Title: I CALL SHENENIGANS ON THE ACADEMY!
Post by: Andrew1911 on January 23, 2007, 02:17:04 PM
What the? Children of Men got snubbed for BP? Little Miss Sunshine and Babel are up for Best Picture? Dreamgirls not up for BP? Well, actually, that's a good thing. Hooray! They did one thing right so far! Greengass is nominated for Best Director? Hey, we're on a roll here! Volver snubbed? The roll has ended. A Scanner Darkly snubbed for Animation after they said they were considering it? Bastards. Cuaron AND Del Toro not up for directors? BURN IN HELL, ACADEMY. BURN IN HELL.

Well, it's not as bad as last year. Crash won last year so, technically, this year is already better.

That is right. How it didn't get a nomination for Best Original Screenplay is beyond me.

The Acadamy Awards are my yearly reminder that (With a few exceptions) I just don't like good movies. :^)

Personally, I haven't seen Babel yet.  I think it's released here in a couple of weeks.  The Fountain is out this weekend, so I hope to catch it soon, but I think the reason why it wasn't nominated is that it was probably too polarizing a movie.  I get the impression that it was a "love-it-or-hate-it" kind of movie.

nah i only "liked" it but i did think it was good though

as to the acadamy my dad put it best=  The acadamy is when a bunch of millionares give a bunch of other millionares pats on the back.  It has absolutely nothing to do with the movies themselves.

My movie choices tend to be more along the MTV Movie Awards variety.

When you get right down to it, isn't, say, The Mask integrally better than, say, Million Dollar Baby, just because more people actually want to SEE it? :^)

Nope. The Fountain is a divisive movie. You either love it or hate it. Very few people are in between. I thought it was the best film of the year, though. I'm not shocked it didn't get nominated. But, how it wasn't nominated for Special Effects does not make sense.

Obviously. I mean, since more people saw it than Inland Empire, it must be better!

OH, GOD! THE SARCASM METER IS OFF THE CHARTS! LOOK OUT! SHE'S GONNA BLOW!

Well now, hold on. If we assume that every movie's goal is to entertain as many people as possible (And I think that's mostly true) then the movies that are ACCOMPLISHING that goal are the food for the masses. If the people aren't swallowing the movie, then the movie's failing on some level. I'm kinda playing devil's advocate here, but even though (To use the previous example) Inland Empire may be the more ARTISTIC movie and perhaps a DEEPER movie, isn't the BETTER movie the one that the people have embraced?

But then, I suppose better becomes subjective. How about more successful?

I think there's the 3 distinctions people should have when looking at a films reputation: Success (how much it's made at the BO), the popular vote (what the people think), and the artistic vote (what noted critics think).  Perhaps there should be awards given out for all 3?

the "award" for the most bo success is called "the most BO success"  :)

Well - here's hoping Scorcese takes the Oscar home finally.... That would redeem the academy for at least this year imo

Scorcese is nominated for directing, and "Departed" is up for best picture, among other things.

This could be his year. Dreamgirls isn't up for picture... his biggest contender for picture is Babel. As far as directing, I think he should win this year.

I also think Pixar will be dethroned this year by either of the other two nominations, and Dreamgirls will win for anything it's up for (a political ploy to save face for not nominating it as best picture this year).

Yeah I dunno. I think that the art direction is a tossup between Dreamgirls and Pirates...

Anyway - Marty better win. There's no excuse for someone responsible for some of the most timeless movies in our generation being snubbed every year he's up for the win. For the record, I think Aviator deserved the best picture award as well, regardless of Leo. Actually - I think Marty is the only one that can do anything useful with the kid.

What, you were expecting CLEAR favorites?  In a year like THIS!?  I'm not surprised that the nominees aren't exactly stellar this year.  There were a few good or even great ones, but the Academy made some mistakes, and there are a few "meh" movies up for awards.  But come on - this year's pickings are the slimmest in years.

It sure seems that way.  I was just looking at his movies and he has got another tag team up later.  Although teddy roosevelt is my fav pres so i will be there.

Although lets not forget speilberg and catch me if you can.

He shouldn't win this year just because he was snubbed. It's just going to create an endless cycle where have to repay Greengrass for not giving him an Oscar. The award is to the most deserving candidate. Of course, the Academy is notorious for doing the opposite.

Nope. Cuaron, Del Toro, Greengrass, Eastwood, and Altman did a better job than Scorsese this year.

Cuaron is a decent director, but I still think Marty did a better job this year. Departed was a very good film, and only a totally awesome director can make Dicaprio look that good ;)

Cuaron and Greengrass are very skilled as well, but I just feel that my own preference puts Marty above them, especially this year.

Hypocritical coming from the same person who just said he loved the Departed yet gave no reasons why he loved it oh so much.

excuse me?

I said marty was deserving because the departed was great.

Yes i didnt back up the movie that wasnt the point of the topic.  I can back it up but you have never that i have seen ever backed up a opinion.  I apologize for being so blunt but its been buggin me recently.

Look the reson i liked The departed was the because the plot was well thought out.  The acting really fleshed out the charectars and set up a very intriging ( spelling?) conflict.  It was able to show both sides of said conflict without feeling rushed.  The acting from was great, i really felt the pain of di caprio as he tried so hard to infiltrate the mob while trying not to lose his soul and moral compass.

Come on guys. Can't we all get along? I've enjoyed reading this thread so far. I don't want to see it turn into a thread of anger. The only best picture nominee I've seen so far is The Departed. I made a special point to see it because I'm a huge Jack Nicholson fan and I wanted to see him in a Scorcese movie. Since I haven't seen the other films I can't really comment on who is deserving. Anyone sad that Borat got left out in the rain? I'm not that sad, but I'd like to hear y'all's opinions.

I haven't seen Little Miss Sunshine. The reviews were mixed and alot of the people I know said it was ok. So I was a little surprised to see it get nominated.

Exactly! It's easy to elicit feelings of tragedy. Kill the hero under unfair circumstances, or someone the hero loves, or make them suffer needlessly, show the negative impact of an act of random violence. The list goes on. Nobody's gonna watch a character get raped and think, "That wasn't tragic." It's SOOO much harder to get a whole audience to agree, "That was funny!" Look at how many more failed comedies hit the big screen.

Has anyone considered the artistic merit of the Naked Gun movies? EVERY frame, EVERY set, lovingly crafted and filled with so many visual gags that are so obscure, you'll never catch 'em all. And it's coupled with jokes that elicit constant one-two punches. THAT is film-making.

If the Oscars weren't almost 80 years old, I'd say they were having a mid-life crisis.

When he responded to people directly, it usually was.  But a good deal of it (even what he said while talking to people) was scripted.  Some of it was written by Patton Oswalt(!).  Like the scene when he's learning to drive and screams bizarre obscenities: "YOU FUCK MY MOTHER!!!"  Oswalt.

It was considered an adapted screenplay because the movie was about a character that appeared on the Ali Gi Show. I know that sounds incredibly silly. Think of it as Hollywood giving props to something that they can't pubicly give props to.
