CINEMATIC TITANIC LIVE! WINTER TOUR.
We've been getting pleas from people from all over the country to come do a live show near them. Well, the pleas of those in five particular cities are about to be answered - we're stoked to announce the dates and places for our next collection of live shows!
FEB 13-14th - SAN FRANSICO, CA - Marines Memorial Theatre
FEB 20-21st - BOSTON, MA - Somerville Theatre
FEB 27-28th - CLEVELAND, OH - Hanna Theatre
MAR 8th - AUSTIN, TX - Paramount Theatre
MAR 13-14th - SEATTLE, WA - King Cat Theatre
Looks like I might have to make a little trip to SF :o
-
FEB 20-21st - BOSTON, MA - Somerville Theatre
SO THERE!!
-
Here is a link to tickets for SF and Boston. They have some sort of pre-sale starting on the 19th. Hopefully I can find a password for the presale. God I hate ticketmaster....

Hopefully since they are doing two nights, there will be a different film each night.

Ha! I guess you can ignore the email I just sent you. Nevermind!
-
Austin IS close to Houston..................
Of course, I WAS in St. Louis the same weekend they were there and I went to a hockey game instead.
-
...
What an odd place for the SF shows. I mean, that's an actual for-real theater... strange. I can bet seating in that old place is going to be uncomfortable after a coupla' hours. Anyway, i'm down for hanging out with any of yous before or after the show for a drink or twelve. That is, once i've decided which night i'll be attending. I doubt they'll be doing two different films.
And if you're on the CT mailing list, they'll be sending out a code for the Jan. 19th presale.

Very nice to see CT able to visit more locations. Still none which are close enough to me, but it's a good sign. Best of luck!
-
If you aren't on the CT mailing list then you might want to sign up. They will be sending links and a password for the pre-sale tickets that go on sale 0n the 19th. Still no word on if they will be riffing 2 movies or just 1 each night...

I've signed up for the list two, three, or maybe even four times now (back when they were just starting up), and keep finding myself not on it. I've given up joining. I'll follow their adventures via the web site. That's been good enough to catch all the releases on the day of release.

Have you tried joining lately? 'cause they fixed that problem a long time ago. All your original attempts would've expired after a couple of days.
Edit: I wouldn't count on their website for info. They don't seem to update it very often.

Yeah, I should probably sign up again, especially if they are live shows in a lot of new locations. Good idea.
-
Hvae they sent out the codes yet? I will be going to one of the SF shows. I am on the list but it's possible I may have accidently deleted it.

No codes, no info on films being riffed or if there will be different movies each night (when they do 2 night runs).

I just got an email with the codes. Like, just about 2 minutes before I read your message here!

Still no stop in the Charlotte, NC area?! >:(

A different movie in every city? Madness!

Did anyone notice the "special guest"?? Dave"Gruber" Allen!!! I miss "The Higgins Boys and Gruber" although his Naked Trucker stuff is pretty good too.
I wonder if we are going to get new "not yet released" films. That is what I need to know..

Which now makes sense because I finally watched Santa Claus Conquers the Martians and he is on the show now!!

Got second row for the Saturday show here in Boston.
-
Just got mine for Saturday night in Cleveland. Of course, I live in central NY, so I'm taking a train and basically going a whole day without sleeping, so I hope Cleveland has so relatively cheap attractions for me to go to for the day...
Any one else traveling far to see them?
-
...
I guess we'll be seeing Cinematic Titanic for Valentine's Day. How... uh, romantic? Anyway, got my tickets and they were surprisingly far back for a morning presale. Oh well, it's a fairly small theater. I was tempted to go on both nights, but the bill came out to one hundred dollars for just two tickets... ouch!
-Rude
BTW- That's Barbarella in the advertisement, right? Hmmm...

Pay no attention to the figure with a bat hiding in the shadows near your door. It's not me. And I'm not trying to steal your ticket. I swear.

...
I don't think you have to worry about it selling out yet. This is still only the presale period, the tickets won't go on sale to the general public for a little while now. Besides, even the first few rows of the balcony are prime seating for such a small venue... especially for what is basically just a movie screening. Speaking of which... what's the stage set-up for CT? I hear it's a little more elaborate than the Rifftrax shows.

got the ticks! any word on the movie yet?

FEB 20-21st - BOSTON, MA - Somerville Theatre
SO THERE!!
Some friends and I are planning on going to this, too but the prices seem CRAZY
- is it normal for a riffing event like this to cost $38 each?
Maybe I'm just a n00b?
-
Don't forget TM fees :gouge:. RiffTrax Live was only $28 when I saw them.
-
ya it seemed a little expensive which is why im glad my dad wanted to go so he got the tickets 8)
-
I'm 'onna be up visiting my friend(enemy) up in Seattle in March, JUST in time to see Cinematic Titanic. Wooo!!!
-
Don't forget TM fees :gouge:. RiffTrax Live was only $28 when I saw them.
The last RiffTrax Live show I went to (Over the Top in SF) cost me $1000 in total.
-
Checked the CT site tonight and lo and behold they are now saying that it will be new flicks each night..... That sucks... I could have had second row for both nights at the time of the presale but I wasn't willing to spend the $188 on the possibility that both nights could be reruns from the DVD releases... Why did they have to wait to announce the fact that they will be new flicks??
-

Because they hate you. On a personal level. *shrug* That is pretty lame.

A different unreleased film each night. That's pretty impressive actually.

I think they mean a different movie each night where they are doing two shows in one city. I don't think they mean 9 different movies for each night of the whole tour.
-
...
Heh, heh... can you imagine? A totally different movie at each stop? There would be groupies following them around to every city like Deadheads!
Although, if they have two movies on deck... i wonder how they're going to decide which single-performance city gets which movie. I suppose all the early stops on the tour will be to work out the bugs. Then you guys later will get to see the finely tuned, road-tested machine that is Cinematic Titanic live.

morning after our valentines day show of dynamite brothers had a great time! the rian decided t ohold off until later so we could all have a great evening at the marines memorial theater that night. before the show mary jo and Trace were out shilling their wares and i managede to snag a photo with trace amongst the crowd he said the movie was gonna be a good one and he did not lie.
Dyanamite brothers was a real train wreck of a film chock full of doughy racist slobs and stereotype slinging asians and black people all doing overwrought kungfu. and there is a mute (I won't ruin how this mute fits in but it is to good to be true) it was amazing.
I enjoyed the preshow fun with Gruber that was one section that this show definately had the rifftrax live show beat on, lots of fun with Gruber and the gang I particularly liked joel's bit (I won't spoil it in case he makes good on his promise to use it at every other show), and convoluted man.
afterwards they had a good long meet and greet and signing and although the prices weer ridiculuously pumped up for the live show 25 bucks for a dvd 15 bucks for the photo!!??(they pretty much sold out too so I think they made a fortune) a good time was had by all and, I being a cheapskate just brought my gila monster disc to get signed by everyone.

I apologized to J Elvis for having a episode he had no part in. he graciously signed anyways and said that he would sign it just so kevin couldnt sign it! Kevin if you are reading this that is clearly a challenge, now you have to bring a rifftrax live show to the bay area and sign the dvd just to prove him wrong!
thanks CT come again soon! (anybody else there?)
-
Sounds like fun..... thanks for sharing the photos.
Kevin Trace looks good with a beard.
-
(anybody else there?)
Ha! I saw you there. I even saw you get that picture with Trace... well, kind of. I might've had my head turned at the time <cough.> There are a few of my own from before the show, but they look horrible and i won't be posting them. Although i did get to talk to Josh, Trace and MJ for awhile. Not to mention RAD... who was extremely nice to me and my girlfriend.
I really dug the pre-show stuff. It was a lot of fun, and the movie was great. I mean... not actually great, of course. Pretty horrible actually, but the crew put on an awesome live show. They were arranged around the screen in the same way as on the DVDs, minus the scaffolding. And they seemed to be loving it. Josh and Joel were constantly laughing back and forth, and giving low-fives for jokes that went over well. MJ kept making faces at the audience, and there was some random banter. So it's a better performance than most their DVDs, and definitely a better experience.
Oh, yeah. Every single joke is not screamingly, laugh-out loud at ear-splitting volume funny... I'm talking to you, girl directly behind me!
The crew said they were going to hang around after the show, but i couldn't stay. I have never seen such a small theater lobby in my life. That was definitely some kind of fire-code violation going on there. Plus, it was Valentine's Day... so we had plans for the rest of the night.
All in all in was a lot of fun. My girlfriend still prefers Rifftrax, of course she has a crush on Mike. But i really can't decide. Although, i would give a few extra points to CT for having a little warm-up show at the beginning, and a little "Greatest Riffs" thing at the end. Great event... hope they come around again soon!

Just two more days until the show I'm going to! So if you're in Cleveland and see a kid with some bright green converse on, odds are it's me. Feel free to say hello

Anyone else going to the Seattle show on Friday?! If you see some guy in all black sniffing hand sanitizer, that's the Beef. :highfive:

I'll be at the Seattle show on Saturday.

From MST3K Info:
We have some info on the next leg of the current Cinematic Titanic tour.
The first stop is Atlanta’s Woodruff Arts Center. Friday, May 15, and Saturday, May 16. You can preorder tickets NOW by clicking here and using the order code “mst3k”. Tickets go on sale publicly Monday, April 20.
Friday’s movie is “East Meets Watts” and Saturday’s movie is “Danger on Tiki Island.”
Those will also be the movies at the tour’s next stop in Mesa, Arizona, in the Piper Theater at the Mesa Arts Center May 22 and 23. Presale for Mesa begins Monday, April 20 (again, use order code “mst3k”); public sale Monday, April 27.
Show is May 22 & 23 at The Piper Theatre at Mesa Arts Center. The shows aren’t on the center’s Web site yet.
We have three more cities on the tour: Philadelphia (yay!!), Portland, Oregon and Dallas. Shows in those cities will have a different movie (to be announced) on the Friday show.
That’s all we have for now. Stay tuned.
Here’s the art they’ll be using in the first two cities:

Although some people are saying it is a re-named Dynamite Bros. :( I hope not.

Yeah I was afraid of that when I couldn't find anything on a search of East Meets Watts.
-
I hope they come back to St. Louis soon.
-
They just HAVE to play in Philly on the same weekend as Bonnaroo. They're really going to make me skip the greatest Bonnaroo line-up I've read in order to see them. Goddammit.
-
They should just play Bonnaroo, actually.
-
I am very much looking forward to their return to Dallas. As long as the tickets don't cost too much, that is.
-
Quoting from an email that CT sent out sometime in the past few days:
Please note that the movie formerly known as "The Dynamite Bros." will from here on out be referred to as "East Meets Watts" due to agreements with the film's distributor. In the same spirit, those of you who have heard us refer to "Brides of Blood Island", what we meant to say was "Danger on Tiki Island".
-
"East Meets Watts"...............Naomi? :P
BTW, I'll be going to the Saturday show in Philly!
-
Anyone else a little miffed at the ticket prices for these things? I mean, $40 for one show? We're talking $160 to go both nights for my wife and I . . . not to mention all those fees Ticketmaster is so fond of. I got bills to pay, dammit.
-
I could be... but I'm not. $40 is decent enough, I've seen acts that charge $70 or more. And yes, Ticketmaster's fees are just painful (which is why I prefer shows where I can buy directly from the venue). All that considered, though... I enjoy this too much to not do it, and I like knowing that I'm supporting the CT crew.
-
Well, have fun. I went last time they came to Dallas and paid $35 to sit in the aisle because I wasn't enough of an ass to cut someone off to a seat. I'm not paying $40 for a balcony seat this time.
-
What are 'your' costs on a typical night of entertainment? A night at the 'regular' movies for 2 could easily run you $40. A night at the bar with friends if you pick up the tab could be $100. And a day at a theme park for 2 might cost well over $200...
Yes ticket master fees might be outrageous and unjustified sometimes - but they're not going away any time soon. You can't always expect the 'artists' to make less just to give you a cheaper seat.
-
I'd say go if you have the chance. In this crap economy, who knows how long these guys can justify to keep touring?
-

Yeah, funny you say that . . . we don't do any of those things either - for the exact reason that it costs too much. We have 3 kids at home, my wife works part-time retail and I'm unemployed thanks to this wonderful economy of ours. So my expendable income is practically nothing. When we do go to the movies, it's the dollar theater with our own snacks sneaked in. We buy cheap beer and wine and drink at home (after the kids go to bed) if we feel the mood. We had season passes to Six Flags last year, but opted out this time around because of our predicament. Maybe you don't have the same responsibilities and expenses I do, but $40 a ticket is just out of the question for me now.

That's understandable. But in that case - what do you feel would be a fair price?
-
Well, I'd probably pay around $30 (fees and taxes included) for balcony seats. But starting at $40 before everything else for a small show like that seems a bit much for me.
-

The fact that you're making rational decisions to make the most of your income is awesome. I'm not trying to slight you for that at all. I'm not in the best of shape financially, so I'm doing the same thing (helped a bit by the fact that I'm single, and the only kids I have use a litter box). CT is one of the things I don't mind budgeting for, and it probably WILL mean I eat cheap lunches for... a good long time.
Also, I'm only going to one show, not both. Perhaps that could be an option? Half is better than none.
-
Oh, believe me, we'd only be going to one show, but even then that's somewhere around $100 for both of us after Ticketmaster and Uncle Sam get their pieces of the pie. Even that would be a serious strain on our budget right now. It's just my luck that they'd come back in town while I'm not working.
Maybe next time, right?
-
Maybe next time, right?
Huzzah!
-

I was more or less expecting $30 as well, but I guess right now with gas going up as well $40 makes sense though one would think there'd at least be a 2-day pass deal for at least $70. Either way, I'll be going down to the city to pick up tickets and avoid the $60 in fees spread over 4 tickets in favor of $5 roundtrip on public transportation and maybe another $6 on an unriffed movie.
-
I just went to the Saturday night Portland show (Danger on Tiki Island). I'm only partially employed and really couldn't afford the $50 ticket price, but then I figure this is a once in a few years (if lifetime) chance to see these guys in person, so I felt like I had to do it.
After being so thoroughly entertained, I felt it was worth it. But I may be paying for it in eating less the next couple of weeks.
-
It's still cheaper than the $85 I paid to see U2 in Indianapolis -- I recently paid $35 to watch the Washington Nats lose, so $40 isn't bad for something that's pretty much a guaranteed awesome time.
I may see them in Philly, schedule permitting...

it's a south jersey station that interviewed Joel. They're giving away tickets to the Friday night show. All you gotta do is email them. Can't hurt to try. I would but I've already got tickets for that night.
-
Too bad I live in Dallas. They were just here last night and the night before . . . and as I was bitching about, I couldn't afford to go, so I definitely couldn't afford to travel to Philadelphia.
Anyone in the Philly area, I wholeheartedly encourage you to try to get tickets, though. I saw them in Dallas last year when they were here to do The Wasp Woman and it was a lot of fun.

What's your "neck of the woods" if you don't mind saying? Nice avatar, btw.

Dallas . . . well, a suburb east of there. They were just here on the 5th and 6th. Thus my previous bitching about not being able to go and current jealousy.

Ordered today to two tickets for the 11/21 show in St. Louis. Ah, a CT show on Saturday and a Rams game on Sunday.
So, anyone in the STL area wanna go with?

Also on the same day as a Mizzou home game :(

Gasp, another Mizzou grad?
Living in Houston, I only get Mizzou updates at one sports bar and by hitting refresh on foxsports.

Not sure if I'm gonna be going to the one in Chicago or St Louis, yet. It all depends on when I decide to visit the fam...

Cinematic Titanic will do a five-night stand–Sunday, Oct. 25 through Thursday, Oct. 29–at Largo at the Coronet, 366 N. LaCienega Blvd. in Los Angeles. Shows will be at 7:30 p.m. each night (This will be another general admission show: Doors will open at 6.30.)
They will riff a different movie each night.
Sunday: LEGACY OF BLOOD (This is the first time they’ve done it live)
Monday: DANGER ON TIKI ISLAND (”…one of the worst movie monsters ever!)
Tuesday: SANTA CLAUS CONQUERS THE MARTIANS (”fully re-riffed”)
Wednesday: THE ALIEN FACTOR (”Aliens invade Baltimore, and they have no budget!”)
Thursday: EAST MEETS WATTS (“Kung-sploitation” classi…uh, movie.”)
They’re promising special guests, in addition to “the warm-up artistry of Dave (Gruber) Allen.”
Update: Special Guests slated to appear:
10/25-Dana Gould,
10/26-Patton Oswalt,
10/27-Andy Kindler,
10/28-Maria Bamford,
10/29-Chris Hardwick
Tickets are $35 and can be purchase by calling (310) 855-0350 (Visa/Mastercard only) or visiting the Largo box office Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 2-7 p.m.
I really wish I was in LA. Patton and Maria would be great to see alone (saw them both on Comedians of Comedy), but then to have them followed up by CT would be amazing.

See this thread has been dormant for awhile... But I just bought my tickets for the Detroit-area showing... It's on Friday, Feb 19th at the Royal Oak Music Theater for anybody in that area who might not have heard yet. After all the fees and taxes and whatnot, a single ticket for the double-feature showing ran $61.65. That's $50 face value on the double-feature ticket with the rest in taxes / fees. The single show ticket was $35 face.
I suppose for two movies, it's not an insane price. I'm certainly not made of money at the moment, as my wife is currently a full time student, but I had a little money in a slush fund that was heading for a new TV... guess this gives my last holdout CRT a temporary reprieve of it's sentence.
Of course, right after buying the tickets, I realized that I have still yet to purchase ANY Cinematic Titanic product. I saw one of them over a friends house... but my exposure has been very limited. I'm sure that I'll be in good comedic hands either way... but taking leap of faith... even if it's a somewhat tepid one.
-
Should be at the Royal Oak show myself...I haven't seen any Cinematic stuff either, but I remember saying to myself I'd love to see them if they came to town, and lo and behold, last week I found out about the show. Only going to the later show ($50 is still a little out of my price range), but I still think it's going to be a lot of fun. Also, a friend that missed the two Rifftrax Live shows is going to be able to see this one, which will be pretty nice.
-
Ok, went and back.
All right, before the show even started, I have to say, on the one hand, the seats were a little cramped. I've never been to the Royal Oak Theater, so I was a little surprised to find the seating wasn't permanent...just rows and rows of very small plastic folding chairs. Now, I'm not in good shape, but I'm not a big fat guy either, so I'm not just saying that because I should've bought two tickets for my ass or something. But when you have to keep your arms folded in at all times or else end up proposing to the two people on either side of you, maybe the spacing could've been a little more comfortable.
But when the show finally got started, it was just sort of...well, weird to see everybody live. Even with Rifftrax Live, I still wasn't in the same theater as Mike, Bill, and Kevin, but here, it just seemed cool to finally see them all live. And really, except for Joel and Josh, nobody looked like they had aged a day since MST3K. Granted, I haven't seen any of them SINCE the show left the air, but I think Frank could really get a gig as the new Dick Clark.
The show was great, too; I can honestly say that, while I didn't laugh as hard as I did at either Rifftrax show (the Rudolph short practically had me on the floor), I think I may have laughed more consistently. And I did notice that, even though I'm not sure which of the 5 wrote each joke, this is definitely the group that has the "obscure old-timey references" writers in it...something I really miss with Mike, Kevin, and Bill. Which just goes to show that while they're all talented writers, nothing will ever be quite like them all in a room, thinking about what a couple of puppets would say at the moment.
Not that I'm saying they need to; Rifftrax AND Cinematic Titanic are both excellent, and MST3K is just that; brilliance that didn't overstay its welcome. And having had a great time (and getting some nice autographs on my DVD set lobby cards), I'll probably end up picking up some of their their DVDs in the near future.
NOTE: A big highlight, though, were the tipsy hipsters who sat in front of us. They were NOT there to enjoy the show (as evidenced by the fact that they left about 25 minutes in), but apparently to show everybody, "OOOO, look at US! We're attending the COMEDY SHOW! Aren't we fan-TAS-tic?" After ordering enough Zima-esque beverages to choke a mongoose, the turtle-necked Bruce Campbell look-alike and his darling wife started taking pictures of everybody in the audience. My friend asked, "So, uh...you putting these up on Facebook or something?" To which Turtleneck asked, "What's Facebook?" Yes, that man was internally chortling, reminding us all of the fact that he is so hip that this whole INTERNET thing is above his notice (the guy was about 35, so he's clearly not old enough to not use computers). I don't think they left angrily, but more of the shame one feels upon accidentally vomiting 13 Zimas down a $300 angora turtleneck. I cannot prove that happened, but I think he may have been so hip that he would never let anyone SEE him throw up.
Compare this to the older gentlemen who sat next to me, and kindly showed me his Amazing Colossal Episode Guide and Fan Club Memorabilia he'd brought to get signed, and was overall just a pleasant person to talk to. You just never know who you'll meet.
-
I'll probably end up picking up some of their their DVDs in the near future.
While I love CT, and have enjoyed every release, I will say that you might be disappointed in their early DVDs if you haven't seen them yet. They've improved along the way but unless you really enjoy their style of comedy (like me) they'll be rather "meh".

I went to the Royal Oak show as well.
I've been patiently waiting for them to come to Michigan and last night my patience paid off. They did two shows and I attended both. The titans were very funny. I really hope, however, that if they ever come back to Michigan that they pick a different place. This was my first and very definitely last visit to the Royal Oak music theatre. I bought my ticket the first day they were available in order to get a front row seat. I arrive last night and excitedly make my way to my seat, only to set eyes on what looked like an over-crowded town meeting in a high school library. All of the seats in the first fifteen rows were plastic folding chairs. They had crammed more folding chairs into the first few rows in order to get people to pay more thinking they were getting 'premium sitting.' I walk over to my seat and find that I'm crammed between two John Candy look-a-likes. Through the entire first show I had to keep my arms folded close and my breath sucked in because there was literally no room to sit comfortably. For the second show I found a seat way in the back so I could actually take deep breaths.
In addition to that nonsense, my plan to get my MST episode guide signed also didn't go exactly as planned. My plan was to go to my car after the first show and then get it signed during the meet-n-greet between the two shows. I was told that if I left the theatre then I would not be able to re-enter until they were seating for the second show, which would be too late for the signing. Also, nobody in the theatre seemed to know exactly WHEN the second show was supposed to start. Our tickets all said 10pm but then several people said it didn't start till 11. I asked three of the people working there when the second show was supposed to start. Two of them told me 10 and the other told me 11. Turned out it was 11.
They also did their damndest to mess up Joel and company. Our riffers were happily riffing away and then about 30 minutes into the first film the screen suddenly goes black. At first I thought it was part of the show (maybe a skit or something like when they freeze the film on the DVDs). I could tell by the look on the riffers faces, however, that it wasn't. Like the pros they are, though, they recovered quickly and came up with some funny improv stuff during the five or so minutes it took for these Royal Oak dumbbells to get back to the right spot in the film, which they never really did. I think they got close, but it was obvious that we missed at least part of a scene, if not more. A couple of the performers were having trouble finding the right place in the script until Joel quietly said 'page 36 guys.' The only reason I heard him is because I was in the front row. Luckily, there were no more film mishaps all night.
Okay, I'm done whining now. Sorry, had to vent. Please, guys, if you ever come back to Michigan, go to Ann Arbor or even Detroit! You and the audience will be treated better.
-
I agree with Dangfish and SJP about the lackluster venue... I had never seen a show at the Royal Oak Music Theater... had been there a number of times in the 90s/early 00s when it was a dance club on weekend nights. Anyways, I sat in the balcony and the seats seemed to be vintage 1927 from when the joint was built. Each individual spring in the cushion made it's presence very well known to my ass. I suppose folding plastic chairs would have been worse... but I guess it wasn't a dealbreaker either way. The audio quality left something to be desired as well... some jokes I couldn't really make out.
As far as the show itself, the opening act... I forget his name already... was billed as a "Professional Warm-Up" and he did a decent job... never jaw droppingly funny, but got some deserved laughs. Some of the headliners also joined in the warm-up festivities... With J.Elvis, Joel and Frank all participating. Frank came out with a little stand-up bit, taking the obligatory shot at February's crop of trite and predicable romantic comedies... Then in what I can only assume was some brilliant stroke at ironic humor... he followed up that bit by performing a comedic musical number that was... well... trite and predictable.
The movies themselves were a mixed bag. The first showing, a Japanese flick called "Attack of the Insects" was the strong point of the evening... Even with the technical difficulties with the Christie Digital Projector system. If you could find that old floppy disc with "timespacecontinuumeditor.exe" on it... You could easily have squeezed this effort into MST3K Season 3 or 4 and it would probably be considered an upper-tier episode. There were all the benchmarks for a great episode: copious amounts of overacting, characters that leant themselves to great recurring jokes, downright goofy ass scenes that drew audience laughter when no riffs were being dropped... It just worked very well.
The second film I thought dropped off noticably. It was a Samson movie... and much like many of the Hercules / Samson movies featured on the show... there were noticable dull stretches where the movie just didn't provide much for the performers to work with. I'll admit that I've never been a huge fan of the Hercules efforts from MST3K and I suppose audience fatigue could have been a factor as I was reaching into my 4th hour in the venue.. But there were stretches, even with jokes being dropped, that garned little more than some polite chuckles from the audience... and I don't recall that ever happening in the first showing. That's not to say it was a poor effort, there were laughs to be had, but the movie and the accompanying jokes clearly had less energy than it's predecessor. If "Attack of the Insects" was grade A, then I'd think the Samson movie was a B- or C+.
I didn't bring anything to sign or stand in line for autographs... but it was great that this was included with admission. I was sort of surprised that they weren't hawking any product. I was actually looking forward to buying a release or two on DVD at the show... but unless I missed it... there was no merchandising presence at all. In general, I would say it was a good time and money well spent... although I really don't think they brought a top-tier product to the second showing. I had heard great things about "East vs West" and was disappointed that wasn't one of the featured films.
-
They did have merch, but it sold out pretty fast. Always like to see Gruber...loved him in Freaks & Geeks!
-
Hmm.. where was it located? I obviously must have missed it... as we were one of the first folks in the door.
And yes... GRUBER... Dunno why I couldn't remember that seeing it's been barely 24 hours. He was pretty good... but I wish they could have varied the bits up a bit more between the two shows...
-
Yeah, I was wondering about the merchandise too. The guy sitting next to me in the first show had purchased two DVDs. I talked later to the guy selling the stuff and he said he sold out of everything before the first show even started.
And I agree with Nunyerbiz about the first show being better than the second, although I think I enjoyed the second one a little more than he did. In the Samson film there were definitely some periods without much laughter. In particular there was a 20 minute stretch in the middle with barely a chuckle to be found in the theatre. It was just a lot of horse riding and marching and not much for them to work with. However, there were a few scenes in the film that inspired some of their finest riffing of the night. I found myself laughing harder at these scenes than anything in the first film. The first movie ,however, (War of the Insects? ) was more consistent with solid riffing throughout. Overall it gave them a bit more to work with. And I know I already did my whining in the previous post, but Nunyerbiz reminded me that I neglected to mention the crappy audio quality. There were quite a few jokes that I wasn't able to make out. You'd think that a venue that bills itself as a 'MUSIC THEATRE" would maybe have a halfway decent sound system?
-
We got a guest appearance from Patton Oswalt at the latter of the two shows!!!
What a truly awesome experience it was in Milwaukee last night, both shows were sell-outs!
- before Genocide, Joel reminiscing w/ the audience on various things about his experience growing up in Wisconsin such as...Samson, Ward Allen & Albert, Fort Atkinson, etcetera...just pure bliss.
- Patton Oswalt!!! He was performing over at the Pabst, and came over to the Turner after his gig. He did some stand-up for 10 minutes, and absolutely killed the audience w/ his story about seeing Jerry Maguire w/ his brother on Christmas Eve '96. It was so fun.
- it was Joel's birthday! We sang "Happy Birhtday" to him after the first show
- Frank's STILL doing his "Convoluted Man" bit! :D
- The first film, Genocide War of the Insects, was insane, and it did practically riff itself (looking SO forward to the DVD release of it). The Samson flick, by itself it's weak, but the riffing was amazing, and the Titans seemed to be having such a great time onstage. Joel's "White Christmas" riff in the latter was tear-inducing! And Samson sucking in his gut while dead was great...LENS CAP!
- the light-hearted heckling of Joel prior to the first flick; Joel sharing how Milwaukee was always the big city while growing up in Fort Atkinson, and someone from the audience shouting out, "It still is!". That was hilarious, and the Manos quip from the audience prior to Genocide was neat, too.
- I had no idea Gruber was in Crossroads
- and lastly, plenty of Spotted Cows were had!
RAD, if by chance you've read this, give my warmest thanks to Mary Jo & the gang. It was special. :)
-
- I had no idea Gruber was in Crossroads
Mike actually points that out in the riff, kind of. He says something like 'the Naked Trucker seems to be enjoying it" during the karaoke scene. He's only there for a quick second though.
-

Yea... that seems to be the calling card for just about every "greased up 1950s bobybuilder playing a poorly dubbed mythical figure" movie that has ever been attempted in MST3K and it's various offspring... Brilliant two minute flourishes of comedic gold nuggets followed by 20 minute stretches of panning in the river and coming up with nothing.
I suppose I may have been a tad harsh with my thoughts on the second show, and I agree there was some really funny jokes to be had.., But while I think you can get away with inconsistent source movies a little easier when looking at a 20+ episode television season... or even sprinkling one into a handful of DVD releases... You really, really need to bring your top stuff when putting on a live event in front of 1,000 people or whatever... and I just didn't think that Samson movie was up to muster. If it was a MST3K episode that I had come across 12-15 years ago during my tape trading days, it would have fallen into the "no hurry to revisit" pile.
-
I don't know...maybe my opinion would've been different if I had seen the first show, but I've always had a soft spot for the Hercules-esque films, and this one was especially ridiculous in that nobody in China has any problems that their savior wears naught but a diaper for the entirety of the film, and then leaves like Poochy ("I have to go now! My planet needs me!").
But, I just wanted to mention one of the more memorable lines of the movie...
*Samson throws down stuffed tiger he'd been wrestling with* That one was for Roy Horn! Tell your friends!
I also liked Josh's "Zaxxon" line, and I like that he noticed the three people who chuckled at it.
Sucks that Patton showed up for the Minneapolis show and nowhere else. Would've loved to see him live.

Anybody else going to the Times Square show in April?

So, uh, anybody going to Danger On Tiki Island in NYC this Saturday? I'll be there, but don't let that scare ya. I'm quite cuddly.

Seconded. Man, I wish they had recorded it last night. I can't imagine they could be more "on" or have a more receptive crowd.
Where were you sitting, CrowTee? We had sweet seats toward the back of the orchestra pit. (Thank you Ms Sharktopus, for the best berfday present ever.)
-
I was six rows back beside a metal column. Very close but I couldn't see the lower right part of the screen since Frank isn't transparent. To think what cinematic glory I might have missed in that spot. Or not.

Cinematic Titanic: "War of the Insects"
with Joel Hodgson, Trace Beaulieu, J. Elvis Weinstein, Frank Conniff, and Mary Jo Pehl from Mystery Science Theater 3000
Cinematic Titanic returns to the glorious Castro Theatre to provide hilarious riffing to 1968's War of the Insects, a feature-length Japanese B-movie, never before performed live in the Bay Area. One night only!
About "War of the Insects": In this dreadful atomic age sci-fi "thriller" from Japan, a deranged scientist hell bent on taking over the world genetically engineers deadly killer bees to do his bidding. But is his plan worse than the movie's dubbing? Seldom seen since 1968, and it's apparent why.

i gotta go to that SF show. i love the castro!
-
just got my tickets for SF just want to say the incentive of saving 10 bucks buying two tickets on preorder is heavily dampened by the 8.50 service fee.
either way looking forward. anyone going?
-
Just saw the SF show last night, and was thoroughly impressed - also surprised that the CT guys seem more willing to break the PG-13 language barrier that the RiffTrax crew seems to impose on themselves. Hearing Joel swear was kinda like catching your grandparents having sex, but much, much funnier, and much less likely to lead to expensive years of therapy in the future.
Thanks for bringing the live comedy to us, Cole!

I was hoping for another DVD release before November but maybe by X-mas.. :-\

Today the Washington Post ran an article basically saying, "Hey guys, there's this great thing called Cinematic Titanic and it's coming to D.C. TONIGHT!" The comments section is full of people (including yours truly) responding with "Well GEE, thanks for giving us plenty of notice."

BOGO sale on the tickets for the RI show today I think.

They had a show in Royal Oak in February? Dammit! A buddy of mine was wondering when they were coming to town again. Never even knew they were in the area. Well, crap, have to wait until next time.

Well, looks like I've got about 8 months to take the day/night off of work to make the Schenectady show. It's about the same distance away as Buffalo is, and that only takes about 2-2.5 hours. Much better than when I had to take a train to Cleveland to see them...
-
As far as I know, Janelle and I plan to go to the Elgin show in Aug. I need to remind her about that.

RVR? They've been in my *time zone* twice. The closet show to Denver was 875 miles away. Please don't gripe about a minor inconvenience.
Hell, I'll make a two and a half hour drive to buy fireworks, let alone see the CT folks.
-
If they ever come to Texas (Austin, San Antonio and Dallas are all 4-5 hours away and I live in Houston), you all are welcome to stay at my house then we car pool it over. I will make sure the lock is on the beer and wine fridges of course.

Well that's your choice. I, on the other hand won't because it's more than a minor inconvinence to me.
One of the main reasons I stopped going to the RiffTrax Live shows was because of the closest theater was 30 minutes away in Charlotte, NC and I have to battle Charlotte traffic both ways (not to mention the technical glitches).. That's more than an inconvience to me; that's a major hassle.
-
Still annoyed that they've never come anywhere close to Denver. It's a big city and it seems like they avoid the region like the plague. They just keep going to the same regions over and over again.

Because more than likely the same promoters and theater keep bringing them back. Generally speaking most performers don't decide where to go. If you want them in your area it is time to bug local theaters and/or promoters to bring them to you.

Yeah, they've hit this *time zone* twice. The closest they've gotten to here is 800 miles away. Not counting 1992. Or Mary Jo popping by.

Still not coming back to Minnesota, that one show they did here must have a loser money wise (which is a real shame considering)

I think I'm completely done caring about them at all. They are coming to a theater really close to me, in a town an hour north of Chicago. Tickets $45!! And they are doing movies that have been out on DVD forever (Frankenstein and Blood of the Vampires). I've already seen Vampires TWICE because of their "we'll surprise you with the movie after you buy the ticket" crap they pulled a while back. I'm just so sick of their seeming lack of care for their consumers.

That Much ???
I feel the same way about their seeming lack of care for their consumers with regards to their lack of DVD releases and I sure don't want to drive out of my way for a repeat showing of something I already own! >:(

Sorry, I was wrong. They are $48 with the "internet fee". I'm sure if I went through with it they would tack on a few more crazy charges like 'print at home convenience charge" and "you should buy printer ink to print these and since we reminded you, give us a few more dollars".

That's how much the ticket cost for the show I went to. Plus there was the train tickets, which I believe cost about $100 (Syracuse to Cleveland). I still say it was worth it, though they were showing a not yet released movie, East Meets Watts, or as it was known back then, Dynamite Brothers.

"we'll surprise you with the movie after you buy the ticket"
My number 1 complaint. Followed by lack of studio dvds. One of the recent shows they didn't announce the movie until 1 week prior and by that time all the decent seats were sold out. I really can't afford to see shows twice and I didn't want to get burned by a double.

Well whatever the major complaints may be, I'm still going to the Royal Oak double feature tonight, with Astral Factor and The Doomsday Machine. Not sure if they're 'new' films or not, but they're definitely different from the live show I saw last time. There IS rampant stupidity with the ticket purchasing websites, though...they wanted $6 for 'ticket insurance.' I believe that's an option for the sort of people who never buy a new car without undercoating seal protectorate and go for the TV offer of two whole Shamwows for only $19.99.
Not that that's CT's fault, but really, how hard up are these venues for money when they have to result to that sort of snake oil?

Going to Durham March 16, can't wait!
It's the closest they've come to my locale, 170 miles. But I'm just gonna rent me a new car with navigation and go for it.
Show is audience choice and the only newer one they're playing is Insects, was really hoping for Astral or Rattlers. But I'm not complaining.

They canceled the Schenectady show with no explanation in Feb. Got my money back, but 3 very disappointed MST3K fans.
