Title: How do you rate this Riff?
Post by: Jonathan_Short_Torso on November 14, 2008, 12:55:55 AM
I thought this was an excellent rifftrax for an excellent movie. But, hey my opinions are a dime a dozen, so feel free to vote your opinion.

A very solid outing that had some very strong "lol" moments.

Give it a 9 and a half.

9er.  Much tighter riffing here than in the first X-Men, I think Kevin keeps them on a faster pace somehow.

Magneto/Cerebro jokes are still not old.  Amazing.

hmm, I've never liked the magneto cerebro thing.

I wasn't impressed. Waaay too many completely random jokes with no real basis in what's going on. What weren't baseless were obvious. "What smells?" "Who beefed?" "You smell like _____" "You've been eating ______" are all old, and are overused in this one. There were some funny jokes (I like turtles), but it seemed to me like a bunch of filler jokes. I got bored. 3/10 for three out of ten jokes being funny. I'd like to be clear that I'm no Rifftrax hater, but this was one of the worst Rifftrax I've seen.  :(

My wife and I say it to each other until one gives up. Course, we are easy to humor.

It was okay. They should have spent a lot more time on it. Most of the jokes were just filler and they repeated the same jokes a lot (and I'm not even talking about Cerebro). They had as many band references as Family Guy has random "this is like the time I ____" tangents. There were funny jokes interspersed throughout the riff (more than Quirk gives credit for, IMO) but overall it wasn't quite good.

Was this a last minute riff Mike?

Liked it a lot. Many big laughs throughout. I never cared for the Cerebro/Magneto thing but here it was funny because Bill was getting flustered with Mike and Kev getting it wrong.  :D

The Nightcrawler riffs were generally killer. I gave it a strong 8.

This is a really good one. The first half was a bit stronger than the second, though.

Yeah, it was originally going to just be Kevin and Bill. Don't know if Mike ended up doing any writing for it or not?

But the guys did a great job of Spider-Man 2 without Mike.

I haven't seen this one yet, but I am looking forward to it.

On 2 hour plus trax I've started watching 'em over 2 nights. Doing that has improved the 2nd half of those (longer) films greatly.

So for me, the 2nd half was just as funny.

I've found this to be the case as well.  When you approach the second half fresh on a second night it has frequently seemed much funnier as opposed to watching it all in one sitting. I would also find this true with MST but more so with Rifftrax considering the length of some of the films. I make it a policy now to watch the 2 hour plus trax over two or three nights.

Perhaps you're right. I've often thought that the second halves were weaker than the first. I theorized that it was because the riff crew ran out of gas at the end but maybe it was just me...

Based on this comment, I just realized that you're the esteemed Mighty Jack.  Kudos on your review site, which has been a highly entertaining and useful resource for me personally for a number of years now.

And I'm glad you gave The Day After Tomorrow another shot with your new two-part viewing process.  I consider it a criminally underrated track, so I'm happy to see it getting some much-needed love.

D-OH! I'd have been a terrible superhero, can't maintain a secret identity to save my life.  ;) But seriously, thanks for the kind words about the site. Yeah "Day After Tomorrow"  really got me laughing the last time I saw it.

Meh. There were a few very funny lines here an there, but, much like the movie itself, it was more or less generic and unmemorable.

There did seem to be some blandness to it. But there was a collection of lines that made it all worth it.

For my personal nerdy scoring system, it got a 9.34 so on the poll i gave it a 9.

This CRUSHED the first X movie in my eyes as a riff, and I too was tired of the Magneto/Cerebro thing but Bill's frustration made it funny.  I personally am  huge fan of the first 2 X movies without the riffs and I greatly enjoyed this effort.

Now this made me wonder: At some point do we get to see them take on the craptastic Ratner-ruined X3 sorta dark phoenix/Jean in a pissy mood "movie"?

Just watched this one.  I had to give it a 10, since they referred to my "Where Do I Poop?" joke from the Batman And Robin Rifftrax.

Lots of laughs in this one.

Which, yes, rounds up to eight.  The man knows his mathematics.  I'll give him that.

Well....

3.1415926535897932384626433832795 + 2.71828183 + 1.73205081 = 7.5919252935897932384626433832795

Which is WAY different from 8!

For me, this was one of the most solid RiffTrax ever.  I can't remember a time I laughed so hard and consistently.  Perhaps it was the fact that we had to stop half-way through.  I used to have the belief that the guys would always run outta steam towards the end, but now I really believe I run outta steam.  I will adopt this new split-up technique.  It worked wonders.  Going back to the movie was kinda hard, but we were laughing our butts off right from the 2nd start (which nobody thought could happen).  Also, i looove the Magneto/Cerebro jokes.  I hated them by the end of the first one, but, on multiple viewings, I've come to really enjoy them.  I am totally there for whenever X3 is released.  I also didn't notice any "filler" jokes.  Probably because I was laughing at a previous joke so hard.  I dunno.  Absolutely loved this.  It's the first time I've ever decided instantly on a 10.

Btw Mighty Jack, great site.  I have a friend who quotes your site like it were RottenTomatoes and IMDb combined.

9. Great riff. And I'm sorry--Magneto-Cerebro never gets old with me.

and by the way...Magneto - not gay at all...

I've come to the same conclusion. I've found that I usually enjoy the last half of the trax more when I break them up over two or three nights. Especially the really long ones. And I quite enjoyed the X2 riff as well.

I too greatly enjoyed this one because, though I am a fan of the X films, I recognize that they are extremely cheesy and full of cliches that make them ripe for the riffing.
I too have found it useful to break these up, if not over a few nights, but to take short breaks in the middle. The signal is when I'm no longer laughing very hard, I'm starting to "get used to it." The great thing about MST was that it was broken up for you, and it was only, what, 70-75 minutes movie.
I can't help loving:
"I'm in"
"She's good"
"you have no idea"
"wow--a superhero cliche hat trick!!"

I know I am pretty behind on this one, but we just watched it last night.

Didn't love it. I gave it a 6.

It has quite a few really solid laugh-out-louds, and yet way to many misses.

I would have to say that the "I like turtles" line might be my all-time favourite riff. I also liked the one about General Ratner, and a few other really solid lines.

I agree with the earlier comments that there were too many fart jokes. I love how you can stick it to "According to Jim" and other such mediocre sitcoms and then do jokes of that caliber.

But what I found really pretty baffling were the gay jokes.

Well, I say jokes but more often that not it was just pointing out that Ian McKellen is gay. (The singing "gay, gay, gay ,gay" etc when you first see him for example.) That's not a joke.

It really came off as high school bullying more than anything else.

I'm not offended by gay jokes, my point was that they really weren't jokes, they were just saying that the dude on screen was gay.

Well I think they are, but then again I laugh heartily at everything and anything Bill Corbett says. I can see his point, though, that it's not technically a "joke" in the academic sense.
