Title: Inner thoughts and feelings
Post by: Darth Geek on July 31, 2008, 07:45:42 PM
While the guys did a great job riffing on this, I couldn't help but think that this short was actually pretty good about how considerate it was about all the causes of teenage issues, and what the teens were actually going through and how they felt. A short more in the conservative, vitriolic style like most of the other 50s shorts would have just treated the kids like thugs and out for "kicks". This didn't do that.
While it was a little silly, being a 50s short and all, it was definitely a better one with a much more reasoned approach. I kind of feel bad that they chose this short to riff on. It didn't seem to deserve it like all of the others.

Poor bunny :'(

Although did you see the way it was kept?  The animal cops should have busted that school, there couldn't have been room for water and food in that little cage...  And the "judge" at the end didn't mention animal cruelty at all, it's an outrage I tells ya.

I appreciated that they were trying to pin down the motivations for vandilizing, but the motivations they provided seemed more like the motivation for fist degree murder or terrorist acts. I doubt most of the people who spraypaint brick walls come from nearly so bleak an existance. :^)

I believe the theory back then was that vandalism was sort of a "gateway" crime that could lead up to bigger,  more serious situations in the same way that party drugs are thought to being harbingers for the hard stuff like heroine. I'm thinking they were trying to get kids to think critically in the earlier stages of rebellion in this manner so they wouldn't go on to killing anyone, hence the bleak set up for the kids who trash the lab. I could be wrong, though.

Overall, excellent riff, but I'm sad about the rabbit. I love bunnies.

Uh,  if something happens to the bunny I hope it turns into a zombie bunny first.  I'd feel better about it then.

Kill all the people you want but leave those sweet, innocent animals alone!

Didn't the death of the bunny pretty much prove that vandalism alone wasn't enough to create the drama the film was after?

Just remember, the bunny didn't actually die, just the bunny character.

Of course, the bunny did actually die, since that was the 50's.

Does that cheer everyone up?

Call me what you will but I am someone who has watched countless horror movies where I cheered for the deaths of the human characters while whenever a dog or cat is involved, I cheer for the animal. I think it has a lot to do with the perceived purity of animal emotions. I've had some pets that just seem to want something from me but even they do enough to convince me otherwise. I think my mom's cat actually knows when we talk about her even when her name doest come up.

Know this is late to interject, but, bah, I say. I was a vandal when younger. As were all of my idiot friends. The core reason? Sheer boredom. Why wasn't that ever considered part of the theory? I've ever been quite positive about the world, have had a good family, went to and still go to church and hope I have some moral grounding, but, it was soul-crushingly boring back in the day. Dunno what kids are up to now, with their Wiis and X-Boxes and so on, but I guess that keeps them more busy than an NES or Atari. Those things had games designed to more or less make you want to go outside due to sheer frustration (after hurling the godless console at the wall repeatedly because that little bastard in Ninja Gaiden won't do what you told him to and prefers to die). ...I digress.

I've never seen a short so out of touch that I find both hilariously stupid (the norm), but also infuriatingly ignorant of anything resembling reality. Vandalism apparently is the path to being the next Stalin, Pol Pot, Hitler, Che Guevara, or Mao. Psychotic and wanting to kill! ...But first, lets break some windows.

I left a flaming bag of crap on a police officer's doorstep once, and I don't have any of those problems.

it's amazing how a cute bunny can break down the most "hardened" hateful teen "feel how soft he is!" "see how he likes me?!"

Almost New Years and I'm bedridden with the Flu in Mexico..

I hope this isn't a sign of things to come in 2009 :speechless:
