Title: Best movies I should watch?
Post by: Brak on October 06, 2009, 03:55:04 PM
Hello everyone in Rifftrax land. So i just got back from a mission for my church, and have missed out on a bunch of movies, and now am starting to think that there are probably a lot out there that i have never seen that are considered classic films, must see, and whatever else you might want to say that they are which basically means you need to watch it.

I have seen those 1001 must see movies before you die books and never seemed to think that they were the best source for me. Been trying to look online, and haven't really found much, so i thought it might be good to come to the "experts" that i believe are here on this forum and see if maybe i could get a better idea from you guys.

just a few things though:

-No NC-17 or Porno's that just isnt my thing

-Please take this seriously, i want to find all of the great movies that ive missed

-Would also love to hear why you think a certain movie is great, its great to hear how a movie has reached someone, even if it made you pee your pants.

I really appreciate it everyone if you can help me out.  I already have started to gain a pretty big collection of movies, (about 400 so far) but still dont feel that i have found a lot of really great films. I'm excited to see what ya'll come up with!

Before I shovel on a ginormous list, do you have any specific preferences? Kind of genre you like best, release periods, something like that?

No classic pornos...damn.

Well, have you seen any "classics" at all?  The easiest one to suggest would be Casablanca.  Great movie, fantastic characters, a plot that can be slow paced but never boring and builds suspense and tension extremely well.  And whether you like it or hate it, you can then turn around and get the Rifftrax for it.   :)

This might seem like a lazy and obvious answer, but the BFI and AFI top 100s have a lot of the great classics on them:

Hm.  I think you need to try the Marx Brothers before you dive head-first into their catalogue and buy a box set or something.  They made some classic movies, but they're not to everyone's taste.  If people are making lists now, I'll do mine!

Once Upon a Time in the West
Blade Runner
Field of Dreams

Roman Holiday
The Big Sleep
His Girl Friday
Ace in the Hole
Amelie
Passion Fish
Say Anthing
The Muppet Christmas Carol

Aw, I like that movie. It's not perfect, but at least it's not Space Jam. I guess you could always get your Looney Tunes movie fix with Daffy Duck's Quackbusters.

I'll add some that are classics but not mentioned by the others:

The Philadelphia Story
M
All About Eve
A Patch of Blue
Holiday (Cary Grant)
Carmen Jones
The Day the Earth Stood Still (the original)
The Thing From Another World
Freaks
Forbidden Planet
Mask of Fu Manchu

And I'd recommend The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - but there's some very brief female nudity (posing for a painting) so I don't know if that would be a problem.

How about something a bit older. I'm a silent movie fanatic. Since its October... you must see Cabinet of Dra calagari and Faust (1926). Truly amazing films that stand the test of time.

Brak, maybe list some movies you like so we know where to build from?

Rambo

It's about missonaries too!

I am open to pretty much anything, I dont have a specific favorite type of movie that i enjoy, i really just love all of them.  Silent films are great, old classic black and white i love, Drama, Comedy, Action, Sci-Fi, Stupid B movies, Thriller, and whatever else.

Some of the movies that i have in my collection if that helps are these

Big
The Shawshank Redemption
The Godfather
Momento
The Prestige
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Batman Begins
The Mask
The Bourne Series
O Brother Where art Thou
Pee Wee's Big Adventure
etc...
As you can see i kind of have a pretty broad collection. hopefully that helps give you some idea of what i like.

And I'd recommend The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie - but there's some very brief female nudity (posing for a painting) so I don't know if that would be a problem.

That is not really a big issue for me, its for art and that is fine.  R rated is as high as ill go with that kind of stuff, hence why i mentioned no NC-17 or pornos.

Well i will start making a list with what you guys have posted so far, thanks! if you have any other questions for me let me know

Congrats Brak.  Where did you serve?

A couple shows from the last two years that I didn't notice mentioned:
Burn After Reading (Starts out with a great Mormon joke that's actually funny)
Moon (Showed at Sundance.  Should be on DVD in a couple months)
Drag Me To Hell (comes on DVD next week)
Taken (It was mentioned, but it's a great PG-13 to help ease yourself back into the world of cinema)

By the way, don't watch the RM again.  It wasn't funny the first time, and it won't be any funnier now.

Cool! yeah i served in Charlotte North Carolina,  was out for about a year then came home on medical release.

Yeah dont plan on watching the RM, thought it was terrible before i left and have had no desire since to watch it

I'll second Casablanca as well. (Or if you need a more modern version, you could check out "Out Cold" which is a snowboarding movie with a similar plot.) Otherwise, you might want to try:

Singing in the Rain
On the Waterfront
South Pacific
Spartacus
Forbidden Planet
The Thing from Another World
Psycho
Airplane!
Blazing Saddles
The Producers (non-musical version)
The Godfather
Patton
The Magnificent Seven (Or the Seven Samurai)

That should get you started.

The Magnificent Seven (Or the Seven Samurai)

Both good movies, and of the two I prefer Seven Samurai.  In that vein I'd also add Yojimbo to the list, my favorite Kurosawa movie.

The Magnificent Seven (Or the Seven Samurai)

I'm illiterate and at first read I read that as "The Magnificent Seven (or Seven Brides for Seven Brothers)" and I thought "those are quite a leap, but I see the journey you took."  Apparently only I took that journey.  Reading is hard.

Anyway, my suggestions:

The Apartment
Chinatown (damn you Polanski for being creepy pile of creep)
Sweet Land (I will recommend it until others start watching it)

Skip magnificent seven... and watch seven samurai. Its the original and still the best.

Reservoir Dogs
SLC Punk!

I have a few to amend

Once Upon a Time in America
Oldboy
Ichi the Killer (great flick if you can stomach the extreme violence)
Perfect Blue, Millenium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers (ANYTHING by Satoshi Kon)
Requiem for a Dream
12 Monkeys
One Flew Over a Cuckoo's Nest
The Fly
Seven

Here's another one most people would probably pass by in the video aisle... Exotica. Despite what it looks like on the cover, it is NOT soft porn.

When it comes to character development Atom Egoyan has been one of my favorite directors. His stuff is probably too slow for those with short attention spans... but very thought provoking movies. Other notables by him are Felecia's Journey (disturbing) and Sweet Hereafter (very sad).

And for something off the wall. Bubba Ho-Tep (starring bruce campbell as elvis). A truly awesome movie!!

Student Bodies (1981) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OSEUInB6pJs). it is a spoof movie from 1981 that mocks the slasher movie genre. It has Richard Belzer from Law and Order as "The Breather". It does some hilarious gags like keeping a running body count, pointing out suspects, etc. it is mostly PG13(but there was no PG 13 back then) but is rated R because of one joke just to get the R rating.

hey, Brak, you have already gotten a lot of great recommendations. The best movies of the past year, I think, were the Pixar films, Ponyo, and Kung Fu Panda (all animated), but that's just me. there are lots of great movies on this planet, but here are the ones I can think of that haven't been mentioned but that are great (though who knows if you'll actually like them):

The Manchurian Candidate (original)
THe Haunting (again, the original--1963 dir Robert Wise)
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Gaslight
Sunset Blvd
Vertigo
Shadow of a Doubt
Strangers on a Train
Last Man On Earth (Vincent Price)
The Dark Crystal
(I'm in a Halloween mood, so these are all Halloween-ish so far. I'll try to think of others now)
Some Like It Hot
Best Years of Our Lives
12 Angry Men
To Kill a Mockingbird
The Sting
Howl's Moving Castle
The Odd Couple
It Happened One Night

these are foreign language films:
Babette's Feast
Il Postino
Shadow Magic
The Seven Samurai
Yojimbo
Throne of Blood
Castle in the Sky
My Neighbor Totoro
Nausicaa and the Valley of the Winds
Spirited Away

these two are best around the 4th of July:
Yankee Doodle Dandy
1776

and there are tons more I could say, but depending on what you have or haven't seen, that should keep you busy for a while

(p.s. it sounds like we're the same religion, Brak)

Yeah, it's not. It's not a bad horror film, but I wouldn't place it within the best 100 horror films ever made let alone a "best general movies" list.

Classics I like, off the top of my head:
Psycho, In Cold Blood, The 39 Steps, The Third Man, Touch of Evil, Ninotchka, Ikiru, A Night to Remember (BTW I found all of these at my library, but wouldn't have looked many of them up if not for allmovietalk.com).

Someone mentioned Last Man on Earth, I haven't seen it but it's on Hulu http://www.hulu.com/watch/46780/the-last-man-on-earth (http://www.hulu.com/watch/46780/the-last-man-on-earth).  While I was on Hulu I found another one I like.. http://www.hulu.com/watch/62386/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-forum (http://www.hulu.com/watch/62386/a-funny-thing-happened-on-the-way-to-the-forum)

Kids' movies I love: Dumbo, The Neverending Story, A Boy named Charlie Brown http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGm6MICgeYM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mGm6MICgeYM).  Rewatching it now I realized how adult the dialogue was after only 30 seconds.  Look out for the abstract Fantasia-like sequence near the end.
