Title: Your Game of the Year 2009
Post by: SmilinJackRoss on December 04, 2009, 09:25:36 AM
Another year is coming to a close, and most of the major releases are on shelves now.  So let's list our favorite games of 2009.  I think it was a great year for gaming, with some awesome innovations and experiences.  If you're so inclined, break it up into categories/genres/whatever.  Here's my list:

Game of the Year
A tough pick for me...there are 2 games that I want to give this to, but I don't believe in "ties".  So I'm going to give it to Uncharted 2.  Not only does it have one of the best single player experiences ever, with all those jaw-dropping setpieces, the online is also incredibly fun, especially the co-op.  The gameplay is super smooth, the graphics are some of the best I've ever seen, and the online unlocks keep me coming back for more.  Other than what I consider to be a bit too much hand-holding during the single player puzzles, the game is virtually flawless.

runner up would be the incredible Red Faction: Guerrilla.  They created one of the best destruction engines I've ever played, you can knock down any structure, and with a game design that incorperates that gameplay element perfectly, it's tons of fun.  Some parts of the single player campaign tested my patience, but the crown jewel of this game is it's online MP.  The addition of "backpacks" to augment your weapon selection keeps the gameplay fresh and exciting.  I've played this online more than any other game.

Best Downloadable Game
Without a doubt, Battlefield 1943.  As an online-only, competitive team deathmatch FPS, you would think it would get lost/buried under a sea of clones.  but this little title that only has 3 maps (not counting "planes only" Coral Sea map) allows you to not only to do battle in first person, but you can jump in jeeps, tanks, boats, and planes.  It's beauty is in it's simplicity.  Work as a team, capture waypoints, kill the enemy.  Unfortunately, the mics never worked, and they never bothered fixing it.  and I thought for sure there would be some new maps DLC for this game, but apparently they're putting all their efforts into Battlefield Bad Company 2, so they can capture their piece of the Moden Warfare 2 pie.  Oh well.

Honorable Mentions
Ghostbusters: The Video Game was pure nostalgia, and it really tickled me to be able to strap on a proton pack and go out busting ghosts with original voice cast.  The single player was a bit short, but in a good way, it didn't overstay its welcome.  While the online never grabbed me, it was a good game while it lasted.

Batman: Arkham Asylum was also an incredible ride.  The campaign was a lot of fun, as it was able to successfully incorporate a bunch of different gameplay styles and elements.  The combat challenges were foaming-at-the-mouth frustrating at times, but they were fun enough to stick with, and eventually I got through them.

Uncharted 2, hands down.

...

It seems like every great game that i played this year was actually released in 2008: Fallout 3, Rock Band 2, Mario Kart, Dead Space. I'm not much of a gamer, so i tend to catch on to these things a little late. Resident Evil 5, Arkham Asylum and Left 4 Dead 2 are the only things that stand out so far this year... besides The Beatles Rock Band.

There was a new Ace Attorney game that i never picked up, and Dragon Age looks pretty great. But i haven't actually played either of those... so i'm gonna' throw my lot in with RE5. Despite some of it's frustrating moments, i enjoyed that one quite a bit.

DLC is easy though: Shadow Complex for the win! 'Splosion Man was pretty fun too.

So, not really that much for me. I found myself playing catch-up this year. 2010 is looking like a goldmine though.

I don't think I can comment on this until I've played AC 2 or Uncharted 2, as I expect those might take it.  I really enjoyed Arkham Asylum (which I still haven't finished, yet all I have to do is beat the Joker), and of course, Dragon Age Origins.  I agree with Rude that Shadow Complex was probably the best DLC game I played this year.

CoDern Warfare 2.

I have to agree with Battlefield: 1943 being the downloadable GOTY also.

Wow, you should just get that over with...the Joker was a much easier boss than the Poison Ivy boss fight right before that.

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

Yeah, I played that some as well.  The campaign is fun, full of "wow" moments.  The MP is excellent as well, but the competition is so stiff, there's guys out there who are just so good, I have a hard time getting more than 4-5 kills in a match.  I'm up to level 24 or something like that, but I'm not sure how much more I'll play it.  But that game knows how to structure a MP system....the unlocks come at a regular pace, the customization of your weapons, the perk system....it's all fantastic stuff.

Does it have to be a game that was released in 2009?  Because I think Zelda: Twilight Princess for the Game Cube was the best game I played all year.  Those boss fights were downright epic.

Gah.  She was a pain in the ass.  Thank God there was a checkpoint in the middle of that fight, otherwise it would've taken me hours.

Little King's Story - Probably my favourite game of the year. I was well and truly addicted to this game for a while. Just couldn't put it down.

New Super Mario Bros Wii - Maybe not the best Mario game ever, but it was incredibly fun and will be a game I pull out and play again many times.

Deadly Creatures - Surprise hit for me. Didn't expect a lot, and it was a little buggy at times (no pun intended) but really original and fun. I really hope there's a sequel to this game.

House of the Dead: Overkill - Probably the funnest game of the year for me - partly because my wife loved it and wanted to play with me. It's a bit too short, but I'm fairly sure we'll be returning to this game too.

Honourable mentions:  All of the New Play Control games - especially Pikmin 1 and 2. And I have only played Wii Sports Resort a tiny bit at my parents' house, but it seems really great. I just ordered myself a copy and will have it in the next day or two.

I would die every time until I started constantly flinging baterangs at her instead of waiting for her little pod to open.

Right now, I'd say Fallout, although 2 days with Dragon Age is telling me it might take top spot before the year's through. And I haven't played New Super Mario Brothers Wii, yet. Mario games have the potential to rule my life every time... :^)

I just learned to ignore the goons that she kept sending up.  She'd kill them herself eventually.

If we're only counting games made this year, Fallout came out in Novermber last.  That'll make it easier for you, Pak.  :)

Wow. Was that way back in November? Feels more recent than that. In that case, I'm willing to give it to Dragon Age hands down, unless it does something along the way to make it terribly dissapointing somehow (Doubtful) in which case, I'd go for Ghostbusters. Super Mario might still take it all, though, if it's as good as it looks. :^)

I would say Dragon Age. Assassin's Creed2 my second. And then Modern Warfare 2. Even tho I don't own MW2 (I just bought it yesterday online) I still have played it at my friends house. And it is just amazing. And Red Faction as my 4th place.

Rock Band 2 is the game I've played the most this year by far.  But since that was released in 2008 I guess that doesn't really count.

At this point Assassin's Creed 2 takes the prize as my game of the year.  I'm a sucker for collecting things and this game has me running around like a maniac trying to find all 250 some odd treasure chests, 100 feathers, paintings, weapons, armor, etc.  Not to mention all of the side missions like assassination contracts, courier missions, races, and restoring your villa.  There's so much to do besides the main storyline that you can lose dozens of hours of your life to tracking everything down.  The main story isn't exactly short either.

Bravo, Ubisoft!  You finally delivered the Assassin's Creed game that you should have the first time around.

If I could choose a close second I think I'd give it to Beatles: Rock Band.  Simply because I was never a huge fan of the Beatles before this game came out.  But upon playing this game I grew to have a much greater appreciation for them (This happened to me with a lot of other bands in Rock Band 2, too).  It helps that this is a great party game, too.
