Title: Riff Raff Theater: Armageddon
Post by: ChrisHanel on August 16, 2008, 02:03:08 PM
This will be an online only release while we perform the Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Englert.  Scripts due September 19th.

We're riffing the theatrical, non-Criterion edition. The duration of the movie should be 151 minutes. It's the version that pops up as #1 if you search for Armageddon on Amazon.

How can you riff the most realistic space movie (full of good characters who we all love) ever?

You MONSTERS.

I thought I'd get around to submitting some jokes, so watched Armageddon over the weekend for the first time.

What the hell?  Seriously, what the hell?

I'd never seen this before.

I watched about 20 minutes before I had to turn it off and scoop up my brain. I can't believe this was a commercial success. It's not a movie. It's a series of individual, disconnected photographs set to a klaxon horn at full blast for 2 and a half hours. It's hideous.

We have to divide the work out or something. I'm foreseeing 40 scripts all of which write jokes for only the first half hour.

Armageddon (noun)---
In Christian religion, the site of the final battle (or campaign) between God, and Satan. Satan will operate through the person known as the "Beast" or the Antichrist, written about in the Book of Revelation in the Christian New Testament.

(Also spelled Har-Magedon in some modern English translations.)

Example of usage:
"How would you like an Armageddon in the mouth?"

I hope this clears up any misunderstanding.

Also, where do we submit our entries for the film?

Buy a little hand held voice recorder and have a friend duct tape you to a chair and press record.  Then they can leave and you can get some writing done.

JFK and Schindler's list we watched in history class during lessons that were topic-ly appropriate. We watched The Wizard of Oz when we were doing a joint Economics / English class about ... whatever the hell it was The Wizard of Oz was supposed to be about. The populist movement and the gold standard, or some shit.

We watched Princess Bride and R&G because our AP History class was more smart than we were supposed to be, and finished our lesson plan a week early. :P

We also watched some stuff like Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, but I don't count that because although interesting, it wasn't a movie that we were supposed to be watching for fun.

Relax a little.  They said everyone who sent stuff in had riffs in the last draft, so unless they were mistaken you got something in.  You're gonna be waiting quite a while to hear the mp3 because they have to record Tron and LXG first.

Finally picked up my copy for writing purposes. Somehow, I managed to never actually see this flick before.

I've contributed a bit to a few RRT projects so far. Most of them were a lot of fun to write for, with only minor emotional or psychological pain. The exception was "Batman and Robin", which caused deep, indescribable anguish in places I didn't realize I had. The good news was that, since then, no film has given me the pain or the sorrow that "Batman and Robin" has.

But honestly, "Armageddon" has a good chance of coming pretty damn close.

I didn't "rig" anything. My friends wanted to see Armaggedon done instead of LXG! And My friends votes did nothing, It was obvious that the audience demanded this film at some point. Gah, you guys only remember the bad things!  :D

I am looking forward to writing this one, and, for the record, I hated writing LXG, I hated watching it, and I would always chose Batmand and Robin over LXG! I LOATHE that film!

I just finished my second viewing.  So far I've written about 3 pages of riffs.  This movie isn't quite as painful for me as, say, LXG, but it's pretty high on the pain scale.  One lingering effect:  I will probably never eat another animal cracker again, ever.

Maybe we should ask for a few volunteers on this one to specifically start on the last hour of the movie, and then go back to the beginning if they still have the strength of will to continue. I mean, there's no real worry of continuity in terms of riffing, unless you want to set up some running jokes (and those can still be added in later when you go back to the beginning).

So... any takers?

There's about a minute difference fairly early on (during the psycho analysis) so my riffs would be pretty off time wise. I could still do it, but it would mean who ever assembles the script would have to go off the description of what's happening, not the time stamps.

Sadly, I just NOW have been able to start working on the script for this. :'(  Job and movie-accessibility issues have complicated matters from the get-go.

Hopefully I can get something in that will help the cause (particularly in that last hour or so, based on what I'm hearing from everyone else... :-X).

For the time being, you'll need to make your own image file of the flags put together in one jpeg, and upload it somewhere.

Chris is working on a flag signature generator, but it's going to be awhile before it's available.

That's good. BTA and I watched the movie and recorded our conversaion (including 15 min of him talking on his cell phone) and we are having issues getting me a copy. I have already started on the written script, however

I just submitted mine. What part did people find the easiest to riff? It was the first hour for me.

For me the first hour and the last 30 minutes were the easiest parts to riff.

It's been a rough going for me so far - working on my current iRiff project ALONG with the Power Rangers Movie iRiff ALONG with this...in addition to full-time work and many other obligations...

Plus the nature of this movie - after the 1st hour, my brain just goes numb with all the NASA jargon and random people grimacing and yelling.  And there is hardly ANY pause between dialogue AT ALL in this movie - I end up having half of my riffs overlapping other people talking! :P

But hopefully I can still help out - after all, there still are so many scenes in this movie screaming to be riffed.  Which always seems to help the cause. 8)

Welp, I've tried, I did the first hour, but I'm just burnt out on this. Sending what I got now.

Just sent mine in too.  I haven't really got any more time to devote to it during this week, or else I would've given it another go.  I think I managed to get in a few decent lines during the extra-tedious scenes towards the end, though.

You know, after watching and studying ( :speechless:) this movie, I have but one thing to say about the experience:

At least LXG was short.

Oh yeah, and bring on the riff.  "Richly deserved" is an understatement. >:(

I sent mine in today.  Overall, I'm pretty happy with the way it came out.  This movie, though...ugh.  I don't think they left a single cliche unturned.

Reminder!

The deadline for script submissions is tonight. Any time before 10pm EST is fine.

We've got 12 scripts so far, which is a decent number for a normal length film, but I'm definitely hoping to see a few more last minute submissions where this is a longer than average movie (especially for the last hour, since so many people have said they couldn't do the whole thing).

Screw it, I'm calling it quits at thirty-something lines.

This movie just plain hurts. I wish at least Chris Ellis and Liv Tyler had more screen time together, so I could load on the "That Thing You Do" references.

I finally got around to watching this thing a couple of nights ago (literally: it took me two nights to finish it).  I realize this makes me unforgivably philistine, but I got a kick out of it.  Big, dumb, loud, and definitely way more Afflecky than I'm comfortable with, but overall I thought it was kinda fun.

Sounds like I'll miss the deadline for script submissions, though, so I guess I will have to confine myself to gap fill for this one.

Well, since this is an online only riff, we don't have any kind of "hard" deadline, really. And frankly, since our plate is still full with LXG, I Robot, and Die Hard to record, it's going to be a little while before we get caught up enough to record Armageddon. So feel free to put some lines together and send them to me directly (but don't forget about Minority Report!).

Final script tally, not including staff (me, Chris, Junkyard, David) came to 20 scripts this time, a very nice number indeed. I believe the only times we had more scripts were for TRON and Batman & Robin (obviously - we had nearly 40 scripts for that one!). I'm trying to make some time over the weekend to start the process of compiling it all down to a rough draft.

Wasn't Tron that high because Chris had one started already with a bunch of non forum members (or something like that)?

Not a huge amount. We had two separate groups of people contribute: Three from our first performance in 2004, and two from our time at Geekza.

Yeah, and those people were only counted as 2 scripts by me in the original tally of 22 scripts, because I never got their actual names until much much later (when you handed me the final copy to update the script handling code), originally I just got handed the 2 scripts along with the ones submitted from the forum members.

BTW, I just have to say this. anais, how the hell do you sleep with yourself, rigging this vote and forcing us to riff this steaming pile, and then only turning in FIFTY lines for it? You monster!

technically it was 50 lines for me AND BTA. Yes, yes I am a monster. My friends all failed me and here I am alone and ashamed.

on the other hand, like, 7 people are going to buy it that wouldn't have if not for me. So take your (what's 7 times 2? 14. ok) 14 dollars and buy yourself something nice.

I was wrong. I will take writing for LXG over Armageddon anyday of the week!

But you guys were going to do Armaggedon anyway. All i did was try to make it done before LXG might have actually written more lines if that had happened

Only 4 people turned in more than 100 lines. And only 4 additional people made it all the way through the movie with material.

This one is going to be rough. Thank god we have extra time to do the writing on our end. :)

Also, David, you are a MACHINE. 693 lines?? You ROCK!

If there are any completely barren spots you want some more material for let us know.  I'd be willing to take another shot at it.  School work only let me watch the movie once or twice and I wasn't really all that focused on it.  That and I might have been working on some of my own projects.

Chris and David usually have a special writing session specifically to iron out the gaps now. That's our normal process, since we usually only have 3 weeks between when the scripts are due and when the script has to be finalized for the show. But if there are any really huge blank sections after I finish my first round of script edits, I may post on here with the timeframe and ask for some extra material from anyone who can spare the time, since we don't have a strict deadline on this one. We would probably only be able to wait a couple of days for a deadline on that though, because I still need to hand the script over to Chris at SOME point, so he has time to work with it himself. :)
