Title: A Year At The Movies: One Man's Filmgoing Odessy
Post by: Thom_Serveaux on June 06, 2009, 05:36:13 AM
Yeah I'm surprised, but I hadn't noticed any threads about this in this forum.  I just finished it a couple of weeks ago.  While I enjoyed it immensely, (who knew that Kevin was so well traveled?)  It could be a bit of a slog at times. But...

A slog? I haven't read in quite some time, but I thought it was pretty delightful throughout.  It felt like Bill Bryson had decided to become a movie critic.   :)

I enjoyed it a lot, too. Particularly his most out of the way travels to exotic theaters and film festivals like the one in Australia and Finland. I liked his ways of trying (and failing) to give megaplexes a chance. Also, the Cannes film festival was a riot.

By 'slog' I meant for being only 362 pages, it seemed to take a looooooooooooooooong time to finish.  That was the only thing that bothered me.  As you will note in the above text, which is now in bold and italicized, I enjoyed it immensely...

I read it about a year and a half ago...I kept not wanting to put it down, and only taking breaks because I was exhausted and needed sleep. I would recommend the book to anybody with any interest in film.

I enjoyed this book quite a bit as well. I was particularly interested by the reactions he garnered from other moviegoers about some of the truly wretched films they were watching with him.

I like Kevin Murphy well enough as a riffer, but I think he missed his calling as a critic.  I think he should give that a try.

I just uncovered an audio file on my computer with Kevin Murphy speaking to a roomful of people about his book. I remember I could only download part 1. I'd really like to finish the rest. Anybody know where I can find them?  Thanks.

I actually keep this book in my guest bathroom.    When friends and guests use the restroom, they always mention they read some of the book and love it.

Maybe this is a new, unchartered niche for Kevin, "Books to Read Whilst Pooping".

Thanks for that. I'll have to listen to the wole thing. Last year I found part of that on Youtube and hear the part where he suggested that anyone who had seen Spiderman should see The Fast Runner. I eventually got it through Netflix and tried, really tried, but ultimately couldn't slog my way through it. Sorry, Kevin, I failed!
