Title: DVD Cover
Post by: MrTorso on December 19, 2006, 07:44:03 PM
Here is my cover for Nestor: The Long Eared Christmas Donkey

It is available to download at www.mst3kdvdcovers.com now.

Thanks again to RUDE (http://www.rifftrax.com/smf/index.php?action=profile;u=89) for finding the VHS cover and scanning it for me!

"Year Without A Santa Claus, The" DVD  has Nestor on it, as well as the title show and another one.  Yes, all three on one disc.

I found it on DVDEmpire.com, no idea if you can find it on Amazon.com or anything.  *shrug*

Yeah I have that it just doesn't have anyreal usefull nestor artwork to use for the cover. It was released as a stand alone video in the 90s and I have been looking high and low for it locally to no avail.

Give me a chance to check the video stores in my neighborhood. There's a good chance that at least one of them will have it... then again, there's a good chance that it's covered with stickers and barcodes. Either way, i'll try to remember to check on my lunchbreak tomorrow and i'll report back~

There's always the sweet RiffTrax artwork. (Young master J-Proof's handiwork, I think?) It's not the retail art but I'd say it looks even better.

Alright, so I found an original copy of the Nestor VHS at my local video store. It's obviously been cut down from a standard box to fit inside a clamshell case... So, here's what we got:

The right side of the front is a little wobbly.
There's a sticker of the letter "N" that wraps around the upper left of the cover to the spine.
And, there are two small stickers on the bottom of the spine that read "Rankin/Bass"and "Kids X-mas"

It's probably worse than it sounds, but yer' all Photoshop masters anyway, right?!
I'll be scanning the whole thing when i get home from work tonight, so if you want a copy just PM me with your address!

Looks good MrTorso.
Did you have to do allot of "clone stamping" to fix that, or just re-do parts from scratch?

Some clone stamping and I replaced the whole sky background. It took me awhile to get the logo in decent shape too.

Alright... that's looking good. Very impressive compared to that piece of junk VHS cover that i scanned. Except for the cover shot, it's pretty much like starting from nothing. Maybe a few design elements or ideas... but this is obviously taking a lot of work. I'm glad that it already looks great, and obviously i can't wait until the whole thing comes together.

So is this the hardest one so far, or what?

Not so hard as time consuming. The stuff I do with Photoshop could probably be done way faster by someone who knows all the ins and outs of Photoshop. I learn stuff every day when i use it.

Subtle...  ;)

Seriously though, i noticed that mst3kdvdcovers.com has quite a few MST3K covers (go figure~)... but nowhere near a complete collection. I guess they're not even being done by season or anything either, they seem really random. Which is cool... they look awesome, but does anyone know where i can get a grip of ready-made MST3K covers online for free?

The seasons that i already own have been sitting in paper sleeves for years now. I'd like to get something to make them look nice and uniform while sitting on my shelf... and if they were made for those thin cases, that would be a huge plus!

-Rude

PS- Anyone still doing trades?

There is this one:

http://www.dq5studios.com/mst3k/

But it is the same thing just random episodes of whichever episode the cover artist wanted to make. They haven't updated the site in a long time though.

Unfortunately, yes, the order I've been doing MST3k covers is pretty random.  I try to get a hold of the unMST'd movie (for a better cover shot), and since a lot of these movies are very obscure, it can take a while.

I've been unable to do any new covers in quite a while.  Deaths in the family, the holidays, and moving to the bay area for a new job have seriously eaten into my available time.

But as things calm down, I'll be working on some new covers.  My goal is covers for every episode, Rhino release, DAP release, or otherwise.  I've also got a dream of shelves and shelves of MST3k, with each cover lovingly custom made and not just stamped out in the great Photo-sweat-shops by 9 year olds.

And there's nothing stopping you from downloading the template, making your own cover, and uploading it.  ;D

I keep forgetting that you actually run that website! Sorry for talking aboutcha' like you're not around~  ;D

Anyway, i took a look at that do-it-yourself guide... Man, you do alot of work to make those things look good. I suppose once you get in the rhythm it gets a little easier to crank those things out in Photoshop. But, i think my brain would fall out if i had to sit through all the way through some of those movies just to get a decent screen capture for a cover shot. You deserve a pat on the back, my man!

Maybe i'll take a shot at creating one or two myself sometime.
Either way... thanx a million for hosting that site, it's really great!

I used to have about a hundred or so covers that I had made, but my old computer had a nice little melt down, so I only have 20 or so still on my hard drive.   They are not thinpak, but if want to PM me, I can tell you what I have and you can have any you like.

That's what it looks like to me.  I think it's probably the best thing to come out of that CGI short. :)

The cgi stuff was pretty creepy. I'm glad they didn't continue on with that stuff!
