Title: SCORCESE WON!!
Post by: J-Proof on February 26, 2007, 09:17:25 AM
I hereby tender my official congratulations to one Mr. Martin Scorcese (or Marty-Mar as he /likes/ to be called) in honor of his first and long-overdue Oscar win for Best Director!

Here's to you, Marty! You and those caterpillar eyebrows of yours! I personally /loved/ The Departed, and have loved just about very movie you've ever made! And props to you, because so far, you're the only director that can do anything remotely "cool-and-modern" with that DeCaprio kid!

Hip hip, Hurrah!

Uh despite his victory i think the rest of the oscars were psuedo political farce.

decaprio was great in this movie, scorcese is a good director, and the movie itself was decent. It's not something you ever want to see again though, depressing and ridiculously violent in my opinion

I thought it was his best thing since Bringing Out the Dead, and maybe his best since Goodfellas. I have no problem with violence as long as it isn't pure pornography (ok, sometimes even when it is) and the Departed (if the title doesn't give you a clue as to how it ends, maybe that's a problem) doesn't ever make violence look fun. Every bullet is sickening, and every death is painful.

Now, if only the Academy stopped nominating stupid crap like Dreamgirls, maybe I would start giving a damn about the Oscars again.

It doesn't, it give you a blaring look at what motivates the two main characters.

(Titles can mean more than one thing, man. For a good example, look at American Beauty.)

What's your problem with Dreamgirls? I haven't seen it myself; I'm just curious.

Well - while many people don't like the final resolution of Departed, it wasn't the screenpaly or story for which Marty was nominated - 'twas the directing, yo! And he directed quite well imo =)

True enough, but i dont think their deaths were fortold merely by the title.  Especially when they laid out the title as the motivation so early on in the film, even to the point of using it.

And he did,  but i dont think enough credit goes to leo, he made that movie as far as im concerned.  I hated martins role in the film and wish they could have found someone else for the role.  Marky mark, eh, my jury is still out on him, either i hated his charectar because he did such a good job or i hated him, i dont know yet.  Matt daimon i definately hated his charectar becuase he acted it so well.  It was nice to see daimon in a role where he wasnt the good guy, shows hes got some range.

Fair enough, but I meant more that it should make the resolution of the movie a little less surprising when looking at it afterwards.

I thought Sheen's was one of the best characters, immediately warm and fatherly without pandering. This, to me, was one of the best-casted movies I've ever seen. Wahlberg was more hilarious than hateful to me.

Oh, and Damon plays a lot of people of indeterminate morality- the CIA movie he was just in, the Bourne series,  the Talented Mr. Ripley- his weird sort of untrustworthy charm works well for it.

He had his moment, like when they were at his house and stuff.  But as a son of a cop this can be a personal complaint, totally subjective.  Sheen was a pretty ineffectual leader and cop.  Wahlberg was an ineffectual HUMAN but seemed to be fairly intelligent as an officer.  Which brings up one i forgot.  Alec baldwin, clearly was playing a drug addict or something, couldnt stand him either due to his utter utter failure as an intelligent cop.  those i realize are more subjective.  Dont get me wrong i really liked this movie a lot.

I haven't seen The Departed yet, to my utter shame.  I liked Dreamgirls; Eddie Murphy is great in it, and Jennifer Hudson is nothing short of amazing.

I didn't see any reason to think Baldwin was playing anything worse than a bit of a cowboy, but yes, the cops were on the whole pretty ineffectual. Whether this was just to allow the movie to be more symmetrical or a deliberate dig, I don't know, but I don't think it was an accident.

Well anyone want to explain why he was always doing weird things like dipping his face in ice water, and constantly jumpy and sweating?

He's Alec Baldwin, that's just how he rolls.
