Title: So.. How about They Might Be Giants?
Post by: Pak-Man on December 14, 2006, 12:03:05 PM
So far, based on what I've seen in these posts, everyone else's favorite bands could beat my favorite bands up, but I gotta imagine there are a few TMBG fans out there. :^) I just recently discovered them... Well I discovered them when they had a couple songs on Tiny Toons back in the day, but I just recently decided to embrace that discovery and get an album or 5. I love everything I hear, so far. Some of it's hit and miss, but they have a neat kinda smart quality to 'em that I like.

Anyone else?

Well, I think I can speak for all of us here when I say that everybody wants a rock to wind a string around.

Everyone dies frustrated and alone, and that is beautiful.

"Son, I am able," she said.  "Though you scare me."
"Watch," said I.
"Beloved," I said.  "Watch me scare you, though."
Said she, "Able am I, son."

You know, I've always wondered if I Am A Grocery Bag is sort of a prequel to Dead.  Like, we finally find out the contents of the bag of groceries accidentally taken off the shelf before the expiration date.

x2.  not a huge fanatic, but i saw them live back in the day.  GREAT live show for a duo!  one of the best uses of semi-prerecorded material (IE drum machine, etc) that i've ever heard live.

You saw them when they were still just a duo?  Dude!  They have a whole backup band now.  I've seen them live three times now, I guess.  They're definitely worth going to see.  I saw them last summer and bought a signed copy of Venue Songs and got a free copy of the limited only-being-sold-at-concerts edition of a re-release of the (She Was A) Hotel Detective EP on audiocassette.  And after the show, I got Flans to sign it.  It was Flans' birthday that night.  At one point during the concert, Linnell led the band in a very They Might Be Giants rendition of "Happy Birthday To You", and evidently he hadn't told Flans about it, because he was kinda looking around at his bandmates, confused, as though thinking: "Oh my god.  It's finally happened.  Linnell has finally lost it, right here on the stage."  Then he saw the cake the roadies brought out and caught on to what was happening.  It was a neat moment.

That's an awesome story. Now back to quoting random TMBG lyrics.

Why was the bench still warm? Who had been there?

I love them and see them live whenever possible. My wife was in a choir down at Lincoln Center and actually got to sing with them in concert. Of course I was busy and had to miss it.

Anyway, so as not to disrupt the order of things:

I could never sleep my way to the top, cuz my alarm clock always wakes me right up!

A woman came up to me and said I'd like to change your mind,
With wrong ideas that appeal to you, though I am not unkind,
She looked at me, I looked at something written across her scalp,
And these are the words it said to me as I faintly cried for help.

There's only one thing that I know how to do well
And I've often been told that you only can do what you know how to do well
And that's be you!
Be what you're like!
Be Like yourself!
And so I'm having a wonderful time but I'd rather be whistling in the dark!

Harold Atari's inner voice: They might be monitoring it!
Joel: They Might Be Giants!
Tom: Huh?

TMBG is one of my absolute favorites, too. I saw them in Tucson on the Venue Songs tour. I will never forget that show; they really made it special. I'd always wanted a recording of a concert I had attended, and they made recordings of every show on that tour and had them available from the website. Not only did they do that, but they also wrote a song just for us! It's called City Limits and it's sweet. As part of their encore, Flans brought out a radio that was wired to the sound system. Once he found a station he and the band quickly picked up the tune and played along with it! Then he changed stations and they played along to that song! And thusly they repeated several times in quick succession. That was a whole lot of fun.

Some crazy bastard wants to hit me!

OH, Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlight night

Every gal in Constantinople
Lives in Istanbul not Constantinople
So if you have a date in Constantinople

Was once New Amsterdam
Why they changed it, I can't say
People just liked it better that way!

My older brother introduced me to them in the early 90's. I attribute that to my actually likeing music other than oldies (which is all I listened to back then).

I've seen them live twice so far, and both times they have been phenomenal. I even got to meet Flansburgh after the show once, which was mind bogglingly cool.

Now it's time to split this forum into factions: who do you think is the better songwriter of the two: Linnell or Flansburg?  I have to say that if I'm thinking of a TMBG song, it's usually one by Linnell.  His songs tend to have more hummable melodies than Flans.  Although Flans can really rock the houselike nobody's business.  Plus, he is a motherf*cker guitarist.  Or maybe it's their manager.

I think of them so much as a unit that I don't really feel that separation in their songwriting styles. I know it exists, but it doesn't impress itself upon me.

I've been a fan of theirs since the early '90s with Flood. In fact, even though some of their later stuff has been okay, I still think Flood is the overall best album that they did. I was first introduced to them, strangely enough, by a couple music videos that Tiny Toons did of "Particle Man" and "Istanbul, Not Constantinople". If you've never seen them:

Animaniacs was overall better than Tiny Toons, in my opinion. Unfortunately, they never did any music videos like these. The Wakkorotti bits were hilarious, though.

Now they've overcome their shyness, now they're calling me Your Highness and the world screams

Can't wait for this Friday. I get to see Giants at Mr. Smalls in Pittsburgh. I also might get to see them in Minneapolis on the 3rd as well.

I recently finished off my collection with Mink Car. I actually really like it. The popular opinion seems to be that this is the worst album they've ever done, but almost every track is a winner for me. Maybe it's because I wasn't quite a fan yet when TMBG added to their band or whatever they did that changed their sound, so I don't see this as the shark-jumping moment that some of the more long-time fans do, but I like nearly every song. I love their cover of Yeh Yeh, and "Man It's So Loud in Here" might be on my top 10 TMBG song list. The whole album seems a bit more upbeat and energetic than the others (Despite the inclusion of songs like, "Hopless Bleak Despair" and "My Man")

Now that I have all the (Non kiddie) TMBG albums (I intend to collect the kid albums next) I'd rank them (Best to Least-Best)

Flood
Lincoln
Mink Car
They Might Be Giants
Apollo 18
Long Tall Weekend
The Spine
John Henry
The Else
Factory Showroom

People don't like Mink Car?  I don't know why.  It's a solid album.  It's the last tmbg album so far that I've liked every track of.

I liked those Ape Cycle songs they did.  I wonder what inspired those.  Ape Cycle Planet of the Apes was perfect for my menu when Matthew Elliot riffed it.

Time to dust this thread off because there's a new album next week!

AND if you want, you can stream it right now and totally free right here:

http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/they-might-be-giants-pack-mini-jams-into-nanobots-album-premiere-20130226

I'm torn. I want to hear it, but I want my first time hearing it to be over-and-over-again in my car. Hmmm..

EDIT: Or at least it WILL stream once they iron out some technical difficulties, it seems...

Stream's working now. For me, at least.

They are coming to Australia, I think it might be my first night out since our baby arrived!

Well, none of the songs jumped out and grabbed me like a bunch of the songs on "Join Us" but I think I like Nanobots. There's a cohesiveness to it. The songs all belong together. Maybe it's because I listened to it on the car drive home while the sun went down, but it feels very mellow. I'll have to give it a few more rotations before I know which songs I liked best, but Replicant and 9 Secret Steps are early contenders.

New pay-what-you-want album from They Might Be Giants!

https://tmbgifc.com/phonepower.php

Their last couple of albums have been great, so I'm looking forward to listening to this after work.

Having more trouble than usual falling in love with Phone Power. Too mellow, I think. Some of the more understated TMBG albums take a while to worm their way into my heart, so I'll give it a few more listens before giving up on it.

I had my first listen to the first half of it yesterday. Seems OK, but not as great as their last couple.

Had at least one stand out, but I didn't check what its name was :P Will make a point of looking on the next listen.

After listening to "I Like Fun," I think TMBG needs a hug. They've always had a dark undercurrent, but it bubbles a lot closer to the surface than usual. Still lyrically/musically brilliant, of course. I'm gonna need some time to get to know this one.

I think I Like Fun is the best album since Join Us. It's a great mix of different types of songs, all done to the best of their ability. I think this album would make a great introduction to the band. I also love the fact that, since Join Us, TMBG has become a band that benefits from a good pair of headphones. They have been experimenting with some really interesting sounds and instruments.

I've been able to figure out the meaning of every song except McCafferty's Bib. No idea what that refers to.

But yes, HEAVY emphasis on death throughout, but it's all upbeat. Naming it "I Like Fun" considering this is classic TMBG humor. This tonal disconnect between lyrics and music is very much a core aspect of their music, though. I had to explain to my wife the other night that "Twisting" is not about doing the twist.

I should check that out then. That description reminds me of the Scissor Sisters "I Can't Decide" that I love so much.

Yes, check out TMBG. You'll suddenly get a lot more QuipTracks jokes.

Whenever I don't get a Quiptracks joke, I just assume it's either a They Might Be Giants or a Star Fox reference.

I recommend Flood as a jumping-on point. It's a pretty good indicator of what one can expect from TMBG. (And like- 70% of TMBG references come from those songs.)

Psh. If the riffers are posers, yeah.

But seriously, Flood is very good. I listened to it over and over as a child and I would be a completely different person today had I not. However, their recent work is their best work and it's a shame people only care about Flood. I'm sure They feel the same. Flood also doesn't show off how adept they have become with their mixing and use of sound. Most of Flood is synthesizers and a drum machine. You won't find anything that sounds as good as the horns in Lady and the Tiger or McCaffertey's Bib.

Oh, for sure. Every album is worth a listen, and their new stuff is awesome. (Join Us is a personal favorite.) but Flood is a great gateway drug. If "Birdhouse in Your Soul" can't turn you on to TMBG, it just might not be the right band for you.

I think the main thing you need to be enthusiastic about to enjoy TMBG is hearing something that's different from everything else. TMBG exists in its own universe completely untouched by trends. Their "sound" is defined by their desire to find new directions music can go. Flood is still extremely popular because it's timeless. If the first song didn't explicitly say it was made in 1990, I don't think you could tell when it's from. But maybe I'm just too close to it to be objective.

Or maybe I'm just way too pretentious. That could be it.

I went to the show in Boulder last night. It was pretty amazing. They have a trumpeteer this tour, which cranks up the awesomeness pretty high. The show was actually streamed live, so it's available to watch.

HERE IT IS (https://youtu.be/Ez3t5XRmlq0)

If somebody could embed that video, that would be great.

I usually like their stuff but I thought this was a pretty weak album.  All the songs just kind of blended together.  They all just slipped off my brain like Teflon.  They were just that forgettable.  I listened to the whole thing twice and don't remember anything.

Their Dial-A-Song line is back.  I missed it during the original run, and then again when it went up in 2015, but it's back now.  The number is 1-844-387-6962.

The audio quality is obviously not great, since it's over the phone, but it's still a novel thing.

For decades, I thought it was $19.90.
