one: "Guys, I’m worried about Toby Determined. He doesn’t seem like he’s in the best possible place right now."

I'm going to venture a guess that Alex and Justin planned that back when they thought GF Season 2 would air a lot earlier than it did.

Still, damn, my mind was blown when that was pointed out to me.

All those little objects have appeared in the show before, so it's possible that it started on Rick and Morty, and then Alex worked itretroactively  into the show at the end of the episode here. Sorta depends on the production schedules, which turns the whole thing into a "chicken or egg" situation.

It's super cool at any rate, of course. My kind of easter egg.

"Blendin's Game" was a fantastic episode.  I love the resolution for the episode, too.  Very emotionally satisfying.  Also, infinite pizza slice is a good wish, right?

Other high points:
"Gam Gam?"
"Now I'm not allowed on airplanes."
The perfect anti-climax of Globnar
So... who won the chess match?
Cyclocks!  Awesome!
Any joke about a fog machine.

Dipper meeting young Wendy was a brilliant moment.

Also, did anyone else notice Robbie's grafitti in the background.  Young Robbie called it.

I really want them to get back to the books!!

This season sort of spoiled us by giving us so many Big Story Arc episodes right up front, before shifting to more of these challenge-o-the-day episodes. Which are lovely and amazing on their own, so that works for me, but it still does leave the big stuff feel like it was left hanging.

Although the Agents are still in the background of every episode. So there's that.

Damn fine episode. Filled in a whole lotta backstory for Stan and his family, and still managed to get in plenty of great emotional beats. I don't like how quickly they disposed of the government agents (really hope we haven't seen the last of them, it was always a treat to see them), but still a great half-hour (for real for once!) bit an animation.

Definitely eager to see how the summer continues to play out. Looks like they're moving towards an actual end-game with it. Which makes sense, as I've heard they only want to do so much of the show before they give it a real ending and that's that. Just hope it doesn't take until 2018 or some such time to show it all.
Title: Re: Gravity Falls
Post by: Johnny Unusual on July 22, 2015, 04:47:32 AM
My guess is Season three will either be a last season or it will be the end of the summer and season 4 has them return for the next summer.  But yeah, I wouldn't mind having a real ending (as long as Hirsch has another series lined up by that point).
Title: Re: Gravity Falls
Post by: Relaxing Dragon on July 22, 2015, 12:58:08 PM
Have to be some heavy plot maneuvering to get the Twins back for another summer. I imagine that once their parents find out about everything that's happened, they'll be less inclined to send them back. Plus, from another perspective, Hirsch has been pretty clear about his frustrations working with Disney (especially with regards to the scheduling), so I can't imagine him even wanting to do more than one more season (though some folks have suggested a Christmas-theme one-off episode down the pipeline, which I'd be all for. If only to see the show portray more snow and make it look as gorgeous as it makes summer look).

Title: Re: Gravity Falls
Post by: Relaxing Dragon on October 30, 2015, 10:51:07 AM
In all likelyhood, these last few episodes of the season are also the last of the show. Partly because I don't think they can possibly go anywhere from here, and partly because the writing staff has said as much in recent interviews (though Disney, in its continued brilliant handling of the show, has decided to keep mum on the whole issue).

Here's hoping it continues to go out in a blaze of glory, because these last few episodes have been aces.

Well, let's be honest, the whole show has. Still my favorite cartoon on the air, and I'm including Rick and Morty in that category.

Quote
Everyone good? Okay here goes.
There’s no easy way to say it so I’m just going to say it: Gravity Falls is coming to an end. There are two more episodes left: “Weirdmageddon II: Escape from Reality” and “Weirdmageddon III” which will be our hour long series finale. After that, Gravity Falls as we know it will be over.
I know how tough this will be for many fans, and I feel you guys. But before you start sending me .GIF’s of pitchforks and torches let me explain.
The first thing to know is that the show isn’t being cancelled- it’s being finished. This is 100% my choice, and its something I decided on a very long time ago. I always designed Gravity Falls to be a finite series about one epic summer- a series with a beginning, middle, and end. There are so many shows that go on endlessly until they lose their original spark, or mysteries that are cancelled before they ever get a chance to payoff.
But I wanted Gravity Falls to have a mystery that had a real answer, an adventure that had a real climax, and an ending that had a real conclusion for the characters I care so much about. This is very unusual in television and a pretty big experiment, and Disney for their part has been enormously supportive. I know that hits are rare in this business, and its hard to let one of them go, so I’m so grateful that this company has had the vision to let me start (and end) the show the way I always wanted to.
Why did we wait so long to announce that this was the last season? The truth is, it wasn’t up to me. Before we started Season 2, my writers and I decided that this season would be the last. I wanted to announce this to the world at large then, but I was restricted from doing so, mainly because I think a lot of people were hoping I’d change my mind.
But Gravity Falls was never meant to be a series that goes on and on forever. It’s meant to be an exploration of the experience of summer, and in a larger sense a story about childhood itself. The fact that childhood ends is exactly what makes it so precious- and why you should cherish it while it lasts.
No words can describe how grateful I am for the millions of fans who have cherished Gravity Falls for the time that it’s been on air. Running a TV show, especially one where you write, direct, supervise, and co-star, can be an incredibly grueling experience. But every hand-written letter, tweet, tattoo, piece of art, costume and creation from the fans made this enormous undertaking worthwhile. To the Gravity Falls fandom- I love you guys. You’re weird and clever and smart and curious and have been a constant inspiration to me and the crew. You’ve picked us up when we felt down and pushed and inspired us to do the best work we possibly could. I hope you enjoy watching our finale as much as we enjoyed dreaming it up.
And if you don’t, keep it to yourself, pal! Yeesh!

Yeah, like I figured. Not that it makes the news any less sad, of course. But then, better the show go out on its own terms when its story is complete. Far too often I see a great show continue far past its sell-by date, and we as an audience tend to never accept the fact that good things do, in fact, need to end.

Here's hoping the show well and truly sticks the landing.

I was looking at the Pop Vinyl figures at Electronics Boutique on Sunday (check my Instagram for more details) and I heard two voices say "why isn't there a Dipper or Mabel?" "A Pop Vinyl Waddles would be the cuestest thing ever"

After taking a second to appreciate how amazing a Pop Vinyl Waddles would be I turned around to see 3 tweenish girls (12-15? I am terrible at judging ages) and had to ask (because I'd spent a day chatting with strangers and my anxiety was taking a day off) and asked "are you talking about Gravity Falls?" they all squee'd and we chatted for 5 minutes about how great the show is/was, which was lovely and fun.

...although I can't help but assume they were more than a little disappointed I wasn't 10+ years younger and hot while I was disappointed they weren't 10+ years older.

TL:DR - There's no Pop Vinyl Gravity Falls characters yet

I've had Season Passes in HD since the beginning, so at least I have all the episodes... but, given that Apple is terrible and makes it impossible to watch the videos you bought on a TV through HDMI (re: whenever I want to show episodes to friends and not force everyone to crowd around my tiny laptop screen), I think I'll need to rebuy the series on Amazon.

But frankly, I'd pay just about any price for a good, fully-loaded Blu-ray set.

I hope they DO release a set.  So many companies are getting to the point that they're not even bothering.  I've never seen Gravity Falls, but I've heard so many good things that I'd like to see it sometime soon.  But animated stuff seems to either take forever to get to Blu-ray (I guess under some impression that children don't care about Blu-ray and only want DVDs), or never make it at all (due to some weird, stupid trend in the industry that no one buys anything to keep anymore and all we want is streaming on-demand...*cough cough* SIMPSONS *cough cough*).

No Apple TV for me (or any kind of "smart" TV, really), nor any plans to buy one, certainly not when my TVs otherwise work fine now.
