Title: Firefly MMORPG
Post by: Pak-Man on December 11, 2006, 08:51:13 PM
Wasn't sure whether to put this in general or links or here, but since it's strongly tied to a TV show, and since it's been noted that a lot of fans of that TV show lurk around here, I thought I'd spread the news that Firefly is getting its own MMORPG.

Here's the skinny:

You can all rejoice now. :^)

I'm of the opinion that MMORPG's are life-vampires.  Sucking away at your free-time until you're a hollowed out husk of a man.  I had a free trial of City of Heroes that I played to death and almost bought when my 2 weeks were up.  Then I realised that apart from work, I hadn't actually been out of the house the whole time.

A Firefly one sounds awesome though!  ;D

This sounds like an online role-playing game I might actually get involved in!!

Not that I don't waste enough time on my computer anyway!

I spent a whole summer doing pretty much nothing but "World of Warcraft", so I'll really struggle to get into another MMORPG. I'm a bit like a former junkie who will never touch the stuff again. Yahoo Pool is my strongest drug now :)

I think that could really work. Whedon built a solid and beleivable universe that has tons of potential for great adventure. Alas, an MMORPG has many other factors to get right, so I won't be holding my breath for this until some of the design ideas and play concepts actually start taking shape.

Right now, I'm stuck in City of Villains, which I find to have the perfect mix of playability and depth for me. It scales very well from casual to hardcore players and the playfulness of the setting and concept makes sure that it's hard for morons to ruin world immersion.

For me, the incredible customizability of the characters is a main selling point, and I occasionally try out new characters for a day or so before returning to my three main ones. The only problem (on the EU servers, at least) is that NCSoft's marketing department seems to spend little to no time marketing the game, so the game is underpopulated excet during European evening hours and weekends, and I often play at odd times.

But I'd check out a Firefly MMORPG before most other Sci-Fi ones (although I have some hope that the Star Trek one might turn out to be pretty good).

As much as I liked the show, I doubt the Firefly MMORPG will do well. Very few episodes means relatively little established canon to build a universe on, and this will lead to a lot of controversy concerning all the things the developers add into the game that was never in the show. Also, the show told a story, and that story was about the characters and their interaction. You won't get that in an MMORPG, you'll only get the premise, because nobody will have a script to follow and very few are good enough role-players to actually produce a story of their own. Especially not when quests, loot gathering, character training, etc takes up their time so that they can actually feel powerful.  Additionally, while a lot of fans of Firefly exist, there are still many more people that haven't seen it and don't "get it" due to the poor exposure and marketing by Fox, so there's not as many fans out there, that would ALSO play the mmorpg, as you'd all like to think.

I'd much rather seen an MMORPG based on the Elder Scrolls series by Bethesda, than yet another TV/Movie game made to capitalize on the brand, because such games almost always do badly, since they're limited to the original material's canon for the most part, instead of being truly free to add whatever they want.

It will fail. That is a sad, but very probably true prediction.
