Title: I just got some Pizza Rolls in the mail...
Post by: Steve-O on April 04, 2010, 11:37:14 PM
...which must mean that it's time for Red Letter Media's Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones review!

And -- holy crap! -- it's even longer than the last one!

I haven't checked it out yet, but once I have an hour-and-a-half to kill, I expect to be highly amused.

I've got to hand it to Rifftrax and Red Letter Media.  I never thought I could have gotten so much entertainment out of those prequels.  And in the case of Red Letter Media I'm also getting plenty of mileage out of those four Star Trek TNG movies.  I'm looking forward to Plinkett's review of Revenge of the Sith.

Watched up through pt 5 so far. God i love this stuff. So much win. I love the dark humor of the character of Plickett. I'm loving the "That's what he said.." girls. Hilarious.

one thing missing is this needs a "What is wrong with your face.." type running gag line.

But he is again so right on the money. Especially the whole assassination part and the asinine love story by two people who have nothing in common yet fall in love in days even when is a total turn off to women.

Now I gotta get pizza rolls atthe grocery to celebrate Plickett.

Watched this last night and was laughing pretty much nonstop. Loved how he tore apart this movie's use of Yoda.

I would like it better if he wasn't doing a blatant ripoff of the "Kissel" character's voice from the Jerky Boys.

I'm glad I downloaded copies to my hard drive!  I read through the comments on their user page and it's doubtful CN had anything to do with it.  Apparently there's a fella on youtube who downloads popular clips, uploads them to his own account, and then files a copyright claim against the original uploader so as to get their clip disabled and direct traffic to his account.

Before I started watching this, I confused it with that Chuck Norris movie Top Dog. Which was about a cop dog (or so the trailers led me to believe).

Btw, is it just me or does the Cop Dog font to the left of the frame look awfully similar to the Rifftrax font?

Maybe yes, maybe no, anything is possible!

Do you want to know where they got the idea for Cop Dog? It was when Marge Simpson
said "Ummm..... how about GHOST MUTT?" as an idea for a TV show. Thanks a lot, MARGE!

His reviews are good, but frankly I wish he'd stick to the movie commentary. The host segments aren't that funny.

Also, frankly, I have little patience for Crystal Skull hate.

I guess that makes me a right angle, as I'm pretty indifferent one way or the other. It was neither a soul-crushing letdown nor was it on par with the first 3.

So, was the end of Plinkett's review supposed to hint that Crystal Skull would be his next target?

While we're on Plinkett, anyone else find his review of Star Trek (2009) to be a bit too kind? Particularly in relation to his much harsher (albeit still quite funny) assessment of First Contact. Though, I thought the whole world was too kind to Star Trek (2009).

And when is Spielberg going to stop mentoring JJ Abrams & Michael Bay and be a Filmmaker again?

No, Star Trek 2009 was a fucking masterpiece. I have literally annihilated planets over
arguments on that movie. Please do NOT get me started because for every complaint there is,
I have a carefully constructed counter-argument.

Spielberg, directing again??? I don't think so, Spielberg is getting too old to direct movies anymore!
Hence the reason why he is producer. It's a much cushier job. George Lucas has turned his directing
job into a very cushy one by filming every goddamn scene of his films indoors in shot/reverse shot,
while sipping on his coffee like the lazy asshole that he is. Props to Plinkett for pointing out the fairly
obvious.

Okay! Ahem.... WHO GIVES A FUCK? There.

I did hear a lot of people annoyed by the color black in the movie.
Doesn't the color black annoy the hell out of you? I just wish they'd
take that fucking black out of the movie! I mean why so much black?
I mean it's like how much more black can you get in this movie in
space? And the answer is none, none more black.

Oh, and weren't you ALL just annoyed to hell because there are so
many eyes in the film? I mean everybody has two eyes! How come
so many eyes in the movie! It's annoying! Stop it!

And why does there have to be CGI in a Star Trek movie??? Okay,
bad example..

To make things unpredictable and therefore a hell of a lot more interesting.
TOS was where Star Trek was the most meaningful and profound(well, DS9
was too though).

Not the best argument in favour of lens flare to be honest sine it isn't really its presence per se that people object to but its inexplicable overuse. A flare from a light source can be a very cool effect providing there is a explicable origin for said flare (a door opening into a darkened room for example). In Abams case he tends to slap it all over even in scenes featurinig soft and diffused lighting as is the case with the interior of the enterprise, which makes it look like sloppy work by the DP.

So given that, try again.

Okay... Lens flare. The argument of overuse is rather silly to me because it has
no bearing on the characters, story or overall quality of the film as a work of
science fiction. I guess if I were to make an argument for the Lens Flare, it would
be that Lens flare is supposedly proven to stimulate ones optic nerve, triggering
constant stimulation of the pre-frontal cortex. Yes, a theory, perhaps not a sound
one, but one that I like, and one that I am sticking with.

Also, it doesn't bother me at all. It never did! It's not like JJ has gotten in front of
the camera and is brandishing Jar Jar binks in front of me. Outer space in film
whether you like it or not is going to be glamorized. With few exceptions
in the history of film and TV, it always has been! What's wrong with that? I don't see
a problem.

But they didn't, they created an alternate universe, something that's been established in Star Trek for a long time.

You know the voice is a character & not the guy's real voice, right? I remember the first time I tried to watch a Red Letter Media review I was like "I don't want to listen to this guy's voice for an hour". It became much funnier for me after I read up on the "Plinkett mythos" & found out what the whole deal was after his epic dissection of Revenge of the Sith. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Plinkett#Mr._Plinkett_character (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Plinkett#Mr._Plinkett_character)

*Shrugs* I thought it was overpraised. That's as passionate & detailed as I'll get. I don't care enough about this movie to get worked up over it. I think it's kind of funny that I inadvertently kicked up such a ruckus, though. One "meh" goes a long way.

There's no retirement age for directors. Look at Clint Eastwood, Robert Altman, John Huston. The only true retirement is death.

Chill out, man, everything's cool. Dial down the passion a bit & don't take things so personally. You like a movie that I think is wildly overpraised. End of story. Can you live with that?

Nope you still didn't address my point. :) The cortextual based information explains why explcable lens flair works as an effect.  Look the thing I explained in my post isn't something that most people realze, they just find the inexplicable flares bothersome. And sayng "I don't care about that" isn't really any sort of argument. :)

That's ok but it does rather show that your claim to be able to defend every element was a bit gradiose really :)

Oh lord... Look, the thing is I just don't see it! I mean the way I look at it is that it's some sort
of wild overanalysis. And I thought I did answer it. It's a way of glamorizing outer space to the
common man who is not used to exploring it... in my opinion. nothing wrong with that! I've always
been in favor of the "if you've got it, flaunt it" argument, and even then I agree something like that
shouldn't be overused  Perhaps I should restate, I have an answer for every fairly REASONABLE
complaint. Complaining about the lens flare IMHO is not reasonable. Use of lens flare is a purely ARTISTIC
decision.

Title: Re: I just got some Pizza Rolls in the mail...

A production be it on stage or on screen is made up of every element not just the narrative and peformance ones, and that's always been the case. So it's perfectly reasonable to criticize and analyse the technical elements of any given production.

An element being an artistic choice doesn't immunise it from criticism either. Elements either help the production or they don't.  For many people the extent of the lens flare was a hinderance to their appreciation of the production.

It's OK that you aren't able to answwer the criticism (despite it being a fairly common complaint) but to say "oh that's just nothing and it's unreasonable to complain about it" is intellectually dishonest and a rather weak response given that you claimed to be able to argue against every criticism

No biggie really. :)

It looks out of place and stupid in Star Trek VI, but you hardly notice

natural, in my opinion.

No, it was not silly. Lens Flare is a movie technique that glamorizes the cold dark of
outer space and the Enterprise, and in my opinion was necessary to the frenetic
amount of action going on.

No, swans exist because in this universe swans are a cross breed of chickens and ducks.
No.

Yeah, they are.  Also, when they fart there is a severe lens flare.

Okay, Crystal Skull, what do you want to bet Plinkett's opening line will be
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is the most disappointing
thing since Crystal Pepsi?

Ummm... anyone going to respond? I mean Jesus it's like as soon as my

Curious if we'll get another "George Lucas" cameo thanks to the Crystal Skull review.

Also, anyone else checking out the "Half in the Bag" series? If you haven't it's also on the Red Letter Media site and it's a review show starring "Plinkett's VCR repairmen" one of whom is the guy behind Plinkett out of character. (you can tell it's him easily, even without him playing up the character.  It's about as much of an exaggeration as Dr Teeth was for Jim Hebson)

I've watched a handful so far, my favorite being the 'fake' Zookeeper trailer episode. I really like how the guys two play off each other. Aside from the Zookeeper ep, the reviews seem completely unscripted and off-the-cuff, at least from what I've seen so far. The reviews are insightful in addition to being funny. I think that's why I prefer Spoony over TGWTG. A lot of the time, TGWTG's reviews are a little too shticky for me.

I guess Happy Madison can't understand that nobody wants to see this movie and they are better
off saving some dignity by relegating it to a direct-to-dvd release?

Slightly OT, but I'm reminded of the time I saw Punch Drunk Love in the theater. It was obvious that most of the audience thought it was going to be like a Happy Madison production. They laughed their asses off at the preview for The Hot Chick, especially this elderly couple a few rows in front of me. But once the film started, the audience gave off such a collective level of squirm-inducing discomfort & bewilderment that I've never experienced before or since. I couldn't help but notice the back of the head of this old woman who'd laughed at The Hot Chick repeatedly turning to her husband, as if they were duped into watching a porno or something (that was the expression: "this is a sick movie").

What befuddled me was that most of the audience were adults & some senior citizens, and they were the ones guffawing at The Hot Chick. Not kids. Senior citizens were guffawing at Rob Schneider's antics. I found it dismaying. "Is this what's considered 'keeping up with the times'?" But at least I gained a whole new level of appreciation for my grandparents, who have a generally respectable taste in films (as in, they're not cinephiles but they don't watch stupid shit; Basically they'll watch a movie if it gets a good review on NPR).

Anyone have similar experiences in audience discomfort?

Transformer 3: Annie Hall (http://forum.rifftrax.com/Smileys/default/cheesy.gif)

I think Mike is at least 3/4 in the bag on this one. The ending gag just killed me. It's like the ipecac scene in Family Guy. I don't know why I find that kind of shit so funny, but it just busts me up for some reason.

You know, I'll defend Transformers 3 to a certain point, but I'll never declare movies like Inception or
The Dark Knight to be overrated, and I think they're right, Inception and Dark Knight are great and
intelligent films and the Transformers movies are completely idiotic in comparison.

I absolutely loved Inception. I actually thought it was too deep, even for me, and I usually love that
sort of story-telling.

That being said though, I still enjoyed Dark of the moon. For a Michael bay film, it was pretty good.

Same here. I think it's the juxtaposing of highbrow with lowbrow. It's why I like Monty Python & love the Mr. Creosote sketch in The Meaning of Life. Something inherently funny about being cerebral one moment & disgusting the next.

I'm just trying to imagine the overkill that Michael Bay would bring to a pie fight. It would go on forever.

Like they said in HiB some people will say "It's Transformers, what did you expect?" but that's still no excuse for a bad movie.

I give the TV series a pass, because I'm really not that interested. But that being the case I am
certain that it could never be as bad as the prequels. Speaking of, I am curious... does anybody
wonder if Plinkett is ever going to review the Clone wars movie or the Holiday special?

Confused Matthew reviewed the Clone Wars movie and he put it so eloquently when the stinger
at the end of his review was Obi-Wan's misshapen animated face saying "We are in NO position
to go ANYWHERE or do ANYTHING!"

What the fuck is it with the peeps having a hard on for this movie?! Fucking Cowboys and
Aliens wasn't that good!! It was a pretty ho-hum western with some sci-fi thrown in here
and there, the story wasn't that good, the action scenes were barely decent, characters
weren't anything ground-breaking or anything... so I gotta ask..... WHAT THE HELL is with
the unfounded praise? It's got a 44% on Rotten Tomatoes! That's only 8% higher than Dark of the moon!

I'll take Tombstone over Cowboys and Aliens any old day of the week.

Not just them, but fucking Cinema Snob! He declared it if I recall, BEST movie of the Summer,
oKay, that's a ballsy statement that couldn't possibly be backed up by the sheer number of
balls required for such a statement. I mean... everything about Cowboys and Aliens is basically
mediocre at best! Mediocre characters, mediocre story, mediocre action, there's no surprises,
and please don't tell me the woman being an alien is a surprise, because we all knew she was
an alien, looking at the trailer. Seeing Daniel Craig kick ass is cool, but he did it so much better
in Casino Royale and even in Quantum of Soul-less.

Cowboys and Aliens isn't bad, but it sure as hell isn't good. It's just plain damn mediocre. It lacks
ambition, vision, and heart. So therefore I hope you all will excuse my reaction if you enjoyed the
movie a lot.

You seem to feel pretty strongly about this.

I just meant that the Half In the Bag guys have proven themselves to be pretty unforgiving critics who don't let movies get away with anything. I've watched several of their reviews and tend to agree with most of their opinions. That leads me to believe that this movie will appeal to me. Then again, I might think it's mediocre, or even utter crap, but somehow I doubt that. Anyway, I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Hey I finally read the "rebuttal" to Red Letter Media's review of TPM, and... it was 108
pages of nothing. The guy who wrote it says he'll try to be fair, and he is fair.. selectively!
When he's not being "fair", he's going "okay, this guy is a dumbass" or "That is really,
really stupid", and he tries to back up his reasons, but then he seems to completely
miss the point of the argument or just doesn't seem to understand things at all.

Also, it wasn't 108 pages just of his Essay. a good chunk of it was quotes from RLM,
and there was a lot of imagery with thought or speaking bubbles filled with text in an
attempt to prove his point.

Never underestimate the power of denial. The great thing about denial is that, whether or not the Ep1 fanboy is in a true state of denial or he simply has subhuman standards for entertainment, people get really pissed off when you accuse them of being in denial.

I tried skimming through this rebuttal once, but it quickly became apparent to me that it really was more pathetic than amusing, and I was indeed wasting my time.

What's even more sad is that this rebuttal was written years after the theatrical release of TPM. As far as I'm aware, there were a substantial number of people who enjoyed TPM the first time around as part of collective audience buzz, but were more objective about the film years later; I've learned that peoples' initial reactions deserve some leeway. But this rebuttal ain't an initial reaction.

I think the best RLM review, though, is for Ep3. Some people can accuse Ep1 criticisms as preaching to the converted, but I love how the Sith review manages to go against "consensus" opinion whilst exposing the many similarities between all the prequels. Personally, I feel that most praise for Episode III was due to a collective Stockholm Syndrome of low expectations (don't mind me if you enjoy the film, I ain't gonna debate or insult you).

I hate to much like RLM try to come up with a fix for the prequels, because everything about them
is wrong, but however.... in a matter of hours, I came up with a few (very) rough ideas for a synopsis
for all three Star Wars prequels... I will put it in spoilers, so nobody has to read the whole damn thing
if they don't feel like it, but I feel like even if my ideas are stupid, they're still better than anything in the
prequels.

We actually had a thread once where we were creating a more acceptable version of the prequels. I thought what we came up with had potential, if it weren't for fear of legal action I think it'd make an interesting audioplay.

I say go for it, as long as you aren't trying to profit from it.  There are tons of Star Wars audiodramas out there on the internet.

I've always wanted to ask this but never felt it deserved its own thread...

Has anyone ever experimented with:

A.) Misplacing Rifftrax: For example, playing TPM Rifftrax over another movie, or vice versa?
-OR-
B.) Rifftrax + DVD Commentary: For example, playing TPM Rifftrax simultaneously with George Lucas' commentary.

I tried B once for a few minutes, I forget what movie. It was kind of amusing, but it didn't fully work. However, I'm fairly convinced that the right combo could result in something as fruitfully synchronous as The Wizard of Oz + Dark Side of the Moon.

yeah but most of them aren't built on a foundation of "Lucas is a hack, the prequels blow let's start from scratch"

An interesting concept, George is talking then all of a sudden Mike and Bill start yelling at the movie
and basically telling George Lucas to piss off, since he's so good at taking a piss anyway.

You know, it's funny, TPM was one of the few Rifftrax I simply had to give up on; the riffing couldn't overcome how much this fucking movie irritated me. The "double decker commentaries" could be quite amusing:

LUCAS: Children love Jar Jar, he rivals Yoda as a force of pure creative expression & spiritual insight-
KEVIN: AGH! It's Roger Rabbit as designed by SATAN!

...You know, I think Highlander was the DVD where I switched to the commentary during a repeat Rifftrax viewing, and it didn't really work because the guys behind Highlander are rather down to earth & lack delusions of grandeur. You know, sane.

The Prequels, on the other hand... the views of Lucasfilm & Rifftrax are about as diametrically opposed as you can get! (Leaving aside Battlefield Earth; yes there's a director's commentary for that.)

...Bah.  :-\ The concept's probably more entertaining than any execution. My ideas tend to be a waste of time.

The fake Zookeeper trailer was brilliant. It was dismissed by a lot of pop-savvy cynics, but since I pay so little attention to pop culture they fooled me into thinking Zookeeper was a mock trailer! And I'm glad I was able to be fooled (I'm sick of predicting things). Seriously, that TGI Friday's moment seemed impossibly stupid.  :D

I like the "normal" Half in the Bag reviews too, there's always some odd perspective that makes me laugh. They make me want to see X-Men First Class just so I can see the awkward close-up of Michael Ironside they were talking about. The esteemed "binocular scene". Did you happen to see that in the theater?

The only film they've reviewed lately that I actually saw in the theater was Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and I thought they were pretty spot on about its merits & flaws. Mike's comments about John Lithgow were hysterical. John Lithgow sad face= "Boo hoo, I have Alzheimer's."

Yeah, I think they absolutely nailed the Zoopkeeper segment. I've watched it several times and it just doesn't get old for me. What a perfect movie for that treatment!

I did not see X-Men First Class in the theater. Looking forward to it on BD.

George Lucas's greatest weakness is that it's very easy to mimic him. All you need is... Kevin Bacon.

I find it extremely hard to believe myself. Any schmuck(like myself) could theoretically go to comic
con with 100 burned copies of the Holiday special to sell. Sure, I doubt 10 copies would sell,
let alone 100. But if they have copies I guess there is a demand not because people aren't net
savvy but because they lack the requisite software to burn a copy to a DVD they can watch.

Thanks, Barnes! Loved the video. I've been curious about this documentary for a while & I'm glad it'll finally be on DVD in October. They're sadly correct about so many people jumping to conclusions about the movie's title, I've read some very ignorant trashings in various forums. Comments like "The title alone makes me want to punch the director" or "Great, 90 minutes of losers whining about how Lucas raped their childhood." Have you noticed how the prequel defenders tend to have absolutely no sense of humor (beyond the Pavlovian responses to Jar Jar's antics)? Fundamentalists, man... they really bring out the "mental" of fundamentalism.

You know, if you put on the right pair of glasses, this is what you'll see on the Star Wars Blu-ray ads:

And last and perhaps most controversially: In the climax of Return Of The Jedi, where Darth Vader at last regains his humanity after witnessing the torture of his son, turns on the Emperor, then throws him to his death in an act of ultimate defiance and self-sacrifice, the revelatory drama of this internal conflict is now more acutely expressed by Darth Vader yelling, “NOOOOOOOOOO!” a couple of times.

That line, a clear callback to Vader’s similarly expressive “NOOOOOOOOOO!” from Revenge Of The Sith, thus completes the character’s journey and reminds the audience that, while he seems superficially like the epitome of badass evil, Darth Vader is actually just the very sensitive victim of a life fraught with tragedy, torment, and difficult choices. Really, Lucas has only begun to scratch the surface when it comes to deepening our understanding of Darth Vader. Perhaps by the time of its next format release, there will be at least two or three more “NOOOOOOOOOO!”s to get that message across.

On the flip side of the coin, Spielberg made a public apology for the changes he made to E.T. http://www.avclub.com/articles/steven-spielberg-sorry-he-made-all-those-changes-t,61801/ (http://www.avclub.com/articles/steven-spielberg-sorry-he-made-all-those-changes-t,61801/)

Not only is Spielberg a better filmmaker, he also seems to possess a much better grasp of reality.

Still, I'm so dumbfounded that Lucas is that oblivious, to think adding 2 "NO!"s to the end of Jedi was a good idea; even Sith fans roar with unintentional laughter during that scene. It's so ridiculous that it actually strikes me as a more rational scenario if Lucas knows he's fucking with his fans and Skywalker Ranch is rumbling with hearty laughter. All this because he needed a good laugh. I can empathize with that. He needs a good laugh more than he needs the money.

What's your perspective, D.B.?

To be fair to Speilberg, wasn't ET released with both versions?

Said it before, but I wouldn't care about the changes if the originals were still there.  I still think the perfect comparison is the original Star Trek TV series on blu-Ray.  Aside from the changes being pretty uninvasive to changing the product, the originals were still available if you didn't want to see the CGI Enterprise.

Well, I posted some shit over in the Lucas thread about how I didn't think it was for the money as much as Lucas just being completely obsessed with tweaking these movies. And the fact that he's not releasing the unmolested versions of the original trilogy makes it seem like he might get off on some sort of a power trip. I think this might be slightly misinterpreted as "fucking with the fans." The fans are indeed being fucked with but I don't believe it's to give Lucas a good laugh. I think this thing has a hold of him and he's developed some obsessive compulsive type of deal.

DRIVE & CONTAGION

Great ep. I've seen Contagion & plan to see Drive. Glad they tackled the issue of what I term, non-derisively, "arthouse Hollywood" (or "blockbuster minimalism"). I totally understand what they mean by "one of the best movies this year, you shouldn't see it".

I can only comment on Contagion, though my feelings were expressed somewhat by Mike. "It wasn't bad but I didn't get the intent of the film, and I hate saying that because I'm glad that this type of film exists." Of Soderbergh, I love his previous "big budget art films" Traffic & Solaris, but Contagion I'd give a lesser 7/10 because it didn't achieve for me the "ambiguous synthesis" of the others; though it did have another interesting score by Cliff Martinez (incidentally, also scored Drive), who's great at scores that mix electronic/orchestral/ambient (I think the Solaris soundtrack is a masterpiece, very haunting & emotional).

This seems like a real departure for the guys. as they review a couple of foreign films. It's funny, but at the same time I'm struck by the quality of their analytical skills. Their skills have always been there, but for some reason they really stand out here for me, especially in the analysis of the biggest-budget Bollywood film ever. Hah hah, unless of course Indiana Jones is being raped on a Pinball machine, then it's funny.

I wonder what Jodie Foster thought of that scene. It takes a special show to combine Indiana Jones with The Accused. I wonder when they'll reference Irreversible. Jabba sodomizing Darth Vader in an underpass.  :speechless: "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!" (I feel dirty)

I don't know what to make of that, but I think the best attacks on the Star Wars creator comes in more subtle forms, like Cartman going "Whateva, whateva! I do wha I wan! I digitally inserted Jabba the Hutt in episode 4! Whateva! I do wha I wan!" and the talk show host goes "Wow, he really IS out of control!"

As long as by Part 2 they mean Plinkett's review of Crystal Skull. I heard that when French Audiences saw Jack and Jill, they were very disappointed because in France the movie was entitled "Ventre moi Cathedral"... when loosely translated it means "Fuck the pain away".

I have something to say about the French, but it ain't a joke: the French love Jar Jar. Well, French Star Wars fans, at least. The documentary The People Vs George Lucas shows clips of several Frenchmen explaining why Jar-Jar is "sublime". Yes, one of them used the word "sublime" to describe Jar Jar. Unless the director deliberately excluded all the non-French Jar-Jar apologists, there is something about Jar Jar that resonates exclusively amongst a certain portion of the French.

Anyway, time for me to watch Episode 21!

Fun, funny, sickening and depressing at the same time. They really exposed this piece of shit for what it is. People who contribute their hard earned money to this sort of sham entertainment should be ashamed. I'm pretty cynical when it comes to the motion picture industry, but this put things in a whole new sinister context. I used to think Sandler was just an unfunny hack, but now I genuinely believe he's one of the biggest scumbags in show business.

I still laugh every time Plinkett announces "Half In the Bag!" Is it just me, or does his announcement of the title seem to be growing incrementally louder & more irritated? I'm not in the mood to compile a video of 21 title announcements back-to-back, but I could swear Plinkett used to sound more lower pitched & apathetic, then progressed to grumpy & now irritated. How many more episodes before he outright shouts "HALF IN THE BAG!!!!!!!!!! Fuck these guys, I'm switching to Blu-ray."

That was the best intro to date, in my opinion. He definitely sounds louder and more irritated. I'm so in love with these reviews; it's seriously one of my favorite things on the innerwebs.

Another one is about due, a new review from Plinkett comes along roughly every 6 months. ROTS review came out last December, the Cop Dog review came out this past June, and I am guessing that the review for Kingdom of the Crystal skull is coming sometime this month...(I hope).

While we're waiting for a new Half In The Bag, I found an article on Cracked that's good complimentary reading alongside the People Vs George Lucas episode:

6 Pop Culture Visionaries Who Get Too Much Credit
Quote
#5. Star Wars: George Lucas

Here's the general pop culture consensus on George Lucas: He sucks now, but he once wrote and directed the first Star Wars trilogy, which makes him another innovative, rebellious filmmaker whose creative fire has tragically guttered out.
But here's the truth: Lucas couldn't lose it because he never had it.

Who Actually Deserves the Credit:
First things first: Lucas absolutely was the brilliant mastermind behind the Star Wars movie ... prequels. I through III? That was all Lucas. But IV through VI? The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi were directed by Irv Kershner and Richard Marquand, respectively, and both screenplays were written by Lawrence Kasdan. But that still leaves Lucas as the writer/director of Episode IV, right? That's the big one: The Star Wars that put the "Star Wars" in Star Wars.

But A New Hope wasn't entirely Lucas, either: A fellow USC film grad, Gary Kurtz, who first collaborated with Lucas on his breakthrough film, American Graffiti, was producer for both Star Wars and Empire. Kurtz did more than an ordinary producer, however: Beyond running the day-to-day operations of the films, Kurtz also ended up coaching the actors (which is, technically speaking, the director's job).

Even minor characters like C-3PO weren't the juice of Lucas' mindgrapes. Lucas originally wanted 3PO to be an "oily, car salesman type" rather than our lovably gay robot butler friend. If that character archetype sounds familiar, that's because Lucas would later get his sleazy salesman in The Phantom Menace, in the shape of the flying anti-Semitic stereotype, Watto. The actually likeable, not-racist version of C-3PO that we know today was largely thanks to Anthony Daniels. Daniels was originally hired as just a mime inside the gold suit, with someone else providing the voice-over. But actor Stan Freberg convinced Lucas to not use a different voice and stick with Daniels -- which is particularly remarkable since Freberg was one of the actors considered to replace Daniels' voice. That's right: A struggling actor actually had to step up and sacrifice his own livelihood just to kill one of Lucas' terrible ideas.

The man is like the original sin of filmmakers.

Agreed, and I think he proved this beyond a shadow of a doubt when he took the reins all by himself and made on of the biggest, most expensive, most disappointing pieces of shit in the history of cinema. The man is downright dangerous when left to his own devices.

Lucas even had to have his name as writer for the novelization of Star Wars, took something like 15 years before we found out it was actually written by Allen Dean Foster.

I don't think I've ever heard of another instance where the writer for a movie novel had to keep it secret like that, I think it just shows the level of narcissism that Lucas has, it's way more than just doing it for the money, he needs to take credit for everything.

He's like the Ori in Stargate, his ego requires massive levels of adulation, I think if he didn't take credit for it all and suck up all the praise he would shrivel up and die... ;D

I love the fact that he has this fetish for taking credit for everything, and now that he's been exposed as somewhat of a creative fraud, all he has left to take full credit for are the prequels. That's all yours, George. You can have that!

A new holiday tradition?

"To celebrate our forthcoming new review, we’re going to host an online stream of all the previous Plinkett reviews in chronological order this upcoming Wednesday and Thursday!"

Streaming links will be posted starting on Wednesday.

Funny if it's just another kid's movie. Baby Geniuses 2 or something.

I'd like to see Plinkett tackle Transformers. Stoklasa seemed to have some deep-rooted Bay issues in the HITB half-review.

It's not official, but the general consensus seems to be that he tipped his hand by teasing it at the end of the Cop Dog review.

I'd love to see Plinkett take on Transformers, but I wouldn't expect it any time soon. Seems as if the new drill is regular eps of HITB for new releases with the occasional long-form Plinkett for stuff that's aged a bit.

If you're going to try one, I suggest Revenge of the Sith. The voice got brisker with time & the ROTS review also covers the general failings of a 3 prequels. Plus it has a lot more of his hilarious Palpatine impersonation. "Execute order... SIX!" (you won't know why that's funny unless you watch it)

I get those all the time on Blip. Clumpy is an a-hole. His buddy is destroyed and he just stands there with a big grin on his face and kinda laughs. Screw you Clumpy!

Also sick of "Sailor Jerry" commercials. Also the damn Chevy being dropped out of a cargo plane. Hope the parachute failed.

As far as the review.. I can't wait. His reviews are obscene yet so damn on the money of pointing out the major flaws. I actually LIKE the voice... It isn't a disappointment like my son...

Good for you! Strangely enough I really agree with the vast majority of what he says about movies. Even I couldn't disagree too much with what he said about Star Trek 2009. Strangely enough though.... Plinkett didn't say ANYTHING about the Lens Flare. I guess it really doesn't matter after all.

Haters gonna hate. Plinkett gives no fucks. And if you haven't watched his prequel reviews, you're robbing yourself of some of the greatest film criticism of all time.

I hope the Crystal Skull review has more of his Kermit-y George Lucas impression.

"Uhh, Steven, I'd really like ILM to get to work on those CGI beavers. Time is money."
"Frank Darabont's a cunt, we're not using his script."
"Say Frank, Steven says you're a cont.... you're a cont... a cont...a CONT... CONT.... CONT.... Cont....inuing source of inspiration to him!"

:D I don't know if that's a reference to anything, but it made me laugh really hard nonetheless. Stuttering George. I guess "Dooku" is relatively easy for a stutterer to pronounce. No one makes fun of the names in Crystal Skull, do they? Either they're iconic (Indiana Jones) or unmemorable (the Russians). That's one plus for Indiana Jones over the Star Wars prequels, the IJ movies aren't so "name-centric". The characters actually DO THINGS rather than have their names repeated in conferences. And their names aren't elongated. It's not "Mutt Windu", it's just "Mutt".

See this is all sorts of wrong
Quote
Henry "Mutt" Williams, born Henry Walton Jones III, was the illegitimate son of Marion Ravenwood and Indiana Jones. His stepfather was Colin Williams, who was killed during World War II.
If he was illegitimate he was not

Quote
born Henry Walton Jones III

he was born Henry Walton Ravenwood, not least because his father wasn't aware of him and thus wouldn't have been able to sign off on his parentage. The only reason I've always been a Jesset-Meade-Rowley is because my father signed off on my birth certificate, my parents didn't get married until the early 80s.

Best thing I can recommend is download helper. It can either download and convert the files to a friendly format or just download them and use your own software to convert them.

I don't get that at all. Why does Mike have such a soft spot for LaBeef? How could you possibly refer to him as a "natural actor," especially if you endured almost eight hours of full-tilt Transformers spazzing?

Ehn, not even great actos like John Turturro or Frances McDormand come out of Transformers with any credit or dignity.  Bad scripts and directors can ruin actors' performances.  I thought he was fine in Disturbia and Holes.

Yeah, that's the most extreme example, but I remember Mike defending his acting in the context of Transformers as well as KOTCS. He definitely views this dude through rose-colored glasses.

Anyway, the review was great. He does a predictably excellent job of pointing out just how needless and stupid this movie is. What a massive phone-in this was! I love how he used those surreal interview clips from the DVD extras. Makes it seem all the more bizarre, and furthers the mystery of Lucas' hypno-toad-like power over Spielberg.

I find it hard to believe he likes the Twilight films at all. He has joked many times before anyway. I can see the guys on Half in the bag tearing all those movies a new asshole, because honestly there's nothing to like about them. Hey, look at it this way, Plinkett also likes the Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen movies. :P

What I really liked about the Crystal Skull review was his amazing insight. I agree that Spielberg and Lucas were trying too hard to play it safe because of their old age and their lack of nerve prevented them from experimenting with things. Even Spielberg said he'd never make Close Encounters the same way today as he did 34 years ago because his outlook and his life has changed completely since.

Hmm, I'll have to rewatch it. I agreed with his points but didn't find it that funny. But I felt like shit the other night.

I'm not quite sure I believe this hypothesis, but it would be ironic if Plinkett had as little desire to review Crystal Skull as Spielberg had to make it. Both figures were swayed by, among other things, fan pressure!

I really look forward to him dissecting the Matrix films, though. I think the Twilight hatred has long become too obvious & beating a dead horse. Saying Twilight sucks is about as unique as saying Jar Jar Binks sucks, except I think we care even less about Twilight than we do Star Wars. It's not in our demographic. (Someone may say "Speak for yourself, Sutter." In which case: I DO! HAPPILY!)

Twilight hatred isn't just beating a dead horse, it's abstinence-fucking a dead horse up the exit chute. (Whatever that means.)

Even Spielberg said he'd never make Close Encounters the same way today as he did 34 years ago because his outlook and his life has changed completely since.
However, I think War of the Worlds benefited from this (unlike Crystal Skull). WotW had this very dark, world-weary quality that I dug. No trace of Lucas in WotW, no sirree!

Older, post-Schindler Spielberg = family unit's more important, but they can still be randomly exterminated (and will eventually go extinct).

I love the part where Plinkett says "again, matter of opinion... but mine is right.". But then a lot of things about the review were great. I think when they showed it as one of the worst movies of all time they kind of raised my expectations about how much they'd rip Crystal Skull apart.

I guess I don't expect the pure analysis element of the Plinkett reviews to be particular funny as much as I expect them to be a kind of insightful and surgical autopsy. Although I will say that I didn't laugh as much as I have on previous reviews, so you might be on to something there. Regardless of fan pressure, this needed to be done, not only for the fans, but also for Mike, who I have a feeling got some slight cathartic closure regarding the two-headed Spielberg/Lucas monster. As with TPM, this movie is clearly the source of great disappointment for fans, and requires this kind of clinical evisceration.

I wholeheartedly agree that Plinkett shouldn't go anywhere near the Twilight movies. Unlike the prequels and KOTCS, the Plinkett faithful don't give a flying fuck about these abominations and there's absolutely zero need for any kind of critical analysis. It's too easy, it's been done to death, and nobody cares. The Matrix, on the other hand, is perfect Plinkett fodder. Here's a franchise that started very strong out of the gate and then proceeded to disappoint on an increasingly grander scale with each new incarnation. The trilogy is loaded with potential for not only comedy, but also the signature style of analysis that we've grown to love so much. So Plinkett, don't waste your time with drivel that doesn't even lend itself to serious criticism! Head straight for The Matrix! We'll be waiting patiently.

Okay, so I rewatched the Crystal Skull review & jotted down some thoughts in Notepad as they occurred:

-None of the crude jokes are as funny as "Twinkies. I like to fuck my cat."
-Sallah was a great character. This makes me want to watch the first 3. Again.
-LOL @ George Lucas = "That other guy who sits in the chair."  :D :D :D
-Now I remember why I hated The Lost World and then forgot why I hated it.
-Does vodka come from a "winery"?
-Why don't any Karen Allen jokes involve Ghost In the Machine?
-Oh yeah, they're CGI prairie dogs. I keep calling them CGI beavers. Now I can correctly identify what sucks. Speaking of CGI, first time I
watched Crystal Skull I couldn't get over how the whole rainforest sequence looked like it was shot on a soundstage, especially when compared
to the early diner/chase location shooting in CT. He's right, the diner sequence is kinda nice.
-Is there actually a difference between the character and the IDEA of the character? You can't say people like Star Wars characters but
only like the "idea" of Indiana Jones. Luke Skywalker is no less an "idea". Don't get caught up in semantics, Plinkett.
-The Indy character of the first 3 was darker & more antiheroic than the clean-cut adventure hero. Spielberg says in the Raiders making-of that
there are shades of Humphrey Bogart's shady character from Treasure of the Sierra Madre.
-100% agree on the lack of grit. NEEDED MORE MURDER! Though I wouldn't call Last Crusade "gritty", either. 13 relatively bloodless murders. Before Crystal Skull, a lot of people complained about Last Crusade.
-Give some recognition to the DP of Indy 1-3, Douglas Slocombe! Kaminski's a fine DP but he couldn't replicate that look, thus explaining in part the visual discrepancies.
-Enough with the record-scratch sound effect!
-I'm betting "nucular" is a joke. A weak one, but this was filmed while Bush was still in office.
-The ending *sigh*. Look: this movie doesn't give a shit about interdimensionals. Lucas only called them "interdimensionals" to placate Spielberg, who
didn't want to make another "alien" movie. I don't think the screenwriter(s) researched Jacques Vallee's complex interdimensional theory.
Interdimensionals are directly at odds with extraterrestrials & flying saucers. Not to mention: 50's B MOVIES WERE MADE WAY BEFORE QUANTUM PHYSICS & CONCEPTS LIKE MULTIPLE DIMENSIONS WERE POPULARIZED. This movie has too many modern theories for a "50's sci-fi homage". It would be like if the plot of Last Crusade involved the theories of The Da Vinci Code.

When I was a kid I played the computer strategy game Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis. That had a better story than Crystal Skull.

I wholeheartedly agree that Plinkett shouldn't go anywhere near the Twilight movies. Unlike the prequels and KOTCS, the Plinkett faithful don't give a flying fuck about these abominations and there's absolutely zero need for any kind of critical analysis. Well-stated.

Anyway, merry christmas/happy holidays & stuff.

I never cared for his vision of War of the worlds, and frankly I haven't liked anything Spielberg has directed since... since Saving Private Ryan. Oh how the mighty have fallen. Even if you liked AI or War of the worlds, those movies are IMHO undeniably sub-par when compared with the glory days of  Duel, Jaws, Close Encounters, E.T., Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and so on.

See, I think his films got more interesting after Saving Private Ryan (until Crystal Skull). I really liked his output from A.I. to Munich (minus The Terminal). I don't consider Jurassic Park one of his greater efforts (it lacks the character of Indiana Jones 1-3 & most of his 70's output) and, frankly, I never liked ET. I'm one of the few who likes the "Dark Spielberg" of the early-mid 2000's. A.I. is one of the bleakest films ever made & Minority Report is like Kubrick meets Gilliam (with the energy of Raiders-era Spielberg). Catch Me If You Can gets some of the greatest performances from Dicaprio, Hanks & Walken, and Munich was a politically challenging film for Spielberg to make (the Academy didn't warm up to the Israel/Palestine conflict as much as they did the Holocaust or D-Day). I dunno, I liked seeing Spielberg films with an increased moral ambiguity. And I thought War of the Worlds was the perfect tonic for those who hated  Independence Day. The Rifftrax guys wouldn't call WotW "The WACKIEST alien invasion movie!" No idiotic scenes mining humor from alcoholic pilots or gravel-voiced homosexuals. Seriously, I hate ID4 as much as the Transformers movies & Roland Emmerich is just as deplorable a director as, if not more than, Michael Bay.

(But fuck The Terminal!)

Oh, yes, and I hate Tom Cruise. I think any film that makes Cruise watchable is a testament to the director's skills! Same goes with Michael Mann & Collateral.

Kubrick and... Gi--?!?!?!!!!!!, NO, just... No. Sutter, you're probably one hell of a great person and you could have a 180(or more) IQ for all I know, however, just because there is one scene where they pull back Tom Cruise's eyelids(A la Clockwork Orange) does NOT make it Kubrick. I guarantee you neither Kubrick or Gilliam would be vapid enough to put a scene where one of their main characters is built into a car and the car drives off to where the plot needs it to go.  And I guarantee you if I know Terry Gilliam at all, he hates this movie. I'll tell you what really makes Minority Report such a failure(albeit an overrated one) is that the hero has all kinds of chances to get away, but every other precipitating event is just a setup for another stupid sequence. Tom Cruise KNOWS where the guy is going to be, all he has to do is get out of Washington, and that's not even scratching the surface of the reasons why the story is such a colossal mess.
There is only one other(besides myself) that has such an intense hatred of that film as I do...Perhaps Confused Matthew can shed some light on Minority Report's glaring flaws, but most importantly it's failure as a work of art.

And why should I give any credence to this Confused Cont who hates 2001: A Space Odyssey? I actually tried watching his review for 2010, but it consisted of potshots against 2001.

I couldn't even stand watching one of this guy's reviews that I 100% agreed with (which would be the piece of shit Knowing). He's an insufferable little twerp who likes to hear himself talk. The only light being shed is his own vanity.

IMO, let's keep Matthew out of the Plinkett thread. Plinkett could eat this guy for breakfast. He's not worth the stuffing of a pizza roll.

Btw, you needn't be condescending. "Shed some light" my ass. I'm sure I don't care for all the films you do, but I ain't gonna try to convert you to my point of view, or the point of view of some asshole with a BlipTV account.

Pretty good review, although I think he focused on the Turing test too much.  I've always thought of it as being about people finding or losing their humanity, and as a byproduct of that we think about what it means to be human in general.

Nice observation about how the greatness of the movie is more about how the movie makes you think than what is happening at any point, you could call the movie a test to see how philosophically oriented the person watching it is....

I'm amazed they didn't refer to the original in their review.  I'm guessing they haven't seen it, and that's kinda surprising, considering how high profile it was.

Mike doesn't seem concerned with originals. He hadn't seen the original Conan The Barbarian or Fright Night.

Oh god, it was. I rented it because their review made it sound hysterically bad, but unfortunately I just thought it was unpleasantly bad & stopped after 20 mins or so. They shouldn't raise comedic expectations like that!

I love the original though. It bugs me when people refer to it as a "campy nostalgia" movie or whatever. Umm, no. The original Conan the Barbarian is a bloody Nietzschean opera. The PG-rated Conan the Destroyer was campy. Sword & sorcery TV series like Xena were campy. But Arnold's not winking at the camera when

Damn right Sutter. It was a really well-written film to boot. I think people don't really know what they mean when they use the word "campy". I'm not even sure I know what the word means, but if it means what I think it does, Conan the Barbarian is so NOT it.

At least in terms of horror, campy usually means self-parody.  A simple comparison would be to compare 2 Wes Craven movies: Scream is campy, the first Nightmare On Elm Street isn't (it was meant to be taken seriously, Freddy wasn't yet the world's first child murdering comic hero).

The first time I heard the word "campy" was when it was used to describe that horror hostess Elvira, Mistress of the Dark. Those midnight movie screenings of The Rocky Horror Picture Show are the living embodiment of camp (and its most negative attributes, IMO).

"Camp" and "Hip" coexist somewhere, they both imply a lack of seriousness or sincerity. But that doesn't automatically mean camp=comedy. A good example of a comedy-horror that's not camp is Shaun of the Dead. The humor didn't come from sending up the genre, it was actually a pretty sincere tribute to Romero's films & the genre. The Resident Evil movies could probably be described as campy, the people who make them don't give a flying fuck about zombies beyond a certain level of superficial imitation.

The best I can say is: the opposite of camp is earnestness, playing it straight. Which is exactly what Conan the Barbarian (1982) does. It's not trying to imitate anything or make witty references to other movies. (But if you try to play it too straight, you end up with unintentional camp-fests. Like, for instance, certain movies that try so hard to be macho & "not gay" that they end up being unintentionally gay. Some people find camp appeal in movies like 300 or Top Gun. It gets confusing, that's why I try to stick to my horror element!)

The thing that helped me understand what "camp" meant, is when I read that the original Batman T.V. series (Adam West) was considered "high-camp".  'nuff said.

The Devil Inside trailer (in a packed house the opening night of Dragon Tattoo) is responsible for the one time I made an audience of moviegoers laugh. I'm not at all a "moviehouse comedian", I'm not quick-witted or extroverted enough. However, I was so irritated by the trailer for The Devil Inside that upon its completion I groaned, louder than I intended, "So much for 'the last exorcism.'"

Hey, I didn't say it was a feat of comedic brilliance, just a pleasantly rare occurrence for me. I didn't bring down the house, mind you, it was more a series of pocketed murmurs, as if each person got the wordplay in a different millisecond.

Anyway, enough about myself, time to watch 2 guys who are consistently much funnier.

I thoroughly enjoyed CM's prequel reviews. They were my first exposure to him. Although I must admit, the more of his stuff I watched, the more annoying I found him. I'll still check out his stuff. He's due to release a Blade Runner review at some point. But yeah, Plinkett has chunks of guys like CM in his stool.
This was the case for me as well.  Only I'm not really interested in seeing his Blade Runner, since I can already pretty much guess what he has to say about it.

In fact, I find the whole wearing-thin-after-a-while issue to be true of most online content-creators.  It's why I hardly ever go to That Guy With the Glasses anymore.

I've always hated to admit this in the very rare instances that I have strongly disagreed with Confused Matthew... but his reviews are usually pretty solid. It isn't too often that his objectivity is too clouded by emotional reaction... one of the few exceptions being "No country for old men".. oh man, the amount of venom that poured fourth through my speakers as he reviewed it almost put me into a coma.

So if in 2014, Peter Hyams were to direct an inferior sequel to No Country that explained away everything that was enigmatic about the first film, CM would heap praise upon it to antagonize fans of the original film? "No Country For Old Men: The Year We Made Contact"   ;)

I hate the word "objectivity" when it's connected with something like film reviews.  You are reviewing a film and giving an opinion of it.  By definition, you are not being objective.  Stop pretending that you are.  What you're really trying to do is elevate your opinion to the level of fact.  Stop it.

The clincher for me was his 2001 review - not so much the opinion he gave (I disagree with it), but the fact that he took 70 minutes to say the same goddamn thing over and over again.  And then his 2010 review, which I watched until it reached the point when I realized he was just using it as a bludgeon to hammer home the same point he had already made abundantly clear with his 2001 review.  It actually soured me on the whole idea of the video recap/review style of online reviewing, since it called attention to its obvious flaws.  First, there are very, very few circumstances where you actually need to recap the whole film to make your point.  Second, it typically misses out on the visual, filmic aspects of storytelling in favor of the bare plot (which often isn't even the most important aspect of a work of literature, much less a film).  In short, those two reviews were so bad that they ruined an entire genre of internet criticism for me.

Plinkett's reviews have some of the same problems with length, longwindedness, and hyperbole. They are better for the most part, though, largely because as filmmakers, the RedLetterMedia guys know a lot more about film qua film than Matthew does, and thus bring a lot more to the table in terms of their analysis.  Matthew's analysis rarely goes beyond the bare plot.

I still watch Stand-in Stan's videos, though.  They're short and cover more interesting subjects that are more within his range of expertise.

No. The purpose of a film is to create a subjective emotional or aesthetic response within an audience.  To judge the effectiveness of the film is to judge the degree to which it provoked such a response.  Sure, you can talk about the exact way a shot is framed, but by what standard can this shot be judged to be "beautiful" or "effective?"  By whether or not it provoked a reaction.

I was talking about other objective factors, like the script and internal contradictions within the framework of the story, which can constitute fact.

Nope, different people could have different yet valid views of those things as well...  One of the few things you could look at objectively is continuity, like the dead girl showing up in space mutiny, use that as a guage of overall quality.

Take Pan's Labyrinth, I strongly disagree with every single point Mathew makes in his review.  There is nothing at all in that film I like.

I haven't watched his 2001 review, but I take it from others talking about it that he misses the point, it's something that really needs to be seen on a big screen with good sound, it's more about the experience of watching it than the story itself.  For the story it helps to read the book...

Let's put it this way: there's no such thing as pure objectivity. Even dealing with things like plot holes, we're usually driven by our emotional reaction to the film. Let's take Minority Report, which I like & you hate. We're more likely to scrutinize these things if the film has failed to suck us in. Your negative reaction to Minority Report made your mind much more susceptible to its plot holes. Whereas it was one of the few films I thoroughly enjoyed at the cinema from beginning to end; the film succeeded at sucking me into its world & thus I didn't have (or even want) the emotional distance for intellectualization.

(To very loosely paraphrase something Ridley Scott said on the Alien DVD commentary: "I'm well aware that, scientifically, there's no sound in outer space. If your first reaction is really 'Hey, there shouldn't be sound in outer space!'...just shut up.")

The only way to be objective is to be a computer (or an alien scientist observing humanity under a microscope). There's no way you can be objective about something like lens flare. All you can do is take a poll and see how many people were bugged by it. And if you have positive inclinations towards the film, chances are you'll be less bothered by the lens flare.

What I'm trying to say is: when writing something, there's actually 2 levels of Subjectivity Vs Objectivity:

1. The emotions/attitudes you have before you're writing something
2. The point you're trying to make directly with your text

My point is that, even if you try really hard to achieve #2, you were still led to it by your very nature as a thinking, feeling human being who, wittingly or not, carries the baggage of #1.

I haven't watched his 2001 review, but I take it from others talking about it that he misses the point, it's something that really needs to be seen on a big screen with good sound, it's more about the experience of watching it than the story itself.  For the story it helps to read the book...
Some call it "story". Some call it "Arthur C Clark's stubborn need to spell things out."

Kubrick was trying to achieve a whole new form of narrative through film. It wasn't about linear storytelling.

From what little I watched of the CM review, I was turned off by his allegedly "objective" argument that "it's a fact that nothing happens."

And if he hated No Country For Old Men, I'd suspect he uses the same argument. That twit has no concept of visual storytelling. "Oh, good, people talking + camera movement = something's happening." IMO, the place where Nothing's Happening is his reviews.

Well, Clark was a hard science fiction writer, not fantasy.   And he doesn't get around to talking about what is really going on until the 3rd book 2061.   The funny thing about the series is that in the book 2001 all the stuff with the large obelisk happens around Saturn, but in the later books everything happens around Jupiter just like the movie.

It's true that there are commonly-accepted "rules" of filmmaking, but a film could follow every rule and still suck, and it could break every rule and still work. That's what makes "objective" criticism near impossible--the most a critic can do is explain the factors that led to his personal reaction.

I guess you're right. I still think however it is possible to be objective ONLY as far as removing yourself as far from subjective as you can. Obviously objective in this context is not and cannot be an absolute.

Actually, I was substituting "Tailgunner" for "Gunflyer" like my brain does in reverse here. The actual chorus is:

That was a fun, immensely enjoyable episode. Thanks again for posting, Barnes.

But I must confess.... I am a racist. You see, I have no desire to see Red Tails. And that can only mean one thing: I must hate black people. There's absolutely no other possible explanation for not wanting to see Red Tails. Is there? All movie criticism is just glorified racism.
----

So, going back to Plinkett's Episode II review for a moment, and what he said about the "urban market": Would you theorize that the ultimate, long term goal of Red Tails is to get more black people into Star Wars?

What is up with the way anybody who can get close to him treats him? The relationships this guy has with people are bizarre. You only have to look to his relationship with Spielberg, one in which Spielberg does whatever the hell Lucas wants and then turns arounds and talks shit about him. It's as if people act a certain way when they're with him and then turn to each other behind his back and say "Oh, that's just George being George. He's a strange one!" Without knowing exactly what goes on behind the scenes, it's impossible to know for sure. We can only go on what's out there as public knowledge.

I do find it pretty offensive that he's somehow claiming to be a pioneer of African-American action films, especially since he's built this platform on what is apparently a pretty atrocious movie. Maybe nobody wanted to make it because it sounded like a piece of shit.

I also find it offensive that they say that people WOULD go see the movie if it was an all white cast... uh uh! Remember Flyboys? That piece of shit flopped hard, and it was just as awful as Red tails is, if not worse.

I need Lucas to explain these.  I went to IMDB and just grabbed the first 100 mostly black or black lead character movies.  I only went "A" - "T".  Where is the Racism that Hollywood is showing?

Well I just posted 121 films from IMDB that had mostly black casts, or black leads, but it was flagged as spam!  Anyway, where's the Racism Hollywood is showing?

Is he really saying that.  I have no plans on seeing this movie and it has nothing to do with the cast being black,it has everything to do with the trailer looking awful and being burned by Lucas before.

Well when Lucas was talking to Oprah in an interview that's how it sounded to me, that because it was an all black cast, nobody would go to see it. Yet there are plenty of WW II era films that feature all-white casts that sucked and bombed.... 1941 anybody? 1941 was better then red tails, and that is NOT an opinion.

I guess technically, you might be able to make an argument that Red Tails is racist in that it makes those guys look like complete jackasses in this movie, especially if it's banking on being 100% historically accurate.

I can scarcely believe it myself. I've listened to that interview over and over... and it seriously feels like they still believe that racism is alive and well throughout the United States. Certainly, there does exist racism in many parts of the USA and the world in general, but to quote Richard Brooks: "We're past legal segregation, we're past separate drinking fountains, we're at the hearts and minds stage."

I know. It boggles my mind to say the very least... but it seems like every time Lucas opens his mouth he comes off as even more naive than before. I know people are sick to death of my being critical of Lucas, but when he says something that makes him seem like a total jackass, I can't help but discuss in a possibly vain attempt to find a reason for it.

RLM recaps their trip to the 24-hour bad movie festival known as B-Fest. They actually sponsored their own movie this year and chose, of all things, Galaxy Invader!

http://blip.tv/play/AYLqwzsC

B-Fest sounds pretty wild. You might die from laughter, or just die. Wall-to-wall target-rich riffing fodder (http://www.b-fest.com/lineup.html), that's for sure. I've known about Death Bed since I first heard it referenced in Oswalt's stand-up, but I've never seen it. I must rectify this. And To Catch a Yeti starring Meatloaf? Seriously?!? I need to see this!

I'm stoked they featured my favorite line from Roadhouse! The punching montage they put together is pretty epic.

I must be one of the only people who bought Death Bed before I became familiar with Patton Oswalt. Sadly it's remained one of those DVDs I've bought but never got around to watching. If you're so inclined, you can read the liner notes of the Death Bed DVD here: http://cultepics.com/ce_deathbed_notes.html (http://cultepics.com/ce_deathbed_notes.html)

Patton did a book signing here last year before his show. If I'd gone to get his autograph, I would have had him sign my Death Bed DVD. I didn't go to the signing, but I wondered if it would have been unique or if hundreds have already had the same idea and I'd be just another Death Bedder.

The only signing I ever went to was for Type O Negative around a decade ago. Got Peter Steele's autograph. Now he's dead.

How's this for a banner:

Which raises the issue, it's not "The Bed that Eats People", just "The Bed That Eats".

Wait, what?!? "The Bed That Eats"?  :D That is hilarious. Not that it was a thing in the seventies (I don't think) but it sounds like the title is bagging on the bed. Deathbed: The Bed that Blows Big Time.

Well in the movie, the bed eats more than just people. At one point it eats a bucket of fried chicken, and apple, and I think even drinks wine or something.

If you think the synopsis is wierd, wait till you watch the movie and get the explanation for how the bed came to be a creature. Not to mention how they end up defeating it. Fuckin' wierd, even for the 70s.

And if you have him sign the DVD, at least you will have him sign the right one. I wonder how many people have mistakenly gotten Deathbed from 2002 and tried to get him to sign that.

The bed doesn't just eat. It also folds up its own sheets & goes to sleep snoring. It kills, it eats, it tidies up, it sleeps. (Sleep Bed: The Bed that Sleeps)

Well in the movie, the bed eats more than just people. At one point it eats a bucket of fried chicken, and apple, and I think even drinks wine or something.
Doesn't it even take Pepto Bismol or Alka Seltzer or something?

AV Club featured it in their "Ridiculous Horror Movie Adversaries" Inventory. Lemme see if I can find it....

...Yep! And Death Bed is #1: http://www.avclub.com/articles/night-of-the-killer-lamp-23-ridiculous-horrormovie,2071/ (http://www.avclub.com/articles/night-of-the-killer-lamp-23-ridiculous-horrormovie,2071/)

They also included it in their Video Inventory, including a clip where you hear the bed snoring, which prompts one of them to ponder the "metaphysical paradox of a bed that sleeps":
http://www.youtube.com/v/XPEs2s608aI

Yeah, all Full Moon movies I've seen are pretty bad. And their Deathbed was no exception. At least the old one is wierd enough to be an interesting novelty. Not so much the 2002 version.
The guy behind Full Moon, Charles Band, has to be one of the biggest hacks of low budget cinema. He directed, among other things, Laser Blast. He makes Roger Corman look like an old time studio mogul like Daryl Zanuck by quality comparison.

I thought of a Full Moon movie I didn't hate: Stuart Gordon's Lovecraft adaptation Castle Freak (and Gordon's Pit & The Pendulum was okay). One of the lesser Gordon films & Lovecraft adaptations, but still better than the usual Full Moon junk. I've honestly never understood the success of the Puppet Master series.

Anyway, so as not to bury the latest RLM videos, I'm going to bump Barnes' video updates below:

They're cookin' up somethin'.

Well, would you look at that.  Plinkett made an iRiff!

http://redlettermedia.bandcamp.com/

So that's what was cryptically announced for the 10th!

EDIT: Well I bought one. You can buy it as an MP3 for $1.99 or a higher customized price if you're feeling generous. I decided to pay $2.66, in honor of Order Sixty-Six. (Would it have been funnier if I priced it at $2.06? The actual joke is "Execute order SIX.")

Let us know what it's like Sutter.  I really don't care for their humour, but I love their insight.  It'll be interesting to see what side the commentary falls on.

Wow. This is an interesting development to say the least. I listened to a few bits from the track and I think it's gonna be a fairly unique experience. The bits that I heard seemed to consist mostly of critical analysis, which I'm absolutely fine with. I love Plinkett and I love Plinkett on Star Wars. I could listen to him go on and on about it, and if all he does is rip this thing an ass for two-and-a-half hours, I'll feel like I died and went to that great Pizza Roll in the sky. I don't exactly see this appealing much to the average riff fan, but we'll see how it plays out.

Releasing the Episode I review in "3D" made for some good trolling. A lot of people were like "what the fuck?!? This is it??? They didn't even add new material!" "This gave me a fucking headache!!!" Granted, some of it was faux outrage, but there were a fair share of legitimately confused individuals.

If anyone decides to remaster the Plinkett commentary onto a Phantom Menace DVD rip, could they let me know and perhaps arrange for me to download a copy from them?

Willing to provide a picture of my Phantom Menace DVD in my hands and a screenshot of my purchase acknowledgement for the audio commentary as proof that this would be legal.

I'm listening to this commentary sans The Phantom Menace. It comes off like some weird avantgarde audiobook.

I'd like to hear a debate between Plinkett & Stephen Wright.

Well at least they don't hate John Carter and can explain what they don't like about it from a individual point of view.

They're not known for pulling punches, so the fact that they were as positive about it as they were speaks pretty highly of it in my book. They're honest about its faults while at the same time praising it for being an overall good, enjoyable movie.

I'm not AS crazy about Half in the Bag. I caught a fair few episodes, and it's alright, but if they're not covering a movie I'm interested in-- either because I think it's good or because I want to see them rip it apart-- I tend to pass.

I WANT another Plinkett Review, but I understand why he's not exactly doing those on a weekly basis. I'm sure they take quite a while to make, Plinkett's senile murderer angle might be in danger of burning itself out too quickly if he made them too often, and he probably doesn't want to be pigeon-holed as the guy who JUST does those.

Meh.  ::)  Still not enough to get me to see it before the Rifftrax. At least 3 people would each to hold a gun to my head before I would ever think about spending any kind of money to sit through 2 1/2 hours of characters I've barely heard of supposedly saving the world.

Still I'm going with my wife to a drive in theater that's showing the Avengers first and tickets are only six bucks, so if I end up driving away after a little bit of Battleship, it's not like I'll feel ripped off.

Now available! Mr. Plinkett’s commentary track for Star Wars! The original! aka A New Hope. This is for the DVD release of the film from 2004. The special edition version. You know the one with the terrible photoshopped cover that most people seem to own. This commentary may also work with the Blu-Rays too.

I listened his New Hope commentary last night, I thought it was pretty good. I was a bit underwhelmed by the one he made for Episode I and I thought this was a real step up. It felt a lot like one of his reviews most of the time: funny, and also really a insightful look at what made the movie work, but he also even pointed out a few plot holes and things I never thought of before.

Speaking of reviews, I'm really wanting him to make another one.
