Title: Rifftrax Members On STEAM
Post by: Agent_Ispep on February 27, 2009, 01:44:47 PM
Where are all those STEAM users at?

Seeing as Xbox and PS3 get there own Topic Threads, and it seems some around here play L4D, TF2, and other games on STEAM.

Why not own up and post your username. So Rifftrax members can come and bother you when your away from the Forum.

Mine not surprisingly is Agent_Ispep

Man, what, nobody has Steam?

I'm TV's Adam, as I am for everything.  Actually it may show up as tvsadam.  I don't know.  Is Steam case-sensitive?  It just logs me in automatically.

Always (ALWAYS) up for some Left 4 Dead.

Hey Insert Coins, I can't seem to find you on Steam.

And Ispep, we sure had some fun playing Left 4 Dead, didn't we?  Boy, if only some other posters would add their Steam names to this inexplicably languishing thread.  That'd really be something!

Give me a couple of days to develop a good feel for it, and I'll be ready for some co-op mayhem!

I may or may not be Spaceforarent on Steam as well. Pretty sure that should be it. Unless like someone mentioned it is case sensitive. I've got L4D, TF2, and Half-Life 2: Deathmatch.

well, since I have to get ready for work soon (overnighter) I decided to make a RiffTrax Round Table group on Steam. So go join it! http://steamcommunity.com/groups/rifftrax.
I'll get to actually adding stuff to it possibly tomorrow morning. If not...well it may never be done.

Somehow I already had Compound on my Friends List from a while ago, and didn't even know it was him.

Things are starting to pick up; I like that.  We need to find a common game that allows a bunch of people and get a Rifftrax-centric match going.  TF2, maybe?  Left 4 Dead on Versus?

...Call of Duty 4, he adds hopefully?

So I gave L4D a ride for the first time this morning, and let me tell you, I wish I hadn't watched Romero's Diary of the Dead on Thursday. I had that zombie blueprint in my mindset and was in for a huge surprise. Yeah, I got slaughtered.  :D

Witch = Bad, eh?  :D

I know I'm late to the L4D party, but w/ whatever time I've had to spend w/ it this weekend, it's excellent! After provoking and thus being annihilated by a witch earlier this morning, I had to youtube for some witch battles, and came across this bundle of joy (I apologize if by chance it was posted before)...

I can't wait to fire it up again, later tonight.

It just so happens that's what I'm using, and I had a problem trying to buy games or join group chat sessions or join friends in games...basically I couldn't do anything besides play the games. It was an easy fix though, just find where Steam is originally saved, meaning not the shortcut but the actual program (I suggest just going to "my computer" and searching "steam"). Right click on the icon and go to properties. Under the "shortcut" tab click advanced. Make sure the box for "Run as administrator" is checked. That is what solved all of my problems. If that doesn't work, try emailing Steam, or searching through their forums.

See?

And I have to say, I am pretty excited about L4D 2, even if it just kinda seems like a big expansion pack. But that does explain why it only took a year for a sequel.

Oh, and I just bought an Xbox controller for the PC, so now I'm better at the games. Except I still have a lot of friendly fire issues on L4D

Because it's more fun making posts asking why it isn't stickied instead of asking a mod to sticky it  ;D
I've got a bunch more Steam games thanks to those holiday sales, but thanks to a hard drive crash I no longer have them all downloaded, and don't have room for much on here (went from 500 to 120gb, minus the OS and other crap.)

Just got the two Left 4 Deads, been playing with a friend of mine.  Either I'm just out of touch with PC FPS games, or I REALLY suck at these games.  Playing "Co-op" on Advanced, I couldn't even survive the first episode playing on-line.  To be fair, I had no idea how to fight a tank, and every single tank seems to single me out personally whenever I play.  But they're still fun as crap.

I've noticed you can load other games onto the Steam launching pad, but I don't know if you can actually play them on-line with other people.  If you can, I've also got Doom 3 loaded back up ever since I got my widescreen monitor, but I've only ever played MP Doom 3 once, when it came out...and boy, was my connection crap back then.

Oops, originally had the wrong user name on here...Steam ID is greypatch3.

Finally found the group and joined as well.  Trouble is, now I'm not playing anything on Steam except Dungeon Defenders, and I burnt out on it about a week or so ago (maybe more, this whole year has been a blur to me so far), but I'm always looking to finish off them achievements, or help others finish 'em, or, you know, play this crap for fun from time to time, too.  Actually been thinking of dusting off Civ 5 again sometime soon, if anyone's ever up for that.

I just joined Steam, under the user name CAJones7. I joined primarily to play Magicka, which at present is the only Steam game I have.

I'm not really a fan of (or good at) multiplayer games, but if anyone here wants to suggest some good ones, I'm all ears. I'm tired of being manhandled by my little cousin. OTOH I utterly destroyed his Asteroids top score the very first time playing it in over 20 years.

He used to be impressed with my gaming ability... until he figured out I was only good at old games.

I absolutely hate item traders on steam.  Their very existence annoys me to no end.  It was even worse before I knew what they were and I would just accept anyone's friend request in good faith.  And then they would start with the steam messages... endless amounts.  The profile for the most recent friend request I got was the worst.

They have a sale for every season, Winter and Summer are always the best, Autumn and Spring are kind of meh. I was a little concerned about the winter sale this year because it usually lines up with Christmas but the Autumn sale was really late and just ended.  GOG winter sale is just starting so keep an eye on that, I would recommend Shadow Warrior but the Steam sale will probably have a better price. I wish GOG would be more successful because they're so damn ethical, but it's like a small business competing with Walmart, you just can't compete with prices that low.

Hey Steam? You know what would be nice? A little checkmark or something next to the DLC on a product showing me that I own it. Good Old Games tells me this. Heck, Rifftrax does this. But if  a product has 30 or pieces of DLC, I'd really like to easily be able to determine what to buy in an easier manner than "Click on dlc, see if the green text appears, hit back arrow, re-expand DLC listing on prior page as it's reminimized back to showing only 3 of the listings..." It's a pain in the neck.

I usually just "Add all DLC to Cart." In the cart they tell you what you already have (Which, yes, they really should do up front) and then you can remove the duplicate items.

Yep, you just need a folder labeled steam anywhere you want. you can move it around as much as you like too. One time I moved L4D2 to a different drive and when I opened I got a VAC warning though so there might be some risk to it. Now that I have an SSD I keep whatever I play most on the SSD and move it to a HDD when I'm done with it.

Yup. Close Steam, cut from old dir and paste game folder in new dir, open Steam, click install on the game, choose directory you moved it to, click continue/finish and it's there immediately. Just make sure when you move the game you move it to another folder named 'steam'

Like I said though I got a VAC warning on L4D2 basically accusing me of cheating. I've done this countless times with other multiplayer games and no issue. I tried it recently with Origin and Uplay but no dice with them.

Very cool.  Tried it and it worked.

I've also found that steam's big picture mode works really well.  Using autohotkey I made a script that lets me fire up steam from my 360 controller, and I also made it so my controller can wake up my Home Theater PC in my living room.  So now I don't have to touch the keyboard if I just want to play some games from the couch.

I wish the web navigation mode for steam was available for my whole computer so I could control it with just my 360 controller.  My hope is that when the steam controller is released it will come with nice mouse emulation and a nice text UI.

Ohh I get it.  That's how people earn so many badges, they use the marketplace.  Jesus that's addicting.  Thankfully I managed to only spend money that I made through selling other cards and items.  But I did waste quite a few real world hours doing it.

I'd really like to complete my Pinball Arcade badge, but I'm not sure I'll be able to save up the scratch for the $1.50 Star Trek card.  Perhaps if I get a few more Summer Sale cards, they seem to sell pretty reliably.

Anyone know of some controllers that work well with Steam?

You can use almost any controller for steam if your willing to fiddle with some settings. All (or at least 95%) of Steam games that support controllers are plug and play with an Xbox 360 controller, that also means that all the button prompts on screen during games are for the 360 controller. I use a program called Motioninjoy with a Dual Shock 3 and a Bluetooth dongle. Motioninjoy will emulate almost all controllers into 360 controllers making them immediately recognizable by steam.

You can buy a Logitec or other knock of PC brand controller but they are not very well optimized and cheap feeling. The higher end Razer controllers work really good but tend to be over priced.

If I was setting out to get a new, nice controller set up for PC and Steam I would buy the new Dual Shock 4 and an appropriate blue tooth dongle because you can bind the touch pad to mouse controls. Google around about setting it up for Steam and PC.

The Dual Shock 4 way? if yes your going to need to voyage into google, I know it can be done because I've seen it, I have not set up and configured it though.

I could walk you through setting a PS3 controller though.

If I was setting out to get a new, nice controller set up for PC and Steam I would buy the new Dual Shock 4 and an appropriate blue tooth dongle because you can bind the touch pad to mouse controls. Google around about setting it up for Steam and PC.
If I go that route, what update version should I get?

The Dual Shock 4 way? if yes your going to need to voyage into google, I know it can be done because I've seen it, I have not set up and configured it though.

I could walk you through setting a PS3 controller though.
Yeah,  I have a Dualshock 3 and wasn't sure which update number to download.  I do have the 64-bit Windows OS.

Anyone know of some controllers that work well with Steam?

I use a generic wired 360 controller that I got used from Gamestop about 7-8 years ago. Still works fine with anything that Steam likes to have a controller for. Setup was "plug into USB port."

If you want it to be wireless you need a compatible Bluetooth dongle.

(important) Install/setup the dongle before attempting to install motioninjoy/DS3

Install the latest Motioninjoy
http://www.motioninjoy.com/download

Follow instructions for setting up a DS3 controller.

Make sure to click the box on the front page of the tool that says:
Xinput-default Xbox 360 Controller Emulator (this is so all games automatically recognize it as an Xbox controller.

That should be fine. If your are using a dongle make sure you install it before even touching Motionenjoy. There is an error in the software that can corrupt your dongle if you don't do it in that order. Also whatever dongle you use will not be useable for any other blue tooth devices while Motionenjoy is installed.

I don't intend to go wireless right now.  Fine with having it plugged into the laptop. I have it installed and updated and restarted my computer.  The program, I mean, not the controller yet.

Do you have it set up so your PC sees it as a 360 controller. Some people don't like this because you can't rebind the keys easily but I, and most others, like it because it just works with any game that the 360 pad works with. With Steam open you can just push the PS button and it opens up Big Picture Mode. My Bluetooth dongle happens to have way better range than the one built into the PS3 too.

Yea I like it. It's A LOT better than a 360 pad IMO. I'm glad I set it up because unfortunately some games just don't work well with a keyboard for me.

So you were the recent stranger Steam invite. I clicked on you username and I saw that you were in the Rifftrax group and I knew were all right by me.

For some reason I've been getting a ton of spam friend requests on steam lately. It seemed to happen suddenly after I had 300 games in my library. My theory is that spammers have set their bots to focus on people with that many games because they figure I have more money or games to steal. The truth is that 90% of those games were gifted to me, or bought dirt cheap in a bundle.

I get targeted by spammers because I have the Max's Decapitated head hat for Team Fortress. I never play Team Fortress, but it's kind of a neat trump card to have. I used to blindly accept anyone, but than whenever I would, I'd be pestered with trade requests. (Glad I didn't accept them. When Steam put dollar amounts on everything I found out I would have been severely ripped off.)

It's tough, but I'm trying to play smart this year.  I'm saving up all my cards and cash in my steam wallet for next years summer sale, when making badges counts towards something more than just your level.

I have so many cards that I could turn into badges.... but no, I must be strong.

Absolutely. And let's say one computer is more powerful than the other one, you can stream the game from the powerful machine onto the weaker one over your network, without having to download it onto the hard drive, and getting the better graphics of the more powerful PC.

Or you can just download the games normally. They make it very easy to carry your game library wherever you go.

So was that winter sale a couple weeks ago their big year-end sale? I thought it was usually around Christmas proper. I ask because I recently unloaded my severed Max head and Lugermorph and have about $80 burning a hole in my Steam wallet,  but I don't want to spend it now if everything's gonna be on sale in a week.

There should be another sale. I want to say last year it started on the 18th. But Steam being the aloof asshole it is, it may just up and decide it doesn't feel like doing that this year. I would hold out until the 18th if you can.

That was the Thanksgiving sale.  There's going to be another holiday sale.  In fact, I remember seeing a headline saying it was leaked to be starting on the 22nd, which is tomorrow.

While on one hand the simplified sale they used last time makes more sense, I've been saving up my cards for a big sale so I can get a whole bunch of holiday cards or what have you.  So I personally hope they go back to their gimmicks, that were admittedly kind of fun.

EDIT:  Found it.  http://www.pcgamer.com/steam-winter-sale-begins-december-22/

I got a Steam Link and controller for X mas. I was initially super skeptical about the Steam controller but I feel most of the negative feedback it's gotten was unfair. I feel like a lot of people were expecting a controller that was better than a standard game pad and KB&M. Neither of those things are true and I don't think that was Valves intention. My experience with the Steam controller is that it is literally a Jack of all trades, and a master of none. That's not a bad thing because it's probably the most versatile gaming peripheral ever made. The level of customization on it is outstanding. There is literally nothing that it cannot handle on a PC as far as in input is concerned. With a little tinkering you can get it to do anything you can imagine.

The Steam Link also works exactly as advertised. I currently have it connected through an older WiFi router. There is a noticeable delay, although much less than I anticipated. There are also occasional graphical artifact and hitching. It works well for all games except ones the require super fast and precise inputs (i.e. Meat Boy, Downwell, Crypt of the Necrodancer). I suspect when I run cable to it it will work great.

Nice!  And well put. I didn't anticipate the steam controller to be so customizable, but you're right, that's its best feature. The track pads aren't better joysticks than joysticks, but they are better track balls than joysticks, and they are better button pads than joysticks.

And I've mentioned before that I don't have a steam link, but I do use wired in-home streaming, and it works great, without noticeable lag.

Ho ho.  I thought this was going to be like the Thanksgiving sale, where everything was on sale for a set price from start to end.  But I see that Far Cry 4 is $20 at the moment, and wasn't on sale at all at the beginning.  I've had my eye on it for a while, but didn't want to spend $50.  This lowers it into my comfort zone.

Oooooo cool.  I do love reading about args.

For those of you who care about badges, if you go here http://store.steampowered.com/app/253750/  type in "search" and then press enter (not into the search field, just anywhere on the page) a prompt will come up.  Type in 1v7531 into the prompt and you'll unlock a free Red Herring badge.  Read Pak's link if you want to know how the hell they figured that out.

So I've been tempted to pick up that Steam Controller + Civ VI bundle. I'm gonna get Civ VI anyway, and $30 is a pretty good deal for a state-of-the-art controller, but I have some questions:

1. It says that it requires a Steam Machine or other way of doing Big Picture mode. My PC can do big picture mode, but it's not an optimal interface for a computer. Is this a good controller for someone who just wants to use it to play PC games?

2. It's super-customizable, but the nice thing about my Xbox 360 controller is it works with just about anything right out of the box. How much of a pain is it to get the Steam Controller working with a game right off the bat? Is it a process to set it up for each game, or are most games pre-loaded?

3. I assume it works fine on games that aren't on Steam, right? Got a lot of GOG games I'd like to use it on.

Great questions!  Here are some answers. But keep in mind, this is coming from someone who loves his two steam controllers.

1.  Games do not need to run in big picture mode for the steam controller to work. However, to edit the controller configuration while playing the game, you have to be running big picture mode. If big picture mode isn't running then the last config you saved for that game will be loaded. You can edit the config for a game without booting up the game, but you have to do it through big picture mode.

2. For all games that support a 360 controller, the steam controller defaults to 360 controller mapping. You don't have to change anything at all. Also, you can pull up community recommended profiles that are popular for specific games. And of course, you can go in and customize everything, with new options being added regularly.

3.  For a game profile to be loaded into the controller that isn't the default desktop mouse mode, the game needs to be launched through steam. But you can add non-steam games to steam (like gog games) and launch them from there.

Hope that helps with your decision. I picked up a second controller with a game bundle too, so that I could have one for my home theater computer. Works great as a mouse from the couch.

Arcanum is one of those games that I really REALLY wanted to like. Very similar to the first two Fallout games, but in a setting that's a cross between steampunk and swords & sorcery. I even still have the original CD sitting in the bookcase right next to me. But I could never make much headway in the game. Mainly because I was far more interested in the technology side of things, which unfortunately is vastly more complicated and less powerful than straight up magic. And the two are mutually exclusive, which I felt was a huge mistake on Troika's part.

I SO badly wish I could afford to buy this at launch. I paid full price for Civ V and both it's expansions and never regretted it. But I had a job then.

Oh well. I'll have to be content with Endless Legend: Tempest (which is pretty damn good) for now.

Hi everyone! I'm new to the boards, and I'm also a member on Steam ["attackonmemory"; same name]. I'd like to suggest a game we could "all" get down on: called "Bralhalla"! It's a 2D-HD side-scroller areana brawller like the days of Super Smash Brothers - except they can't call it that, or else they'd be sued! Lol. New characters, new weapons; xbox 360 controller support; minimal system specs needed to support.

Hope to see everyone there! If nothing else, hope to hear what else you guys might play. I might have another game up my sleeves we could all get down on. TTYL.
