Title: G.I. Joe: Retaliation
Post by: Raefire on December 15, 2011, 08:08:10 PM
*sigh*

Not directed by "The Mummy" Sommers, this time, though.

Still...WTF, Mr. Willis?

That's Britain's own Jonathan Pryce, inexplicably playing an American.  Personally I think the presence of Bruce Willis means that the producers acknowledge that the whole thing is kinda ridiculous.

The same person he's always playing: Bruce Willis.

The movie should be called G.I. Bruce, for all it has in common with G.I. Joe.

I actually adore the first GI Joe Movie. I don't think it's good, but it's bad in so many delightful ways that it brings me intense joy to watch it. I was afraid, when the first one came out, that they would forget that the cartoon was intensely silly and try to play it serious. Then I saw that Cobra had built robot fish to swim around its under-sea base and my fears were alleviated. :^)

Then you should find this quite enjoyable too Scott.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Now that I think about it, Bruce Willis' comeback line in the GI Joe Trailer should have been "My ears are ringing a bit".

This looks fucking terrible. I mean weapons-grade terrible.

Ohhh... I dunno... weapons-grade terrible is Red Zone Cuba. This looks butter knife terrible by comparison.

Of course, I thought the first GI Joe was a truly fun popcorn movie... It was sorta like how I hoped the first Transformers movie would have been in regards to turning corny toy cartoons of my youth into movies. Transformers had shaky and poorly framed action scenes where you couldn't tell what the damn was going on most of the time... GI Joe at least had action scenes that were enjoyable. Just like the first Mummy movie, from the same director, GI Joe was shit... but at least it was entertaining shit. The sequel looks to be something I'll rent / stream and have a good enough time watching.

Willis is playing General Joe Colton.

I'm a huge GI Joe fan and I didn't care for the first one. I might need to watch it again, but I'm pretty sure it still will not be good. This new one has potential to be better, and they ripped off scenes from the comics it appears.  I'm also interested to see how they pull off all the non-returning cast. My guess is they will all be casualties of what we saw in the trailer.  I definitely will see it in the theater.

Well the movie has been pushed back until March 2013... so they can add 3D in an effort to have better numbers overseas.

Stupid.

Wow when the studio that made Transformers 3 delays a movie you know it must be bad.

That makes no sense.

Except all of the movies did better than the next.  It maybe you opinion the Transformers 3 is the worst movie ever.  The studio on the other hand has over a billion reasons to disagree with you.

I thought Transformers 2 was way worse than the third.

But the third was still pretty bad.

In the case of the G.I. Joe movie, this one looks like it might be a heck of a lot better than the first one.  Even as a HUGE G.I. Joe fan, the first was a steaming pile.  I won't even consider doing an iRiff of it because I hated it that bad.

Calm down, Doc.

This decision has nothing to do with the quality of the film, because that would assume that executives could judge that kind of thing.  This has more to do with the fact that a movie they just released made a lot less money than they expected, and they all crapped themselves trying to find a way to fix the problem when it was already too late.  They figured they had to do something, and fell back on "make something 3d"!

Yeah, that one was uncalled for, Doc. He pointed out that Transformers 3 was profitable. You told him he has a low IQ. Chill.

Nothing more to see here! Mod has spoken!

On-topic, GI Joe is actually one of my favorite bad movies. It's all very stupid and unecessary in an extremely fun way. (WHY Is there no Rifftrax for it yet?) I was kind of looking forward to more of the same. I'm bummed I'll have to wait now.

That's pretty much the way I felt about the movie too.  I had a blast watching it.  It was bad in the same kind of ways the cartoon was bad.  Awesome bad.

You think I have no right to live fine, then either add me to your ignore list or come down here and put a bullet in my head.  Either way it's time for you to put up or shut up.

Maybe one day you will have your dream world were death squads execute anyone in the street who makes a spelling mistake or doesn't run their favorite films past you but until that day as much as you may hate it I have basic human rights.

I hope one of these days someone finds you to be less then perfect, then maybe you will know what it feels like to be treated like an animal. I am pretty sure you wouldn't treat a dog the way you treat people like me.  You and Hitler are cut from the same cloth.  You both think of yourselves and perfect and live for the day when you can murder people in the streets for not being perfect.

I hope you and your whole family spend the rest of your lives in the death camps you are planning to put people like me into.

Wow. That's like a greatest hits album, right there. Fucking vintage.

I found the first movie to be a big noisy mess that gave me a headache.  I pretty much think of it as Transformers 4 and despite it having the 9th Doctor in it would never watch it again, and this is coming from someone who likes all three Mummy movies.

If you don't like reading it then why are you happy it was quoted? Also by posting and thanking people you are getting it more attention. There seems to be a flaw in your logic.  Just think about why it gives you so much joy to see other people have problems,we should all look at the planks in our own eyes instead of the specs in others.  That is what I am learning to do and what what the meds help me do.  Unfortunately I have not been able to take them for two weeks because they interact with the meds I have been taking for being sick so I am not as controlled as I normally am.

i think it would depend entirely on the movie itself. if it can develop a cult following, then i would guess nearly all the income.

I still say I found the first one painful so I am pretty sure this one will be bad too.  This is coming from someone who liked all three Mummy movies,so I can handle stupid in my action movies.  It just this went to far.  I mean the all black super suits and the fact that it was a PC UN force that for some reason was named G.I.Joe just hurt my brain.  Also I felt Ecelston was wasted in it and cobra commander's origin made even less sense then it did in the animated movie and that takes some doing.

Ok, finally got through the "long wait" queue on Netflix and was able to watch this.  Definitely better than Rise of Cobra.  Although considering they took the time to add more scenes with Duke in, he really was still barely in it.  So I'm not exactly sure what they added other than maybe the scene of him & Roadblock playing Xbox.  RZA as blind master was just weird, and while I'm glad they kept the whole origin of Snake Eyes & Storm Shadows rivalry along with the reveal that

, I wish they hadn't just blown through that in a matter of about 60 seconds since that would have been really cool to flesh out in a later movie.

And while they ended up killing off a ton of the main guys on both sides there's still PLENTY of cannon-fodder to choose from down the line. Although

Anyway, I enjoyed it.  I really want to see the extended version that Best Buy has as an exclusive to see the extra scenes, but I don't have the cash to pick it up.  *edit* Actually here's a review of the differences: http://www.movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=723200

I didn't realize the head secret service/Cobra guy was named Havoc. (Why use that name? That's the name of a Joe vehicle.)
