Title: So.....The Doberman Has a New Home
Post by: Bob on October 11, 2011, 05:53:12 PM
I'm a dog guy and I have been without a dog since I had to put down my 14 year old doberman about 3 years ago.   I think I really want to get a dog.   I already have a spare back door that has a dog door for a large dog already installed that I could just pop back in so the dog can go outside while I am not home.

The problem with getting a dog include:

1.  If I get a puppy, it would spend a LOT of the time by itself while I am at work......not really fair for it.
2.  My back fence, while offering a nice view of the golf course, is only about 4 feet high and I am afraid a really motivated, althetic dog would jump it chasing down a rabbit or golfer.

So, while mulling this over, I have had two friends at work who have dogs they suddenly need to get rid of for reasons like their son is moving and cannot take the dog with them, they are having a baby and already have a 1 year old and it is just too much, etc.

Anyway, they are looking for homes for.....

1.  2 year old male yellow lab.
2.  4 year old male boxer.
3.  11 month old female boston terrier.

The boston terrier sounds great, but I am not sure it could really handle the dog door so well...... and I'm more of a large dog kind of guy.

The boxer sounds great, but I would have already missed 4 prime years of its life

The lab sounds great, but the only thing that worries me is the fence....... would it be able to jump over it?

What do you guys think?

P.S.   Thinking about calling doberman rescue, but the fence scares me a bit.

I sense something familiar about that pic.. Something I have not felt since...

I like the Yellow Lab myself of those choices :o

Personally I'd go with the Boston.*

However you'd most likely be happiest with the Lab. He's past the puppy stage, he can handle the door but, while they do have high energy,  I've never known a lab or related breed that would vault a fence. Not that they couldn't but it's just not a typical expression of energy for them.

*actually personally I'd take all three but that's how I roll. ;)

I love labs, and that looks like a pretty great dog yard. Plus, it's the middle age of the three, so a nice compromise I would think.

Hope all goes well. It'll be great to have a dog again.

Not sure how difficult it would be to add another 1 - 2 feet atop your existing fence and would there be an issue with your HOA for changing the fence height or replacing the fence altogether :-\

1.  If I get a puppy, it would spend a LOT of the time by itself while I am at work......not really fair for it.

I hear this reasoning occasionally by someone who wants a dog but works, and I have to say that unless you're almost always working 18 hour work days that you shouldn't let that reason stop you from getting a dog. Everyone (unless they're unemployed) works, and that's just a fact of life. Who is really sitting around with their dog all day? What is important is that when you are home you spend time with the dog and give it the love and attention it deserves when you can. Quality over quantity.

That said, I agree with nearly everyone else by saying I think the Lab might be best for you. They're good athletes, but I don't get the sense that they're such great jumpers, you know? Whereas I can totally see the Boxer clearing the shit out of that fence.

Yeah a boxer will give it a go and, on the second or third attempt if not the first, will succeed.

The Boston will also try it too (being a similar sort of dog) but won't likely succeed ever.

move to the yukon and start a sled dog team.

Hmmmm, I would do that, but I think there probably has already been a shitty Cuba Gooding movie done already.

Status.....

1.  The boston terrier would need some kind of ramp to get up throught he dog door and I really dont want to have to buy a whole new door, dog door set up.   Plus, she apparently is quite the jumper....
2.   The lab has not been neutered, nor house trained and is a good jumper......
3.   The boxer is still the boxer and I think that 4+ years is a bit older than I was looking for.
4.   Filled out an application with Doberman Rescue, so we will see where that takes me.

Stupid ass golf club fence.......

I don't know what rescues are like in Texas but the experiences we had with rescues are that they tend to view working a lot as a demerit, it shouldn't be but it was, hopefully you have a different experience.

Yeah, we shall see.   I generally try and work at least one to two days a week from home, so that would give the dog some "human" time.   And of course, dogs generally sleep all day so between being able to glare out the front windows and going in the back yard and lounge while I am gone, the dog should be entertained.

Next step, someone calling me back and we discuss dogs.

Ha-Ha!

My guess is they will have me review the dogs online (linked via the "available" link) and then discuss what I am looking for and if any of the dogs available and I would be a good match.   Then I would meet the dog, etc.

The Meryl Streep of dogs apparently.

I much prefer the "uncut" look for the ears than the cut look.

Okay, just got back from visiting the dog and she is a giant sweetie.   After discussing all her personality traits, about the only downside will be that she really does not like other dogs or animals, so I probably should avoid dog parks.   But since I am not really a dog park person, I can live with that.

Starting the paperwork and with any luck, will have a new pooch on Monday.

On the way home, stopped in Pet Smart and spent a small fortune on dog bed, leash, bowls, food, training snacks, etc.

The dog is going to eat better than I am.

Honestly, the ingredients read better than most human food.   And they actually have this (although I will be using dry dog food).

So, the start of day three with Annabelle and all is going well.   I'm in my office working and she is laying on a dog bed in the office by the front windows so she can keep and eye on the neighborhood and make sure there are no zombies.

She is adjusting pretty well to the move.   Started training her slowly on the doggie door and she is figuring it out.   Started blending her old dry food with the new food to get her used to the new stuff.   She REALLY enjoys eating.    She is about 60 pounds.

I was wondering where she would want to sleep on the first night and as I came out from brushing my teeth before bed, I noticed he had jumped up there and decided that was where she wanted to sleep.   So dogs do like packs.

Pictures to follow.

We've been having trouble with Boo the last few days she want's to get up on the bed but can't seem to make the jump (it's not a problem at any other time) so she runs around the bed whining and keeping us awake. She won't even let us pick here up.

So I've been sleeping on one of the sofas with the dogs so Ann can get some sleep.

But back to the topic, pics definitely :)

She's 4.

She has figured out that laying on the cool tile after a long 45 minute walk is a good way to cool off.   The ugly red color will be replaced by another one....needed to get her size first.

I think she is adjusting well.   Glad I can work from home this week to get her to get used to me and the house.

Next action items is the final training on the dog door and me leaving the house for short errands without her freaking out.

Oh, and she does the "doberman smile" when very happy about something like playing chase in the yard or seeing the leash come out.

5 day in, so far so good.

She's got the dog door figured out and spends a lot of time going in and out and laying in the sun as a yard is something new to her.   And it's true, she REALLY does not like other big dogs.   My neighbor's daughter has a (really shy and not so bright) yellow lab that, on the once every other month visit, they just leave in the back yard all day and let it bark.   I feel sorry for the thing as it also has some sort of anti-bark collar on and wont come to you when you call it.   Very people shy.   Anyway, she went in the back yard started barking and Annabelle heard that and went out and started barking at her.   Annabelle stayed by the fence, hackles all raised and snarled/barked back.   After a few minutes I went out and tried to get them to shut the hell up!

So, thinking that my neighbors might do that again at Thanksgiving and Christmas, I rethought my plan of having a dog sitter come over as I really did not want them to be barking all day at each other or my dog chomping on the other dog if/when she stuck her head through the iron fence posts.

Anyway, about half a mile from my house a new dog grooming/kennel place opened and I took a tour this morning and booked her the "junior exective suite" for the Thanksgiving and Christmas.   The place smelled like dog shampoo instead of dog poo, so that was a plus.  Her room will be in a separate wing from "gen pop" so it will be quieter and hopefully a bit less stressful.   They get a private yard, 3 assigned play times, TV (for white noise) and it looks pretty nice.   http://www.mydogsdayinn.com/ (http://www.mydogsdayinn.com/)
