Title: The LOC ideas thread.
Post by: Doctor Who? on August 31, 2011, 02:46:17 PM
I don't know if this will fly but sometimes I have ideas for LOC but i really don't have time to run one,I figured there may be some other people in my position.  Then again there may be people who want to run one but don't have an idea that will win a poll so i figured I would start this thread for people to post LOC ideas that anyone can use.

Do they always have to be the best things?  Why not the 50 worst or the 50 middlest?

Do they always have to be the best things?  Why not the 50 worst or the 50 middlest?

In the past, there have been a handful of posters who have been quite vocal about disliking the idea of doing a "50 worst list of something."

For the Halloween season (hasn't started yet, but we need to do things early for the next list).

Top 50 Examples of nightmare fuel (expect a lot of clown-based horrors)
Top 50 Body Parts
Top 50 Scary/Halloween-themed TV episodes
Top 50 Frankensteins/Patchwork Men
Top 50 Halloween Costumes (or costume ideas)
Top 50 Monster Movies
Top 50 Scariest Movie Moments
Top 50 Treats and Tricks (Can include non-edibles like pennies and comics!  Also, maybe include Halloween tricks, though I don't actually support them in anyways.  But it does add variety and makes the title neater)
Top 50 Zombies/Zombie Hordes (includes individuals and groups from movies.  Doesn't just have to be Romero style)
Top 50 Horror Writers (from all mediums)
Top 50 Devils and Demons (can include multiple interpretations of Satan)
Top 50 Personal Fears (wait are you afraid of.  Spiders?  Heights?  Public Speaking?  Of course, this one might make some uncomfortable, but I think it's neat)
Top 50 Vampires

I like Treats. Candy was done, but it was so long ago that we have a really different crop, and anyway it's a different take on it.

Funny, because of the similarity, I thought you might object to it.  I definitely agree!  And remember to check every entry for razor blades!

OK I couldn't find it with a perfunctuary search (and because I don't want "sexy Jar Jar Binks Costume"  showing up in my search history more times than it absolutely has to) however I'm sure one has to exist. Not sure what the numbers is but there's probably a rule that says

"If, due the the innocence, vileness or general dumbassedness of a concept, there shouldn't be a sexy Halloween costume of it, there most certainly is one"

For the Halloween season (hasn't started yet, but we need to do things early for the next list).
The ones I most like:
Top 50 Horror Writers
Top 50 Devils and Demons ->This is ingenious, imo. I like the idea of actually going into folklore. Demons are depicted in many diverse ways beyond The Exorcist (just ask Max Von Sydow; has anyone seen the Exorcist documentary where Max says he doesn't take the devil seriously because he was raised on Scandinavian folklore that presents the devil as a silly figure? Not to mention the silly Mexican devil in MST3K's "Santa Claus."

I also find interesting:
Top 50 Frankensteins/Patchwork Men
Top 50 Monster Movies ->this looks familiar, did it get outvoted in previous years?
Top 50 Scariest Movie Moments
Top 50 Zombies/Zombie Hordes
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Mixed feelings:
Top 50 Examples of nightmare fuel-> I like the idea, but I've never had fantastic nightmares, my worst dreams have often dealt with mundane matters like work or school. Customers & summer testing. Now, if someone was willing to get me some opium so I could have the wild dreams of the poets...
Top 50 Personal Fears-> Once I had the idea of an amusement park that, rather than thrill people with fast moving rides, forces people into situations of social anxiety & feelings of inadequacy. Another way of saying, like my "nightmares", my anxiety makes my fears prosaic for the most part. Though I still remember the more awesome fears of my younger years. I really do like this LOC idea, I'd just have to take some liberties & skip past my mundane real fears. "#1: Unfamiliar groups of people," that would just be sad.

Not interested in:
Top 50 Scary/Halloween-themed TV episodes
Top 50 Treats and Tricks ->I'm sorry, but can we please take a break from television & consumptives?
Top 50 Halloween Costumes ->Once again, I'm tired of LOC's of material consumption. I'd rather do a LOC of the actual villains whose likenesses sell this Halloween merchandise.

On that note, a few I've thought up: (I guess I should PM these too)
-Top 50 Horror **MOVIE** Villains
-Top 50 Masked Villains
-Top 50 Creepy Movie Masks ->[As in, masks appearing within movies. They don't necessarily have to be worn. An unworn example would be the mask appearing on Tom Cruise's bed in Eyes Wide Shut. Yes, he wears the mask earlier in the film, but it's most frightening when he discovers it laying face-up on his bed next to his wife.]
-Top 50 Horror Movie Dolls/Dummies

I thought villains were pop culture based. You don't have to be a cinephile to have favorite villains.

How about something involving voice acting? Either the actors themselves or specific performances. While I love H Jon Benjamen's voice he pretty much uses the same one for every character, so I might skip him for a list of actors. However Archer (which stars HJB) would make my list of performances since there are some moments that I have a hard time believing were recorded separately.

Catwoman: Halle Berry or Michelle Pfeiffer?

I thought villains were pop culture based. You don't have to be a cinephile to have favorite villains.

You were just bitching about pop culture stuff being all the rage, and I'm telling you why.  You do a villains list and it will be 99% from movies.
Why in god's name do you think I have an issue with movies? If you read my post, it's pro-movie. We've got a failure to communicate here. Movie villains are a pop culture topic I have an interest with. If I must translate what I've already written (which defeats the purpose of writing it the first time), I only displayed disinterest towards TV, candy & merchandise. Do you understand the difference between movies & merchandise? Do you?! I LIKE MOVIES. How much more direct can I be? What are you referring to?

(There is no monster, there is no monster, there is no monster)

You mean like saddam or Stalin?

How can you make sarcasm easy when it's already easy to begin with? You should be Sarcasm_made_even_Easier.
Title: Re: The LOC ideas thread.
Post by: Watchman on September 20, 2011, 04:14:10 PM
There has to be a built-in limiting factor or the list will just be the top 4 of all 15 submitters with no overlap.  That's why candy would work well.

Oh, I see, you're just pissy because I offended your candy sensibilities. I wrote about other things in that post, too.

I don't know why you were insisting that all these lists were "pop culture and consumerist" but you're completely OK with movies as a source for them. That's inherently contradictory.  This isn't about me being "mad about you not liking candy" (it wasn't even my suggestion to begin with), it's about your misplaced indignation.

An indignation that you're imagining.

I was offering my opinion on the various list ideas. The reason I don't want another TV list has nothing to do with any philosophy or indignation; it's because I don't watch much TV, therefore I can't participate in a TV-based LOC.

That's all there is to it. I like participating in these LOC's. That's why I'm hoping for a topic I know enough about that I can participate in. You interpreted my casual thoughts as some sermonizing indignation against pop culture. I had no such thing in mind. You're basing your issues with me on a misinterpretation.

If you're going to hate me, please hate me for the right reasons. Hate me for something I actually said or did. If you're going to claim I said something, the least you could do is back it up. If you just called me an asshole, I wouldn't defend myself, everyone has a right to their opinion. However, you continue to insist I said something I didn't.

----------

Honestly, I think the best resolution is for you to put me on a block list or something. This isn't the first conflict we've had based on communication issues. You jump to these negative conclusions about what I've written and get combative with me. I'm tired of it. Can we just both ignore each other? I don't post to this board for combat. This forum is supposed to be one of the more pleasant activities of my day. I'll ignore you if you ignore me, and we can enjoy peace again.

I'm still trying to get a Top 50 iRiffs. I think it would be great to let people who haven't tried that many of them to branch out.

DG, I'm rather fanatic about Rifftrax and have done a few iRiffs and I might possibly have seen 25 iRiffs, and I sure don't have any recollection of most of them. Some of us may have seen a few, but the number who've seen more than 25 and remember them well enough to rank them, well, that's going to be a handful of people here, at best.

Strangely enough, I'm cool with that. There are a handful or so I could rank. A Top 50 wouldn't even be needed so much. I'd love to see a Top 10. Even from just a few people.

I know that not everybody has tried a lot of the iRiffs, that's kind of the point. I would much prefer to have many shorter lists than only a very few because people felt they HAD to have ranked 25.

There was talk a while back about starting up a splinter LoC that would only be a top 10 or 20, for things that need to be ranked, but don't have as many possibilities.

The thing is, while I like them, it wouldn't really be that interesting if all it was, was Shaw Brothers and Studio Ghibli, you know what I mean? Thinking back to the directors list, there was no Fellini, Bunuel, Dreyer, hell even Almovodar didn't make the grade (nor did Bergman I believe). Which makes me think they just haven't been viewed in detail. Not that I'm putting anyone down, there are too many goodies to pour over in English, let alone tackle the foreign market extensively.  Still, it would suck if the 400 Blows was left to the side to make room for Inframan ;) (actually I like Inframan, just saying....)

If we followed Oscars rules, the majority of it would have to be in a language other than English. Which is what keep my beloved Ireland from getting Academy nominations (I know they've submitted a few that were not in English, but they failed a make the final cut).

I've read that the Band's Visit was not allowed because it had too much English.

I also don't like looking at the bottom of the screen reading, and missing whats going on in most of the rest of the screen. I think it's mostly due to me not growing up watching movies with subtitles, so I am not used to paying that kind of attention to all of the screen.

What exactly defines a character actor?
Title: Re: The LOC ideas thread.

What exactly defines a character actor?

One who plays characters, in the sense that you say "Oh that Mr. Hibbens is accounts, he's a character he is!"

A character actor plays memorable characters, but doesn't play the protagonist or antagonist (usually), they add flavour to the production which can be comic or dramatic. Often they're, hmm, unconventionally attractive, but this uniqueness of appearance is good for their career.

I love the idea of that as a LoC, although by it's very nature "character actor" is very flexible criteria. Also, some actors and actresses have been "character actors" for a lot of their careers and then become name actors. I would argue Alfred Molina was a character actor until he became a name everyone new because of Spiderman.

Well being known isn't a disqualifier for being a charcter actor, it doesn't matter if people see you on screen and say "Hey, it's that guy from that show" or if they say "Hey, it's J. K. Simmons"*, what makes him a character actor is the sort of roles he plays.

A realated list would be Voice Acrors.

*chosen because I'm pretty sure he still gets both of those responses.

Character actors are prolific actors who have a lot of roles, and you see them everywhere, but they're not really stars or household names.  They're usually known more by a few famous roles rather than by name.  Sam Worthington or Tom Cruise or Julia Roberts you know the actors pretty quickly by name.  Stephen Tobolowsky, David Koechner, or Beth Grant you would see on screen and say to yourself "I know that guy from that one movie, but I don't know his name".

There is some flexibility I guess.  There are some character actors who are prolific, and well enough known that you would know their name, but they're never really the star.  I'm thinking Steve Buscemi, William H. Macy, or Joe Pesci.

I guess the best definition would be "prolific actor or actress who is never the star, always the supporting character".

So a person can't be both? It seems like this is too complicated to be viable as a list of crap.

As far as the definition, I thought it had more to do with the type of role, regardless of its prevalence in the production, OR the actor's method. Some actors more than other's "become" a character and have a large role in defining them. These are the things that make sense with the term "character actor," because nothing about that says "unknown by name." If you can find a source for your definitions, I'd be interested in seeing it.

Well, I don't know where other people are getting their definitions but the source of mine, which incidentally you actually agree with, is having grown up in the spiritual home of English language threatre and having been around more actors and related bods than most people will ever have the pleasure/horror (depending on one's view) of being. There's subjectivity in almost all lists and borderline cases, that doesn't prevent those lists from going ahead. But actually yes, there is a sort of Maths involved, one can look at the sorts of roles and the nature of those roles. This seems to be upsetting you far more than it really should. :)

Title: Re: The LOC ideas thread.
Post by: Tripe on May 10, 2012, 07:56:52 PM
No. Many people can define things but the definition for a given list would be up to the person running said list, like I said most lists have a degree of subjectivity, which is why the one running it defines the terms when making the thread. :)

And again, my definition is the actual one understood by those who actually act it's also the one that your brother is using.

I mean, admittedly it's not as cut and dried as,  say, what a Pokemon is, but that's not stopped lists before. :)
Title: Re: The LOC ideas thread.
Post by: Invader_quirk on May 10, 2012, 08:04:00 PM
Still, even though most lists are somewhat subjective, in my opinion, this term is too subjective. Your definition isn't concrete. It's still more of a guideline to who might be a character actor. I'm not sure a host could give a definition that anybody could use to categorize an actor without any doubt. It's still too ambiguous.

Rereading it, I guess it is, though it was confused by additional criteria that the character is usually not a pro/antagonist.

So I guess I could probably come up with a list, given that it would include the aforementioned sketch actors list. I still think it would cause confusion, though. We've had problems with clearer-defined lists in the past, I think.

Well I think Wikipedia puts it pretty well.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Character_actor

As for the disagreements on what qualifies as a character actor, wouldn't the mathematical calculations which create the rankings help sort that out?  Like if one of us submits an actor not usually seen as a character actor to a list, it won't make the top 50 because it'll be overwhelmed by someone less controversial who appears on more lists.  Like when we did the Top 50 Beverages list, and my selections of blood, urine, and bile never appeared.  I guess most people for some strange reason don't consider these beverages.

That definition matches my own, but the first thing I noticed from that page was a warning that reads "This article's factual accuracy is disputed."

You're right that the dominant definition would win out, but it could also result in a low consensus.

Explain what you perceive to be a misuse.

Trust me, with the academic background I have,  I never misuse the English language. :)

If, for example, I notice I've used the plural of criterion as a singular, I go back and I fix that for my own satisfaction. So, please, tell me the nature of the misuse that you think you read.

Explain what you perceive to be a misuse.

As I highlighted in the previous post, you put forth an absolute that there was no ambiguity in the terms defining "character actor," then included an entirely subjective "equation" as proof. :)

Well then kudos to you for having perfect diction while talking out your ass. :)

Nope like I said, you can point to the nature of roles that an actor has had, you were the one who brought up mathematics, I and Thrifty pointed out that these things can indeed be quantified. You'll also note, on one of your customary rereads I guess, that I say "a sort of maths", do you need me to explain what I mean by that too? :)

Diction pertains to how one pronounces words. how one ennuciates, things of that nature, not the level of accuracy in one's use of them.

Again, you seem to be getting very upset at somebody who shares your definition of the term, it's curious.

You don't seem to understand the concept of quantifying. According to your use, quantifying qualitative analyses makes them quantitative. You have yet to give a concrete system to determine the nature of a role. :)

You'll also note, on one of your customary rereads I guess, that I say "a sort of maths", do you need me to explain what I mean by that too? :)
As I understand it, it was vague bullshit to give the illusion of making a counterpoint without committing to it. :)

Actually I've worked as an analyst many times and do so at this very moment, I understand very well the concept of quantifying.

And still, you seem angry, up to the point of swearing.

Look, you don't like the concept, that's OK; you don't have to vote for it, or contribute a list should it ever be selected. Maybe that'll reduce your stress over this somewhat

I'm never sarcastic when I use smilies. Unless it's the one with the wink.

Yeah I don't know, I just know that if I were to ask any member of the RSC that I'm on nodding acquaintance with to describe what a character actor is, they'd give the same definition I gave.

I mean, if you really want I could have one of my friends go into the Dirty Duck following a performance and video a few of them explaining what a character actor is, but it seems a lot of effort considering Bill's mostly just getting all upset for nothing.

This was actually the main point I was trying to make :P

And I'm not arguing about the definition anymore. You just seem unable to admit that you misspoke by using absolutes that you later reneged on and by alluding that "looking at" a thing and judging it is objective. If you become an architect, remind me to stay away from your buildings ("I looked at the girder and judged its length. It was quite easy for a man of my education.") :)

Anyway, that's about enough of this. I'm turning off Tripe-mode.

So to sum up......

Character actors are once again a subject of great controversy.  Much debate ensued.  Tempers flared, words uttered, feelings soothed.

And in conclusion, meh.

Oh and Luis Guzman #1, Brad Dourif #2.

The point is moot anyway.  The next list will be Top Comedic Actors/Actresses (changed from the previous Top Sketch Comedy Performers).  ;D

Actually, I think Character Actors is a better expansion of Sketch Performers, but that would be okay too. And re: "George Clooney is not a character actor," what about his roles in O Brother Where Art Thou and Burn After Reading? Not trying to restir the pot (our argument was not about that anyway, for those who understandably skimmed over it), but just prompting some more on-topic discussion.

I think though podcasts are more likely to get some sort of consensus, anyone can hear a podcast, many radio shows will be regionally specific.
Plus for radio shows it'd mostly be Radio 4 from me and really, aside from Mrba, who else would list those?

Yeah, but since we are doing an actors one right now, I think it can wait.  I'd probably be listenin' to talkin' toons if I wasn't already neck deep in other podcasts.

I think though podcasts are more likely to get some sort of consensus, anyone can hear a podcast, many radio shows will be regionally specific.

Hey, I don't know if you'd list it, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who would put in Hitchhiker's guide.  Plus I think one of the BBC channels plays Dr. Who serials and Imrahil listens to those (correct me if I'm mistaken.  Might of misunderstood the scenarios).

Plus, you never know, as some guys might be in the same area and choose the same local show.  Plus every country has natonal shows.  Perhaps some other Canadians on the board might also like Quirks and Quarks or Age of Influence (really cool show about advertising).

Still, I wouldn't be able to make a list of 25 podcasts alone.  I barely have enough time to listen to the 12 I currently listen to.  I would listen to more, but no new episodes of Affirmation Nation or Mike Detective... yet!  And they were the short series.  Only about 5 minutes per episode.  I highly recommend them both.

How about a mini list of the top 22 James Bond movies. (hell, we could even include the 2 unofficial theaterical releases)

People could list their top 11, maybe do a supplemental list ranking their favorite Bond actors. Any interest in doing something like that?

The LOC isn't about negativity, bro. It's a beautiful, loving celebration of the things we love and the ways we love them. So, why don't you take your negative vibes to some Star Trek board where you can harsh somebody else's buzz. We don't go in for that around here, friend.
I'm not trying to be negative at all Barnes. I just tend to think that sometimes that negative lists can be just as fun as positive ones.

My god, man. Stop taking everything so fucking seriously! Read my post again. Do I sound serious? Knowing me, does that sound like something I would post in earnest? Honestly, you'll have so much more fun around here if you just lighten the fuck up.

Hermione turned to Ron, who was SUDDENLY FURIOUS for NO REASON. "Oh." he stated "I guess I forgot that you are omniscient." His voice was livid but restrained. Hirmione had NEVER seen him so outraged. He went on. "Do you except  burnt offerings for a apology ?" That silenced her up. A hurt tear rolled down her lightly blushing cheek. And another post, let's be clear, I'm not the one who freaked out about being shown that only one person voted for an idea they though had had multiple votes.

Nor am I the one who decided to express their rage in the little vignette I quoted above. I also didn't decide this was important enough to send an email to request some sort of peace conference.

Really, would playing with some ponies make you feel better? I don't know, that seems to be something you like, you should try that perhaps.

I thought of one that would be cool, but I couldn't host:

Top SNL Sketches.  Problem is that I'm in Canada and NBC decided we're not good enough to watch classic sketches, so it would be hard to embed (plus, they are missing a lot of classic sketches, from what I hear) and NBC is pretty vigilant about taking stuff off of Youtube.  And it is a little close to when we did comedy actors. But I think it would make for a fun list.

Shrug.

The point is, I recognized the names of one or two of the others you listed but they'd not spring to mind when making a list. I just don't find it an especially entertaining show.
Title: Re: The LOC ideas thread.

SNL skits would be fun, but it would be a major pain to run, since all the skits don't have proper titles (That I know of). You'd have one person voting for "Cowbell Sketch" while another would vote for "The one where Christopher Walken plays a music producer". Whoever runs the list would REALLY have to know their SNL.

Top 50 Body Parts (Leatherface can host and recommend recipes and crafts)
Top 50 Costumes
Top 50 Ghosts
Top 50 Urban Legends (can we throw in superstitions with that?)
Top 50 Horror Writers (of all mediums.  Books, TV, Movies, etc.)
Top 50 Devils and Demons

Any other ideas?

We did not do monster movies, but I intentionally didn't mention movie stuff since we just finished a movie-related list and we will do another movie one in November (again, unless there is a sudden rush of objections) and yet another one in January when we do our annual "movies we want to see riffed".  Otherwise, I would have recommended monster movies and scariest  movies scenes.  I think maybe next year monster movies would be cool since a lot of them aren't really horror (Godzilla movies, King Kong, Jurassic Park, etc.)

You may want to keep in mind that most of us are straight males. I own exactly one pair of shoes (my sister has at least 20), and I pick my shirt and pants for each day based on which ever ones I happen to see first. I do try to keep them clean though. I won't wear anything that hasn't been laundered unless I have no choice.

Having said that, I could definitely live with Best Fashion in Fiction.

Ha, not really I think. Plus I didn't say fashionable, I say "best fashion", looking awesome would mean you get the best fashion award. I even included several alternate ways of phrasing it. Hah man, did not mean to scare everyone with fashion.  ;D It's a great Bowie song though.

2) Favorite obscure superhero/villain.
Well, we did top 50 Super-Heroes and Top 50 Villains and what would be the point of making them obscure, since it just means theres not going to be a lot of overlap?

Don't know if this is on here..."best post-apocalyptic worlds."

You know, there weren't a lot of women represented in that superhero 50 (something like 5 I believe?). Why not  do one that focuses on female comic book characters - not just with the supers, it could also include the memorable regular women-folk like Mary Jane Watson or Lois Lane? It would be nice to give the comic book ladies a shot in the spotlight (and perhaps have a supplemental list of the top 10 female writers/artists etc in the industry)

I would be, though I haven't seen a lot of the most famous episodes.  The original Twilight Zone doesn't get a lot of play in Canada, I guess because the liscencing is too expensive (the 80's Twilight Zone was pretty cheap though).

Think there's enough interest/options to do a Top 50 Twilight Zone Episodes list?

I would be, though I haven't seen a lot of the most famous episodes.  The original Twilight Zone doesn't get a lot of play in Canada, I guess because the liscencing is too expensive (the 80's Twilight Zone was pretty cheap though).

Other TV episodes lists that would be good:

Yes I could do 25 (as could Ann if she was on here) but I'm not sure that many others could, it could be expanded to anthology series episodes generally but then it'd likely become too dilute.

I don't think you need to quote me to suggest it.  The connection is rather tenuous.  Personally, I'd rather it be puppets.  Muppets would probably make up the lion's share and it also lets us celebrate some of the other great puppets like the Bots, The Thunderbirds, Team America, Wonder Showzen, Avenue Q, Spitting Image, etc.

I wish I could tell you that Imrahil fought the good fight, and he was just being sarcastic. I wish I could tell you that - but Rifftrax forum is no fairy-tale world. He never said who voted for it, but we all knew. Things went on like that for awhile - forum life consists of routine, and then more routine. Every so often, Imrahil would show up with fresh LoC entries. His desires kept at him - sometimes he was able to fight 'em off, sometimes not. And that's how it went for Imrahil - that was his routine.

I like this.

top 50 movie title graphics
This is a bit limiting, but if you had best movie openings, that would be great (and I really want to do that)

top 50 sidekicks
This was actually done under the title "top 50 second bananas."  I hosted it.

top 50 rewatchable movies
Good idea.

top 50 movies that make you mad

I don't think one would work for 2 reasons: people get angry about very different movies, which would make compiling hard.  Also, I don't think, in my opinion, negative lists are much fun.

I'd actually take it a step further.  Top 50 most hated movies on the forum.  If you go in with the premise "No matter what your favorite movie is, somebody hates it.  Don't take it personally." this could be a therapeutic list.  I wouldn't mind running a list based solely on negativity.  The list may have quite a few solo entries but I'd bet there would be quite a few that would appear on numerous lists.

That would be a good one!  I would also like to see another list for people and characters. We haven't done that in a while.

Something like the following:

Top 50 Spies and Secret Agents
Top 50 Gods and Deities
Top 50 Actors

Also maybe Top 50 Ends of the World since we missed the 2012 chance but we have 2 Summer end of the world movies.  It could include ones from Legends like Ragnarok, possibly real ones like a meteor hitting the Earth, or environmental disaster, and of course, ends of the the world specific to pop culture like Galactus or the bombs dropping in Dr. Strangelove.  And it could also include survivable apocalypses like the zombie apocalypse or the Mad Max world.  I won't be hosting since I already submitted my next list suggestions, but I think this would be really cool!

Well, we did cartoons in general.  There aren't really a lot of cartoons (assuming you just mean TV series rather than TV and movies) that are really that good.  As much as I love Steve Gerber, GI Joe and Transformers aren't really that good.

That said, I'd like to see top TV series of the 80's.

I don't know if being good would be a precurser to making it on a list of '80s toons. :^) Personally, I'd love to see it. It would be distinctly different from the list of top cartoons, and '80s nostalgia is always fun.

Well, I loved Saturday morning cartoons. And I agree, some of them are not as good as I remembered them (Thundercats, I'm looking at you). But there were also some that were. Now just in case this does become a future LoC I'm going to Spoiler this next bit, but do you remember:

I had this discussion earlier today with some friends, who was the best television millionaire. Here are a few names that came up during that discussion:

Thurston Howell III
Gomez Addams
Uncle Scrooge McDuck
Jessica Tate
Jed Clampett
Jonathan Hart
Montgomery Burns
Donald Trump
Karen Walker
Phillip Drummond
Blake Carrington
Lisa Douglas
Bruce Wayne
Harold Finch
J.R. Ewing

Seems there is enough television millionaires ( or billionaires in some cases ) to make a top 100 list. Perhaps a list for Tax Day?

I've been away the last few months, and phew, it's been a while since we've done one of these hasn't it.

Anyway, I was wondering how many Devo fans we have on the forum, do we have at least 9, 10 who could do an LOC for top 50 Devo songs (in honor of the passing of Bob Casale)?

Between LPs, B sides, rarities (The Hardcore albums), TV and Movie songs (Go, Monkey Go, to name one) a top 50 is more than dooable. It just comes down to whether we have enough participants.

I know we have Mr. Torso and myself... anyone else?

I could list like four Devo songs I know/love, but I don't go deep cuts on them, so I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to put much of a list together. Any possible way to expand it out a little bit? Though even if we include side projects and what not, I still don't know if I'd be able to put together much...

Would people be interested in me doing a second iRiff LoC? Rather than simply rerun it, which would likely result in a lot of duplication, I was thinking of make it a "runners up" type of a deal. As in, any iRiff that made it on the first list is ineligible.

Like last time, this would be a supplemental Loc, so it wouldn't effect the one currently running.

I have everyone's list that submitted last time so I can give them back to people if they want to see what they voted for that didn't make it.

What do you think?

I'm putting together my own LoC that I would like to start up sometime in the next week. It's basically a RiffTrax bracket tournament, which I will end up calling RIFFTRAX SUPER EXTREME SUDDEN DEATH WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP! In it, I will set up brackets of 32 full length riffs (MP3s in one bracket and VODs/Live Shows in the other) and have everybody vote on which would win (also known as which do you think is better.) Each round will be a public ballot within the thread and will last only one day per round, and we'll go until we have an undisputed RiffTrax champion. I'm still putting together all the rules, and I will be making original graphics for each match. What I want to know here is if anybody would be interested in playing.

You caught my interest.  I've seen projects like that pop up before on the forum with different themes, and they usually fall apart, but I think this one with you at the helm could work pretty well.

After putting together a few rules I've been able to reduce the list of eligible contenders to 108. The rules (so far) are thusly:

1. Full length riff.
2. Riffing line up: Mike, Kevin and Bill.
3. Franchises are represented by their strongest entry.

How I'm going to get the list down to 32, I have no idea, but I'm sure I'll figure it out. If anybody has suggestions, I'm all for them :)

Another Top iRiffs contest.

I have decided to do another Top iRiffs contest. Like last time, it is a supplemental so won't be counted in the "official" numbered LoC, just to avoid confusion with the currently running one.

This time it is more of a "runners up" and for those that have been released since the last contest. Basically the rules are the same as last time, additional notes in bold:

This is a supplementory LoC to the typical Top 50 lists, and won't be counted with them.

The Rules: Any movie, TV or short riff made by non members of Best Brains or thier direct offshoots. No Rifftrax, no Rifftrax Presents, no Cinematic Titanic. The riff does not have to necessarily have been sold on the Rifftrax site as an iRiff. However, it needs to have been sold somewhere.
Any riff that made the Top iRiffs List here: http://forum.rifftrax.com/index.php?topic=24212.0 is not eligible.

So, for example, the That Guy With The Glasses riff of Lion King would count, their Rifftrax Presents of Batman Forever does not, and their That Guy Riffs short riffs seen for free on their website also do not count.

Also, I have been told that The Soup, a TV show on E! does some form of riffing, and that will not be included in this, either.

Since it was unclear last time, yes Incognito Cinema Warriors XP does count.

Please PM me with lists, and any questions.

Lists can be 25 submissions, or shorter if you don't have that many.
All lists must be numbered. First be #1, second being #2, etc.

Also, feel free to submit any side lists as you want. "Worst riffs", "runners up", etc. Be creative.

You are allowed to vote for ones that you submitted riffs for, but didn't perform on.
This was an issue last time, I will be more strict in enforcing this

I will send back the lists for everyone who submitted them last time, in case they want to use it as a basis.
I'd like to get as much interest in this one as I had last time.

I am going to give plenty of time for people to  submit. So the deadline as of right now is midnight (EST) May 31st.

A better blanket term would be speculative fiction (except for the kind of horror that has no supernatural elements) but good idea.  I wanted to do a book one for a while, but I think just novels might have cast too wide a net, but just horror or fantasy might have been too limiting for some people.  And you could also include "Magic Realist" novels like Metamorphosis or most of the works of Haruki Murakami.

I looked but didn't see one, but considering it's SNLs 40th anniversary and all the hype on that, and that Rolling Stone compiled their own controversial list, we should do a Top 50 Not Ready For Prime Time Players, like, right now. Skip over the usual Rifftrax movie thing for now - and to heck with putting it to a vote, just be "mavericks" and do it now, immediately!

Now.

Right this very second!

I'm Gumby damnit!

And if we already did do that and I just didn't see it well, then.... "Never mind."

Edit, several days later...

Well, I tried to rally the troops, but it seems we have no troops to rally.  ;)

Have we ever done anything sports related? Or even had something put up for vote? Seems odd that we've covered everything else but not mined that subject. I'm not a huge sports guy, I watch a little NFL, play golf, and that's about it. But I could probably manage a general list of "greatest sports teams" or "greatest athletes"

Another idea, Fictional bands/singers?

I'm not a sports guy, but I keep recommending sports.  If it was athletes, I can't say a lot, but if it's sports in general, I have more to say.  I don't play many sports or watch sports, but I love good sports movies and manga (pretty much every sport has a manga, though for some reason, there's not a lot for ice hockey) and appreciate the sports in general.  Top 50 Sports could be a great list.

I'm all over fictional musicians.

I'd wanna wait and see how this List of Actors and Actresses goes (I'm enjoying it), but if it has say less than 7 actresses on the list of 50 maybe doing a list of just actresses after would make sense after all.

For the record I have 5 actresses on my list of 25, 3 in the top 10, but looks like they didn't happen to be actresses who other people voted for. But the list is just getting going.

Hey there, I see there's talk of wanting to get the poll for the next LoC going. CJones mentioned he's good to do"Top 50 Video Game Deaths". I hear me as the last host is supposed to make the poll topic, but we only have one submission so far, so I guess it's not poll time yet.

So submit your ideas you'd like to host in here I guess? Long live the LoC folks.  :D

I'll host a Top 50 MST3K Costumes list if people are interested. It would include outfits, of course, but also variations like robot Mike and Crow extruded into an ingot.

Sounds good! I'm just going with the flow here, really anybody could make the poll topic, it's all good. But I'd be happy to make it, I guess since I'm going with the flow you guys can let me know when you think we have enough options for a poll, or when to make a poll topic. Or somebody else could make it and as the last host I'd personally have no complaints with that. Whatever works folks.

I'm good either way.  Basically, before you run a poll (if you choose to do that), you should post a thread for topic submissions, so that people know.  Leave it up for about 4 days then after that, you can run the poll.

If you're cool with it, would you mind taking over  this process again Johnny? I didn't know the ins and outs, I don't have a data plan on my phone so I'm not always board ready. Whatever you folks would like to do is cool by me.

Sounds good to me.  I don't mind.

Is there a reason the Christmas LoC thread is locked?

Sorry about that. Pushed the wrong button. Blame it on the tryptophan! :^)

So the question is, what is to be done with LoC #100?

Feels like it should be something special. One idea that was often thrown around was to do Top 50 LoCs. What else would be worthy of the 100th list?

The problem with top 50 LoCs is that the LoCs are a bit ephemeral.  I'm not saying all of them are forgotten immediately, but I think a lot of people here wouldn't know what to list or have particularly strong feelings.

I also wouldn't want to do top 50 forum members.  I just don't like the idea of ranking people.

My two choices would be thus:

Top 50 Full Length Rifftrax (since this is a rifftrax board)
Top 50 TV Shows, which was our first LoC topic since Greg McDuck (Rest in Absentia) started this whole thing.

Both are relatively vanilla, but not too hard to do or to draw in interest.

Top 50 Full Length Rifftrax (since this is a rifftrax board)

Why limit it?  Why not the top 50 of any Rifftrax?

*shrug*  Eh, I'd be fine either way.

I'm still interested in hosting Top 50 MST3K Costumes. This could also include variations,  like robot Mike and extruded ingot Crow.

I think somebody should go through the preious polls we've done. There are a lot of interesting ideas we've had in the past that just never got the most votes at the time.

I kind of like the idea of returning to the Top 50 TV Shows well. Full circle. I suppose we can host a poll like we always do and we'll see what rises to the top.

Whatever we pick, I'd love to do another "Best of the Rest" like we did at 50.

Personally, I might wait till after the holidays for an official call for submissions, but people can send me theirs any time.

And yes, I'm definitely up for another 50 days of the Rest of the Best.

Have we done Top 50 novels? The mini series Good Omens releases today, and I was just thinking how great that book was. I looked through the Masterlist and couldn't find it, which surprised me. It seems like an obvious idea.

Also, holy crap, nobody has posted to this thread in 2 and a half years.
