Title: The Worst MST3K Movie Ever
Post by: ImOscardotcom on February 10, 2009, 06:57:12 AM
Forgive me if there's another thread like this, but I'm curious: what was, in your opinion, the absolute worst film ever featured on MST3k?

I think there is another thread about this (or perhaps it's just a general "worst movie ever" thread), but I'm absolutely certain that Monster A-Go-Go is the worst movie they've ever done - admittedly, I've seen about half of all the episodes, but Monster is by far the worst.  It's perhaps the worst movie I've ever seen.

I believe that's this thread. (http://forum.rifftrax.com/index.php/topic,9209.0.html)

Someone needs to revive that.

The one that jumps out for me is The Beast Of Yucca Flats.  It's so terrible, it goes nowhere, has no plot, the actors don't even look like they know what to do or say.  It's.....incredibly bad.

It has gotta be Monster-A-Go-Go hands down.

The whole "we ran out of money so look at the stupid ending we came up with" is priceless.

Yeah that is great.

You just spent the past hour and a half watching something that didn't happen and had no point.

Also why was it called Monster A Go Go any way?

Beast of Yucca flats was the only one I couldn't actually sit through. I just left the episode playing and wandered around the house for a while, then returned when the closing host sketch was coming up.

I think just to take advantage of the groovy 50's cool cat theme song.

Or, at the end, the monster just went go-go away.

The thing is I think I would have rather watched a movie that was an hour and a Half of a monster Go Go dancing then the mess we saw in that movie.

Attack of the the Eye Creatures has got to be in the top 3 worst, IMO.

Hamlet for the Sci-Fi era. It put me to sleep every time and I never fall asleep during a movie. I finally got through it once I had the DVD and could take breaks.

MONSTER A-GO-GO is the only movie, to date, that successfully put me to sleep. And yes, I was watching the MST3K version. It's a miracle Joel and the 'bots survived.

Remember when I once talked about the difference between movies that actually try to be good but wind up sucking anyway, and movies where the filmmakers simply don't give a crap at all? MONSTER A-GO-GO is one of the latter. Just horrific.

That one is terrible, and I can't even get into the riffs.  Once is enough for that one.

Well, Herschell Gordon Lewis did piece it together as a favor to his producer so I don't think he was getting paid much if anything.  My votes for worst MST3K movies would probably be Red Zone Cuba, Beast of Yucca Flats, and Monster A-Go-Go.

I waited patiently for my weekly dose of MST3K in those days, I even got up every Saturday morning no matter how little I had slept just to get my fix. I needed my fix whatever it might be and yet at least half a dozen times I was greeted by Hamlet and all was lost. I tried so hard, I may have even gotten halfway at one point. When I first played the DVD, I realized I had the opening segment memorised word for word, it's quite possible I underestimate how many times that episode defeated me. The vivid memory I held of several parts as I saw them one more time suggests that it may have embedded itself in my very dreams, taunting me for all these years.

I may watch it again sometime now that it is defeated though, free of the challenge of simply getting through it without passing out.

Monsters A-Go-Go was pretty terrible.  Nothing happened, it was just people standing around talking most of the time, so there wasn't anything wonky or dumb or whatever going on to laugh at.  The only real 'laughable' thing was the ending, but by then I had already attempted to kill myself several times.

Hamlet was another one in the same vein.

Movies like Manos and Hobgoblins are wacky enough that they are laughable even on their own, which is what makes riffing them so much fun.

I personally liked Monster A Go Go.  Had to give it a second chance though.

And another weird thing about the Unearthly is that Bloodlust has the same music track. It bugged me for a while, because I had the VHS of The Unearthly for a long time, and then when the DVD box sets started coming out, I got Bloodlust. And I knew I had heard that music before.

Monster a go-go never really aspired to be much more than it is, though. So, I don't think it can be considered the genuine worst.

I think the title alone makes I Accuse My Parents the worst movie done. Also probably my favorite to watch. Oh wait, how did I forget manos, hands of fate? That has got to be as bad as they come.

For me it's
1. Monster a Go Go - Bill Rabane's Giant Spider Invasion sucked ass, so how bad could his FIRST movie be?  It's the total package of ineptitude: false title, misleading premise, writing dead-end, foley mistakes, bad props, bad lighting, slow life-sucking action, and no gowns.
2. "Manos" The Hands of Fate - Had most of the features of the above, but they had gowns.
3. The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies - Joel's song from another episode (Mighty Jack) called "Slow the Plot Down" does not begin to describe.it.  There are scenes where the plot distinctly goes into reverse (i.e. Estrella's hypnotic pinwheel of doom.)  Add to it more padding than The Biggest Loser and you are staring at the screen praying for the end.

The first time I saw Mixed Up Zombies it both hurt me and amused me that they introduce three different stories that could stand as their own movies, but they never develop any of the stories--instead they show a bunch of musical numbers that have nothing to do with anything, then since they can't resolve any of the stories, the zombies just attack everyone. now that's well crafted screenwriting.....for a box turtle.

Funny, I actually think this is the best movie they riffed.

I actually agree.  I've seen this one more times than any other episode.  Heck, I've even had it on in the background while I've done other things.  There's just something so delightfully terrible about it that I can't stay away.  Maybe it's just the MST3K crew talking, but I just see it as one of those things that goes so far beyond "so bad, it's good" and "okay, this is just plain awful" that it comes back again into "okay, maybe it's not Doctor Who campy, but it's up there" level of pure silliness.

But, did it originally aspire to HAVE a monster? If it did, then it failed.

Just the fact that it aspires to be a movie, which implies that it is aspiring to entertain, is more than enough. I still maintain that this is the only film they did that fails on every conceivable level: story, acting, sound, direction, cinematography, camerawork, the lack of an ending.....Most of the other films mentioned here manage to pull off a couple of these things (most of them you can actually see and hear pretty well, which is not the case with this film). And let's not forget the fact that most of the other MST films at least HAVE an ending!  I think this is not only the worst film they ever did, it's the worst film ever made.

Monster A-Go-Go feels to me like they totally finished the movie, but then some dude was carrying the master reels and dropped them in a mud puddle, and they had 24 hours to turn it in and most of it was ruined, so they just patched together whatever they could find. :^)

The Muck Bucket of Dr V was a walk in the park next to The Castle of Fu Manchu.

Didnt Monster A Go-Go have a sceen of a doctor answering a ringing phone and the phone ring was just some stage hand going "ring ring" and they never bothered to fix this in post production?

Even the guys behind "Attack of the the Eye Creatures" were ashamed of that.

Watched "Robot vs The Aztec Mummy" yesterday and THAT was a horrible movie.    Zero frights or any tension whatsoever.

I haven't seen all of the episodes yet, far from it. So far though my vote would go to Hamlet. That one is painful. I find Manos a treat compared to it. I didn't even think Red Zone Cuba was really that bad.

Close to Manos I would put Catalina Caper.  It's bad enough to make you wish you hadn't heard of it.

The Skydivers was the worst for me. I mean, I like coffee and everything, but damn...

Took me many attempts to make it all the way through that one.

Monster a go go and Hamlet. Both sucked pretty bad.

Manos? The Hands of Fate? Yes. I would say that was the worst as did Trace and Joel, both said they never say never but don't won't to riff on it again for CT, as it was more of a chore and not fun. I don't know what the others think. Although Trace said Monster A-go go is a close second.

I say monster-a-go-go or skydivers. Monster A-go-go is dull and there is no pay off.. Skydivers is just downright dull!

I have yet to make it through a few mstk's (there pretty bad) but I made it through "monster a go go" so that's out.. :)

I think hamlet is one of those that I haven't made it through.. and it's a tough watch..

I really don't get the hate for Hamlet.  I really enjoy that one.
The riffing is really great on that one. What makes it hard to watch is the sparse production and language. And in my case, I hate Shakespeare, that play in particular.

Used to despise Batwoman, but it grew on me, now I love it.

But if I were to choose my least fave I'd go with Starfighters.  What is this movie about anyway?

But the episode gave one of their best segments, United Servo Academy Chorus

Don't forget the Poopie Suit.

I don't know...I think I've found the more lethargic the gags written, the harder it is to get through the movie, no matter how bad it is.  This generally means that the older the episode, the less likely I am to get through it.  As bad as Manos is, the episode itself is chock full of memorable bits, and despite making the SOL crew cry at its stupidity, the gags for Invasion of the Neptune People and the infamous "Hitler Building" scene make up for a lot of its unpleasantness.  Yet, Women of the Prehistoric Planet is technically not that bad of a film, what with it actually having sets and a plot, but the gags just don't get me as well as later episodes would.  So, I'm not sure if I'm as good a judge in terms of how 'bad' the movie is, since they make some of the worst easiest to sit through, whereas when they have an off episode, it can make even an average movie hard to get through.

I did survive Blood Waters of Dr. Z uncut and unMST-ied, so I guess that one is out of the running, and that one's a pretty bad film.

I've never got the hate for the Hamlet episode either, but then again I first watched it while studying and analysing the actual film so I could watch it and technically call it revision, as well as the fact that it meant I had something dedicated to gleefully mocking what I supposed to be taking seriously which is always a plus.

I would have to say that the worst film I've seen MST3K'd so far would have to be "The Castle of Fu Manchu". I've tried to watch Starfighters and Red Zone Cuba several times and never made it all the way through, though that's actually because outside things keep on interrupting my viewings of the episodes, not because of any inability or want to actually get through the entire things. At this point though, it is quite possible that these films are so bad that God doesn't want me to watch them all the way through.

No votes for Future War? Cyborgs with attack dinosaurs, an exhooker nun, and enough pretentious moralizing to make you gag?

Yeah, but I don't think that it's ridiculous makes it the worst.  It's one thing to be dumb, it's another to be excruciating.

Tried watching Hamlet last night and it was a real struggle. Made it further than I did with Monster a-go-go though, that would be my pick for worst.

Is it just me of was Hamlet's step dad/ uncle dubbed by Ricardo Montalton ( Mr Roarke from Fantasy Island ).

I'm on team Fu Manchu.  No matter what I can't follow it.  I makes less than zero sense.

I tend to give Manos a pass - I don't consider it a finished movie.

I can't really disagree with Monster a Go-Go - it's a tough one, and as odd a turn as it takes, you can kinda sorta follow it.

I also have a special place for Kitten with a Whip.  Something about that movie rubbed me the wrong way.

I'm OK with Hamlet, even thought that episode pretty much guaranteed that my then girlfriend, now wife, does not tolerate MST3K very well.  It doesn't bother me enough that I don't enjoy it still.

I personally have no idea what happens in the Painted Hills. Every time I try to sit through it, my mind wanders off to literally anything else...like counting floor tiles or thinking about where Coily the spring sprite fits into God's plan.

Painted Hills kind of blew my mind - I had never seen a Lassie movie, and I had a miniature Collie at the time I first saw it. I kept trying to figure out why my clever doggy couldn't climb in and out of windows or chase bad guys around the wilderness. I've only watched that episode a few times but I think I like it ok.
