Title: Adventure Time

I know we have some Adventure Time fans here, so I thought I'd start a thread.

I absolutely love this show. New episodes air on Cartoon Network Mondays. The show is replayed all throughout the week, though. Started watching it earlier this year and am currently making my way through it. You can probably pick it up at anytime but I wanted to go in chronological order, and that has definitely benefited in certain parts. It'll probably get labeled as one but it's definitely not just a kids show, and that you can figure that out by watching any episode.

Some truly great and hilarious episodes. Some of my favorites have to be "Ocean of Fear", "Memory of a Memory", "What Was Missing" and the brilliant "Adventure time with Fionna and Cake", where all of the characters in the show are gender-swapped. I'm also a big Lumpy Space Princess fan. "MY BEANS!"

Cartoons seem to be looked down upon around here, but, at the risk of being called gross, I'm not ashamed to say I love Adventure Time (or any good cartoon, really).

Looked down upon only by those who are dead inside.

It's definitely my jam now, and I'm certainly not alone considering there were like a million Finns at Comic Con this year (what, no Peppermint Butlers?).  It's not a big surprise to me that the a lot of Indy Comic creators work on the show, since the humour seems to be a descendant of some of the indy humour comics that made an impact into the mid-to-late 80's (particularly the Tick and Sam & Max.  Come to think of it, some of the tirades characters occasionally go on wouldn't be out of place in the Tick's mouth).

It's also very idiosyncratic.  It also reminds me of Scott Pilgrim in the sense that the creator seemed to be able to take everything they loved from their childhood onward and use it to create a cohesive world made out of their passions but doesn't feel simply self-indulgent or too swept up in nostalgia to create strong characters (I love the evolution of the Ice King from a pathetic stock villain to a villain who is desperately lonely for any form of friendship).

My favourite episodes: Rainy Day Daydream, Power Animal, The Pods, Still, Adventure Time with Fionna and Cake, Hug Wolf and Card Wars.

In the meantime, whenever I enter a room anywhere, I always try to do it like this:

Oh, great, now you got Bill going:

Though it makes sense that 70's TV is one of the few things the Ice King still remembers of his old life.

Dude, just saw the last episode of Adventure Time!  HOLY FUCK!  There aren't enough exclamation points in the WORLD for that ending.  I don't even care if it's a cop-out, that was some ballsy stuff.  I wonder if this is going to tie in with the snail.

Otherwise a really cool PB-centric episode.  It's nice that we are seeing PB be a bad-ass in this episode, as well as a character who hasn't been seen since season one.

Watched Reign of Gunters.  Am I wrong in assuming that Jay T. Dawgzone is a pseudoname for Jake?  If so, congrats to Jake for getting published.  Probably a bad sign if the Ice King is a fan of your work, though.

Also, shouldn't Jake be hanging out with Lady Rainicorn more often?  It's been months!

I like a little over half the episodes. Sometimes they are bit too...random (or odd like Jiggler episode). But the good ones are rather good, so I can put up with the ones that aren't so great to me.

I Remember You

How great was this episode?  Not only did we get to see some interaction between characters who we've never seen interact on the show to my recollection, we find out they have a sweet tragic, complicated history.  I've never seen a kid's cartoon deal with what it's like to have a relative who's mentally ill, so in that respect it's pretty effective stuff, touching on the frustration of no longer being able to make certain connection.  Plus, it surprisingly ties into the series overall mythology very well.  But I think even without the mythology, it's about missing someone who's only half gone-away.

BTW, anyone read the article about Simon Pertikov?  Great stuff.

Also, Jay T. Dawgzone's advice strikes again.  OK, seriously, well all agree that this is Jake, right?

Next week the season ends!

Of course, this almost means nothing since the next season begins airing the following month (seriously, the show's only 2 years old and season five is about to begin!).  Apparently that's where Jake and Rainicorn's pups will finally get born!  Oh, and a second Fionna and Cake episode (personally, I think they should have kept it as a one-off and gone in different directions, but it seems like a nice treat for the fans) with Donald Glover as Marshall Lee, the Vampire... King.  Doesn't quite roll off the tongue, does it?

Holy crud, that episode was amazing!  It also had a cliffhanger that was completely bizonkers, even for Adventure Time.  Can't wait to see where they go from here.  Luckily, season 5 (!) is only 3 weeks away.

Finally watched the season premiere.  Fantastically dark episode that answers questions, raises more but never loses focus.  I love that the second act alternates between being insanely dark and out-and-out wacky.  Plus M Emmet Walsh is the Cosmic Owl.  I love alternate reality stories and I love that this one takes a look at what if for a show with so many mysteries.  However, I don't think we'll ever find out why Finn doesn't have a nose... but it's the Lich's fault!

I think this video did a good job at capturing what makes Adventure Time as popular and as great as it is.  I find the multi-media aspect a bit annoying, but I think it's a very well-written piece.

The show has enough music in it that I don't think I'd notice if a musical episode aired.  Also, they kind of did in the episode where they started a band.

All the Little People

This is the kind of thing that sets Adventure Time apart from other shows.  It's a funny, creepy and sort of challenging episode.   Hell, the concept is brilliant: Finn gets a bag full of tiny versions of everyone he knows and begins to experiment.  It's chock full of metaphor and allegory and an underlying sense of unease and sadness.  I might put this in a list of my favourite episodes of TV.  Seriously, if you haven't seen this one, you need to check it out.

Post by: Johnny Unusual on January 15, 2013, 06:46:56 PM
Now that the show has started up again, what does everyone think.  I found the last two episodes just OK.  Jake the Dad was surprisingly light-weight for what I expected to be an event episode, but it had a LOT of funny lines, and everything about the book "The Baby-Eating Fox and the Babies" was awesome.  Good episode, but it was just kind of weird that everything gets to go back to normal.  I mean, Jake and Lady Rainicorn had kids.  Should that change their relationship a little more?  I guess Rainicorn/Dog relationships don't work the same as people ones.

Davey was OK, but it felt better for the younger audience for the most part.  Kind of fun, but it just didn't do much for me.  Also, is Bobcat Goldthwait going to be an additional voice actor now?  His character barely did anything.  Also, who was the voice of Davey in that one?  That's driving me nuts.  At first I thought it was James Urbaniak, but now I'm not so sure.

Jake the Dad hit home with me because I'm in that EXACT phase of parenthood right now. My son (Thankfully) isn't growing up at an accelerated rate, but the central message of "Don't put too much faith in the guides. Just trust what you know." is one that's comforting to hear. :^)

I think Jake the Dad was odd for what is essentially a children's show.

"There's never going to be the perfect baby."  Oh, and I love Jake restating verbatim the lesson he just espoused word for word.

Next episode is this season's "Dungeon" episode with Shelby, NEPTR, Ice King, Tree Trunks and Lemongrab must team up to escape a dungeon.  This is going to be good.

I haven't watched it yet, but I don't know that I wanted a sequel.  It was sort of a cool one-off.  Still, I'm looking forward to watching it since, surprisingly, the Marceline/Ice King stuff is great.

I will say, though, that I enjoyed the Fiona and Cake comic book mini-series.  Actually rather different than the main series which is joke packed, while Fionna and Cake really lets the series breath.  Some will be bugged by it since it means less jokes and less story, but I love the look of it.

I just started playing the 3DS game.  It's pretty cool.  It's sort of like an older Zelda game, but with some side scrolling mixed in.  I just wish it had dialog, but it's still funny and fun.

I was a little disappointed by the game.  I will say though I made it to the last boss and was very amused by it.  Won't spoil it but just when I thought it was getting easy, it got pretty funny.  I guess I was hoping for something a little meatier.

Anyway, caught up with the last couple episodes (or not, if the new one has aired yet or not).  I rather liked Bad Little Boy.  It feels more like a rather good season 1 or 2 episode.  It didn't feel like it was trying to hard to please fans (which is probably why Ice King hated it) and was trying to tell it's own story.  Nice.

I really like Vault of Bones (and Flame Princess' summer look, which reminds us she's still a kid).  Nice take on the boyfriend trying to get the girlfriend into his hobbies with awkward results.  Lots of great jokes, though I thought Finn was a bit meaner than usual to his enemies (still, very funny moment and I love how Finn goes from cruel to easy going).  I also like the growing of FP's character.  She wants to be a good person, but good or evil, there's no denying she has destructive tendencies.  Can't wait to see more FP eps.

The Great Bird Man

Nice one.  I love it when seemingly one note characters are presented with extra depth, and this turned out to be a fun episode.  With male nursing. *shudder*

I love PB's cruel laughter at the mermaid's plight.  "Turns out their just lonely.  Haha!"

Next episode is called Simon and Marcy.  Man, am I looking forward to that.

Are you serious with this last episode? Wow. One of the best the series has ever produced. Such a great companion piece to "I Remember You". Simply brilliant stuff. If it wasn't already, this cemented itself as one of the best shows on television. Also, it didn't air with a title card (for me at least) but this is it:

Yeah, it was one of the best they've made.  Not as out and out sad as I Remember You, but still very touching and sad.  Also lots of hints at the origins of Ooo (So PB was basically the dad from the Super Mario Bros movie?  That's neat).

Also, who wants a visit from the Clambulance?

Also, also, how jarring was it that not only did the show make an out and out pop culture reference, they used the Cheers theme as a plot point.

Next episode is "A Glitch is a Glitch"  So it that a BMO episode or a NEPTR episode?  Or a Futball episode (I don't know why, but I think it should be spelled that way).

Finally caught up.  Great episode.  Not the first time they've used 3D, but this one is more ambitious and out and out crazy (keeping in mind I really liked Guardians of Sunshine).  My favourite bits were the aforementioned One Second Later, "Still into it" and Jake remembering his hand.  Oh, and PB kissing her own hand, which, now that I think about it, is a pretty naughty metaphor.

Nice to have the Ice King in a straight forward villain role again too.  He might be sad and goofy, but he's unstable, dangerous and he nearly destroyed the universe.  Hell, the Lich wasn't even able to accomplish that, and that's his raison d'etre.  Still, it's hard to stay mad at him when he's trapped in a house being bitten by a hideous snake-scorpion.  Oh, Ice King, you so crazy!

Puhoy

This was a great episode.  I think this is going to be one of those episodes that people will forget how good it is.  It isn't as dark and unsettling like "All the Little People", as emotionally powerful as "I Remember You", as nuts as "Sons of Mars or as laugh out loud funny as "Hug Wolf" or as fan pleasing as "Fionna and Cake" but it is a really strong, interesting episode.  It is an emotionally satisfying, gently sweet episode with a lot going for it.  I also like the episode, which was a bit sad, but also quite funny.

Also Adventure Time continues it's tradition of awesome guest stars with Jonothan Frakes and Wallace Shawn.

"THERE'S NO GOOD KIND OF FESTERING!"

Oh, and I love misremembered Jake the Dog.

BMO Lost

I didn't care for the last two more kid friendly Treetrunks stories, but I love this kid-friendly BMO story.  Like the Treetrunks stories, it feels a bit more appropriate for a juvenile audience, but there seemed to be a dark element to these ones while feeling gentle and sweet.  There's still a lot of comedy (BMO's turns of phrase and the final minute), but it feels more in the vein of Winnie the Pooh (particularly the dialogue of the Bubble) and fairy tales.

Maybe I'm looking for metaphors where there aren't, but do you think this feels like a melancholy story of a tragic relationship.  2 people meet, have a child, lose a child, decide to move in together, then the husband suddenly dies and then the wife turns to religion.  Hmm... maybe I'm just thinking to hard.

Oh, and another Star Trek alumni in this one with Levarr Burton.

OK, that was adorable.  It's a very slight episode, but also sort of gentle and fun.  That's what I like about this show: it can have a different feel from episode to episode and though there are some great visuals, this is a very easy going episode.  Even the "fight" at the very end feels sort of mellow.  Oh, and I totally knew that's how they were going to use Jake's "the Jam?" sign.

Frost & Fire

A great episodes.  One of the few episodes where Finn really pays for being a selfish kid.  He's done stuff like that before, but he's usually forgiven or justified at the end, but now he's done something he can't take back.  Great episode, with some great visual gags.  I love Ice King's snow warriors.

What time is it? Well, in summer 2014, it's going to be Munchkin time. Er, for Adventure Time Munchkin.

Announced by Steve Jackson at GenCon, so it's legit.

Okay, I'll try it again.

This is Munchkin, a rather popular card game series from Steve Jackson Games where players take the role of dungeon adventurers trying to get to level 10. It is very back stabby and free wheeling.  It was released in 2001 and has sold several million copies over the years. Hey, here's the game being played on Tabletop:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=V6oMBSiL7Zs#!/

The game has a few licensed spinoffs: A Munchkin Conan game, an AxeCop game, a Pathfinder game, and small expansions with cards from Penny Arcade, The Guild, SkullKickers, Mars Attacks and others in them. And next year, SJG and USAopoly (who have the game license for Adventure Time) are producing a Munchkin game with Adventure Time themed cards and rules.

Clearer?

Too Old

Good episode, but not great.  I'm not as big a fan of Lemongrab as some people, but overall it just felt a bit weak.  I like how it addressed the Finn/PB thing, but I thought it was saying something that had already been said, pretty much.  There's still some great visual stuff though (poor White Lemongrab) and I like the end of the episode.

The Munchkin thing looks cute, but I would rather it be like Magic Wars.

Time Sandwich

Another Great episode.  A nice palette cleanser after the Finn/FP break-up arc and a nice chance to see old characters again.  I like the time bubble condundrum, since I've always had fantasies about creating a bubble of slowed time (I couldn't tell you why, I just do).  The gag of BMO just making a skate board video is really great.  Also, that sandwich does look pretty great.

If you're not familiar with LEGO CUUSOO, it is a method for fans to submit ideas for potential creation into official sets.  It happened with a LEGO version of the Back to the Future Delorean (http://shop.lego.com/en-US/The-DeLorean-time-machine-21103?CMP=KAC-SAHGOOGLEUS&HQS=21103&adtype=pla).  There is a really cool one that was created for Adventure Time. (http://lego.cuusoo.com/ideas/view/38958)

Go to the CUUSOO site and vote for the set.  They are only a few hundred votes away from reaching 10,000 supporters.  Once they reach 10,000, LEGO makes a decision about whether or not to produce it.

The Pit

Took me a while to see this one, but it was awesomely funny.  The Broken World/Yoga Room was pretty cool, though I was hoping that the literally cracked nature of the world would come into play in the big fight.  Finn's solution is pretty funny though ("check please!") and I totally related to Finn trying to understand Lady.  Interested to see what they will do with Jake's new sort-of love interest.

Who watched the Treetrunks/Pig wedding?  I love the character of Treetrunks but found her last few episodes lacking.  This wasn't one of the better episodes, but it had some great gags and character moments: the manatee wanting BMO to move in with him, Finn Vs. LSP and the very last bit.  Looking forward to seeing more of the "King of OOO".

"Aren't there video cameras down here?"
"I hope so."

Oh, Treetrunks.  You so nasty.

Who watched the Lemonhope 2 parter!?  That was pretty incredible.  I teared up a bit about a minute after turning off the TV.

Also, the propaganda video for Castle Lemongrab was pretty amazing!

Hey West Coast friends,

I'm in a group show at Gallery 1988 with a lot of neat people, their Adventure Time! show opens April 3rd (but it's a short run, closes April 6th!)

I didn't find that to be the best episode.  Not bad, but not terribly memorable.  It did do a good job showing that Jake can roll with anything though.  The Jermaine episode that aired before was pretty awesome though.

I watched a few episodes of AT OnDemand, I laughed my ass off. But, it is a very complex and ingenious story!

It's not something you can just jump into... I did some research and found an in-depth article on SALON.com about all the characters and the setting, Then, I got side-tracked by other stuff and never followed through to find and watch it.

Now, I fear I am WAAY too far behind... But I gotta tell ya, until you mentioned it here, I hadn't thought of it. Now, I would really love to watch it.

Can you recommend some source for a comprehensive collection of episodes?

Woo, watched the four new episodes.  All of them are pretty damned strong.  "Seventeen" ends on a joke that's at least three kinds of hilariously wrong.

That finale was great.  I didn't actually cry but I came pretty close.

And later, I teared up a bit watching this.
