Title: (Christmas Donkey) Thoughts?
Post by: SecretAgentSuperDragon on December 19, 2006, 05:23:49 PM
So guys, what did you think of this as a short? Was it worth one less 20 minute phone call? Let's get your feedback. (This is my clever way of seeing if I should spend my money on this or not.... even though I probably will end up buying it) ;D

It's worth the .99 for Mike and toaster.  I'm glad I dropped 0 dollars for the video. Taped it from ABC Family and discovered they did edit out a minute for commercials but it was in Act 3 and easy to resync once I realized Mike still hadn't gotten to the point where M&J had arrived at the stable.
Mike reacted to the one real "Debbie Downer" moment in the story just like I did. Merry Christmas, kids!!

edit:  I tried it a second time and used the YouTube version after reading mSampo's comments and got to see the wildlife missing in the ABC Family version.

I thought it was great... Perfect choice for a holiday riff.

I don't wanna ruin it for anyone by mentioning riffs, but let's just say I feel like kicking my dog after watching it.

I thought it was hilarious as well.  Well worth $0.99...and I used the YouTube version.  I be cheap.

I plugged in the Christmas Tree, snuggled up to my wife under a blanket while snow fell outside, and we munched on Christmas Cookies while watching Nestor get the tar riffed out of his long ears. Loved every minute of it. Highly reccomended. :^)

loved it, but found out we have DVR and used that to record it and had trouble keeping it synched....  somehow I managed to get the video a minute ahead of the rifftrack after one of the commercial breaks

One of the other threads said the ABC version cut about a minute out, when Nestor is walking to Bethlehem, I think.  It was when he was walking somewhere anyway.

Tough to synch up right at the beginning (took me a few tries) but once I had it going all was well.  Hilarious-- way to go, Mike :)

Timing was definitely everything. If Mike was a split second early or late he'd be stepping on lines and the comedic rhythm would be thrown just slightly off. Once it was synced, it was awesome. :^)

Very funny.  Any notice that Mary looked like Jewel Staite from Firefly?

Just thought I'd add my two cents. Yeah, I'm a mod, but so what? I loved Nestor. I didn't realize how deserving this animated short was of being riffed until the time actually came.

A new holiday-time tradition is about to begin at my family's house...

I watch this every year, and like it a lot.  The riffing was great, timing is everything. But since it is a short one it's real quick to make you own dvd and sync it up, and that helps a lot.

The Ritalin riff had me rolling.

Fun stuff. The ass jokes were funny as well as playing up the "Merry X-Mas" everytime something awful happened to Nestor. The parodies of the songs were funny too.

I personally liked the mom jokes...does that make me an ass too?  ;D

I forget what was said exactly but something like "especially you man who killed my mom, I love you the most!" when Nestor comes back after the birth.  I laughed so hard at that.  I have to watch this one again.

Excellent. Excellent. Not a weak riff in the bunch. I loved every moment of it.

Really great. I have to admit I used bittorrent to get myself a copy as it's not avaliable locally, and it worked great.

Nice work Rifftrax!

Fine job! Very funny! I would have maybe liked two or three more DA cues, but that's my only quibble. I used You-Tube (thanks for the link, Conor!) and the synching tended to drift a little, but only a little.

Fave riffs:
Fa loves pa!
Skylab! Run!
So the wings are not functional at all.

Comments on the movie:
* I'm not positive, but I think I MAY have successfully avoided seeing this for all these decades. None of it seems familiar.
* So since when did Mary and Joseph follow the star? Somebody's confused.
* Similarly, since when is it the donkey's job to find a place to stay? Seems like Joseph could have offered some input.
* I'm guessing when the network execs complained about that, um, downbeat plot moment, the author said "Hey, the did it in Bambi!"
* Roger Miller should not have had six snorts of Old Grandad before doing the voiceovers. Major slurring going on.

I'm gonna tell my Mom on you Mike !

When I was little, back in the late 70's, I was super excited when I saw ads for a Christmas show that I had never seen before.  When the big night arrived, my Dad and older brother cleared out of the family room and let me have the TV all to myself - it was a very big deal.  I sat there with my little pan of Jiffy Pop and watched ... Nestor the Christmas Donkey.  I was traumatized.  I cried and cried and my horrified mother had such a hard time calming me down after what happened to Nestor's Mom that Nestor the Christmas Donkey was BANNED in our home!  So, I'm gonna go tell my Mom that you let me watch it again.

Mike's in trouble... Mike's in trouble...

Not too bad for the first Christmas special.

I quite enjoyed this one, I don't know why really, it just consistently clicked with me, the jokes in the last half particularly just had me in fits. I didn't have any real sync problems I noticed.

Fantastic!  I have had "The Year Without a Santa Claus" on DVD for years and never bothered to watch Nestor.  Friday night, I sat down at the computer with my DVD and my Nestor rifftrax soundtrack and burned myself a perfectly synched copy of the movie and rifftrax.  I love dvdshrink!  Thanks, secretagentsuperdragon!!

Nestor was definitely an attempt to cash in on Rudolph. :^)

I wonder if Nestor DVDs will be on sale now that the holiday is done. Hmm.  I'm off to search for a real Nestor DVD so I can watch next year :-)

That's actually a really good idea. Set up an Ebay alert on the DVD and just keep an eye out over the next year.

Ebay is probably a better idea than scoping out retail outlets.  I went to several places and couldn't even find it.  I found it at Walmart and talked to someone in the department. He said they don't mark DVDs down for Christmas but send them back to the distribution center for next year.  Jerks  :D

Very funny; I enjoyed this one quite a bit.  One of the best, actually - it's in my top three!

I don't think I could've sat through a similar one that lasted much longer; the glurge factor was just about off the charts.  (Well, except for the beatings and mockery and thievery and abandonment and tragic mom death and sleazy Arab merchant.)

Excellent as the riffing was, I did notice a couple minor mistakes.  While it was hilarious when Mike questioned how donkeys could knit (ref the socks Nestor's mother gave him), I had to wonder why he apparently deliberately ignored the narrator's mentioning earlier that the socks had been discarded by the stable owner's wife.  Also, as a knitter myself, I had to chuckle when Mike asked if the knitter of the socks had used the "bobble" stitch, because the socks clearly had no bobbles on them.  (Bobbles are basically a whole mess of stitches made in one small area, forming what looks like a puffy little ball.)  It was still a cute line, though.

Favorite riff: "Should Santa be around in 1 A.D.?"

I think I saw this special once when I was a child, and once was definitely enough.  Mike did a super job with it.  I especially liked it when he mocked the lame songs.

This one's going to become part of my annual Christmas viewing, along with the two MST3K Santa Claus episodes.

As mentioned earlier, Nestor is one of the "bonus features" on the Year Without a Santa Claus DVD.  I found a copy at Best Buy last week for $11.  Happy hunting!

I just downloaded the RiffTrax for Nestor and I plan to watch it this weekend with my RifFriends.  After reading all these comments, I'm definitely looking forward to it!

As for Roger Miller, he also provided the narration on the "Story and Songs" LP of Disney's Robin Hood (Miller was also the voice of Alan-a-Dale in the movie).  On the record he sounds like he was dragged into the recording studio at 6:00am after about 4-5 highballs the previous night.  Fun for all ages!   ;D

I picked this riff up a few months ago, and then lost the DVD that I had bought for it.  Finally found the DVD in my apartment this past weekend, and enjoyed the absurdity of the video and the jokes from the rifftrax.  I had never seen this before -- what a crazy story.  Donkey walks from the north pole to bethlehem, does 2 minutes of good deeds, and then walks back to the north pole to be treated as a hero?

He was never at the North Pole, that was the other donkey that told the story.  Still no idea how his old owner and the rest of the animals heard about Jesus so fast, or that the long eared donkey would be an important part of the news at that point.

Ah.  The narrator-donkey said Nestor was his ancestor, so I assumed nestor must have also been at the north pole.  Skimming through the show quickly, I see nestor was really from one of the "wild countries of the north sea".

That's still a mighty long walk!  Too bad God couldn't use any of the donkey's already in israel, but had to import one from someplace like Denmark!  I can't help but think of the kind of math problems that we'd get in high school math courses, "Given the average speed that a donkey walks, how long would it take a donkey to walk from the north sea to israel, and back again?".  And after that long trip, he's still LITTLE Nestor, about the same size as when he left.

Can't imagine why this never caught on as a beloved christmas tradition...
