Now that marijuana (aka "reefer", "bud", "stick", "whoopie doopie", "happy grass", "tingle weed", "Abe Lincoln", "the halt", "muffin", "chew", "altoid", "the Fonz", "little Ricky", "sleestack", "chumba wumba", "red dynamite", "the oaf", "fat man", "little boy", "Richard Milhouse Nixon", "Area 51") has been eliminated as a scourge, it's interesting to go back and look at the film that was almost singlehandedly responsible for its demise. Yes, Reefer Madness let the world know that even a single dose of marijuana (aka "whip scorpion", "Batman", "Holyfield vs. Lewis", "the Kremlin", "babelfish", "Mason Reese", "chowhound", "slab bacon") caused insane laughter, enhanced skill at ragtime piano, the inability to avoid hitting old men with your car, and defenestration.

Mike, Kevin and Bill light up...THE STUDIO to take on Reefer Madness.

Note: We consider this a brand new RiffTrax as it is vastly different from Mike's previous solo take. Available in MP3 and VOD!

Any chance of getting a .RIFF edition of the three-way commentary, or does the availability of a VOD regrettably preclude that?

So, will ANY other copies of Reefer Madness work with this?  I have the Legend Films version, bought it when it first came out, but its in storage on the other side of the country.  I really don't want to have to buy the VOD version but I tried syncing the riff to a downloaded copy from archive.org and it just isn't working.

The true answer has to be "we don't know."  Since the movie is in the public domain, there's no way to test every version.  When we first started out, we were going to release the original commentary track, like we did for NOTLD and Plan 9, but scrapped it because it didn't match up with the version we found on Google Video.

Since the copies of the movie can come from anywhere, that's why we put on the product page: The audio commentary is only guaranteed to work with the Legend Films edition of Reefer Madness (available by clicking the "Get the DVD" button on the right.)

It probably isn't worth trying it out with other copies of the movie.

Well, I bought a used version for 5.98 on the same link, so I HOPE it's the same Legend Films version.. :scared:

This is the funniest god damned riff I've ever heard.  I wonder if I'd laugh more if I was stoned?

Haven't tried that in over thirty years.  Maybe I saw this movie and learned an important lesson? :-\

Just downloaded the VOD versions (mp4, DIVX and mpg) and I have one question that I should know, but sadly I dont!

The "high quality" mpg version, if I just burn that on a DVD as a data file, will that play in my DVD player hooked up to my TV?    Is there some sort of conversion that must be done first?

Thanks all.

I am sure you would, but I doubt you'd know what you were laughing at.

We are actually still working on it... so you can either not wait for it and get the VOD version instead, or buy the audio version now and wait for the .riff to get added to your account once we put it on the site :)

If I'd have read the 1st page, I wouldn't have bought the .mp3 and movie on Amazon :-[

BUT, I went ahead and payed the $9.99 so I can make a DVD version AND have a copy on my BlackBerry Bold :highfive:

PSL: You should just use DVD Flick and it'll convert & burn it to a usable DVD format 8)

Thanks, I believe I have DVD Flick on my home PC.

Yeah, having the mobile phone version (blackberry or ipod) is a great thing, isn't it?

Basically it depends on your DVD player.

We have two DVD players in our house, one does play mpgs and one doesn't.

Cool, my DVD player does play mpgs, but since I have DVD Flick, might as well make it universal.

All of my college chums in the dorm here just watched the movie musical for my birthday a couple of weeks ago, which I had never seen before, so we've all been in a Reefer Madness mood. I just watched the Mike solo version last week, so this was certainly a pleasant and appropriate surprise.

As with the Plan 9 riffs, I feel like there were a few lines here and there that Mike delivered better in the original riff, and a couple very funny lines got cut out, but overall, it was an improvement and a very enjoyable track.

That said, I'd prefer riffing unique films to re-riffing the same old films any day (no matter what the product description says, this riff was very similar to the solo riff). There are so many great, old public domain movies out there, why riff one more than once? Especially when the first commentary was so good?

I mean, come on, we're not Cinematic Titanic ;)

Insert Coin(s), congrats on watching Reefer Madness the Musical, it is a personal favorite of mine (plus Miss Bell is swell).

I can't believe you are in college, I listened to your pokemon Iriff and loved it!!  Wow props to you for being such a talented writer and riffer at such a young age, plus while dealing with a collegiate workload.  Anyways keep up the good work and make sure to enjoy college as much as you can while you are there!!

I have seen Mike's original Reefer Riff and am waiting until friday payday to buy this one, does everyone feel that it is different enough to warrant a purchase?

I just finished watching the new 3 person riff and it was one of the 5 funniest they've ever done.  It was awesome and now I crave Doritoes really badly.

Very funny Rifftrax. Although it was billed as being completely different than the original Mike only commentary, yet almost every riff he made was translated over word for word. Plenty of additional jokes, though, and I do think the multi-person format sound better and improves the overall fun tone of the Rifftrax.

FWIW, the MP3 will NOT sync with the Netflix-rentable version.

My usual process is to convert both the DVD audio and the Riff to 48Kbps WAV files align the sync line on both time-wise, then merge them. I aligned the two WAV files by the first sync line, but they are out of sync by 2.5 seconds by the second sync line and by 2min 12sec by the last sync line (I can only guess that the movie soundtrack's original conversion sample rate was not the same as the Riff's).

I wanted to get the colorized/Mike-riffed version anyway, so now it's on it's way. :)

Yeah, we don't know if it will work on any other versions besides the Legend Films version, so we don't recommend trying it.
