Title: Name you most/least favorite animated non-anime show...
Post by: Thom_Serveaux on February 16, 2007, 07:28:44 AM
It's hard for me to pick a most favorite show, currently I'm on an FOP jag of late(Fairly Oddparents)  Worst? probably 12 oz. Mouse....

Family Guy is probably the animated show I watch most now, though I do love old Simpsons seasons.  Thundercats and TMNT are very old favourites, though don't really hold up today.  Hm...Tough choice!

Batman: The Animated Series!  ;D

I like 12 Oz. Mouse and I don't expect a single soul to agree or understand why. :^)

My FAVORITES would include the old Looney Tunes, Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Ren and Stimpy, The Tick, Earthworm Jim, Animaniacs, Freakazoid!, The Brak Show, Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, Rocko's Modern Life, and a bunch of others.

My least favorite: Baby Looney Tunes.

Favorites: Aqua Teen Hunger Force (can't wait for the movie), older Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, Metalocaypse, Animaniacs, Freakazoid!, Rocko's Modern Life, and probably a few others I forgot to mention.

I can't stand Tom Goes to the Mayor or 12 Oz. Mouse.  Man, either Adult Swim puts out awesome shows or total crap nowadays.

King of the Hill is practically DESIGNED to be meh. I think that's how it sticks around. Nobody expects greatness, so they don't get up-in-arms when they just get a steady stream of goodness. When the Simpsons are "only" good, it gets treated as though it's awful. :^)

nah i think king of the hill sticks around cause the charectar of Hill is so real, its very red state ( i think thats the republican color) and very much represents a part of the country that often feels it doesnt get represented.

Ren and Stimpy was hilarious when i would catch it on Nickelodeon years ago. Futurama was great stuff. The Venture Bros. is so funny, i had not laughed that hard in a long time.

I still like the classic Warner Bros. cartoons and some Disney as well. Stuff from the 1940s into the late 1950s.

Most Hanna Barbara material annoyed me, even as a child.

GI Joe was great. I was flipping channels a few days ago and caught the original Gi Joe and thought to myself. "I actually watched this."     ;D

Sticking only with TV shows and in no particular order (also only stuff I like; trying to keep it positive):

The Venture Brothers
Robot Chicken
Samurai Jack
The Simpsons
South Park
Family Guy
(sometimes, when it's not busy trying too hard)
The King of the Hill (although I haven't watched in a while)
Batman: The Animated Series (not to be confused with KidsWB's current The Batman show)
Superman: The Animated Series
Justice League
and Justice League Unlimited (I spent my childhood being subjected to the Superfriends; seeing classic DC characters done right warms my heart)
Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Harvey Birdman: Attorney At Law
Space Ghost Coast To Coast
Ren & Stimpy
(the good stuff, not the SpikeTV version)
Teen Titans (shut up, you)

Favorites, recent stuff:  Futurama, Simpsons, South Park, Venture Bros.
Favorite classics:  Rocky and Bullwinkle and the original Jonny Quest.

Least favorite:  There's so much stuff I've never watched that would qualify, but of stuff that I've seen at least some of it, how about Flintstones, Smurfs, Thundercats and Masters of the Universe.

Best: 3-way tie between Home Movies, Venture Bros, and the animated Batman series.

Worst: Scooby Doo. I can't stand this show. Never could. And I hate that it became popular again after the movies.

Much as it pains me to admit it, Scooby's resurgence actually happened BEFORE the movies. In '99, Cartoon Network actually held an election to determine what cartoon should be the president of Cartoon Network. Scooby won. He won over Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Yogi Bear, Brak, and 45 others, if memory serves. (BLASPHEMY, I say!) At that point, Cartoon Network started showing Scooby shamelessly as often as possible. THAT led to the movie...

I thought Scooby Doo was just fine during the early years... then they introduced Scrappy and whatever the dumb one was called and it was all down hill (I want to say he was Scooby Dumb, but that just doesn't sound right). There is nothing wrong with the original gang solving mysteries with the occasional 1970's guest star thrown in to help. What kind of cold, sadistic childhood did you have to lead to not find enjoyment in Scooby and Shaggy acting like barbers and giving the monster a haircut?!? Comedy GOLD to an eight year old... and if you deny it then either you are lying, don't recall being eight or you are a cold, cold bastard. Anyways...

Favorites:

Freakazoid
Scooby Doo (the early years)
Ren'n'Stimpy (the early years)
Simpsons (more so towards the early years... but they still sneak in a gem here and there)
GI Joe (for the most part it was perfectly written to it's target audience... to expect it to hold up as you grow old is naive at best, retarded at worst)
Animaniacs
Pinky and the Brain

Least:

Nothing here really. If a newer animated show doesn't immediately catch my interest, I usually don't come back. There were so many horrible cartoons when I was a kid, I won't bother trying to recall them.

Well, I must have been an abnormal child because I never found Scooby Doo very appealing and/or funny. But then, I never found the Flintstones or the Jetsons that great either.

Mind you, this is only MY opinion. Doesn't mean any of those shows aren't worth liking.
Title: Re: Name you most/least favorite animated non-anime show...
Post by: Nunyerbiz on February 20, 2007, 05:18:11 PM
I never found much appealing in Flintstones or Jetsons either... but I guess the whole solving mysteries angle just saved Scooby for me. Also, I was watching first run, original gang Scooby episodes as a child in the late 70's. I'm sure perceptions change for people that grew up later with full exposure to cable TV and whatnot. I'm not trying to guess your age, but if you didn't like Scooby as a 2nd grader in 1979... then yea, you might have been abnormal. There was little else to actually like.

Transformers and GI Joe... some of the stuff on GI Joe was quite risque for a kids show and for its day. It was ahead of its time.

Yeah, I didn't mention Looney Tunes, since those weren't made for television. In the same vein, almost anything by Tex Avery works.

Actually have only watched a few eps of Beyond. I'm a huge fan of the original animated series, but never had time/energy to give the rest of the 'toons their due. Please tell me Mark Hammil voiced the Joker for the ep (assuming it was the original Joker).

It was a feature-length movie and, for my money, is right up there as a candidate for Best Batman Film (and, yes, Mark Hamill is TOTALLY in it). Make sure the version you rent says "The Original, Uncut Version" at the top of the front; you won't regret it.

BTW, if you were a fan of B:TAS, you might want to consider the excellent Superman and Justice League series from the same creative team.

I'm still waiting for a Marvel 'toon series to come out that's as well done as the DC series..es...es..es. The early '90s X-Men and Spiderman toons were all right, but still not quite THERE.

I know what you mean. X-Men was based on the 90's version of the team (ICK!), and was both over-detailed and under-animated. My only BIG beef with the 90's Spider-Man is the compromises that were made to make the show "kid-safe" (Marvel Productions failed to stand up to Fox Standards & Practices the way WB Animation did with Batman).

Ah, way ahead of ya there. I watch Superman/Justice League any chance I get (which isn't often. Full time jobs are life vampires more than any videogame could be). I LOVE the Justice League, especially the smaller core team. I think the show is beautifully done and it's about one notch below the Batman series in my mind.

I'll have to check out the Beyond movie then. Better than Mask of the Phantasm?

Boy, it's neck-and-neck. Return of the Joker is PG-13, and is more intense than Mask (the flashback sequence is possibly the most chilling thing I've seen in any of the DC animated projects). But Mask of the Phantasm does have more in the way of character development.

Let me throw in a good word for the horribly non-animated mid-60s Marvel toons. Captain America, the Hulk, Namor, Iron Man and Thor in short chapters, designed to fit two per 15-minute shows; what they lacked in lame animation, they made up for with using the original art and storylines.  I tire of these current guys who make inane changes just for the purpose of putting their stamp on the franchise.
You can also play "Name the Artist" as the clip art switches back and forth.  The cheesy theme songs almost rise to the level of the 60s Spider-Man theme.
I'm also hoping that this year's Fantastic Four movie finally leads to the DVD release of their 60s toon.  Only 20 episodes but the majority faithfully adapted Stan and Jack's stories.

I'm a bit strange but in some order
favorites

south park
venture brothers
futurama
sea lab
red vs. blue (I think this counts as animated)
aqua teen
loony tunes(really number one, but they dont exactly have new episodes)

meh
family guy(used to like it till south park showed me the truth)
american dad
king of the hill

absolutely horribly despised

tom goes to the mayor

(If I see more than a frame of the show, I get nauseated, hell I have a bad week if I see more than a 1/2 a second)

two of my favorites:

Gargoyles
Reboot

least favorite:

Any animated show with 'ugly', 'cheap', or both (which is most common) as the animation style, or any show where pure stupidity is the basis of the humor (I'm talking to you: Ed, Edd, & Eddy, King of the Hill, ATHF, Drawn Together, etc etc).

Please do your part in supporting more intelligent, sophisticated, and visually pleasing entertainment. America has had a whole generation of taste-destruction and dumbing-down. Can we please reverse the trend now? PLEASE?!

Title: Re: Name you most/least favorite animated non-anime show...

Yes, it's ugly, but it's also about rednecks, meaning it also falls into the 'stupid' category as far as I'm concerned.

I don't think Simpsons or Futurama are worse (not that they're great works of art or anything, but they're tolerable) simply because they use a particular style of cartoon art that isn't trying to pass them off as somewhat realistic. KotH on the other hand is just a moderately improved Beavis and Butthead... which was also incredibly stupid mind you. So, coming from the beavis & butthead roots, having ugly artwork, and following the story of rednecks... it's all negatives in my book.

To call hank hill a redneck just doesnt seem fair in my book.  Yeah he isnt frasier or anything, and yeah he lives in middle class america, doing a smaller job than some. But he is a decent person who isnt retarded, the show isnt even about him being stupid.

Who said anything about Hank? Yes, I actually realize he's the "best" / "most normal" character, but there are other characters besides him. I was talking about the show as a whole, not Hank specifically.

Truthfully though, Hank IS a redneck. A very mild, possibly even borderline breed, but still belonging to the species. :P

Nothing if you're like Hank. Like all social groups, there's good and bad mixed in. I need not belabor the obvious on the 'bad' segment of that particular social population, not when it's all been heard a thousand times before.

i guess my real problem is more or less what shows you were comparing it to.  I agree with you on things like ed edd and eddy, ATHF and drawn together.  I just dont think king of the hill is so terrible a show that its got to be lumped into such a sad sad segment.

Just because you know a Dale, Hank or Bill, doesn't necessarily mean you want to associate with them. Watching a show like KotH, when I myself not only live in the southern USA, but was born and raised here (and did NOT turn out as a redneck of any sort), is basically overkill. I see enough of the various southern cultures, and the various good and bad sub-cultures within those major groups. I don't want to watch a TV show about them, when I already see them first hand.

I liken the view to that of an Eskimo who doesn't just see "snow", but various forms of it. Within a culture, rednecks in this particular case, there are differences in the people belonging to that general group, and some of those you'd just rather not associate with in any way. This is the same as preferring to play in snow considered 'fresh powder' (or at least sticky enough to make good snowballs), and preferring NOT to play in muddy slush that seeps as quickly as possible into your shoes. Even with Hank representing the 'fine powder' example, KotH still, in my opinion, contains more muddy slush than anything else, and not just in characters, but the characters' circumstances within the show, the show origins (beavis and butthead), poor visual presentation, and so on.

That's about the best explanation I can give. Obviously, my opinion is different than some of yours, but we'll just have to agree to disagree in this matter.

It's just on a different level/floor of ugly and stupid, while still being in the same building.

This sounds like the worst cartoon show ever made:

Ah yes. Thank you, Hanna Barbera. :^) Yeah that one was pretty bad,  but Hanna Barbera put out 10 garbage shows for every classic. :^)

Ive always been disgusted at hanna-barbara.  Their lets save money by having terrible animation was a good idea back when it wasnt big business to make animated shows, but it stopped being unprofitable decades before they stopped making terrible animation

But they DID crank out some good stuff. Yogi Bear, Snagglepuss, Pixie and Dixie, Top Cat (My personal favorite), Flinstones, Jetsons... If they'd just stayed out of the '80s and stuck to comedy, they would have been remembered much more fondly. :^)

...and Ted Turner buys up all the Hanna-Barberra rights, and the madness continues...

Top Cat is good but the show it ripped off, Sgt Bilko, is much better.
