Title: New Old Spice Ad (Featuring BRUCE FUCKING CAMPBELL!!!)
Post by: BBQ Platypus on January 09, 2007, 05:47:22 PM
HOLY SHIT!!!!!!!!!!  This ad is SO cool!  It's a 60 second spot of Bruce in a robe quite similar to the one he wore on the cover of Make Love the Bruce Campbell Way, featuring him talking about "it."  I'm not sure what "it" is, but I'm damn certain that Bruce has a lot more of "it" than any man on the planet.

When I first saw this ad, I was all like "Holy shit!  It's Bruce Campbell!"  It's a good thing nobody else was around who didn't know who Bruce Campbell was, because if they had said "Who's Bruce Campbell?" I would have torn out their intestines with the back end of a rusty claw hammer.

Naturally, I COULDN'T find this piece of awesomeness on the net.  YouTube is worthless.

I loved the seemingly neverending painting in the background of the longest sea vessel in history!!

Excellent ad.

Hm.  It's a nice enough ad, but Bruce Campbell seems an odd choice for spokesman.  His "demographic" seems to skew to younger people, who probably still think Old Spice sucks.

That's precisely why they chose him as a spokesman.

Yeah, I'm just wondering whether the coolness of Bruce Campbell will be able to overcome the "stigma" of Old Spice.

It is called "My Name is Bruce" and it is in post right now. Not sure if they have a distributor yet though. They thankfully changed the name from "They Call Me Bruce" I guess they never heard about the Bruce Lee parody with the same title.

If it gets a theatrical run I assume it would be like the Bubba Ho-Tep run. 2-3 prints at the arthouse city to city. I can't imagine this flick getting any kind of wide release.

Although it does have backing from Dark Horse and Image Entertainment. So at least it will get a DVD without a doubt. Image Entertainment is a pretty big indie dvd company.

This seems like pretty shrewd marketing to me. An Old Spice ad featuring hip young people would be hopelessly transparent even to hip youth, but Bruce Campbell sends a message of "We know what you like. We're cool too."

I'm not here to argue about the overall awesomeness factor of Bruce "FUCKING" Campbell... but I really don't think the commercial has much to do with Bruce Campbell. I would have to think that the vast majority of the audience watching those spots would have no idea who is, at least in regards to his status as a "cult celebrity". Sure, he might be kinda familiar to some people in the sense of... "hey... that's the Army of Darkness guy!"... or maybe "hey... wasn't he on Xena?". I don't think he was hired because Old Spice wants to tap the Bruce Campbell fan club demographic so much as he's a sorta recognizable guy whose persona/delivery fits the spot.
Title: Re: New Old Spice Ad (Featuring BRUCE FUCKING CAMPBELL!!!)
Post by: Sharktopus on January 10, 2007, 12:09:03 PM
I think they went with him for the persona he can portray, whether you know him or not. Old Spice is stigmatized as the aftershave of stuffy old guys, so they got Bruce to play an entertaining stuffy old guy, thus playing off their image rather than trying to ignore it. If you know who Bruce is, it's just icing on the cake.

One big selling point with this ad does rely on Bruce Campbell's cult status: word of mouth.

The Old Spice people, whether relying on industry analysts or not, chose Bruce because they knew he could make a great character for the spot, but also they knew that the people would talk. They'd tell their friends, and they'd tell two friends, and they'd tell two friends, and so on, and so on, and so on...

The buzz is already out about that cool Old Spice commercial starring that guy who was in that silly movie, also who was in some TV shows, and has some sort of cult following...   ;)

Before working here I worked for GAP Inc, which owns Old Navy, Gap, and Banana Republic, and we'd often laugh about just how....caucasian (?) those Old Navy commercials seemed.... And the Gap commercials were more often than not just random stupidness with Sarah Jessica Parker running around in some pink sweater....

What was funny was when people would come into Gap and ask "Where's that sweater I saw Sarah wearing the other day?"
And we'd be like..."Sarah? Sarah who....?"
"Oh, you know! In the commercial!"

Yeah....so you're apparently good friends with "Sarah" to be on a first name basis with her....

Overall - GAP Inc needs a major refurbishing of its image cuz most kids would rather spend ten minutes shopping at American Eagle for something cheap that falls apart than thirty minutes boggled down by hyper sales associates at Gap bragging about the product yet don't even convince you to buy anything.....

Even as an innocent, non-cynical eight year-old I knew that.  Seriously, I looked at the TV and my jaw dropped.  They were the whitest ads I'd ever seen.  I was really, really embarassed for anybody who worked for them.

I dunno... at the risk of being non-PC, I don't see a problem with a company targeting the people they know as their core demographic. I would be surprised if Gap / Old Navy / Banana Republic ever entered any serious competition with Sean John / Fubu / Phat Farm / whatever to be the current urban 'hipster' wear. I guess we could all bury our collective heads in the sand and repress our white man's guilt by throwing a few tokens into the ads. If that would make you feel better and maybe get ya off the soapbox, I'd be all for it.

I'm Filipino and Banana/Old Navy are my favorite places to shop lol (American Eagle too). But anyway - When people speak of GAP Inc not being able to compete against franchises like Fubu or Sean John - well they /have/ been competing and /have/ been winning (just not image-wise I suppose). GAP Inc is the second largest retailing corporation in the world, next to Wal Mart (facts they like to shove down our throats at orientation =P ). GAP has locations in Europe and some in Asia, and deals with more money than any other retailer out there.

Kinda typoed, but I'm with the sentiemnt.

Where I come from, the only people who even talk about "different races" are racists. It's an unnecessarily divisive and essentially incorrect label that annoys me no end.

And Kellie Aiken as, "Beautiful Woman!" I love it when the name of the generic character in the credits tell you what you're supposed to think about the character. :^)

Edit: Actually, it seems there are several "Beautiful Women," one "Beautiful woman on street," two "Beautiful Girls" and one "Hot Chic." :^)

Well back on the Old Spice is for old people topic....

I work in Market Research and my client in P&G, the makers of Old Spice. I do tests mainly for thier body wash/bar soap division so i get tons of this stuff for free. The other day my boyfriend was complaining about how he needed to go get more cologne cause all he had left was some crappy old spice he was given as a gift. I hated to break it to him that the free body wash he's been using is Old Spice.

Speaking of Axe's marketing, they had a new commercial in the theater earlier this week when I went to "Children of Men"  with hundreds of bikini-clad babes running and swimming.  Eventually, they all converge on one poor guy on the beach.  Seemed like they were as likely to tear him to shreds as anything else, like the Buffy episode where Xander's love potion causes every woman except Cordy to go insane with desire for him.
Anyway, haven't seen this ad on tv yet and it would have to be considerably shorter for the tube.

Edit:  saw it on VH1 last night and the full minute is on YouTube under "axe/lynx commercial"  Maybe some of it is CGI but I prefer to believe it isn't!

This ad is easily the coolest ad I have seen ever. I was at work the other night and it came on during a commercial on ESPN, and I yelled out "BRUCE CAMPBELL!!!" luckily a couple of people on the sports desk knew who I was talking about and equally liked the commercial or else I would of held my head in shame the rest of the night.
