Title: Kings (NBC)
Post by: Trumpysgirl on March 09, 2009, 08:52:46 PM
I've been seeing ads for this new deal everywhere and I honestly don't know what to think of it. It's being called a soap opera, which I don't understand but still scares the crap outta me, and it doesn't offer a single actor that I care about EXCEPT Ian McShane.

I think that McShane might be the only saving factor for the show, but I could be wrong since the series hasn't started yet.

My dad hates it based solely on the commercials.

I can't say it looks better than Satan's bloody bowel movements, but anything's possible.

It's the story of King David, I'll try to watch it, because I'm hoping the keep a Samuel type character about. Which means that eventually they'll have to do a seance scene and that might be fun.

Or they may completely dispense with Samuel and then it will just be a stupid soap opera.

Also what kind of big tough Kingdom has a pretty wee butterfly as its symbol?

Will the word of choice be cocksucker?  If not, no sale for me.

The same reason Ali floats like one?

Hmm I just don't see that working for a nation state though, unless all its policy statements are delivered in cocky proto-rap form. :)

Only a truly fascist regime would have as innocuous a symbol as a butterfly on their flag. It's to convince people they are really the good guys. Why do you think the Nazis had a sun symbol? The only thing left is puppies.

I'm going to assume that since Ian McShane's character is based on King Saul that we will see him attempting to kill David several times..........that should be fun :D

I wonder if they will ever get to the Bathsheba issue.

Ooh I hope so, heh heh heh, that has sweeps week written all over it, she's probably going to take a long old time in that bath.

But yeah see it has potential I think, but I rather fear it'll end up as a sort of Bible based Dallas

That wouldn't surprise me.

Can't wait to see if they carry on, how they'd deal with Absalom and his girly hair.  Oh and the whole Tamar/Amnon thing (people, if you're going to read only one bit of the bible, make it the section covered by Samuel 1 & 2 , Kings 1 & 2 and Chronicles 1 & 2*, that's some racy stuff right there :D)

* Your Bible might have a different arrangement of books depending upon which church it's been created for..

Hey.....John Peter McAllister in Master Ninja had a butterfly as a symbol of his family.  You calling him a wimp?   ;)

As far as this show....I've looked at the commercials....

i dont know why, its against all that i know to be true but I loved the first episode. Epic, cool, original, fresh, and well acted and written.

The world as we know it is clearly at an end.

Convenient that a few miles from fake New York, there's a barren landscape perfect for fighting wars. What if there wasn't? Man, that would suck. You'd have to have standoffs with tanks in the suburbs.

Yeah I loved it, and they included Samuel so I was happy about that. I thought Abner was dead on too.

Fingers crossed enough people liked it. :)

I liked it a lot.  Both Swedgin from Deadwood and Kareem Said from Oz?  Excellent.

I can no longer hear the line "The king approaches" without mentally transposing it into Bill's (or was it Kevin's?) goofy voice. See what you've done to me, MST3K/RiffTrax??

I loved the first episode, it was well acted, well written and beautifully shot. I'm only hoping that the rest of the series is just as interesting.

I am curious to see how the show will portray the friendship of Jack (Jonathan) and David, since there are several...ahem....interpretations to their relationship.

I think it was rather sign posted with the little exchange between Silas and Jack about the latter's "skirt chasing".

I don't think that they'll make David gay, perhaps that's what Macalay Culkin's character is for.

Ugh, David kissed a girl. Jack didn't. Do NOT start slash fiction for this already.

Oh I don't think that either, but they certainly aren't shying away from that interpretation of Johnathan at least.

Interestingly the David-Johnathan relationship has been the subject of slash type speculation way before (like centuries) the term even existed :)

I'll tell you one thing, if I were David and had seen the butterflies landing on me after the king had made it clear they were his own special thing, I'd have run like mad instead of just standing there grinning!

I'm thinking that it was possibly just a vision that Silas was having, since Samuel had already told him that God was choosing another.

I kept waiting for someone to say, "Oh boy, here he goes with the butterfly story again." I'd question how long I could watch a show with zero humor in it, but I'm still watching 24, so that answers that question.

Bring on the hot, gay Biblical allusions!

So I heard there was a secret chord that David played and it pleased the lord... does that factor into this show at all?

I do believe David can play the piano in this version....but you don't really care for music, do ya?

It was fun to see McShane and Cox in a scene together, they always play off each other nicely.

If they ever make this into a movie, they don't have to think too hard to cast Matt Damon and Liv Tyler.

I have no interest in watching this, but the ads have motivated me to re-watch Code Name: Diamond Head.
