Title: Funniest Moment on Television
Post by: kodiakthejuggler on December 14, 2006, 06:48:49 PM
I'm not sure if this ever aired, but...

the funniest thing I ever saw on Television was on the Carol Burnett Show. They were doing a Mama's Family sketch. I believe it was Vicki Lawrence as Mama Thelma, Carol Burnett as Eunice, Dick Van Dyke, and the one and only Tim Conway. They were all sitting down on the couch, playing a card game of some sort. Tim decides to go off on a tangent, describing a pair of circus elephants that were joined at the trunk. He goes on and on, in character, making the rest of the cast strain not to laugh(aside from Vicki - she was steely-faced the whole time). They try to continue the scene but Tim keeps going off about these Siamese Elephants, clearly having fun with it. Carol has to drop her head several times to hide her laughter, but Vicki keeps her face stone cold. Hearing Tim describe this scene is hilarious. Seeing the cast buckle under the pressure of not laughing is even more hilarious. But the funniest moment is yet to come. Carol decides enough is enough, and says "Go on, Mama." to continue the game/scene. But Vicki, clearly angry with Tim for wasting so much time with his little joke, says without missing a beat: "Are you sure that little ass-hole's through?"

Tim immediately drops face first to the floor, shaking with laughter, while Dick slowly drops to the floor as well, Carol doubles over, and the crowd goes NUTS!!!!  Who knows how long it took for the cast to regain their composure to continue filming the scene!!

The funniest scene in the history of television, ladies and gentlemen.

p.s. If anyone can find the video of this on the web, or has it to upload, please do so!!!!!!

It's this exchange between The Cat and Dave Lister in Red Dwarf:

2 Int. Sleeping quarters.

CAT and LISTER are lying on bunks in a darkened room, watching television.

LISTER:
Cat?

CAT:
Mmm?

LISTER:
Ya ever see the Flintstones?

CAT:
Sure!

LISTER:
D'ya think Wilma's sexy?

CAT:
Wilma Flintstone?

LISTER:
Maybe we've been alone in deep space too long, but every time I see that sharmi body, it drives me crazy.  Is it me?

CAT:
Well, I think in all probability, Wilma Flintstone is the most desirable woman that ever lived.

LISTER:
That's good.  I thought I was goin' strange.

CAT:
She's incredible!

LISTER:
What d'ya think of Betty?

CAT:
Betty Rubble?  (Pause) Well, I would go with Betty... but I'd be thinking of Wilma.

LISTER:
This is crazy.  Why are we talking about going to bed with Wilma Flintstone?

CAT:
You're right.  We're nuts.  This is an insane conversation.

LISTER:
She'll never leave Fred, and we know it.

I'm like Kodiak in that the funniest thing I've ever seen on TV involved the Carol Burnett Show.

It was their entire parody sketch of Gone With the Wind (titled "It Went With The Wind", as I recall). The entire sketch was hysterical, but the moment that Carol makes her entrance dressed in the dark green dress made from curtains (with the rod still running through the shoulder part) made me crack several ribs at once.

I'm a big fan of toilet humor, and nothing cracks me up like a good fart joke! This clip from Family Guy almost caused me to suffocate!!

Everything already mentioned is great.  Let me add:

From Taxi,  Reverend Jim taking his cabbie written test and asking Bobby for help on a question. Bobby tells him the answer, "Slow down." which causes Jim to ask the question much slower. Funny the first time but by the third time Jim is dragging out the question and the audience is losing it.

Another Conway/Korman bit from The Carol Burnett Show: Harvey's the patient and Tim's the dentist who keeps stabbing himself with the novacaine needle.  Watching Harvey trying to keep it together makes those bits classics.

From the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson, I'll skip over the Ed Ames tomahawk bit and go to George Gobel in the chair with Bob Hope and Dean Martin on the couch.  Martin leaning in to brush his cigarette ash off in a distracted Gobel's mug has the crowd laughing but Gobel's line is the topper. As close as I can remember the line, Gobel says, "You ever have the dream where the world is a tuxedo and you're a pair of brown shoes?"

Much more recently, let me throw in two moments from the Buffy episode "Hush" where everyone has lost their voices.  When Giles is giving his overhead projection talk to the "Scooby gang" and Buffy responds to Willow's questions about killing them with a staking motion that Xander misinterprets and the scene where Xander thinks Spike has bitten Anya and starts to beat on Spike.  When Anya lets him know she's alright and tells him with hand signals that they should leave and have sex, Giles' reaction is great. I laughed out loud at both moments and rarely see a Joss Whedon-written show that doesn't combine humor with horror and action.

I watched the YouTube clip with no sound and still couldn't help but laugh at it, and probably for probably the 100th time or more. Notice Wendell's expression (the pale kid who always throws up) when the amulance hits the tree. Priceless. According to the audio commentary, they were going to have the stretcher land on Homer's head just like the skateboard did, but thought that might be "too much." TOO MUCH?! Eh, they might be right. That much hilarity might've killed me.

Favorite Simpsons moment: From the episode where Bart sells his soul to Milhouse, the opening where Bart has changed the hymnal music and the organist plays the long version of "In a Gadda da Vida" while the congregation rocks along with the slightly altered lyrics and Reverend Lovejoy realizes that this is "rock and/or roll"!

It has to be from Mr Show, The Fast Show or A Bit of Fry and Laurie. Which skit would be impossible to say.

The Chris Farley skit was hilarious...... I would also add his Chipendale's (the cartoon chipmunks?) dancing with Patrick Swazye..... that was a classic too.

John Candy in Splash playing racketball and drinking and smoking was hilarious.

The whole scene in the auditorum from the "Hush" Buffy episode was a riot.

I was thinking the Chippendales one also.
I also thought of that 70's game show clip from the Newlywed Game I think where the host asks where the most unusual place they have ever made love is and the wife says "The butt?" Cheesey but alsways makes me laugh.

I can't substantiate this myself, but a friend tells me that on Johnny Casrson's Tonight Show, the writers determined that the two biggest guaranteed laughs came from Johnny saying "McNuggets," and calling Joan Rivers a bitch. So they wrote a joke about Joan Rivers signing a deal with McDonald's to promote their newest menu item - Bitch McNuggets. Apparently it got the longest laugh in the show's history.

I think there was a poll over here in the U.K. to find the best T.V. moment ever. Not necessarily the funniest, just the best. I think the moon landing came in second and the first was Delboy in 'Only Fools & Horses' falling through the bar (http://youtube.com/watch?v=KLYvSWJUBb8).

Says a lot about we Brits, really  ;D

You know, I'm a huge Britcom fan and I tried Only Fools and Horses. I really did. It just...wasn't funny. Maybe it's TOO British?  I mean, I like a fair variety of Brit shows, but that one just didn't make me laugh. Of course, I loathe "Are You Being Served?" and I think "Father Ted" is rather vacuous as well. So maybe it's just that it wasn't my style or something.

I've never been a big Only Fools... fan but given that (a) my family are cockney and (b) my Dad basically is Delboy I've seen a lot of it over the years. I think it's just been around so long that a lot of people have a great deal of emotional investment in the characters (and why the episode where they finally made it big was so well-received).

I've never been a fan of either of the other two (though I do like the Father Ted sketch where the priests get lost in the lingerie dept.).

Um, that was that supposed to be funny? Maybe you have to know tha characters, but I can't imagine that even being memorable.

I never liked the Honeymooners. Art Carney was pretty funny, but I can't stand sitcoms that basically boil down to a married couple constantly fighting.

My latest "finds" among Britcoms have been Black Books and Look Around You (the latter of which still isn't on DVD here, but I got off the net). Hilarious.

Black Books. Genius.

"Well, to be honest, after years of smoking and drinking, you do sometimes look at yourself and think... You know, just sometimes, in between the first cigarette with coffee in the morning to that four hundredth glass of cornershop piss at 3am, you do sometimes look at yourself and think, 'This is fantastic. I'm in heaven.'"

I was just about to quote this one!  WKRP is one of the most underated sitcoms in history.

My favorite line from "Friends" was

Monica "The camera adds 10 pounds"
Chandler "How many cameras were on you?"

And of course the classic...

"A little song, a little dance,  a little seltzer in your pants"
RIP Chuckles

- Rainier Wolfcastle, last line of the film festival epsiode of The Simpsons

I have never laughed harder in my life.  I was on the treadmill at the time, and I had to stop running because I couldn't breathe.  The set-up for the joke is absolutely brilliant.  I'm sure that most of the people on this board know what I'm talking about.

It's not the funniest thing ever, but I must mention Futurama's "War Is The H-Word" where Henry Kissinger's head in a jar says "We have all seen too many body bags and ball sacks." That, and the entire "Spanish Fry" episode. "I didn't think I'd escape with my doodle, but I pulled it out." "Just like at the movie theater! WOOO!" I love dirty jokes in smart cartoons.

Benny Hill, on the other hand, just not funny. But Benny Hill's funeral on Robot Chicken was hilarious. I wish I could find it on YouTube.

Benny Hill has had an unmistakable influence on many a comedian. Martin Short is one example. As both himself, and as Jiminy Glick, he likes to copy Benny's schtick: to read a line that might not mean anything dirty, but with his slight pause and mischievous smile, makes it sound dirty...

Also, when Benny Hill did that silly skit involving a movie with crappy editing, well, that right there almost seemed like a MST3K movie for real.

Yes to both of those!! Also Conway as the little old man rolling down the stairs in slow motion.

There were a lot of great moments on "I Love Lucy," but I have a particular soft spot for a lesser-known episode where Ethel is singing at a concert while Lucy, Ricky, and Fred, upset at her conceited attitude, sneak onstage and make fun of her behind her back. The pranks get more and more elaborate and I lose it every time!

To be fair, that's one of my least favorite bits of Darkplace. There's just so much more going on in an average episode, especially on re-viewing them. Like the funeral scene in Ep. 1 where they take entirely too long for Dagless to walk from the forest down to the graveside - it's just awkward and wrong but not flagged in any particular way. That's the kind of stuff I like.
