The New York Times is reporting that the upcoming "Superman Returns" sequel and "Justice League of America" movie could be in jeopardy due to a recent court ruling. Here is a clip from the article:

"A federal judge here on Wednesday ruled that the heirs of Jerome Siegel — who 70 years ago sold the rights to the action hero he created with Joseph Shuster to Detective Comics for $130 — were entitled to claim a share of the United States copyright to the character. The ruling left intact Time Warner’s international rights to the character, which it has long owned through its DC Comics unit.

And it reserved for trial questions over how much the company may owe the Siegel heirs for use of the character since 1999, when their ownership is deemed to have been restored. Also to be resolved is whether the heirs are entitled to payments directly from Time Warner’s film unit, Warner Brothers, which took in $200 million at the domestic box office with "Superman Returns" in 2006, or only from the DC unit's Superman profits.

Still, the ruling threatened to complicate Warner's plans to make more films featuring Superman, including another sequel and a planned movie based on the DC Comics' "Justice League of America," in which he joins Batman, Wonder Woman and other superheroes to battle evildoers."

I'm sure it's not so complicated that their lawyers literally can't handle it, pull their hair out, and run screaming for the hills, leaving us without another Superman movie for the rest of eternity. Relaaaaaax. It could be worse. Superman could be in the public domain and we could have Bollywood-quality Superman movies every six months, and Superman cop shows, Superman lawyer shows, Superman doctor shows, Superman sitcoms, Superman reality shows, Superman cooking shows...

Collider got the chance to speak to Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) during a press junket for his upcoming movie "Lie to Me" and were able to squeeze a few bits of information about the "Superman Returns" sequel and "Justice League of America."

Regarding "Superman: The Man of Steel," Routh stated that the project is still alive and moving forward. "I trust that we'll be shooting 'The Man of Steel' sometime early next year," he revealed. "That's my goal, that's the outlook that I see."

Routh added that he believes a "Justice League of America" movie should be put on hold for a while, until he and Christian Bale had more time to establish the characters of Superman and Batman. "We've been doing a great job representing Superman and Batman," Routh said. "There is definitely a time and a place for the 'Justice League' movie. Now maybe isn't that time. I'd like to see it after we made the characters a bigger presence in the world."

Finally, Routh was asked whether he was ever approached to be in "Justice League." His answer was simply: "I was not."

At one point, it was Brett Ratner who was set to direct "Superman Returns" and Bryan Singer to direct "X-Men 3." In the end, the two filmmakers swapped jobs, which led to Warner Bros wanting to reboot the Superman franchise. But what would Brett Ratner's film have been like if he had proceeded as planned? (The script for Ratner's version was written by JJ Abrams.)

"The original movie I was going to be a part of, took place on Krypton for about half of the movie," Ratner told MTV News. "So it was much more otherworldly, and much darker, because there was a civil war on Krypton. You'd get more of the history."

Darker? That's the new buzz word after the success of "The Dark Knight." Warner Bros has recently revealed that they would love to take the next Superman installment in that direction. And now that Ratner has been refused to make the "Guitar Hero" movie, he could still have a shot at making his Superman version. "Maybe we can go back to it one day," he said.

And don't worry, nobody is planning to cast Brendan Fraser or Nicolas Cage in the new film. "I definitely agreed with Bryan Singer that you need an unknown actor," Ratner said. "I was going to surround Superman with known actors, but it's important to get an unknown. I love Tom Cruise, but to have someone like him who you see as Tom Cruise would be a mistake."

Um....this is what they're thinking of doing since TDK came out...there wouldn't have been enough time to film what is in this trailer befween now and then.

And where does it say that Brainiac isn't involved in the plot?   Brainiac could be at the heart of this civil war of theirs as his way of eliminating the competition.

Geez, I really hope they don't try and shoehorn too much of that whole "darker and edgier" crap into the next movie.  I mean...it's Superman we're talking about here.  I'm not much of a fan of the character, but I do know that the best Superman stories are huge, epic conflicts between good and evil that ultimately tend to feature idealism, and whether it can still exist in a cynical society.  In case the bigwig execs aren't able to wrap their minds around that, allow me to simplify - what works for Batman will not work for Superman.  They're completely different characters.

Again...not really a fan of the character, but I know he can still be interesting if the writing is good enough.  (Oddly enough, one of the best Superman stories I've ever seen was in a YouTube comedy series filmed using action figures).   I'd like to see a live-action Death of Superman movie sometime in my lifetime.  Yeah, I've mentioned that before, but seriously, what the hell's keeping them?  Apparently they're suffering from a severe allergy to money and success.

A Superman movie that is as dark as The Dark Knight?

Does anyone wonder why the nukes can't hit Hollywood fast enough for me?
