Title: The LEGO thread
Post by: Invader_quirk on June 10, 2009, 09:56:55 PM
This is the thread for all you Lego nerds (assuming there are any) to post your creations! I've been obsessed with Legos for the past few months and was wondering if anybody else around here shared my interest.

Here's some of my stuff:

Hey! An actual Lego thread! And an actual second post!

SDCC Lego News- Lego announces DC Comics license with releases in Jan 2012 (http://www.brothers-brick.com/2011/07/20/lego-gets-dc-comics-license/)

Quote
Warner Bros. has expanded its relationship with Lego, granting the toymaker access to DC Entertainment’s complete library of comicbook characters and stories to launch DC Universe “Super Heroes” as figures and playsets.

The multi-year licensing deal, made through Warner Bros. Consumer Products, will start rolling out the new line in January, starting with 13 characters, including Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and villains the Joker, Bane, Harley Quinn and Lex Luthor.

The first toys will be shown off at the Lego booth at Comic-Con Intl. in San Diego, where 3,000 exclusive Batman and Green Lantern minifigures will be distributed to launch a promo that runs August-December, enabling fans to create and submit videos, photos or illustrations of the characters to win trips to Legoland and Warner Bros. Studios.

WB and Lego had already been producing toys and videogames around the Batman franchise, and will launch a new set of playthings around next summer’s “The Dark Knight Rises” through the Lego Batman collection. The “Lego Batman: The Videogame,” published by WB Bros. Interactive Entertainment, has sold more than 12 million units since 2008.”This partnership gives builders a chance to recreate the characters, vehicles and worlds of some of the most iconic super heroes, so they can relive the action and even customize it, a proven and winning formula in Lego construction,” said Jill Wilfert, VP, licensing and entertainment for the Lego Group

In addition, it sounds like a Marvel license will be arriving in May of next year.

Must sell kidney now to afford plethora of minifig purchases....

The farthest I've ever gotten with any Lego project:

I think it's supposed to be an alligator, or perhaps the space station, or a Neo-Orthodox interpretation of the state of the American Southwest as viewed through the eyes of an alcoholic field mouse who has somehow reached Nirvana.

All jokes aside, I've always loved Lego and the Lego community. Their art is a continued inspiration.

Especially Nathan Sawaya (http://www.brickartist.com/). You might have heard of him (or at least seen his work before), but if you haven't check out his gallery on his website. He's far from the only artist making a living in the medium of Lego, but he's probably the most well known.

Seriously, look at this:

The mind is boggled.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Further boggling.

I'll leave you to boggle over this one.

I think I have a half-finished Batcave kit somewhere that I need to leave two-thirds finished sometime soon.

Don't give up! I'm sensing there might be a spirit journey in it for you.

P.S. Those lego sculptures are awesome, especially the Conan one and the GRAY one. That guy has done some awesome stuff. (http://www.brickartist.com/gallery.html)

Incredibly important Lego news.

Strong rumors from the Lego fans that a certain animated cartoon show is getting a Lego theme. And then this showed up today via a leak:

(http://img5.imageshack.us/img5/2006/lc7t.jpg) (http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/6900/ybvd.jpg)

Strong rumors of a Simpsons set of Minifigs as well, after the Lego Movie set of them arrive.

Note, the set does scream "Hella expensive" though.

Apparently Lego was a bit against the "80's Something Space Guy" character in the new movie since his deal is that he looks damaged and cruddy, but apparently they embraced it to the point where they will have him with the broken helmet from the movie (no child teeth marks... yet).

Looks like anyone interested in the Simpsons house can pick it up early at LEGO stores starting this Friday if they are members in LEGO's VIP program (a free rewards program that gets you rebates on purchases from the LEGO store).

That's not them being against the Space Guy.  That's actually an inside joke.  The original figure had a chinstrap on the helmet that was notorious for developing cracks.   They released a more durable version in the late 80s.

Yeah, but LEGO were a bit bothered by that joke initially, then embraced it according to directors Miller and Lord.

Have any of you seen "The Brick" a gallery of LEGO art? It's magnificent. I saw it at the Philadelphia Art Museum. It's three dimensional Lego sculptures and two dimensional "paintings" (like the Mona Lisa rendered in bricks which is like pixels, from a distance it looks like the real painting, but close up you can see the multi-coloured bricks that make it up.)

It's much better than anything you saw at the Lego Store [tm] in Disney...

I'm guessing they have put more protection around the liberty bell by now, back in the 80s I was able to put my camera on the floor and get a picture inside the bell, you'd probably get tackled trying to do that these days....

Yep. Even got a cool trailer when announced with Homer and Batman going portal hopping, among other things. But instead of posting that trailer, I'll post this:

Yes, a Lego Big Bang Theory set is due out this weekend. Because really, we don't have enough physicist minifigs, do we? On the bright side, if BBT can get a Lego set, there's still hope for a Lego Road Warrior set someday.

Wow. Not the best build there. But it shows I'm not the only idiot who wants this set.

Back to Dimensions though, there's one world on the LD page that hasn't been mentioned yet, that of Midway Games. That basically means a Mortal Kombat set (which I think Lego would frown on), a Gauntlet set, or a set with a certain yellow dot eating man... Or a Revolution X set with a little Steen Tyler minifig. But that last one strongly depends on someone at WB having a brain anuerysm and approving it.
Title: Re: The LEGO thread

Let's be honest. If you give Leonard, Sheldon and Penny the Chima weaponry, the set instantly becomes much, much cooler. And giving the Chima figs little takeout boxes makes them a bit cooler too. It's a win win!

Apparently, Chima was supposed to be a Thundercats set until the licensing fell through.

We watched exactly one episode of the TV series, and this was pretty apparent.

It's the process for people to submit ideas to LEGO.  Someone submits an idea, they have to get 10000 likes, then LEGO will officially consider it.  Unfortunately LEGO can veto stuff if it can't be licensed, wouldn't be cost effective, or just doesn't fit the LEGO brand.  This is how the BTTF and Ghostbusters sets were created.

I would just love a Lego Satellite of love, Tom Servo and Crow... but 10000 likes? That might take a while regardless of how beloved MST3K is.

On another subject, a few months ago I got the Emperor's throne room in Star Wars and it was a pretty awesome build, but it took about 3 hours. Very cool build complete with Emperor, Darth Vader, Royal Guards and Luke Skywalker.

I still have the Emperor's Throne room Lego set from ROTJ. I broke it down about 5 months ago and put it back in the box with the instructions. Maybe some day I will break it out and rebuild it... but for now I really can't envision myself wanting to build maybe more than one, maybe two other lego sets. I'd really like to get a Star Wars vehicle set to build, something smallish... but if I ever had the money I would LOVE to build a B-wing fighter. I've always admired the way that thing was designed, and Slave I of course.

With the Saturn V set out, I've been very tempted to buy it.  But I decided I had to get a shuttle set first before the price went up even higher.  I picked up a used version of this on eBay for $112:

It was missing about 200 pieces out of 1200.  It's not nearly as bad as it sounds.  I had enough pieces that I was able to build it, and not really notice anything missing.  I just ordered the missing parts on Bricklink for $20.  $132 isn't too bad for that set.  It usually sells for about $180 used.  Now I need to justify buying the Saturn V.

This wasn't a lego set but I was in Toys R Us earlier tonight and they had what appeared to be a full size BB-8... for the low, low price of $200. Damn dude! That's cool and all but that's a lot of money for a toy.

4 (5 in Feb).

Until quite recently he was more playing with it while I put it together, but now he can follow the instructions and do most of it himself with a smaller set. The Juniors sets are really good starters.

I can't even remember my first lego set, but I do remember having a lot of space oriented sets back in the late 80's, early 90's, as well as a bunch of sets based around medieval times.

Yeah, but the 2 year old will get it faster than the older one did, because kids with older siblings always do, so you'll be building full sets with them in no time.

I don't let him play with them while the little one is awake. It would just cause fights. So he plays during nap or when the younger one goes to bed before him. It works out. We also have a nanny during the week with two small kids and they also can't be around lego pieces yet. Plus they lose shit all the time.

Signed up for a couple of Lego Make and Take events for my kid. I've never managed to get into one before they were filled up, and to get into two if pretty great.

One is for the Ninjago movie (at Toys R Us):

The other, cooler one, is Star Wars (Myer):

Both on the 30th. Can't wait! (And all free!)

I've decided to sell some of my older sets to buy the new Millennium Falcon. My old (much smaller) Millennium Falcon, my older smaller Slave I (compared with the UCS Slave I from last year), a Republic Gunship (I don't really care about it anymore), and a UCS Tie Interceptor (it was the first UCS, and not very impressive). All that should get me in striking distance.

Would not have guessed that. Looking at the description, it looks like there's an engine under the hood and other little things that my Ecto-1 set didn't have, so I guess the cost is justifiable (But outside what I'd personally pay for a Lego Set.)

My kids basically play with the lego figures. There are too many fucking tiny and individualized pieces in the sets that just get broken and end up as detritus in the bottom of the lego container. I think the specificity of them actually kind of hampers creativity.

I started putting together an old set from 1983 that I loved out of individual parts on brickseek, so that'll be something to do with them when I have it all back together.

Lego's weird. It falls between toy and model, but I don't see those fish things as anything I would ever be "proud" to "display."  It's not like they're high art.  I think the architecture pieces are closer to something "adult," but even those can't escape the fact that they're legos.

I mean the models that they're supposed to make. They instantly atomize into 1x1 squares.  Mine had very few of those, mostly big plates that were easy to find and keep in place.

I don't question that it can be art; I am suggesting that these are not art, but tat.
