Title: This is it, the official Top 25 Most Wanted Riffs
Post by: bratpop on November 29, 2008, 02:54:07 PM
Okay, I can't keep this to myself. I tallied all the lists. I have no idea how to list them from most to least in Open Office, so I just went through and copied anything with more than 8 mentions. (It counted them for me, I just can't get the numbers in order automatically.)

This is just for knowing. It's not a poll. I'm probably not going to update it. Don't say, "I support Miss Congeniality, add my vote" and try to increase the numbers. That's not the point. The point is, without bias, this is what people chose individually as their most wanted riffs. These are the ones that the most people wanted. After this is published of course, any further data is skewed by knowing what the top 10 is. Anything at the top is likely to stay at the top anyway. Only the top few have overwhelming numbers.

What I counted: I counted lists, that's it. I didn't try and count anyone saying "me too" or commenting on other people's lists. These are just the lists from the sticky thread. I wasn't a Nazi about whether it was 10 movies or not, since no one stuck to that rule. I included updates, but did not delete anything from any lists that an update was replacing, since a want is a want.

Many of these are tied, so I decided to just list the top 25. I'll list the "place" and the number of picks, but not the number (#25) since the actual order within the places is arbitrary.

In dramatic fashion (but not like, in a Greg McDuck kind of way):

Eleventh Place:

Tron (16)
Snakes on a Plane (16)

Tenth Place:

War of the Worlds (2005) (17)
Starship Troopers (17)
Star Wars: A New Hope (17)
Jaws: The Revenge (17)

Ninth Place:

Van Helsing (18)
The Village (18)
Red Dawn (18)
Planet of the Apes (2001) (18)
Krull (18)

Eighth Place:

Superman Returns (19)
Resident Evil (19)
Commando (19)

Seventh Place:

Street Fighter (21)
Dune (21)
Catwoman (21)

Sixth Place:

Total Recall (22)
Masters of the Universe (22)

Fifth Place:

The Hulk (25)
Armageddon (25)

Fourth Place:

Godzilla (1998) (28)

Third Place:

Super Mario Bros. (30)

Second Place:

Titanic (32)

First Place:

Waterworld (33)

And because you'll want to know, here's what didn't make it (10 or more picks):

15 Superman IV: The Quest For Peace
15 Labyrinth
15 House of the Dead
15 Flash Gordon

14 League of Extraordinary Gentlemen
14 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom
14 Die Hard
14 Bloodrayne

12 National Treasure
12 Lost in Space
12 Logan's Run
12 Ghost Rider
12 Doom
12 Beastmaster
12 Alone in the Dark

11 X3
11 Willow
11 Tomb Raider
11 Star Trek: The Motion Picture
11 Speed
11 Signs
11 Minority Report
11 Legend
11 Conan the Barbarian

10 V for Vendetta
10 The DaVinci Code
10 Star Trek: Nemesis
10 Showgirls
10 High School Musical
10 Fight Club
10 Donnie Darko
10 Demolition Man
10 Deep Blue Sea
10 Cobra
10 Alien vs Predator
10 2001: A Space Odyssey

What is That Movie?

R E D  D A W N  has a filter on it that changes it to "That Movie"

Dune used to have one that changed it to "That Movie RVR keeps Mentioning" but that one's been removed.

Oh, and nice work bratpop.  I've always been curious about this.

I guess since there's an iRiff of it already they decided to take it down.  Then again a Red Don iRiff has cropped up to so maybe that one is on it's way out too.

Of these, there have already been iRiffs of:  TRON, STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, and SUPER MARIO BROTHERS, as well as STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE.  And someone is working on an iRiff of MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE.  I've listened to the others, except for SUPER MARIO BROTHERS, and they were all very good riffs, so I recommend them to anyone who wants to see those movies riffed.

Given my list was fairly... I don't want to say obscure, but it was certainly unique to me, it doesn't surprise me at all that only a few of mine mad the backup list (of course, in retrospect I don't like my list and need to change it. Oh well, next time). Still, no Lady in the Water anywhere? Crazy.

And I will forever be confused by Fight Club and V for Vendetta. Every other movie on the list I could see riffed, but not those two. Just doesn't seem like it would work.

I don't know why anyone would want to see Titanic get riffed.  It's such a long, boring movie, it'd be like watching Monsters-A-Go-Go again, except two hours longer.

Whaddya mean?  It's got cool special effects, Kate Winslet's breasts, and to top it all off, Leonardo DiCaprio dies!  It's like The Departed, only 200% better!  And didn't you love those mini-riffs Mike did of The Departed? (I still can't hear the word "prosthetic" without smiling.)

Anyway, Bill Corbett has a long-standing desire to riff this movie, and darn it, that's good enough for us.

They came out around the time Troll 2 did.  He and the guy from Something Awful (I'm blanking on his name) basically redubbed little snippets of the movie, rather than riffing on them.  They were pretty damned funny.  You could probably find them in the "Fun Stuff" section of the main page.

Err, WHICH Dune? The original (David Lynch, right? Pretty so-so; just my opinoin. Worth a Riff), or the Sci-Fi Channel remake (infinitely superior to the original)?

Waterworld came out before The Postman, didn't it?  Probably after seeing the first one most people didn't bother seeing the second.

Can't know for certain if something is good for riffing if you haven't seen it.

Hey folks.

There's still time to send in a list for the Top Guilty Pleasure Movies nominations. So head on over to the Guilty Pleasure thread (http://forum.rifftrax.com/index.php/topic,17110.0.html) and air out your cinematic dirty laundry!

It's fun for the whole family...unless of course one of your guilty pleasures is Showgirls in which case you're probably gonna want to wait until the kids go to bed.

Awesome list, great job.

I think out of all of them - Street Fighter would be the best. In the same vein would be Mortal Kombat 2 imo, but Street Fighter would be funnier I think.

I forgot about the fighting movies haha, rumble in the bronx, bloodsport.

They really should riff an old Kung Fu movie, maybe the Wu Tang/Shaolin series, Master of the Flying Guillotine or Snake in An Eagles Shadow.

I'd love to see the Dark Crystal movie riffed (the skexzys or whatever hahaa) - Labyrinthe - I dont know if I could sit through that again (I couldnt the first time) even with bill mike and kevin. I'd really like to see another Joe Don Baker riff - walking tall being an obvious choice (people were talkin' about havin' a hard time finding a JDB movie on dvd - his most famous one is the most obvious imo, or hell the rock remake)

The "Its Alive" demon baby movies would be funny, same with Basket Case, god thats a bad horror movie.
Title: Re: This is it, the official Top 25 Most Wanted Riffs
Post by: rifftraxnator on May 21, 2013, 04:17:43 PM
I agree with AMKR, more Joe Don Baker material please! He and Adam West have done numerous low budget films which have enough expired rights and limited distribution to make it into the VOD section on the site here.

Overall, there are too many movies on here that I personally think stink even with the commentary. For now, we just need more SciFi-Action blockbusters riffed as well as any turkey or passable gem starring Nicolas Cage, John Travolta or Tom Cruise that hasn't been done yet.

Barbarella would be an interesting one as would be Ghosts of Mars, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles trilogy, Barb Wire, Prometheus and anything Chuck Norris has done.

How about more Ator movies?

NOTE: A riff for Starship Troopers would be pathetic since the film itself is a satire not a mindless alien invasion type movie.
