Well then what sets this set apart from the others, other than it being the inaugural Shout! Factory box set? Maybe it has a cool prize inside like a Tom Servo I can put on the top of my car antenna. SWEEEEET!!!

Hard to choose which episodes I'd really really want to be on this set.  Mike episodes I'm looking forward to most are probably Werewolf, Quest of the Delta Knights and Jack Frost.  Joel eps I want to see released soon are Stranded in Space, Time of the Apes, maybe the Master Ninjas.

If I had to guess, I imagine these still sell pretty well for Rhino and each time a new MST3K set is released, they may get some blow back business.

OMG, I wished this one episode was in it. Okay this is gonna be horrible specifying information but just go with it.

Alright the one where there in space and the guy is running around in that like little golf cart thing. Then like the place goes on like 'red alert' and it shows the damn what are they called a famous like 80s band or whatever.

I hope this episodes in it because that is the one that made my dad crack up laughing. I mean like cereal all over the damn place.

Also good choices for this set.  I don't think I've seen First Spaceship to Venus or whatever it's called.  The other three are certified classics though.

406 Attack of the Giant Leeches (Undersea Kingdom-1)
409 The Indestructible Man (Undersea Kingdom-2)

From the MST3K Quote Guide

104 Women of the Prehistoric Planet

411 The Magic Sword
"Double-hi-keeba!  Raised you one." -Tom Servo (as George).

Yes, and Engineer Bradley was played by the insipid Wendell Corey, the man who was only slightly funnier than Sid Melton, but not as funny as Eddie Deezen.

Actually, that was a bit of a goof in the episode guide.  Red Bradley was played by Paul Gilbert, the adoptive father of Melissa Gilbert.

Wait, Laserblast was the final Comedy Central ep?  I should remember it better.  For some reason I remember the last couple host segments and closing real well, but not the movie.

honestly, i'm happy with the episode choices.  Werewolf and Future War are 2 of my top fav episodes, and it'll be nice to upgrade them to a pristine version.  Laserblast is nice simply for the host segments, though the movie kind of just plods along.  Frist Spaceship from Venus is a nice little curveball ShoutFactory threw us.  Nice to get some more season 2 episodes, and nice considering that that was one that was considered unlikely due to rights issues.  Though it is a bummer to read through the comments page over at Sattelite News over the episode list.  Variations of " Meet the new boss, same as the old boss".....

Several solid episodes. Laserblast is fun. Also has one of my fav muttered riffs. The fat bearded cop is giving the 'hero' a speeding ticket and one makes a snarky comment to the kid. one of the gang (think it is Mike) mutters "Yeah eat me you fuzzy marshmallow..."

"I think people who are stoked over the scifi episodes really havent seen or appreciate the Joel era…he made the show..why did they choose a crappy Joel episode to represent the 20th Anniversary set ??
I would have switched 211 for 201 (unless its part of a Lippert set)
Werewolf and Future War Id have waited for the next release - something that didnt say 20th Anniversary on it. It just seems inappropriate to me, as much as Im glad to see these to get the DVD treatment
It just doesnt seem right…all that hype and I get a SIGH from all of this.. "

When you have to pick 4 episodes from a sea of about 200 (with what, 57 that are or have been briefly released?) you're bound to both excite and disappoint people all over at the same time no matter which ones you go for.

Yeah.  The shirt would give me a rash or something anyway.  And god, what an ugly color. Why did they put *that* Crow on there? That's Bill's Crow, not Trace's crow! THE BASTARDS!!!

I think they're the thin DVD cases you can get for some movies.
Title: Re: 20th Anniv Set Packaging!!!
Post by: RoninFox on July 28, 2008, 07:47:02 AM
Yup.  The real thin cases you get in some box sets or can buy in packs if you want to transfer discs to save space (or fit more reauthors on a shelf)

They're about half the thickness of the standard cases.
Title: Re: 20th Anniv Set Packaging!!!
Post by: Bob on July 28, 2008, 08:34:31 AM
All of Josh Way's covers were built for the thinpaks.    There are just like regular DVD cases, but they are half the spine width so you can store more DVDs on your shelves.

The only downside is you cannot put as fancy graphics on the spine as you would for Alpha cases (e.g. 'normal' sized), but the space savings is worth it.

I'm happy with these choices. Werewolf is one of the fifteen episodes I'm missing and my VHS copy of Future War has seen better days. I always thought First Spaceship on Venus was underrated. It's always been one of my favorite season two episodes.

People have mentioned that they are excited about the extras but nobody on this thread has mentioned what they are. What extras  have they promised?

I thought I also read that there would be brief introductions to the episodes as well.    And I think original trailers.   I can only imagine how they tried to create a trailer for "Arizona Werewolf".

I have them all (except KTMA) on DVD from either Rhino or Cheepins.   And like JC wrote, buying the official releases means the chance we get to have more releases in the future.

Besides RVR II, if you don't, the thought of me playing daily with my Crow figurine while you stare at your empty spool of thread (just WISHING it were a Crow figurine) will haunt you for years.    We cannot have THAT, can we?

i don't think Jim Mallon's wallet is that big in the first place.  You've said youself before that you have "copies" of all the episodes, two to a disc.  More than likley, due to the compressed nature of the files, the quality of those episodes would probably be pretty low.  By getting the set, you'd have the episodes listed in the best quality,  But if you don't care, then there isn't an issue. Persoanlly, i'd like to have the episodes in the best quality, but that's just me.  I could care less who get the residuals.

All the anti-Mallon talk is dumb.  We don't know the story, we don't know who makes money, they're probably not going to tell us in too much detail, who gives a rip?  It's pretty unlikely that he's the evil overlord people make him out to be, just let it die.

Can you name any other property that is simultaneously distributed by two competing companies?  I guess it could happen but I wouldn't bet on it. According to the Shout! Factory press release they have the rights to every episode. Rhino would then have to re-license all the MST3K rights to continue releasing their DVDs.

I am sure that only refers to the MST3K portions of the shows. The host segments and shadowrama. They still have to get the rights to each movie being riffed seperately.

That is what I meant.  If Shout has all the MST3K (host segs, riffing etc) rights then Rhino would have to re-license them all from shout and I just don't see them doing that. What I see happening is that once they exhausted their current stock then Rhino MSt3K releases will be no more.

It irritates me when I see people go "I won't get these I already own these episodes" or "I already have these", I mean Price is a at least an honest reason to not buy them, but "I've got Bootlegs instead" isn't really a fair one, to me anyway. I downloaded them all, and I've bought them all the Rhino DVDs and will buy the Shout!Factory DVD's because I want more!

Maybe they'll take notice and realise there's a market over here and release them properly over here, if not then i'll sue them, buy the rights with the money i make, then release them myself  >:D

If that's true, why are they still selling them at the rhino.com website? Huh? Why is there no mention that they're going out of print? Surely such a press release would be advantageous, as it would encourage panicked fans to buy buy buy.

There might be some kind of temporary agreement giving Rhino some time before their rights expire on the episodes they have in print.  I wouldn't think it would last long though.

As for why they wouldn't announce that the sets would go out of print thus driving sales to hoarders and panicked consumers...they're Rhino and that would be a smart move.  I'm sure you see the problem.   ;)

I am seeing more on shelves lately that I have since Rhino started selling the 4-packs, which says to me they're emptying their stock quickly.  Usually at a Best Buy I see one or two copies of one set, the other day I saw three different sets with multiple copies.

If these were Disney movies or some other title that sell in the hundreds of thousands you would see something. This is MST3K which has a very small marketshare. If any one set or disc sold more than 70 - 100k units I would be very, very surprised. It is obviously not a priority for Rhino. As far as selling them on the site when something goes out of print they don't generally get rid of excess stock. They just don't manufacture anymore copies. So whatever they have is all they have and they can sell them until they run out which could take years depending on their stock.

I figured someone would have posted this by now:

I'm too lazy to post the pictures:

...Moreover, this lavishly packaged 4-DVD box set contains collectible lobby cards and a figurine of the world famous Crow T. Robot - all assembled in a collectible embossed tin and only available with the purchase of this DVD box set."

That's a quote from Shout! Factory's official press release for the October 28th DVD release of Mystery Science Theater 3000 - 20th Anniversary Edition.  Just a short time ago today (like, minutes ago!) the studio has updated the artwork at their Amazon pre-order listing to show off ALL of the contents of this tin package, including the lobby cards and the Crow figurine.  We've got a fast look at it for you, followed by the previously-seen large look at the tin at the bottom:

Sweet!  This answers some of the burning questions about the packaging.  Namely, that the episodes appear to be in individual thinpaks, and the covers feature the same very cool, stylized art that adorns the lobby cards.

Kudos to Shout! on both counts.
Title: Re: 20th Anniv Set Packaging!!!
Post by: Jazzman99 on August 18, 2008, 04:55:42 PM
Here's the remaining burning question about the thinpaks for me: will they have the episode #s on the spines?  If so, I *might* consider using these instead of the awesome covers Josh Way put out.  Heaven knows they're better than any packaging Rhino ever did.

My OCD, though, will probably insist that I go with Josh's covers just for the sake of consistency.

It's astonishing, the amount of thought I can put into something like this.

I went to my local used DVD store, and was about to purchase 'No Country for Old Men,' when I saw a familiar image behind the counter. I asked, and found in my hands- a used, opened MST3K 20th Anniversary set...for $35! I opened it up and checked everything, and the entire set was intact, right down to the images and the Crow statue!

Needless to say Anton Chigurgh went back on the shelf, and the boxset  is now mine, all mine!!

What I don't know, is how it came out so soon. All outlets say 10/28, and there aren't any for sale now sets that have shown up on eBay.

P.S. I'm sure some are thinking I'm full of it, but I will have photographic proof to show I'm not pulling anyone's leg. I'm a dedicated MST fan- my Village of the Giants fanpage is proof of that.

Btw, to answer a question above, the episodes do not have their episode numbers on the spine.

This pieced together image I decided to do, to show the tin detail. Plus, Gypsy is there on the back of the tin! I also included the image of the Crow statue (I don't dare remove him from the encasement).

Excuse the messy bed. But here's everything that was part of the set. The one pain is that the box that the cardboard box that holds the 4 clamshell cases, needs to be wedged out of the tin every single time if you place it back in there.

Probably a web reviewer....otherwise throw it on eBay and they'd have gotten a lot more (if you consider that this place was selling it for $35)

Damn this city that all the used shops have closed (like it was our fault that they overcharged for most used discs).

Yeah, figures it would happen when I'm barely getting by with my money and probably wouldn't be able to snag one until the end of next month. Super.

It kind of surprises me when people don't expect "Limited Edition" to mean "limited edition" .....  Also, having worked at Best Buy in the past (3 years of the media department and merchandising/inventory), I would bet people will find a few copies at each and every store, well into the next few months.

Their "stock limits" may be all sold out.... but that's usually because certain reserve amounts go to places like Amazon (they get HUGE stock amounts), Best Buy, Circuit City, and so on.  I know Best Buy only dishes out a rotation of maybe 2-3 in stock at each store from their stock limit (sitting pretty in their distrobution centers).  Someone buys one or two, the dist center sends another one on the next truck shipment to restock the store with the small, seemingly dwindling to the customer, stock.

So as Shout! may be sold out, that also means they sold out their stock limits to stores, who sit on their stock and dish them out in small doses over a span of months, even years.

In short, if you don't have it pre-ordered, and your local Best Buy HAD a few copies when you show up to buy it, I would bet money (hypothetically) that they will get more in, and still have a stock of it through the end of the year.

Seriously!

They made an awesome limited edition set, gave us months and months of notice, and they are making a regular edition so that folks don't have to miss out completely. To me that sounds like a GOOD thing.

Man, a MSTie is a hard person to please.

It will be at every store on release day. If you didn't pre-order it than just go on Tuesday and get your own copy. When Shout talks about pre-orders  they are talking about all the stores that ordered it for their regular stock. Not just individual customers who pre-ordered from the likes of Amazon etc....

I'm actually sort of happy about the non-limited edition.  The tin would just take up extra room on my shelf, and the mini-Crow would just end up coated in dried mac-n-cheese and jammed underneath the couch with an assortment of Polly Pockets and three-year old Froot Loops.

Bummer they couldn't get a few more out there for the fans that want 'em.  Still, it wouldn't be special if everybody could get one forever.

What an idiot I am.

It kind of surprises me when people don't expect "Limited Edition" to mean "limited edition" .....
It surprises me when these companies don't take into account that there are people out there who can and will buy these in bulk....and not allow that when they decide the number of "limited editions" they make (see my rant about the "Rhino Homemade" CD's in the "Have you ever pirated movies?" thread).

Title: Re: 20th Anniv Set Packaging!!!

Maybe we can still use it as a lunchbox, since it's impossible to put the DVD cardboard case in there and get it out again without serious damage?

I just noticed that nowhere is there any mention of scene selections. Please tell me the didn't pull a film crew on us and leave us with a grand total of two DVD tracks and no scene selection. x_x

Anyway, now that the magic has worn off I'm getting ready to draw up  a list of complaints and suggestions for future editions. =o

I am pleased to see that each DVD has some kind of special feature AND the original trailer. I also think the cover art is rather nice with the Olde Skoole Cinema feel, and all those classic ham-movie poster shock lines.

The episode numbers are something to push though. It costs them nothing, it's extremely easy to implement, and it would provide an improvement over Rhino.

Sooo, does anybody think it's time to start hoarding the Rhino DVDs yet? D= Any ideas that they might skyrocket to market values akin to the price of an original Volume 10 on Amazon.com?

Yeah, totally, they are minor things (neither of which bother me in the slightest). They are kind of strange things to leave off, well, maybe not the show numbers, they might not realise that was important to people at all, but a chapter select is kind of standard.

Again though, I don't really care.

To be fair to Rhino... The Killer Shrews debacle was Best Brains fault. They provided the master.

For me scene selection menus are useless so I don't care about that. I just wish the chapter stops went "host segment - movie segment - host segment.

Title: Re: 20th Anniv Set Packaging!!!
Post by: Fuzzy Necromancer on November 03, 2008, 10:12:46 PM
Well, I tend to stop and start MST3K episodes a lot. When I actually can watch them at my own pace, and being the highly distractable person I am, I sometimes return to find that the DVD player has decided I'm done watching and shut down. Because I don't bother to always keep the chapter number display on and make a note of it every time I pause, I find that scene selections are a great convenience to me.

I also personally believe that every DVD in existence should come with scene selection, subtitles (in english and one foreign language), and the theatrical trailer. Yes, even the one dollar DVDs that come in carboard sleeves and the complementary DVD from the DMV that educates you about safe driving practices by having grief-striken relatives relay various stories about lives cut short by road rage. That should come with english sub, french or spanish sub, scene selection, and a theatrical trailer.

News update: Chris Gore will be reviewing this set on Attack of the Show tomorrow (Tuesday), because they succeeded in making people think it was a special collection by making it tin, including a bust, and calling it "20th Anniversary." merp.

I'm not hating on it, I just think a "20th anniversary" collection should have the best episode from each season, or something like that. The extras are special. But the movies are as random as any other MST set. It's more a "selection" than a collection. A collection implies the things collected are related. I mean, if you try to describe it, it tells the tale. "It's a collection of... four random episodes." Exactly.

Another good idea would have been to collect all the big "story" episodes. Like Frank's first episode, Frank's last episode, Observer's first episode, Joel's cameo, etc. Or, for common sense, release the KTMA episodes, or the entire first season. Or just more than four episodes.

It's just funny to me they'd review this and not all the other collections, despite the actual "collection" part being nothing special. I mean it's not like the movies are special editions, in widescreen, with restored footage, better picture, more riffs, or anything. That would be something unique. Treat each disc like a release of the movie. Let's face it, that's the only release Laserblast is going to get.

I'm not hating on it, I just think a "20th anniversary" collection should have the best episode from each season, or something like that.

You realize that "best episode" is completely subjective and it doesn't matter WHAT episodes they released, someone (most likely you) would have complained.

It's a 20th anniversary set because it comes out in the year of their 20th anniversary.
Title: Re: 20th Anniv Set Packaging!!!
Post by: bratpop on November 04, 2008, 12:14:04 AM
Yeah, I know best is subjective. But one from EACH SEASON would at least have shown some effort to make the selection special. What are your thoughts on every other sentence I typed? Could you maybe start a blog about it? That would be cool.
Title: Re: 20th Anniv Set Packaging!!!

People are already complaining about the price of this set. Add 6 (or 7 is you want one from season K) in and it's through the roof.

PLUS that is more movies that they could lose the rights too, thus forcing the set out of print.

What you propose is unreasonable.

Some Thoughts from Someone Who Actually Bought the “Limited Edition” Set:

Pros:

1.     Unlike the Rhino releases, the name of the movie is largely and clearly printed on the DVD without a lot of clutter.  The “artsy” Rhino DVDs were fun for about a second, but a real PITA to read the title in most cases.

2.    Each episode has its own slimcase.  I had always disliked the Rhino packaging, which was all or nothing.

3.     Very logical and “normal” menus.  This hasn’t been a problem with recent Rhino releases but some of the early single discs had the most counterintuitive and/or needlessly complicated menus I have ever seen.

4.     The History of MST3K segments were very well done, and I felt they justified the slightly higher price.

5.   Only the first disc had advertisements.  Very nice!

6.   The comic book styled cover art was sort of cheesy, but a welcome change.  It appears that Shout Factory will not be using a standard template or format, which is OK by me.

Cons:

1.   Episode selection is still sort of a problem.  For example, there does not seem to be any theme of unifying link.  To be fair, Rhino sort of screwed this up forever with their previous releases.  For example, Mitchell has already been released, so most fans would consider a “last appearance” set (Mitchell, Samson v. the Vampire Women, Laserblast, and Diabolik) a form of gouging or double-dipping.

Also, I think episode selection is tied to a production budget.  That is, you may have noticed that the Rhino sets included at least one public domain movie each.  My hypothesis is that this was done to prevent the sets from having radically different MSRPs.  In other words, I am sure Rhino, and now Shout Factory, have their reasons, but it would be nice to hear them for once.

2.   This may be my fault for not checking, but I probably would have purchased the unlimited edition had I known about it.  I’m a little too cheap to be wasting extra money on a toy and brightly colored tin box.

3.   The cardboard slipcase fits the tin too tightly.  It is almost impossible to remove without damaging it.

Pretty much spot on with what I think as well.

I use Josh Way's covers, so the fact that these Shout Factory covers look great is not that big of a deal for me.    But I will keep the original thinpaks in the tin box on my shelf.

I assume the next releases will just be the thinpaks.

IMHO, the "chapter stop" thing isn't so much of an issue if they did the thing a la "Film Crew".

Yeah, it would be cooler to have actual scene related chapter stops in those DVDs.  But they did put the stops at the important spots - the beginning of the film, Lunch and then the second half.  That works for me.

As long as I don't have to watch the opening every time (sorry, guys - love the theme, the inventions and the skits but sometimes I just want the riffed movie) and I can get to a few important bits, I'm happy.

The episode selections have never bothered me. I don't need a theme. I just need officially released episodes with no double dips. I just hope Shout! continues to release multiple episode sets on separate discs.

I agree with you completely on #3. I just took out the cardboard box and slipped the single DVDs and the poster pictures in the DVD with the Crow figurine and just removed the cardboard box altogether. For #2 though, is/was the standard edition cheaper? I didn't even know it was out yet.

I didn't hear if it was cheaper, but I don't see how it could be.  Their weren't a lot of frills beyond the tin case in the collector's edition.

Yeah. Plus, almost all of the other sets released by Rhino are running around $50. With those you get the films and maybe an intro and trailer. Whereas with this..well we all know what you get with it. It's worth probably more than what they're selling it for.

Your point is ridiculous, and I will keep arguing nonsense where ever I see it.

Just because you didn't like them, doesn't mean they didn't cost money.

And it is pretty simple to see that a set that contains THINGS costs more to produce than a set that DOESN'T.

That is why they should drop the price, and I'd be very surprised if they didn't.

I was trying to be blissfully ignorant of the possibility that there might have ever been a Laserblast DVD. Thanks.

Chris Gore's "review" was shit. He said it came with four unaired episodes. Uh yeah, don't we wish. And he failed to mention the extras. And he said it was a rent because you could/did see/saw them on TV (I thought they were unaired, make up your mind). I'm still confused as to where you can rent a limited edition boxed set. Do they loan you the Crow bust?

Yep.  All of the real classics that have never even had one DVD pressing, and we get an MGM "Collector's Edition" of Laserblast?  Think of the literally thousands of films in the MGM catalog, and we get Laserblast?  Good grief...

Maybe he meant the three unaired documentary segments?  I haven't seen the review.

I haven't even seen video stores that will rent multi-volume sets without breaking them up, much less something like this.

I assume that the unlimited edition will be a few bucks cheaper, just because that's usually how these things are marketed.  Still, when I went to watch the two Fantastic Four Rifftrax, I discovered that Best Buy sold the set for several dollars more than buying the two movies individually.  That's not how that usually works...

There's a local video store near me that rents LE box sets. They have the Freaks & Geeks Yearbook on their shelf.

But you can rent the discs from Netflix. I'd imagine that is what the reviewer was suggesting.

It drops the price partly because the 20th Anniversary Limited Set takes up more space in a box to ship it.   When you can only fit (just for example - I don't know what it really works out to) 20 sets in a box of the tin and that same box can hold 50 of the un-limited edition, it's going to cost less to ship 100 of them.  And that saving can be passed along.

Plus you can say that the higher price on the first ones is like when the first release of electronics are always more expensive because they're making up the R&D money, Shout Factory! may have figured to make their production and rights costs back on the Limited Editions and then have the others priced a bit more reasonably.

The "slim case" versions of "Stargate SG-1", "The X-Files" and "ST:TNG" were the same in both cases.

Yes, the savings can be, but probably not on November 18th which is what we were discussing.  There is still demand for the discs so why drop the price right away.

It will be the packaging that holds the discs inside the tin. If you look at the back it has a different barcode than the the one that was on the tin.

Due to an unexpected level of demand, all copies of the deluxe version of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 20th Anniversary Edition 4-DVD box set have shipped to retail outlets in advance of the October 28, 2008 release date.

As a result, Shout! Factory is rush-releasing the standard version of the box set, which contains all four film episodes and DVD bonus features, but not the collectible tin box, the Crow T. Robot figurine, or lobby cards that are part of the deluxe version. The standard 4-DVD box set version of Mystery Science Theater 3000 20th Anniversary Edition will arrive in stores on November 18.

If any of the Shout! people are reading here's my own wishlist for future DVD sets.

1) Movie Trivia. The lobby cards are cute. Wouldn't it be cool to include on the back a short episode synopsis (a la Amazing Colossal Episode Guide) and maybe some movie trivia? It would be extremely easy and make the sets just a little more fun.

2) Riff Subtitles. A little more difficult, but including subtitles for the riffing would be a really cool feature (and possibly end a few arguements and/or rewinds).

3) Uncut Version. I know Rhino tried this and I have no idea about the whole movie rights situation. It's still interesting to see what Best Brains had to work with. You can even call it "Dr. F's Control Group".

4) MST3K Ball Christmas Ornament. Next set. Add to Shopping Cart. Quantity: 2.

I'm with you on the first two. Movies, especially bad movies, public domain movies, old movies, the stuff that usually ends up on MST3K, always have interesting and often inter-related histories (like Ed Wood stealing the octopus in "Bride of the Monster" but not the motor, or the same costume being used as the God That Gives Death With Its Touch in "Teenage Caveman" and the alien in Night of the Blood Beast)

Subtitles are very helpful, especially with the varying volumes.

I'm not opposed to the idea, but I have this insight on the process.  I am the same Doc Steve (David) who posts reviews at Forrester's MST3K discussion board.  I always try to include something like that in my review.  It proved to be tough to find things not already covered in "Daddy-O's Drive In Dirt."  However, this doesn't have to stop someone from covering the same material, per se.  (I just didn't want to do it, myself.)

2) Riff Subtitles. A little more difficult, but including subtitles for the riffing would be a really cool feature (and possibly end a few arguements and/or rewinds).

That would be groovy, and it shouldn't affect the bottom line enough to raise the price of the DVD.

3) Uncut Version. I know Rhino tried this and I have no idea about the whole movie rights situation. It's still interesting to see what Best Brains had to work with. You can even call it "Dr. F's Control Group".

The rights situation would just kill you on the movies that are not in the public domain.  It would be impossible in some cases and prohibitively expensive in other cases.  Personally, I wouldn't want to pay a dime extra for ANY MST3K movie.  To this day, I have never bothered to watch any of the "standard" versions on the discs I already own.

4) MST3K Ball Christmas Ornament. Next set. Add to Shopping Cart. Quantity: 2.

That would be a huge seller.  I'm good for at least two also.

An unopened collectors edition is still available in many suncoast stores for about 70 bucks!

Hopefully, that will change for those of you who were waiting for this version.  It would suck if you had to pay more for less.

Yeah, I noticed that.

I also noticed that a lot of places seem to still have the Collector's Edition anyway for all of their jumping up and down.

Maybe there were a lot of cancellations of pre-orders because of the economy?

The list price is ten dollars cheaper though. So that is really strange.

Chances are that some avid fans will want to buy this (or get this as a gift) for christmas, and they hope to make as much as possible off of any "avid fans" of anything they can find.  For those who aren't in such a hurry, put it in your shopping cart and check back every day or so.  Sooner or later Amazon will probably have a special discount on it for a day.  If they started out at the minimum that they were willing to sell it for, then they couldn't do any special discounts.

Also, in general it pays to shop around a few sites, instead of assuming Amazon will always have a good price for every item.  They do well on most items, but there's certainly a number of times that I've found CD's or DVD's much cheaper at other web-store sites.

Not if you live outside the country - then their shipping is the worst I ever come across.

Is Paul Chaplin older than the rest of the Best Brains crew? In the retrospective documentary (the one spanning the three disks, he looks horrifyingly old.

Maybe that is just what the process of working on those animated toons with Mallon did to him.

He's younger. But he's sort of a boney freak. And Mallon did suck his soul out and give it to Joe Estevez.

Edit: I just saw that it's in the next Shout Factory Set.  Brilliant minds think a like I guess.

3) Uncut Version. I know Rhino tried this and I have no idea about the whole movie rights situation. It's still interesting to see what Best Brains had to work with. You can even call it "Dr. F's Control Group".

All I want are the cut scenes. In fact, I prefer that instead of the whole thing.

4) MST3K Ball Christmas Ornament. Next set. Add to Shopping Cart. Quantity: 2.

Yes and yes!

How can you tell that's the normal version? There's no description or even title (other than "Mystery Science Theater 3000") on that page. Unbelievable, Amazon.

There are chapter stops at the original commercial breaks but there is no chapter/scene selection menu.

It's annoying that they only have chapter stops at the commercial breaks. I like to *gasp* skip the intro and lame skits, but I have to fast forward instead.

I'd have to say that that is my #1 complaint with this set. I hope they do better next time.

Yeah if there is not going to be an actual chapter menu selection screen then there is no reason why they can't add more chapter stops.

I put chapters for every scene on DVDs I author. If that's annoying, it's not as annoying as having to rewind to find the good scene in Attack of the Clones and not be able to just skip the bad ones.

So how many chapters do you average?

The George Lucas rule is actually correct - 60 scenes in a 2 hour movie. Though they are not all 2 minutes; where some are 5, others are less than 1, so it evens out.

But that's why even the Star Wars DVDs aren't perfect; they only have 50 chapters.

A moment of serendipity I have to share. I spend the morning watching 'Werewolf' and then go into work and who do I meet? The Director (who also played the old security guard).

Is it wrong to ask for an autograph?

Do the limited edition and the standard edition both come in tins? I'm trying to find the standard edition (I know, I'm probably the only MSTie that has that problem, but I don't need or want all the extra paraphernalia) and all I'm finding are sets in tins.

(It's probably not helping that I got about four hours of sleep last night . . . )

The standard edition doesn't come in the tin and doesn't come with the Crow figurine. I'm pretty sure this (http://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Science-Theater-3000-Anniversary/dp/B001IO07XM/ref=pd_bbs_sr_3?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1230524062&sr=8-3), although it doesn't say, is the standard DVD and this (http://www.amazon.com/Mystery-Science-Theater-3000-Anniversary/dp/B001B73PPS/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1230524218&sr=1-1), well that one says limited edition. See the difference in each one's picture too.

The (special box & toy-less) copy I ordered off Ebay came today and it's region 4!

This makes it the third MST-related thing to get a region 4 release, there's the NotLD/Carnival of Souls double-disk with Mike's commentary, the movie recently got released and now this! yay for us.
