What song is on your iPod, radio, 8-track tape, or playing over the loud speaker at work right this minute?
Or what's running through your head?
As I went to start this thread my iPod started to play something from my childhood, and every portion of this is more obscure than the last: Michael Feinstein singing "The Dressing Song" (from the 5000 Fingers of Dr T, originally sung by Hans Conreid) from his album "Pure Imagination."
(f you understood any of that you get a gold star)
-
Nothing right now, but let me hit random on my MP3 player and see what pops up:
"Sharks Can't Sleep" by Tracy Bonham.
and there is a video on youtube!
http://www.youtube.com/v/aVl6ZzScxqk&hl=en_US&fs=1&
-
This is fun! (and a great way to pad your post count!)
Next up (via the random button on my Zune HD):
"Ant Rap" by Adam and the Ants

One last song for now:
"Modern Day Delilah" by KISS
http://www.youtube.com/v/VTSYBuzmmD0&hl=en_US&fs=1&
Not to be confused with this song also called "Modern Day Delilah", which some of you may remember from the '80s, by the late Van Stephenson:
http://www.youtube.com/v/CGvRrioamUc&hl=en_US&fs=1&
-
Alright, let's pick another random song:
"Head Over Feet" by Alanis Morrisette
http://www.youtube.com/v/4iuO49jbovg&hl=en_US&fs=1&
I have two stories about this song.
I saw Alanis in concert on the Jagged Little Pill tour back in 95, right at the beginning of the tour, just after You Oughta Know broke nationwide as a huge hit single. I was in the second row center for the concert. And when she sang this song, she looked at me several times. We locked eyes. It was a very special moment. :P
Also, I chose this song as a special dedication during a VH1 Classic Valentine's Day special several years ago. My dedication was picked, and Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart (who hosted the show) read my request. Which was pretty awesome.
-
Then I get to go again:
"Betrayed" from The Producers (the musical). one of my favs from that actually. Nathan Lane rocks. "Guten tag hop clop, guten tag hop clop, Adolph Elizabeth Hitler?"

Shockingly there is a clip on Youtube.

I love the '80s. ;D

Let's try this again:
"In Demand" by Texas
Fantastic song with a great video. I've already declared my infatuation with Sharleen Spiteri in another thread (whatever happened to that Celebrity Crush list of crap?)

Thank you for the Billy Swan clip, I love that song. Elvis has a awesome version too, it was one of my mom's favorite songs. On eight track. She'd play it over and over.
I had a dream last night I was in the "Oh Sherry" video. It was quite a good dream. Steve Perry in his tight jeans...yummy! So, I have been humming the song all day.

Russel Allen kinda overdoes the vocals, trying to be heavy, but it just comes off as a bit dorky. Great song, otherwise.
-
Passion Pit- Sleepyhead
I hope they actually use this in LittleBigPlanet 2, or at least the instrumental version from the trailer. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mSJvKUzyLvU) Seems like the perfect song for the game.

"Albuquerque" by Weird Al. Is it sick that I have this memorized? I love it! Every time I fly a plane I think "Everybody died! Except for me, you know why? 'Cause I had my tray table up, And my seatback in the full upright position!"
-
Right now I'm listening to this horrible song (http://vimeo.com/9164924) by Seth Avett, one half of the Avett Brothers (if you just count Seth and Scott). While I respect Seth's musical abilities (his guitar work is quite nice), his writing skills are GOD AWFUL. He actually rhymes "sad" and "bad" during the chorus in this song. Really, just awful. I'm only listening for the lulz.

-
Damn I really should sticky this somewhere shouldn't I?
*cracks knuckles* OK (this is an older set of images thew code is now found beneath the vids when you click on embed)
So look at the video on Youtube
(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb319/TripeHoundRedux/Forum%20Furniture/Embedding/embeddguide1.jpg)
See the code I've circled? That's the code you need. If you copy the whole block
(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb319/TripeHoundRedux/Forum%20Furniture/Embedding/embeddguide2.jpg)
So to save time simply copy all of the code and paste it in the message here then prune (it's much less fiddly I find).
Then you come to the forum and click to post something new which will provide you with the tool bar
(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb319/TripeHoundRedux/Forum%20Furniture/Embedding/embeddguide3.jpg)
You want the one I've circled
Which will get you this code
(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb319/TripeHoundRedux/Forum%20Furniture/Embedding/embeddguide4.jpg)
You then put the bit of code you have pruned from Youtube embed code between the brackets like so
(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb319/TripeHoundRedux/Forum%20Furniture/Embedding/embeddguide5.jpg)
The last step is to re-size the video from the default provided by the forum code*, like so
(http://i204.photobucket.com/albums/bb319/TripeHoundRedux/Forum%20Furniture/Embedding/embeddguide5a.jpg)
Test it out and see if that works for you, we can walk through any probs you might encounter. :)
I should maybe ask Erik to alter that since it's mostly YT vids that it's used for.
-
And since I recently did some work for the ex of one of these two lovely ladies:

Have you considered using Grooveshark? I find more music I'm looking for there, and for music discussions, I don't generally feel a pressing need to have video.

My favorite "black power / down with whitey" track from back in the day, before popular hip hop was overtaken by mostly dance rap tripe. A brilliant job of sampling a few seconds of guitar work from The Rolling Stones drives the backing track... with about another half dozen songs are sampled to build an impressively unique instrumental. A shame that a year or two after this track was recorded, various lawsuits would make such dense sampling too expensive.

"Bless the Weather" by John Martyn. I'd call it "morning music," but it's not morning right now. No matter - it's a great song from the man who arguably perfected jazz folk.

Weird Al does a Lady Gaga parody, finally!
BUT! Gaga did not give Weird Al permission to release it commercially, despite the fact that he went through the trouble of recording it beforehand so she could make her decision after having heard it and the proceeds going to the Human Rights Campaign (he will be allowing a free download of it soon, though).
Here's Weird Al's take on the situation:

Weird Al and Lady Gaga are actually very similar in the sense that the visuals are a big part of their shtick... Al's videos are probably a bigger part of his success then the lyrics anyways... and I get a feeling that Gaga didn't want a video made. Granted, it was pretty shitty that she insisted the song be recorded only to not give her approval. At this point in his career, he should make an exception to his personal rules and just press ahead. She can't sue and I doubt Al is going to lose any credibility anyways. Coolio came out and gave him some shit after the Amish Paradise video hit... and Al has been rolling along fine for the last 15 years since that... do what is best for him and his fans... make the video... donate some money to charity... everybody has a laugh.
-
I've been listening to this song so many times. Weird Al is awesome!
-
I like the song. Too bad there won't be a video, it would have been epic! I particularly like how many of the lyrics actually fit with describing Wierd Al.
-
The Wanderer - U2 and Johnny Cash (it's mostly a Cash song, he's on vocals, but with 90s U2 experimental sounds)

Don't bawl your eyes out just yet!
http://alyankovic.wordpress.com/2011/04/20/gaga-update/
Apparently, it was Gaga's manager who said "no", and not Gaga herself (she had not even heard the song when the announcement was made). She has since given her permission for the song to be included on Weird Al's next album (yay) and for a music video to be made! Of course, Weird Al is sticking to his guns and will give the proceeds of the song to charity.
This story sounds iffy to me, but I'm not going to assume anything (especially not that Ms. Gaga only changed her mind after somebody told her about "Like A Surgeon", or changed her mind to avoid negative publicity, or just wanted to stay in the spotlight for as long as possible because she's a special little snowflake) because you're not supposed to look a gift horse in the mouth, or something.
So woohoo!

After hearing about the new Commodore being released, I stumbled upon this pure nostalgia trip for old school C64 owners. The Commodore 64 sound chip could only reproduce three voices at any given moment, but thanks to some truly talented composers pushing things to the limit, many of the C64 songs sounded much more dense than that... This one has always been one of my favorites.... and considering it's about 25 years old and might take up 3k worth of memory.... it's still an impressive little track.

Have to include a hands-down favorite...a more obscure title called "Master of Magic." Seven minutes of pure awesome (at least, seven minutes played at what I consider the proper NTSC speed...never understood why PAL C-64 was slower but PAL movies played faster). This cuts off rather nastily at the end instead of running the full course, but it's enough.

Just what I was afraid of. I was pretty into it right up until the point when the singer kicked in. For chrissakes, do these guys gargle with glass?!? I've heard worse, but this singing style ruins the music for me. And that one "fast" drumbeat is just unimaginative and boring. Play with some rythm; you're obviously capable of it.

I am not a fan of Opeth in the slightest. In the past they have alternated with a couple other groups as being my absolute most overrated metal band on the planet...but god damn. This new song is REALLY freaking good and really freaking different. If you actually are a fan of their other material you might want to skip this one. No growling, and heavy 70's prog/psychedelic influence (goes with the cover art nicely.) I can honestly say that, for the first time ever, I'm looking forward to a new Opeth album.

Oh man, do we need that now.
-
Truly though, if you want parallels, the closer one is pre revolutionary France around the time of the Estates-General of 1789. Not saying things are going to go that way, but really, we're nowhere near the situation that lead to Thermidor. Just consider that for a minute.

I've been listening to The Human Equation by Arjen Lucassen's Ayreon a lot recently. I've owned the album for several years, but I never really got into it until just recently. Lucassen writes these rock/metal operas and he gets various singers, mostly metal singers, to perform in them. It's mostly metal and rock, but there's a whole crap load of other stuff thrown in too. THE is probably the best one. It's about a guy who was in a car wreck and, while in a coma, various aspects of his personality talk to him and help him reconcile his issues. It's very good. Here are my two favorite songs from it, Day 11-Love and Day 16-Loser.
There are quite a few well known vocalists in this (well known if you're into metal that is), such as James Labrie of Dream Theater and Mikael Akerfeldt of Opeth. It's a shame neither of these songs include Reason, played by Eric Clayton of Savior Machine. He has a very distinctive voice.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, this version of Loser is slightly different than what's on the album. The intro is shorter and the solo section is completely different. The vocals are exactly the same though. I prefer this version, which is why I posted it.

That actually wasn't nearly as bad as I expected, though it's not the sort of music I would listen to normally (neither is Russian Unicorn for that matter). And I think it's cool that he actually took the time to make a video praising this parody.
Speaking of which, Russian Unicorn is irritatingly catchy.

Present Tense by Pearl Jam
I cannot embed the youtube video, but I can provide the lyrics. I put the most inspirational part in bold
Do you see the way that tree bends?
Does it inspire?
Leanin' out to catch the sun's ray
A lesson to be applied
Are you getting something out of this?
All encompassing trip
You can spend your time alone
Redigesting past regrets, Oh
Or you can, come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, Oh
Makes much more sense to live in the present tense
Have you ideas on how this life ends?
Checked your hands and studied the lines?
Have you the belief that the road ahead
Ascends off into the light?
Seems that needlessly it's gettin' harder
To find an approach and a way to live
Are we gettin' something out of this
All encompassing trip
You can spend your time alone
Redigesting past regrets, Oh
Or you can come to terms and realize
You're the only one who cannot forgive yourself, Oh
Ah, makes much more sense to live in the present tense
-
Did I kill this thread? If so I am sorry.
And I am also sorry to add that I am currently listening to the following coldplay song over and over (because I can and because I want to so naw)
Every Teardrop is a Waterfall by Coldplay
I turn the music up, I got my records on
I shut the world outside until the lights come on
Maybe the streets alight, maybe the trees are gone
I feel my heart start beating to my favorite song
And all the kids they dance, all the kids all night
Until Monday morning feels another life
I turn the music up
I'm on a roll this time
And heaven is in sight
I turn the music up, I got my records on
From underneath the rubble sing a rebel song
Don't want to see another generation drop
I'd rather be a comma than a full stop
Maybe I'm in the black, maybe I'm on my knees
Maybe I'm in the gap between the two trapezes
But my heart is beating and my pulses start
Cathedrals in my heart
As we saw oh this light I swear you, emerge blinking into
To tell me it's alright
As we soar walls, every siren is a symphony
And every tear's a waterfall
Is a waterfall
Oh
Is a waterfall
Oh oh oh
Is a is a waterfall
Every tear
Is a waterfall
Oh oh oh
So you can hurt, hurt me bad
But still I'll raise the flag
Oh
It was a wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall
A wa wa wa wa wa-aterfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall
Every tear
Every tear
Every teardrop is a waterfall

APGIL downloaded American IV last week and I've listened to it a few times. It's an amazing end-of-life album -- a man reflecting on his life and facing his mortality, which, for Johnny Cash, came the year after this album was released. I love this song, partly because it's an American standard, partly because of the great piano in it, and partly because it feels like Johnny Cash has put himself in the place of the young cowboy and he's asking us to remember him well. The emotion in his voice is beautiful and moving.

Off topic, but...
When did the radio start editing classic songs? They've changed Janie's Got a Gun, the part where she put a bullet in his brain.
They also took out the part about the faggot in Money for nothing. When he sings about a faggot, he doesn't mean a gay man. I know a lot of straight people who can be faggots.
I hear Pumped Up Kicks and they took out every gun.
And then the clincher, they took out dribble off those Bobbie Brooks, etc out of Jack and Diane
WTF?
-
I have heard Money For Nothing edited since it came out. Really depends on the station. Some play the original some play the edits.
New Melvins EP and video came out today. The EP is a free download too!

The completely re-recorded version of "And Then There Was Silence", probably the single best rock/metal song since Bohemian Rhapsody. The original version was great, but the production was piss poor. This version is much clearer.

Damn Jones, you don't mess around when it comes to metal. That's some serious top-of-the-fire-mountain, bare-chested, wind-blown-hair, kings of metal shit right there.

One of my favorite SCTV sketches is "South Sea Sinner" with Betty Thomas. Paul Revere has sunk to playing keyboards at Cognac's Bottom of the Barrel Club. Fuckin' classic.
Here's another painfully-underrated band that broke up before they really had a chance. Thankfully, the did manage to make one great album before everything went to hell. Bands don't do near enough vocal harmonizing like this.

What do you get when you combine 70's disco with modern folk metal? If you said "garbage", you'd probably be right nine times out of ten. However Turisas somehow makes it work.
This is a cover of the song 'Rasputin', by Boney M, as performed by the Finnish metal band Turisas. Now, before any of you simply skip over this because it's a metal band playing a disco song, I urge you to check it out. It's only four minutes of your life, and it's surprisingly good.
It's also irritatingly catchy... :P

Hole are the worst. Judy Collins' version is okay, but Joni Mitchell always makes her songs sound so...personal, that even a decent rendering doesn't really compare.

Do you know why Joni was able to bring that quality to her singing? It's a story that's sad then nice as long as you end it with the reunion, it just gets really sad again after that.
-
if you play all those videos simultaneously, a dozen paradises suddenly get paved over. :(
-
I love that Bing Crosby video. He just does not give a shit about the song he's singing.
Although it's probably because he's absolutely hammered and barely able to remember the words, let alone care about them.
I'd heard most of the others - the Andy Williams one isn't so terrible - but I didn't want to post too many examples, ruining the original forever.
Besides, have you heard Chris de Burgh cover Elvis Presley's In the Ghetto?

Ever since the musicals idea was suggested for the List of Crap, I've been obsessed with musicals. As a result, I ran across this. Mean Green Mother from Little Shop of Horrors. This was added to the musical version when it was made into a movie, and was nominated for an Oscar. Unfortunately it's usually left out of the stage production. This one was done as an encore.
This song is notoriously difficult to perform live, and this is the only production I've seen that does the late great Levi Stubbs justice.

Fleet Foxes has been around for at least a few years now, but I'm late to the party. My loss, because I am really enjoying their self-titled album. It's a very good winter album, I think. I can hear the connection to the earth and the seasons, the animals and the people. "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" is probably the best known from the album, but they're all pretty delicious.

I've recently discovered the joys of Slacker radio. At the risk of sounding like an advertisement, I love that you can make custom stations. If you want, it will randomly interjects songs similar to ones tagged as favorites. I've re-discovered New Wave and Punk tracks I haven't heard since...well...the 80s. I present to you:

Listening to some great music to prepare for the List of Crap: Top 50 Cover Songs. I urge everyone to take part and make a list of their 25 favourite cover songs and send them to Sicgirl by the 3rd.
However, since if I put one of the covers here, it might be a bit of a cheat to influence others, I'll go another way: 2 awesome sequel songs.
First, here's David Bowie's sequel song to Space Oddity. Not as good as that, but still way great.

Just listened that while playing the original Tomb Raider on the PC... it was a little bit surreal... And hey, if I was worth millions of kid actor dollars, I'd probably sit around, get stoned with some friends and sing about pizza too.
As far as what I was listening too before pizza-themed cover songs... Well, normally I don't seek out indie hip-hop from white dudes... But I stumbled upon this one last week after Space v2.0 posted a different video from Hoodie Allen. This beat / chorus has been stuck in my head ever since... And the second verse has a reference to the old Oregon Trail video game that gave me a chuckle.

And then I come across this ... :o
http://www.youtube.com/v/WIKqgE4BwAY#t=135
Japanese teen pop meets death metal in an explosion of awesome
In an age when nearly every song ever recorded is available at a moment’s notice, it’s easy to get cynical about music. Everything’s been done before and we have a never-ending Spotify playlist to prove it.
Flying in from Japan like a flaming battle axe covered in glitter and bubble gum is Babymetal, a band whose pitch-perfect execution of an absolutely insane concept has the potential to instantly banish any thoughts of ‟it's all been done” from your brain.
The premise behind Babymetal is simple: Take a trio of Japanese teen girl pop stars, choreographed dance moves and all, and have them sing over hard-charging death metal riffs. Even the band’s name is a reference to the idea’s gonzo novelty. "We want to be the only one in the world," singer Su-Metal said in an interview with Razor TV. "We use the 'Baby' because we are newborn, a new genre."
The band released its debut, eponymous full-length album last month. Check out the music video for the album's first single, entitled, ‟Give Me Choco!”
Things of note: 1) The chorus on this song is nefariously catchy; 2) This may be the best metal song ever written about how awesome it is to eat chocolate; 3) The people playing their backing music are dressed as skeletons; 4) If you show this to an actual metalhead, he or she will never forgive you.
As one Jezebel commenter wrote in response to a post about the video, "Somewhere in Norway there is a metalhead in corpse paint standing in a forest crying tears of blood.”
People who really love teen pop will probably feel the same way. But, for those of us whose musical tastes fall somewhere in the middle, Babymetal is kind of like a magical, leather-clad, fire-breathing, sonic unicorn. In fact, lots of people have a soft spot for Babymetal. The band currently has the number two best-selling album in the iTunes store.
Babymetal, japanse, teen pop, metal
The three band members, whose ages range from 14 to 16, formed the group as an offshoot of ‟idol” group Sakura Gakuin, whose music sounds a lot closer to the standard electronic pop music that dominates charts around the world. "Before joining this band, all of us, including our parents, didn't know what metal music was,” band member Moametal told Razor TV.

For a brief moment in 1991, funk metal was going to be the next big thing. Well, it was going to be at least a thing... as a few bands got some airtime during the last 15 minutes of a few Headbanger's Ball episodes... But alas it was not to be. Nirvana and Pearl Jam came along... everybody started wearing flannel shirts... and for the most part, 90s rock was decidedly grungy and unfunky.
Still, the now completely obscure band Mordred did release one really solid album. They had a poor man's version of Flea on bass, a poor man's version of Mike Patton on vocals, a poor man's version of Metallica on guitars and drums... and a genuine hip-hop DJ providing turntable work. This apparent clusterfuck actually worked for the most part and this CD lived for many, many moons in my car's CD wallet.

Yes. I did like it. I've always enjoyed Gwars kind of outlandish, dare I say ostentatious style? You gotta admire a band who wears all that stuff every time they go out on stage. Also, it takes a real man to wear a prosthetic cow udder on his crotch. ;D

Was just listening to Freddie Mercury's first solo album "Mister Bad Guy" the other day. I always dug that album. I managed to get a hold of it in 2000 when I got onto Ebay and managed to order the CD. Back then I was amazed because I realized how the world was such a wonderful place now that the world was totally connected. Then I look back and realize maybe I was a little too premature in my assessment.

So Symphony X has released a new album, "Underworld". This is Swan Song, my current favorite. Many people have complained that the band just hasn't been the same after "The Odyssey". And they're right. I liked "Paradise Lost", but "Iconoclast" was just too much of the same. This album though is much more varied, and closer to their older stuff. Not as much as I would like, but it's still Symphony X for Christ's sake. I don't think they're actually capable of making bad music.

Goldfrapp released their next album, Silver Eye, this past March. I want the CD of it, but at the moment the whole album is pretty much available on her Youtube channel, so I'm listening to it while I'm waiting to nab the real thing. (And on the band's channel...I support monetizing the real artist, not the 50 people who nab it when it's readily available from the source.)
It's both exactly what you'd expect, and different from the other albums in a lot of ways. Not quite as heavy or as over the top as Black Cherry, not as light as Seventh Tree, but probably closest to both of them in sound. Some synthy stuff in some of the songs reminds me a lot of the old Amiga sound chip, which doesn't hurt, either.

So it's a little-known fact that Castlevania 3 has a slightly different soundtrack in Japan than it did in the states. Japan's version could play more instruments at the same time, while America's version had a cleaner, less distorted sound. So someone mixed the audio from both to create this, to get the best of both worlds. If you've heard the Castlevania 3 soundtrack a jillion times, give it a listen. It's pretty amazing to hear the subtle transformation.

That's great and all Pak, but Symphony of the night, Dawn of Sorrow and Portrait of Ruin have the best soundtracks in all of Castlevania. Oh yeah and Castlevania: Curse of Darkness has a pretty sweet soundtrack too. Not to mention Vomitron covered the soundtrack to Castlevania 2... which was definitely by far the best thing about that game.
-
Heck yeah. Castlevania is right up there with Mega Man and Zelda when it comes to series that ALWAYS have an awesome soundtrack. Super Castlevania IV might be my personal favorite, actually. I love early Super Nintendo music. There was this sense of, "Look at all of these special effects we can add to our music! Turn them ALL on!"

So because I'm THAT much of a Weird Al fan, I listened to the Hamilton soundtrack while I worked today. I enjoyed it more than I expected to enjoy a hip-hop historical musical. The songs are surprisingly not irritating, the story is surprisingly compelling, and it's pretty darned clever. I get the hype. Not gonna rush out and spend a fortune on Broadway tickets or anything, but I don't regret it.
