Title: Re: HBO's The Wire Rewatch on DirecTV
Post by: Kete on June 13, 2011, 08:53:13 AM
I'm getting really tempted to just rent the DVDs from netflix to finish this up.  It's been nice to be forced to spread it out.  The anticipation makes the show that much better, but I'm anxious to see the end.  I watched the first few seasons of Battlestar Galactica in about a month, and while I enjoyed it, it makes it all run together.  We'll see if I can hold out.

I like The Wire a lot. Didn't really care much for the first season but the second season just slayed me. You knew what would happen in the end but it was so well done that I was completely broken up. And then the end of season three? I'm sorry to say this but....

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

So I haven't seen anything after season three.

I've heard a lot of people say that Season 4 is their favorite.  I really like it, but I can't say that I like one season more than another.

I really do need to watch the rest of it. It's just the one-two punch of seasons two and three knocked me so hard that I felt like I had to take a breather. Maybe now I can handle it again.

I'm not catching this on DirecTV, but I have been watching it on Netflix.  I got so hooked that I upgraded my membership from one at a time to two at a time so I wouldn't have to wait so long.

I just finished season 4.  I didn't much like it.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

You do get a feel for much more authenticity in this show than other cop shows.  For one, it's none of this CSI crap of finding microfibers and blood particles and reflections of suspects in a man's eyes on a photo taken at the crime scene, then chasing down every possible lead to make double super extra certain that you got the right guy.  It seems more true to what I've heard, that the cops get these homicides and just groan and want to get them solved in any way possible as fast as possible.

I have a feeling that there are about to be a lot of killing coming up soon.

Seasons 2 and 3 are probably my favorites, however I kind of like it as one whole big series.  Lester Freamon is made of 100% pure awesome.

I'm having trouble figuring out what the ranks in the Baltimore PD stand for.  I guess Sergeant > Lieutenant > Major > Colonel?  Majors seem to be like Captains, overseeing an entire precinct.  What does a Colonel oversee?

Seasons 4 and 5 are even bigger downers.  Some of the school stories were cool, particularly the one with WeeBay's son and Bunny Colvin.  I hate the story arc for Thomas Carcetti.  I've come to hate him more than anyone in the Barksdale organization.

Thomas Carcetti seems like one of the good guys.   Things must really go crazy for him the rest of season 4 and in season 5.

The next few weeks should be fun.

That's the way it seems to the characters in the show too.  That's the strength of the writing, directing, and acting.  You get sucked into this world and forget that you're a passive viewer of a fictional land.

And I can see why Herc is concerned about his CI Fuzzy Dunlap.

I seem to remember that the season 4 closing was pretty disappointing.  The wrap-up of the plotline with Wee-bay's son is nice though.  I think that the fat sergeant in charge of the homicide unit has a somewhat heartwarming moment too.

First off, I love the guy that plays Clay "sheeeeet" Davis!

I really like how each season takes a look at various parts of Baltimore besides just the police

Season 1:   The war on drugs at the street level
Season 2:   The shipping and port crimes
Season 3:   Drugs at the higher up level
Season 4:   Politics and the Schools
Season 5:   The newspaper industry

I have a strong feeling that the reporter who made up the story about the wheel chair kid at the game is gonna take a big fall soon.

The newspaper editor is probably a LOT like David Simon is himself.

McNutly seems to have lost his mind.

Ned Stark is too honorable to run the corners.  If anything, he'd be a murder police.

Also I just started rewatching the show from the beginning on the HBOGO.  I'm on episode 3.

I just saw this story and thought it was weird.  The actress who played Marlo's enforcer "Snoop", was on trial for drug charges (http://news.yahoo.com/wire-actress-pleads-guilty-drug-case-213134099.html).  I guess nobody told her it was just a TV show?

Quote
BALTIMORE (AP) — An actress who played a Baltimore drug gang assassin in HBO's "The Wire" pleaded guilty Monday to conspiring to distribute heroin, caught by a wiretap in a joint federal-state drug probe of an alleged drug gang.

Felicia "Snoop" Pearson, 31, pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute heroin, a day before her trial was set to begin. Judge Lawrence Fletcher-Hill accepted the plea, suspending a seven-year sentence with credit for time served and ordering three years of supervised probation with provisions for out-of-state travel for work.

The plea allows Pearson to move on with her acting career, instead of spending more than a year with charges hanging over her, attorney Benjamin C. Sutley said outside the courthouse.

"I can't say she would have been found not guilty," Sutley said. But Pearson interrupted, saying "I would have been found not guilty."

Pearson was one of 64 people charged in March in "Operation Usual Suspects." The federal indictment states that since 2008, members of the conspiracy bought heroin from New York and marijuana from California and sold the drugs on the streets of Baltimore. As part of the conspiracy, the indictment alleges, members discussed how those who failed to perform required tasks were dealt with violently.

Pearson was caught on a wiretap conspiring with Shawn Johnson and Jeff Gibbs, who bought heroin in bulk from New York and distributed the drugs in Baltimore, according to a statement of charges read aloud in court by prosecutor Rebecca Finn. Johnson paid Pearson to store drugs and money, including drug proceeds, at her apartment in the city, Finn said.

When another member of the alleged conspiracy was kidnapped by rival dealers, Johnson told him to go to Pearson's apartment to get money pay a ransom, Finn said. Police interrupted the abduction outside Pearson's apartment and found heroin in the abducted man's car, she said. Informants also told investigators that Pearson occasionally sold heroin for Johnson, Finn said.

Some of the people involved in the wider case helped take care of Pearson when she was a teen, but she has now "learned a valuable lesson about how some loyalties you keep and others drag you down," Sutley said.

Pearson said she knows everyone in Baltimore. Asked how she'll avoid falling into the same situation in the future, Pearson said, "I'm moving to L.A."

Pearson, who wore retro-style glasses with a black-and-white checked shirt and a red paisley bow tie to court, said she is working on two movies. She later updated her followers on Twitter, "I'm FREE."

"The Wire," which ran from 2002 to 2008, was filmed in Baltimore and put a spotlight on the city's struggle with poverty and drug violence through the stories of the city's police, drug organizations, schools, politicians and media. Pearson's character, which shares the nickname "Snoop," knocks off several people for the fictitious Stanfield drug gang.

This was not Pearson's first brush with the law. She was convicted of second-degree murder in a slaying committed when she was 14. She served five years of an eight-year sentence and was released in 2000. Pearson was arrested on a minor drug charge in 2008 when police went to her home to pick her up for refusing to cooperate as a witness in a murder trial. She was found not guilty.

So far, I have managed to avoid the major spoilers.   My brother in law said one right away as soon as I said I had never watched it and was going to see 50 episodes n 50 weeks on DirecTV.   BOOM, he then blurts out a spoiler that has not happened yet.   But I am sure that is not the major surprise.

3 episodes left and I do not see how McNulty is going to pull this off.

Each episode he seems to be getting deeper and deeper in trouble.  I don't understand how he expects to "solve" the serial killer.  Will he produce a killer, or will he try to convince everyone that the killer is finished?

I really hope that reporter takes a fall.  I'm glad that McNulty is messing with him.

I can't wait for you guys to see the last episode.  I really like what they do with Bubbles.  He's been on one huge story arc spanning the entire series, and it wraps up in a very happy way.  It dovetails with Dukie's story in a rather brilliant way, even though neither of the two characters ever interact.

This should be obvious, but you probably don't want to click that spoiler tag.
