Title: Happy Town
Post by: Bob on April 28, 2010, 08:29:40 PM
FINALLY..... someone does a series premier correctly!

I guess this is the show that ABC is hoping that will replace LOST in their lineup.    Anyway, I LOVED the premier.   Cast full of really good character actors, mystery introduced, hints at character back stories, really weird stuff, hints at characters you might actually care about.    Well done.

And the lovely Amy Acker...... SIGH.

And, all of a sudden, I might actually watch this show.

Wasn't bad.  It doesn't look like it'll last very long, so hopefully it'll get a chance to wrap up.

I loved it as well!  Great writing (with one exception I'll get to below) and great casting.  A lot of great name actors in this and they all came to play.  The mysteries developed nicely.

I just wish the exposition hadn't been so forced.  That scene with the husband and wife and kid at the dinner table where the husband recapped their entire lives was totally painful.  "As you know, Bob, I've been posting here at Rifftrax for several years.  And as you know, Bob, I've done a couple Iriffs and I'm an indie filmmaker.  And as I know, Bob, you've got some kind of job where you take a lot of boring meetings and you're an all around cool guy.  And as you know Bob ..."

What the hell is THAT?  LMFAO

Fortunately, we only see it that bad in series pilots.  It's really hard to tell the audience what the hell is going on without that painful shit unless you use narration.  And if you use narration you're locked into that for the entire series.  But hopefully that's behind us now because I like the series.

It really does make me think of Twin Peaks.  I kept waiting for Laura Palmer to turn up dead.  If they want to go that route, I sure hope they can deliver.

It did me too.   Of course, any movie or show set in that part of the country remind me of Twin Peaks.

I loved the CGE that showed the Bread Factory just LOOMING over the town like something from a Stephen King book.

It made me think of the lumber mill from Twin Peaks.

You know what they should do?  Get Zooey Deschanel on the show and give her an eye patch. (in case you didn't know, that lady from TP is Zooey's mom).

Ditto on the Twin Peaks vibe.  I really enjoyed it too.  I liked how the young girl who arrived in town seemed all sweet and innocent at first but as the show went on we saw that wasn't the case. I really liked her scene with Sam Elliott in the store.  Hopefully the show will continue to intrigue.

I just received a call from the "american grizzled board" and they have asked me to ask you to stop referring to Sam Neill as Sam Elliot.

Cool.  I forgot to watch this, though the commercials were intriguing.  Based on this discussion, I think I'll go see if it's on Hulu or abc.com.

oops.  Funny.  I just watched the Jurassic Park Rifftrax with a few other folks and I think I called him Sam Elliot then too.  The funny part is that nobody corrected me.  I was the oldest person in the room so maybe nobody else knew his name.

I am so glad I'm not the only one who actually likes this show.  I also don't see it lasting though, which sucks... but I blame the promotion for that.  They really seemed to push it as if it was gonna be some big horror show, like an attempt at grabbing the Supernatural fanbase.  I honestly had NO idea what to expect when I watched it, but I was quite pleased.  I have been telling people that it's "as if Twin Peaks was made by Stephen King instead of David Lynch"

The production of it reminds me a lot of Point Pleasant, which is another show I was pissed when it was cancelled.

Anyways, if they push it better and actually promote it properly, I think it could do okay... but if not, then I can easily see it being cancelled... which would be a shame.

It's basically an updated version of Twin Peaks.  I'm sorry, but I can't explain what Twin Peaks is.

Very nice second episode!

I guess I just realized the guy who plays "Big Dave" is the same guy who played the red-headed troll in Buffy.

LOVED the filming of the last scene with the music playing, and the hawk just gliding to the camera and out of frame..... wonderfully shot.

The scene with Dr. Grant dancing with the bed and breakfast lady really threw me into Twin Peaks flashes.... even the angle of the shot of the whole room and the way it was laid out made me think of Maddy's murder scene.  Weird.

Second week in a row with dreadful ratings.  They made a huge mistake putting this show up against American Idol results shows.

I just read on AOL that the prospect of this show lasting is slim to none.  It's looking like one of those shows that won't even be given a chance.

Yeah....because two episodes is enough for a TV show to hit its stride.  This is really stupid.  They should have just started this show on cable.

Point Pleasant was good enough to buy, even though it got cancelled prematurely.  Even got unaired episodes.  Hopefully there will be a DVD release of ALL episodes made sometime.

Horrible marketing and scheduling on ABC's part.

Much as I hate this move, you can't say ABC didn't promote the everliving HELL out of this series.  I couldn't move during an episode of Lost or V without tripping over a fucking Happy Town promo.  LOL

I'll be sad to see it go though.

They promoted the hell out of it, yes... but not WELL.  I had NO effing clue what the show was going to be until after I downloaded it and watched it.  By the teasers they kept airing, I was under the impression it would be some horror show, closer to an attempt at capitalising on the Supernatural fanbase.

Between being as ill-informative as they could be about the show, to scheduling it in a time slot where no one would really bother checking it out to see just what the hell it was (because there were other things on that people KNOW they like at that time), ABC just really screwed the pooch on this show.

That's a fair point.  For me the marketing campaign intrigued me because I literally knew nothing about the show before watching the pilot.  I didn't even know any actors who were in it.  I made the choice to go in unspoiled because the promos kept me unspoiled.

But most people aren't like me.  LOL So I think you make a good point.

My wife and I started watching the first episode last night and were really enjoying it, but about 20/30 minutes in we took a break to make a cup of tea. My wife asked who created the show, so I looked it up and saw that the show was in danger of being canceled and we turned it off. I hate getting invested in a show that gets killed before it's had a chance.

It sucks though, it seemed to have strong potential.

I worded that badly.  LOL  What I meant was, I didn't know which of the many actors in this world were in this series.  Once I started watching it, though, I immediately recognized Steven Weber, Amy Acker, the big gay guy from Lost, and Sam Neill.

So my wife just pointed this out.

The most current issue of TV Guide Magazine (June 21st - July 4th, with the 3 stars of USA shows White Collar, Royal Pains, & Burn Notice on the cover) has a listing of a new episode on Wed June 30th at 10pm.

Show description:
Possible spoiler? Not sure since I'm only on Episode 4 right now.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I sure hope that's right.  I checked the guide on the tv and it shows a repeat of Castle as of right now for that time slot.  Has anyone heard anything about them airing more episodes?

Title: Re: Happy Town
Post by: Bob on June 19, 2010, 06:25:33 PM
ABC has aired three episodes since they had the "coming later" instead of "next week on" promos before the show was listed as "not to be renewed".

My DVR autorecorded them, but I am not sure if I should watch them knowing that the show is toast.   I dont want to get even more hooked.

So, should I watch or not?

The episodes aired this month were great.  I know the show has been cancelled and we're not getting many answers, if any.  But if you enjoy good acting, snappy dialogue, and some in episode twists and turns (and if you enjoy seeing a woman beat up a raging douchebag) then you'll love the last three episodes.
